* * *Bakit parang isang dalagang

Is honesty a dying virtue?

Regarding Henry

HENRYLITO D. TACIO

“STUPID,” snorted Senator Pan-filo Lacson of some Catholic bish-ops’ opposition to the reproduc-tive health bill. “Uninformed ob-jections,” scoffed Rep. EdcelLagman.

Archbisop Jesus Dosado, ear-lier, cast into “exterior darkness”those who promote abortion. They’d be denied communion inOzamis. Repeating her call for“dialog”, President GloriaMacapagal Arroyo met with Car-dinal Ricardo Vidal and threeprelates.

Population deals with crea-tures “able to trace the stars …and feel a passion for eternity,”Edwin Markham wrote. That ex-plains today’s “gnashing of teeth”.

Did this dialog ever leavesquare one?

“For more than 30 years now,the ‘population debate’ dividedsegments of Philippine society,”

JULY 1, 2008 marks a victoriousmilestone for anti-smoking advo-cates in our country. On this day,the Tobacco Regulation Act of2003, or Republic Act No. 9211that bans cigarette ads on televi-sion, radio and print took effect.

This historical legislation radi-cally arrests the health risks thatsmoking brings to many especiallythe youth. The World Health Or-ganization estimates that thereare about 80,000 to 100,000young people, half of which arefrom Asia pick up the habit everyday. And this is mainly due to thestrong influence of cigarette ad-vertisements.

With this act, everythingseems to have gone up in smoke

“BE honest. Even if others arenot, even if others will not, evenif others cannot.” That seems tobe the credo of Brotherhood ofChristian Businessmen and Pro-fessionals. As its current presi-dent, Bobby Laviña, urges, “Wemust all live good and honestlives. Be the change we wish tohappen. Be honest at all times andin all circumstances.”

There are several ways of de-fining honesty. The dictionary it-self has several meanings for theword: refraining from lying, cheating, or stealing; a beingtruthful, trustworthy, or upright;showing fairness and sincerity; orfree from deceit. If you describesomeone having an honest living,it means that he gained or earnedby fair methods his income, notby cheating, lying, or stealing.

Is honesty among Filipinos al-ready a dying virtue these days? Ifyou answer affirmatively, I will begto disagree. Remember that air-port employee who was com-mended for returning a lost shoul-der bag containing cash and valu-ables left behind in a baggage con-veyor at the arrival area of theNinoy Aquino International Air-port?

In Taguig City, the mayor ex-tolled two city hall employees forturning over the P40,000 cashwhich a businessman accidentallydropped. In Manila, a 41-year-oldcity hall timekeeper suffering frompolio returned P60,000 worth ofcash and checks and vital docu-ments to a company messenger.

In San Pablo City, driver-ownerFaustino Cardoza earned praisesfrom people for returning the P10million cash left in his van by aGerman national. In ZamboangaCity, a policeman got a one-rankpromotion after he found and re-turned a bag containing almosthalf a million pesos to a retiredPhilippine Army soldier at the

WE have to be more aware of ourspiritual life, and even more sowith respect to our abiding re-sponsibilities toward it.

Our problem is that we tendto take it for granted, attendingto it only on certain special occa-sions. And this latter we do morefor show than for truly living anddeveloping it. We need to improveour grade in this area.

Though many are now ques-tioning it, the existence of ourspiritual life cannot be doubted. Our Lord himself told his sleepydisciples during his agony in thegarden: “The spirit indeed is will-ing, but the flesh is weak.” (Mt26,41)

And even without getting veryscholarly, we all know that there’ssomething spiritual in us becausewe can do spiritual operations. Wethink, we choose and love, we rea-son, discover things and an end-less etcetera of acts that can beabstracted from our material di-mension.

A philosophical principle, for-mulated more through commonsense than through labored think-ing, tells us that “Operare sequi-tur esse” (operation follows be-ing). A thing acts according towhat and how it is. Applied to thiscase, if we can do spiritual opera-tions, it’s because there’s some-thing spiritual in us.

To repeat, we have to be moreaware of our spiritual life. Weneed to go past the awareness ofonly our physical, psychological, intellectual, social conditions, etc.If we need to take care of theseaspects, we need much more to

Let us have a conversationabout charity, which is reallynothing more than the act ofsharing love with someone whoneeds it. The focus of charity isnot so much what you give, butwhat you share and that is thelove in your heart.

Is it only with needy peoplethat you can share your love? Ithink not, because you can alsoshare your love with your coun-try, and of course the people wholive in your country or are fromyour country.

Is it so difficult to share yourlove with other people or withyour country? I do not think so,especially if there is an orga-nized method or manner of do-ing it. Blinkered numbers-equals-hunger PR doesn’t help. Ex-presi-dent Joseph Estrada reduces thecontroversy to “libido”. The poorhave “no other past time,” hechortles. So, Catholics shouldagree to contraception. Indeed,Erap remains the best argument

take care of our spiritual life. This is because our spirit is

actually our principle of life, unityand direction. It’s not food, air, water, etc. that give us life andsustain us in it. These too are nec-essary, but only insofar as ourphysical organism and natural lifeare concerned. The body withoutthe soul cannot live, is helplessand clueless.

It is our spirit that brings usto look endlessly for the truth andfor happiness. Our body simplyenjoys them, but does not look forthem. It’s our spirit, through itsfaculties, the intelligence and will, that looks for them.

Pertinent to this point, theCompendium of Social Doctrineteaches: “Through his spiritual-ity man moves beyond the realmof mere things and plunges intothe innermost structure of reality.”(128)

Our spirit has the natural tro-pism for this. Thus, this tendencyhas to be reinforced always, see-ing to it that it does not get frus-trated by getting entangled withmerely material things and exter-nal impressions, nor even earthlytruths and goods.

Samples of the merely mate-rial things are when we allow our-selves to be dominated by oursenses, by our feelings and emo-tions. Sad to say, many do not any-more distinguish between whatis emotion and what is intelli-gence.

Samples of earthly truths andgoods are the worldly elementalforces involved in “feng shui”,geomancy, divination and horo-

scope. Or the sophisticated, eso-teric knowledge derived from thehuman sciences and arts. Ourspirit goes beyond these.

Ergo, while it can be assistedby our senses and faculties, ourspirit should not be allowed tobe dominated by them. It hasto soar toward its infinite pos-sibilities, toward the purelyspiritual world.

We should try not to interruptthis process or course. Rather weshould foster it. Thus, we need toadapt the appropriate attitudesand acquire the relevant skills. Weneed to learn the art of praying,of meditating and contemplating. These are the best acts of ourspirit.

Ultimately, it is our spirit, with the help of grace, that allowsus to be elevated to the supernatu-ral order, to a sharing in the life ofGod. This is our spirit’s properand ultimate object.

In this respect, the spirit hasto be freed from the clutches ofthe flesh. St. Paul has this to sayabout this point: “Walk in thespirit, and you shall not fulfill thelusts of the flesh. For the flesh lustsagainst the spirit, and the spiritagainst the flesh.” (Gal 5,16-17)

With our praying, meditatingand contemplating, we hope todeepen our faith, hope and char-ity, our wisdom, understandingand knowledge, that will enableus to achieve communion withGod while on earth, and with ev-erybody else.

This is the beauty of takingcare of our spiritual life.

for cigarette companies. Fromnow on, they will have to findmore creative and entrepreneur-ial methods to advertise theirproducts. Cigarette companieshave gone a long way after theSecond World War — throughcarefully studied and manipu-lated marketing — to make smok-ing acceptable and achieve intransforming it into a social iconof the successful and liberatedman and woman.

Many parents will sigh withrelief as they say goodbye to thescenic and breath-taking shots ofMarlboro Country, to the dynamicand sportive worlds of Winstonand Philip Morris. We are gradu-ally reverting back to days when

smoking will once again be re-garded as taboo. So parents andguardians can sit back and relaxnow that another harmful influ-ence is removed from thechildren’s path towards physicaland psychological development. The next generation of childrenwill be fortunate enough to be bornand raised in a “new world” thatwill be untainted by any trace oftobacco tar and not suffocated bycigarette smoke.

With this development wewould be more than happy to over-hear parents as they come out of amovie or after having watchedsome ads on T.V. that they’rethankful that “there was no ac-

world, some Filipinos still havethe decency of being honest. If youcan recall, the Senate honored cabdriver Nestor Sulpico for exem-plifying honesty and uplifting theimage of Filipinos abroad by re-turning US$70,000 worth of jew-elry to its owner after it was leftin his cab in New York City.

In the book of wisdom, accord-ing to American president Tho-mas Jefferson, “honesty is thefirst chapter.” But being honestis not just returning money andlost valuables. It’s more than that.It also means not cheating.

Dr. Madison Sarratt taughtmathematics at Vanderbilt Uni-versity for many years. Before giv-ing a test, he would admonish hisclass something like this: “Today,I am giving two examinations —one in trigonometry and the otherin honesty. I hope you will passthem both. If you must fail, failtrigonometry. There are manypeople in the world who can’tpass trigonometry, but there is noone who can’t pass the examina-tion of honesty.”

Honesty also means telling thetruth, and nothing but the truth. And that person who tells thetruth is ready to face the conse-quence. “To be willing to marchinto hell for a heavenly cause,” sogoes a line of a popular song. Or asLouisa May Alcott puts it: “Letmy name stand among those whoare willing to bear ridicule andreproach for the truth’s sake, andso earn some right to rejoice whenthe victory is won.”

Nobel winner Pearl S. Buckurges, “The truth is always excit-ing. Speak it, then. Life is dullwithout it.”

But more often than not, people would listen more to fic-tion than the truth. A famous

How and where do we findpeople to help? They are every-where, especially in a thirdworld country like the Philip-pines. But even if you live in afirst world country, they are ev-erywhere too, and you do nothave to look very far to findthem.

With God’s blessings, wehope to bring intercharity to allcountries everywhere in the fu-ture, but we are going to startin the Philippines first. WithGod’s blessings as well, perhapsHe can inspire the Filipinosabroad who are everywhere tobring intercharity everywhere,in a way making it our best ex-port product. For the most part, the Filipinos abroad are per-haps always in the receivingend. Hopefully, they would bein the giving end too.

HOW ARE WE GOING TODO IT?

Where two or three friendsare gathered together in thespirit of charity, they could al-ready form an IntercharityCircle. Where two or threeCircles are formed in a locality, they could already form anIntercharity Club.

Kaya sabini Father Pedring, “Noon iyon; ehngayon?”

* * *May punto si Father Pedring.

Pero may ibang pananaw sa pahayagni ex-Gob. Josie.

a network of friends, a network ofCircles and Clubs that are doingtheir own charitable and develop-mental projects in their own place,in their own time, running theirown programs depending on whatthey like to do best, or where theycould be most useful.

At the national level, theIntercharity Network is going tomaintain and sustain five main pro-grams that would hopefully be sup-ported and implemented by the lo-cal Circles and Clubs.

These are the programs inHealth, Education, Livelihood, Pro-tection and Shelter or HELPS forshort.

Each program will be moni-tored and managed by a nationalcommittee. I am now accepting

volunteers and nominations forthese committees.

Each committee will be spon-sored and guided by a partner or-ganization. I am also acceptingsuggestions as to which organiza-tions we are going to invite.

I think that many charitable anddevelopmental programs fail be-cause of the lack of focus, usually interms of physical locations or spe-cific site targets.

To remedy this problem, I ammaking sure that each programwould have a specific beneficiarytarget.

The Health program will targetpublic hospitals. The Educationprogram will target public schools. The Livelihood program will targetpublic markets. The Protection pro-

gram will target police stations. The Shelter program will target vil-lage halls. All of these beneficiarytargets would need help in manyways. For instance, they would needmaterials and supplies in order todeliver their assigned public ser-vices.

for condoms.There’s consensus, though, that

landless workers, scavengers or dailywage earners — with six, seven, eightkids — find it tougher to break out ofpenury.

Studies like Population Matters(Oxford University Press) to those byU.P.’s Aresneio Balisacan and DennisMapa or Ateneo’s Cielito Habito stressthis point. Out of 189 countries, thePhilippines ranked a sorry 86 in chil-dren who died before reaching age 5,Unicef reports.

The Progress of Peoples and otherPapal documents denounce povertythat degrades. Indigence mars thedaily lives of six out of ten Filipinos.“Listen to your lives,” FrederickBuechener writes. “If God speaks any-where, it is into our personal lives thatHe speaks.”

Abortion is a no-no. In fact, it’s acriminal offense. Pending reproduc-tive health care bills “do not legalizeabortion,” the Inquirer notes. Dosado“mischaracterized the entire range ofartificial family planning methods asall abortifacient.”

But Lagman & Co belatedly ex-cised an abortion-on-demand provi-sion they carelessly scribbled intotheir first draft. By then, alarm bellswere triggered.

Two out of every 10 marriedwomen — mostly in the D and E eco-nomic brackets — want no more chil-dren, the surveys show. But they cannot access family planning services.

All agree this spurs undergroundabortion. The toll, in this massacre, isabout 1,930 or more a day, the U.P.Population Institute estimates “Avoice was heard in Ramah, wailingand loud lamentation. Rachel weep-ing for her children … because theywere no more,” Matthew wrote ofHerod’s Massacre of the Innocents.

Parents should decide on the num-ber of children, reproductive rightssupporters demand today. That’s theposition defined earlier by Vatican II:Keeping in mind the good of both fam-ily and community, couples deter-mine the size of their families, saysCouncil document: The Church in theModern World.

“Procreation and parenthood do

not entail a right to have as many chil-dren as one desires,” wrote theologianFr. Aloysius Cartagenas. He called fora “fair hearing for 2-child proposal.”The right to be a parent should bebalanced with rights of the whole so-ciety. Contrary to popular Catholicbelief, the former need not take moralprecedence over the latter all thetime.”

The Church supports family plan-ning but bucks contraception. IpilPrelature and Cagayan De Oro arch-diocese vigorously implement theseprinciples in their “All Natural Fam-ily Planning” program. Can other dio-ceses say they match their “anath-emas” with action programs?

There’s far more common ground,in this debate, than the sound-bytesindicate. The areas of agreement de-mand we grope for consensus throughthe bridge that true dialog builds.

“The distance between man andman is infinite,” Nobel LaureateRabindranath Tagore once wrote. Andif God “as eternal bridge did not spanthe abyss, how could we reach oneanother”?

from page 3tor or actress smoking in the film” or that “ads aremore kid-friendly because cigarettes aren’t advertisedon T.V.,” etc.

But it would be alarmingly ironic if they didn’t re-act to the fact that the movie or ad contained a lot ofexplicit sexual scenes or morally questionable ideas.I’m sure none of the parents would calmly advise theirchildren in the following way: “Dear, it’s alright foryou to watch Sex and the City or Desperate Housewives.Just make sure you don’t look or close your ears whenany of the actors start to smoke.”

This might sound like an exaggeration, but in real-ity more and more movies and ads have less and lesssmoking scenes but on the contrary contain an increas-ing number of explicit sexual and violent scenes. Whatis worse than Hollywood and advertisers turning ourmoral compass upside down? It would be making usthink and live a moral life whose foundations are de-pendent on the marketing scheme of labeling.

What is now good or bad isn’t something morallyobjective, but something relative to the subject, thatis, something that can be changed depending on how itis viewed or portrayed. Advertisers would say thatsmoking is bad now, because we make it appear so andnot simply because doctors say so. Similarly, sexualinfidelity is okay and encouraged; since it is marketedit in such a way as to make the audience feel less re-strained in expressing their psychological and sexualfrustrations.

I believe we are not very far from seeing in our dayshow certain social ratings may change in the field ofentertainment, music and fashion. Can you imagine aday when R or R-18 ratings will be now based uponhow often the actors in a film are seen smoking, if theyin any way allude to the habit of smoking or if theymake use of ingredients and implements that may beharmful to the environment? What about music thatis rated as “obscene” if the word “smoke” is used or ifthe music video shows the singers wading through col-orful mist or smoke? Or that ramp models and beautypageants win or lose depending on their “use of” or“addiction to” cigarette smoking?

Is all this an exaggeration? It may very well be so.But the hypocritical embroidery of “a new sense ofmorality” portrayed in movies and ads is only the be-ginning of things to come. And this, and even worse, may happen if we do not “hold on fast to good” as St.Paul exhorts us; if we become blind and indifferent tothese subliminal attacks that are the root of the moralcancer growing within our families, in society and mar-ring our identity as God’s children.

Theyare flaunting their power and moneywith those vehicles they drive,” wikang alkalde.

Monica ElementarySchool.

IN THE MATTER OF THE CORRECTIONOF THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE OFROBIE S. MAPE

ROBIE S. MAPE, ANGEL C. MAPEAND AMBROCIA S. MAPE,

Petitioner,

– versus –

THE CIVIL REGISTRAR OF PULILAN,BULACAN AND ROGER B. SEVILLA,

Respondents.

X—————————————X

AMENDED ORDERBefore this Court is the Petition for Correction of Entries in the LocalCivil Registrar of Pulilan, Bulacan filed on July 15, 2008 by hereinpetitioner, through counsel, praying that after due notice, publicationand hearing, an Order be issued directing the Local Civil Registrar ofPulilan, Bulacan to effect the necessary correction of the entries inthe Certificate of Live Bir th of Robie S. Mape from the surnameRevilla to the correct surname Mape; from the father’s name of RogerB. Revilla to the correct name Angel C. Mape; and that from the entryreflecting that petitioner’s parents were married on September 21,1985 to the correct entry “Not Married”, pursuant to Rule 108 of theRules of Court.

The petition alleged that the petitioners Robie S. Mape, Angel C.Mape and Ambrocia S. Mape, are all of legal ages, Filipinos andresidents of Paltao, Pulilan, Bulacan. The respondents are the CivilRegistrar of Pulilan, Bulacan and Roger B. Revilla who is likewise oflegal age, Filipino, marital status and whereabouts are unknown andbeing impleaded herein considering that his name was erroneouslywritten as Robie S. Mape’s father was born on July 24, 1986 inPoblacion, Pulilan, Bulacan, (Annex “A” of the petition); that in thesaid Certificate of Live Birth, the name Roger B. Revilla was errone-ously written as the father the petitioner Robie, when in truth and infact, the latter’s father is petitioner Angel C. Mape, as evidenced bythe latter’s Affidavit of Acknowledgment dated May 20, 2008, (Annex“B” of the petition); that likewise, petitioner Robie’s parents, namelyAngle C. Mape and Ambrocia S. Santos were not yet married at thetime of petitioner’s birth; that petitioner’s parents were only marriedon April 29, 1990 as evidenced by their Certificate of Marriage,(Annex “C” of the petition); thus, the following entries in the petitionerRobie’s Certificate of Live Birth are erroneous and should thereforebe corrected accordingly to reflect the truth: a) the name of thepetitioner is erroneously entered as Robie Santos Revilla, instead ofhis true and correct name, Robie Santos Mape; b) the name of thefather to petitioner is erroneously entered as Roger B. Revilla, insteadof the true and correct name of his father as Angel C. Mape; c) theerroneous entry as to the marriage of petitioner’s parents, instead ofthe correct entry which is “Not Married”; that in all documents wherethe above entries are also stated, petitioner Robie has stated hiscorrect surname of Mape ad the correct full name of his father asAngel C. Mape, as evidenced by the following documents attached inthe petition: a. Certificate of Baptism, (Annex “D” of the petition); b.Certificate of Confirmation, (Annex “E” of the petition); c. Voter’sIdentification Card. (Annex “F” of the petition) d. Application forregistration, (Annex “G” of the petition); e. Students’ PermanentRecord, (Annex “H” of the petition); f. Community Tax Certificate(Annex “I” of the petition); g. Postal Identity Card, (Annex “J” of thepetition); and h. TIN I.D., (Annex “K” of the petition); that the errone-ous entries in the Certificate of Live Birth of petitioner Robie resultedby reason of the fact that at the time of his birth, petitioner’s grand-father, Jose Santos, did not want his daughter, petitioner Ambrocia,to give bir th to an illegitimate child, hence, Jose Santos made itappear that Ambrocia was married to Roger B. Revilla and the later isthe father of the petitioner Robie, when in the truth and in fact, thefather of the child was Angel C. Mape; that petitioner Ambrocia S.Mape was already pregnant of Robie when her then boyfriend, AngelC. Mape was assigned as a member of the Armed Forces of thePhilippines in Mindanao; thus, when Ambrocia C. Mape gave birth toRobie, her father, Jose Santos, made it appear that Ambrocia wasmarried to one Roger B. Revilla to avoid social embarrassment; thatsubsequently, petitioner Angel C. Mape returned and was able tomarry petitioner Ambrocia on April 29, 1990 as shown by their mar-riage contract, (Annex “C”)’ and that to avoid confusion and to put inorder the Certificate of Live Birth of Robie S. Mape, it is necessarythat the erroneous entries therein should be corrected in an adverseproceeding as required under the law.

Finding the said petition to be sufficient in form and substance, the Court sets the same for hearing on November 11, 2008 at 10:00o’clock in the morning at which date and time, interested parties mayappear and show cause why the same should not be granted.

Let this order be published once a week for three (3) consecutiveweeks in a newspaper of general circulation in the province of Bulacanat the expense of the petitioner.

Send copies of this Order to the Local Civil Registrar of Pulilan,Bulacan, to the National Statistics Office, and to the Office of theSolicitor General as well as to the Office of the Provincial Prosecutor, who is directed to appear on behalf of the government.

clergyman was preaching one Sunday and noticed that manyof his audience were drowsing. Suddenly, he paused, andthen in a very loud voice, related an incident that had noconnection whatsoever with his sermon.

The incident went like this: “I was once riding into asmall village and came to the house of a farmer. I stoppedfor a bit when I saw something stranger than I had everseen in my life. There was a sow with a litter of ten littlepigs. The sow and the piglets had a long curved horn grow-ing out their forehead between the ears.”

At this point, the clergyman stopped and ran his eyesover the congregation. Everybody was wide awake. So, heremarked, “How strange it all is! A few minutes ago, whenI was telling you the truth from the Bible, you all went tosleep. But now when you have heard a whopping lie, you areall wide awake!”

Now, going back to honesty. Who doesn’t want awardsand recognitions. I have received many and I think I de-served to get those honors. Mark Twain once reminded me:“It is better to deserve honors and not have them than tohave them and not deserve them.”

In the mid-1980’s researchers at Cleveland State Uni-versity made a startling discovery. They conducted an ex-periment by creating two fictitious job candidates Davidand John.

The candidates had identical resumes and letters of ref-erence. The only difference was that John’s letter includedthe sentence “Sometimes, John can be difficult to get alongwith.” They showed the resumes to a number of personneldirectors.

Which candidate did the personnel directors overwhelm-ingly prefer? No, it’s not David but John. The researchersconcluded the criticism of John made praise of John morebelievable. Admitting John’s wart actually helped sell John.Admitting flaws gives a person more credibility.

Now, I know a lot of people when they are on the brink ofdying, they will be honest to admit and tell the truth. Afterall, “with death,” said British Salman Rushdie, author ofThe Satanic Verses, “comes honesty.”

Should you wait for that day to come before you becomehonest? “Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watchyour words; they become actions. Watch your actions; theybecome habits. Watch your habits; they become character.Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.”
