The first public swimming pool in Indian River County was located near the Broadway Inn in Fellsmere. The size of the pool was 30 x 60 feet and ranged from 2 to 6 feet deep. On June 19, 1915 the pool was formally opened by Dr. E. T. Moore. There were 22 dressing rooms and a “good strong board and a platform for high diving.” Artesian wells fed water into the pool and kept the water flow constant. The bottom of the pool was fine white sand. The doctor charged individuals and families for using the pool. Almost immediately after the opening, there were complaints about the bathers’ loud voices, especially at night. This new entertainment to Fellsmere also added a new clothing line of bathing suits which was advertised in the Fellsmere Tribune. The editor of the newspaper invited people to join him at

5 a.m. when he made his daily plunges. This led to the “Five O’Clock Club” (which was called the “finest organization in town”). From the July 3, 1915 edition of the Fellsmere Tribune: “Slip into your bathing suit, put on a rain coat and hotfoot it for the pool. You will always find the members there in force. The water is crystal clear and delicious, and you go home feeling as if life were really worth living and with an appetite worth having. Try it once.” In less than two months, Fellsmere officials had to arrange a thorough cleaning of the pool.

It is not known how long the pool lasted. Today, there are two public pools run by Indian River County (one in north county and one in Gifford) and one run by the city of Vero Beach.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while deciding whether put the Oscar-winning films on your Netflix list:

• What’s up with all of the jockeying for positions in the 2016 Republican primary? We’re still 18 months out – the primary is set for Aug. 30, 2016 – but a few local races already have at least two high-profile candidates. One of the biggest political shockers in recent years came last week when Wesley Davis announced he would be challenging David Nolte for Property Appraiser. Davis, a three-term county commissioner, could have held the District 1 seat on the five-person board for as long as he wanted. He was unopposed in 2012 and likely would have been unopposed in ’16. Nolte will be seeking his 10th term as Property Appraiser. The Property Appraiser position pays $121,703 annually. If elected, Davis would more than double the pay he receives as county commissioner ($58,667).

When elected the first time in 1980, Nolte defeated incumbent Bill Law. For the past few elections, Nolte has received only token opposition. Davis, however, has the all-important “name recognition” going for him. This definitely will be Nolte’s toughest re-election campaign. Even tougher than when Art Neuberger ran against him in 1984. (Neuberger served on the Vero Beach City Council and, later, was elected to the County Commission.) Davis not running for re-election is sure to have a “ripple effect” for other positions. For example, Jim Hill, currently a member of the Sebastian City Council, and Susan Adams, currently a member of the Fellsmere City Council, immediately expressed interest in the District 1 seat. I never expected Property Appraiser to be the most exciting local race in 2016, but can you see anything topping

it? It has bumped the race for state representative, which is going to be very interesting to watch unfold, to the No. 2 spot.• Indian River County is committing $2.7 million in the fight to stop All Aboard Florida? Um, OK. I wonder what an actuary would say about the amount of risk vs. possible reward on this one.• Rain or shine, John Richardson rides his motorcycle to work at Bill’s TV. He even rode it last week, when the morning temperature dipped into the low 30s. Richardson is no rookie on a motorcycle. He is 66 years old and, except for a one-year gap, has owned a motorcycle since 1963. He estimates he has owned “22 or 23” during his lifetime. By the way, the near-freezing temperature he rode in Friday morning wasn’t a personal record. One time in North Carolina, he rode when it was 26 degrees.• In dropping off copies of last week’s issue at Sunshine Furniture, I heard a customer pay the store the ultimate compliment.

“Your store is the greatest, and I’ve been to ’em all,” the customer told the person behind the counter. “Just wanted you to know that.” With so many complainers in the world, it was refreshing to hear a customer give a local business such an enthusiastic thumbs-up.• Next week, I’ll announce the new inductees for the unofficial “Servers Hall of Fame.” They’ll join Elaine Huth and Sandy D’Amico – who started at Vincent’s in 1979 and 1981, respectively – as members. (You’ll recall I wrote about Elaine and Sandy two weeks ago.) Thanks to Chuck Balnius, Kevin Ciarlelli and Edith Campbell for their nominations. If you know of a longtime server (been there at least 25 years) at a local restaurant, please let me know.• Back in 2008, I was concerned about how Vero Beach would fare without the Dodgers being here for spring training. As it turned out, there was no need for the hand-wringing.

The Treasure Finder

The Highwaymen, also referred to as the Florida Highwaymen, are a special group of 25 men and one woman African-American landscape artists. They lived primarily in Fort Pierce and Indian River County. Highwaymen paintings portrayed vivid and bright colors to highlight the serene and underdeveloped Florida landscape. They painted different wind-bent palm trees, sunrises and sunsets, ocean waves and bright red Poinciana trees. These unknown artists began in the mid-1950s. Self-taught, these artists mentored and encouraged each other. They painted on cheap, mostly used, materials like upson board instead of expensive canvas. Old crown molding was used for frames. They painted in their garages, back yards and at various local farms. Blacks were not permitted to offer their paintings in galleries or stores. So, they began selling their paintings, sometimes still wet with paint, from the trunks of their

cars. They went door-to-door to local businesses. That is how the Highwaymen derived their title of the “Highwaymen,” so named in the 1990s by Jim Fitch, a Florida art collector and museum curator. These 26 self-proclaimed and determined artists were inducted into the State of Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004 as the “Highwaymen.” Seventeen of the original 26 Highwaymen still

paint. Highwaymen paintings have become widely sought by collectors universally. You can see and meet some of these artists at the Feb. 28 Highwaymen Art Show at the Fort Pierce Jetson store, 4145 S. U.S.1 (just north of Midway Road). Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can speak to the attending Highwaymen, get their autographs and buy their paintings. Admission is free.

Ralph Oko is host of “The Treasure Finder Roadshow” on WAXE 1370 AM and 107.9 FM. The one-hour show airs Tuesdays at 4 p.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

443. “Superstar”(1971) The CarpentersMemory: It wasn’t “cool” for a guy in eighth grade to like The Carpenters, but I did.

442. “Rolling in the Deep”(2011) AdeleMemory: I had no idea what the song title meant, but couldn’t resist singing along.

441. “Call Me”(1980) BlondieMemory: Sadly, Richard Gere in “American Gigolo” is the first thing that comes to mind.

In Indian River County, the median age is 49.9 years. (That is, half the people are older than this age and half are younger.)

In Florida, the median age is 41.1 years. In the United States, the median age is 37.6 years.
