PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Banyan trees in Vero Beach, thanks to Waldo Sexton
The banyan tree is most commonly found in India, where it is the national tree and considered sacred. In Hinduism, the leaf is considered the resting place for the god Krishna. Why are there so many of them in Florida and specifically Vero Beach? Who brought the first tree to Florida? At the Thomas Edison estate in Fort Myers, a banyan tree was planted in 1925 by Edison and Harvey Firestone. It is considered to be the first tree. The two men were looking for a way to develop more rubber. Firestone brought the Banyan tree from India and planted it in Edison’s yard. However, research has found that Banyan trees existed in Florida prior to 1900 at Fort Taylor, Key West and Miami. In fact, an obituary was printed December 1925 in the Miami Herald when the Key West tree died. It was 63 feet in circumference. It was believed to have been planted by a pirate in 1829.
The following assumption is based on the patterns of our local icon, Waldo Sexton. Waldo may have heard about the tree and possibly met with Firestone or Edison. Generally he did not like to be outdone when it came to the strange and curious. By 1931, according to the local newspaper, he made sure that Vero Beach had 25 new Banyan
trees. He planted six trees in Pocahontas Park, three in McAnsh Park (Humiston home), and 16 on the parkway at 21st Street and 20th Avenue. Sexton added more trees on his properties. Through the years many trees have been removed due to disease or because of the undertaking to remove non-native plants and trees. Today the most majestic ones can be found at McKee Botanical Garden.

Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while watching “American Idol” limp to the finish line:
• It’s not going to be for students attending Indian River State College. I figured that would be the main attraction of the apartment complex being built just west of Olive Garden on State Road 60. Beth Martincic, property manager of The Reserve of Vero Beach, says a lot of people have asked if the apartments are student housing, a 55-plus community, or subsidized housing. The eight-building apartment complex will be none of the above. “It’s a luxury community,” she said. The monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment will be $1,020. Apartments with two and three bedrooms will rent for $1,220 and $1,375, respectively. Martincic says all 24 apartments in the first building
have been leased. As of now, the new tenants are expected to move in between June 15 and July 1. With a new Chick-fil-A getting ready to open and an Outback Steakhouse expected to be built on the same parcel, having the residents of a 159-unit apartment complex within walking distance should make that a very vibrant area.• What intersection is most in need of a traffic signal? I’d vote for Aviation Boulevard at Airport Drive.• I had to laugh when I received an email, informing me that County Commissioner Wesley Davis was now following me on Twitter. The first thing that crossed my mind: He’s doing it because he’s running for Property Appraiser against David Nolte, who is seeking his 10th term.

Davis says that’s not the case. He said he made a commitment to himself that if he was going to be in business, he was going to keep up with current technology. He said he became a believer in the power of social media when he used his Facebook page to communicate with residents regarding the county’s new recycling program. “It was very eye-opening,” he said. “Very powerful.” His homespun humor would make for some great 140-character tweets, but he intends to use Twitter only to pass on information to the community. OK, so why only one tweet as of last week? “I don’t want to wear it out,” he said.• A sign denoting the 2016 state championship won by Vero Beach High School’s girls basketball team is now in place for all the traffic on U.S. 1 to see. It’s next to the sign for the VBHS girls lacrosse team’s state championships.• Just want to give a shout-out to Minuteman Press, which has moved into its new location at 983 12th Street.
It’s an impressive facility with lots of room for growth. (Minuteman prints Lemmon Lines every week. I couldn’t be happier with their service.)• So, will Wesley Davis support Donald Trump if he is the Republican nominee for president? “If he is the nominee, absolutely,” he said. He really stressed the “if he is the nominee” part. By the way, his son, Wesley Davis Jr., is a regional director for the Republican Party of Florida. He’s living in Polk County. “(Politics) is in his blood,” the proud father said.• In this space last week, I mentioned Paul Hargraves took exception to me calling “867-5309” (a song by Tommy Tutone) the most famous phone number in America. According to Paul, people his age would say it’s “Beechwood 4-5789” (by the Marvelettes). Well, Charles Hansen Jr. and Barbara Letts took exception to Paul’s ranking. They gave the nod to “Pennsylvania 6-5000” (by Glenn Miller). Seems like every generation has a famous phone number!

Meet me at Table 51
Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what is a regular feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.
You can tell Gene Broome is his father’s son. He’s “old school” in many respects. Some fascinating trivia about his father: He was one of 21 children (same mother and same father!), and he fought in both World War I and World War II. However, Gene didn’t have any interest in following in his father’s footsteps as a South Carolina farmer. Instead, he embraced the “variety is the spice of life” mentality. To wit: • He owned diving resorts in northern Florida and Mexico. • In South Carolina, he owned a construction company, a consumer-loan business and several mortgage offices. • He served three terms as mayor of Branford, a town in Suwannee County.
Gene, 64, moved from South Carolina to Sebastian in 2006 to be near his daughter, Holly. “When someone has your first grandchild, your world changes,” he said. After working 5-plus years at a bank, mostly as a mortgage-lending officer, he decided to start his own business – Credit Confidant LLC. It now serves several lending institutions and real-estate firms, helping people
get the necessary credit scores to qualify for mortgages. Credit Confidant has two divisions – public speaking and credit restoration. It’s been more than 21 years since Gene’s life-altering event at his diving resort in northern Florida. A dive tank exploded, and the 1,600 pounds of pressure inflicted great bodily harm – he suffered seven broken ribs, a broken nose, a punctured eardrum, and a partially severed right arm. The blast also took out a chunk of his skull. “The day my world changed forever,” he said. “It taught me that every day is precious.”
