What combination of things is most often credited with encouraging residential growth in Indian River County after World War II? A manufacturing boom bringing jobs to the area is a valid guess... but historical records note that air conditioning and mosquito control combined for luring more people to living in the county. Early efforts against pesky mosquitoes included fans made of palm fronds, smudge pots left smoldering near the front door, and window and door screens. But heightened concern in the 1920s about yellow fever and malaria – diseases carried by mosquitoes – got the Florida State Board of Health to look into ways to control the pest. Eliminating standing water where the pests breed was, and still is, a recommendation. In 1925, the state Legislature created the county’s Mosquito Control District.

Thehealthboardstudiedbenefitsofdrainingwetlandsandfillinginmarshlandsto eliminate breeding places. But that was too expensive to do on a large scale. Some ditch draining helped on a small scale.

DDT, a nerve poison, used during the war, proved an effective antidote to mosquitoes. ThecommandingofficeroftheNavalAirStationinVeroBeach ordered its use in the county toward the close of the war. A biplane sprayed the chemical over the landscape. After the war, the Indian River Mosquito Control District sprayed the insecticide along canals, wetlands and streets; residents found immense relief from the biting pests. The practice continued until the federal government banned the use of DDT in the 1970s. The agency turned its efforts to controlling larvae growth, spraying Paris Green chemical andcoatingthebreedinggroundswithoilfilms.– Source: A History of Indian River County by Sidney Johnston and William Adams

Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting on your “trick or treat” verdict:

• While I have a pretty good track record with election predictions,myconfidencelevelisn’tveryhighregardingthisyear’sraceforVeroBeachCityCouncil.Withthecity’shighelectricratestheNo.1issueforthe sixth year in a row, I’m thinking voters are suffering from “FPL fatigue.” Back in 2009, Charlie Wilson “owned” the issue and received the most votes. (A judge later removed him fromofficebecausehewasinviolationoftheresidencyrequirement.) Let history show that it was Wilson who opened the door for Florida Power & Light to begin negotiations for a possible purchase of the city’s electric utility. Wilson is running again this year, and his campaign is all about moving forward with the sale to FPL.

But are voters still tuned in? I get the sense that they’re not. Among the candidates, there’s a clear 3-3 split. Wilson, incumbent Pilar Turner and Harry Howle are on the “pro sale” side of the fence, and Randy Old, incumbent Jay Kramer and Jack Shupe aren’t. The seventh candidate, Brian Heady, isnotaffiliatedwitheithergroup.Predictedorderoffinish(Top 3 elected): 1. Old; 2. Kramer; 3. Turner; 4. Wilson; 5. Shupe; 6. Howle; 7. Heady.• NeverthoughtI’dseethedaywhereI’dmakeaprediction on a Mosquito Control District race … but Tom Lowther over Bob Russell by a whisker. (A sub-prediction:RussellwillwinwithinVeroBeach,with

Lowther’s countywide name recognition being the difference.)• For shock value, news of the Lobster Shanty closing ranks with The Patio’s sudden shuttering in 2008.Thequestionnowis,whichrestaurantstandstobenefitthe most from the Lobster Shanty’s departure from the local restaurant scene?• Back in July, when I was still working for the Press Journal, I wrote a column about Mike Warren and his service dog, Goose. (He received Goose from an organization called K9s for Warriors.) There’s a cool follow-up to the story – check the blog entry on LemmonLines.comtitled“Unfinishedbusiness.”It’sanitemaboutaterrificgesturemadebyaPalmCitywoman.• I learned something new this week, thanks in part to an observation by Ron Rennick Jr. He was looking at the VisionPlusadonthispageandnoticedthelastfourdigitsof a phone number are “2020” – which, of course, is a

great marketing number for an optometrist. I asked Lynn Smith, whose husband, Kris, is the residentoptometrist, whyVisionPlusliststwophonenumbers in the ad. In other words, with a number that’s “gold,” why use the other number? Lynn said the Florida Department of Health and the Board of Optometry require Kris to have a separate number for hispractice.(The“2020”numberisforVisionPlus.) Can you say “overregulation”?• While the Lemmons are loving all of the rain we’ve had in 2014 (because there are no brown spots in our yard), I sympathize with Mark Heyer, who called this summer the worst, weather-wise, he’s had in the eight years of owning Classic Car Wash. He said there was a three-week stretch where the car wash had to close early because of the rain.• Best decision of the week? Ordering the Lemon Slushee at the Treasure Coast Coffee Company on U.S. 1 in Sebastian. What a refreshing treat!

When I think of fall, it reminds me of this time of the year up north – the changing colors of leaves with orange and rustic tones, the crispness in the air, the masses of children “trick or treating” and the pumpkins made into jack o’lanterns peering out from doorsteps. The jack o’lanterns remind me of some favorite pumpkin treats: pumpkin pie, pumpkin roll, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin spice latte and even pumpkin beer in some microbreweries (yeah, IRC, we are moving up in the world, aren’t we?) – but have you ever tried PASTA WITH PUMPKIN SAUCE? Don’t turn up your nose at this concoction – you scare me with that jack o’lantern frown! I know what you are thinking–asweetpumpkinpiefillingatoppasta? Now,would I do that to you? My quick and easy recipe combines the mild taste of pumpkin puree as a delicious and neutral base with heavy

cream for an oh-so-creamy, oh-so-dreamy pasta sauceloadedwithnutrientsandfulloffiber.Thesaucetakesontheflavoroftheotheringredientslike parmesan and sage and is so dreamy that your family and friends will have to say “Boo!” toawakenyouaftersavoringtheflavor. The pumpkin sage cream sauce reminds me of another favorite recipe which takes twice the time – pumpkin ravioli with a sage browned buttersauce.Theflavorsaresimilar, butmy

pasta with pumpkin sauce takes half the time. Add some roasted asparagus or a fall salad on the side and you’ve got yourselfsomebigautumnflavors.Your“Jacko’lantern”will be smiling from ear to ear. Enjoy!

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

494. “Carrying Your Love with Me” (1997) George Strait. Memory: I’m not a big fan of country music, but I could listen to this song over and over.

493. “Abraham, Martin and John” (1968) Dion. Memory: “Anybody here seen my old friend John? Can you tell me where he’s gone?”

492. “Say You Love Me” (1975) Fleetwood Mac. Memory: When I was a high school senior, a girl read the lyrics to this song during English class. Remember it like it was yesterday.
