PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Vero Beach began to take shape in 1916
Did you know Riomar was called Vero Beach in 1916? The town of Vero was on the mainland. The George H. Burrows Development Company filed papers in 1916 for the new town/ corporation of “Vero Beach” in Cleveland and Delaware. Most of the residents were from Cleveland; therefore, it was also called the “Cleveland Colony.” Burrows arrived in 1914 and purchased 100-plus acres in the area now called Riomar. Prior to his arrival, William L. Kemper, also from Cleveland, owned a large majority of the property. What does the first rubber-core golf ball have to do with Vero Beach? In 1900 Cleveland, there was a professional golfer by the name of Joe Mitchell. Coburn Haskell and Mitchell were chatting at the local clubhouse and playing with a tangled ball of rubber bands. The idea changed the course of the golf ball. Burrows hired Mitchell to develop the Vero Beach golf course and become the golf
instructor. Everyone knew him. The board of directors for the Vero Beach Corporation in 1916 also named the streets. “The road along the river shore will be known as Indian River Drive and the road along the ocean will be called Ocean Drive. The road now being made from the river to the ocean will be called Palm Avenue.” Building restrictions were set such as no building
on the beach could cost less than $1,500. The new “Vero Beach” resort opened in December 1916. A 1917 Cleveland ad states: “From winter to summer in two days and a night; Zero to Vero, Florida; Vero Beach a Cleveland colony. History continues to change and make connections. Are you one of those who believes Columbus discovered America or Ponce DeLeon landed at St. Augustine?Pam Cooper is supervisor of the Archive Center & Genealogy Department at the Indian River County main library.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Donald Trump’s inevitable tumble in the polls:
• It’s the opening week for “A Chorus Line,” and the musical – which, believe it or not, is now 40 years old – has a good chance of cracking the all-time Top 5 for ticket sales at Riverside Theatre. Currently topping the list is “42nd Street” (February 2010), followed by “West Side Story (February 2015), “South Pacific” (February 2014), “Les Miserables” (February 2013), and “The Producers” (February 2011). Oscar Sales, Riverside Theatre’s marketing director, says “A Chorus Line” deserves at least partial credit for helping him decide on a career. He saw the play in the mid-1980s, which was his first visit to New York City since he left as a child. (He moved to Miami with his family.) “In my week there, I was able to see my first Broadway productions – ‘The Phantom of the Opera,’ ‘42nd Street’ and ‘A Chorus Line.’ I remember the thrill of these shows and the
excitement it garnered in me. I knew I had to be involved in some way – if not on stage, then perhaps in theatre management or promotion.” We’re fortunate to have a facility like Riverside Theatre. Just like we’ve had professional baseball players from here say they were inspired by Dodgertown, here’s hoping today’s youths will be inspired by the plays they see at Riverside Theatre.• What’s the strangest mix of businesses in a small plaza? I’d vote for what can be found at 9090 U.S. 1, between Rock City Gardens and the Hale Groves store – Paul’s Guns, Dr. Tim Sigman, and Speedin Seasons (a restaurant).• Last month, in the “Ask Marilyn” feature in Parade magazine, a “JN” from Vero Beach asked her if she felt algebra should be required in our schools.

Jerry Nashel said it was the second time he’s had a letter appear in “Ask Marilyn.” So, what’s Marilyn’s take on algebra? “She believes algebra is essential,” he said. “It’s pure logic, and all students need to learn how to think – not just what to think. Studying algebra builds brainpower; it helps students become intellectually fit for life… I hope all algebra teachers explain this to their students.”• Attention, fathers of young children: Friendship Christian Community Church in Sebastian (611 Schumann Dr.) is offering you a chance to give your wife a 2-hour break with the monthly, non-denominational “Who Let the Dads Out?” program. “It’s an opportunity for men to ‘hang’ with men and share their unique experiences as husbands and fathers,” a flier for the program says. Pastor Ron Thomas said a member of the congregation, Patti Rinabarger, came up with the idea to bring the British program to Indian River County.
It’ll be held the third Saturday of every month. The first day will be Jan. 16. For more information, call 772-589-4458 or 772-664-7503.• Mike Bushman, who owns Recycled DVDs, sends me his “Overlooked cinematic gems” columns via email. I always smile when I see his email address because he still has an Earthlink account. Mike says he’s had the same Earthlink address for about 20 years and considers it a “badge of honor.” Seriously, do you know anyone who still uses Earthlink?• Speaking of sticking with something after its popularity fades, “American Idol” will be added to the TV mix this week. Yes, I’m looking forward to the show’s 15th and final season. (I started watching in Season 3.) In case you’re wondering, the other TV shows I watch are “The Good Wife,” “The Grinder,” “Brooklyn Nine Nine,” “Fargo” and “Homeland.” Any matches?

Meet me at Table 51
Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.
I like talking with David Letts because he always surprises me. For example, last week when we met at Bob Evans for the “Meet me at Table 51” interview, I learned he was the band director at Hawthorne High School (about 15 miles east of Gainesville) for most of the 1960s. Which makes what he has done for the past 35 years – he operates Letts Bail Bonds – even more interesting. “I’ve got a million stories,” he said. Like when he once posted bail for David Gore, who, at the time, was charged with aggravated assault. This was in 1980 – before Gore faced any murder charges. The infamous serial killer was executed in 2012.
“We only bail out innocent people,” he said. “They haven’t been in court yet. They haven’t been sentenced.” He says “99 percent” of the bonds he writes are between $500 and $2,500. “I don’t write bonds I can’t afford to pay (if the person does not appear in court),” he said. Another surprise gleaned from the interview: He rejects 75 percent of those coming to him for bail. Oftentimes, those rejected don’t have sufficient
collateral. (Either that, or they don’t meet other criteria – having to do with residency, employment, the type of crime, and the amount of bail.) “Collateral talks,” he said. What’s the most unusual collateral he has taken from someone wanting bail? “A wooden leg,” he said. “It was from an old farmer back in the early ’80s. “I knew that guy wasn’t going to run.”
