Pam Cooper is supervisor of the Archive Center & Genealogy Department at the Indian River County main library.
PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Library has bios of ex-slaves, including one from Gifford
In the 1930s, the Federal Writer’s Project of the WPA (Works Projects Administration) gathered more than 2,300 accounts of slaves. In 1941, the biographies were published and microfilmed in 17 volumes and was called “Slave Narratives: A Folk History of Slavery in the United States from Interviews with Former Slaves.” The Main Library has four of the volumes. In Florida volume No. 17 is a man by the name of George Pretty (1852-1938), who lived in Gifford. According to the narrative, Pretty was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, a free man. His father was also born free, but his maternal and paternal grandfathers were born slaves in the southern part of Pennsylvania. In his narrative, he talks about growing up in Pennsylvania including how soap was made, food stuffs, curing hides of cows, making dye, washing cloths and what it was like when his mother gave birth to another
child. She would simply go upstairs in their house and disappear for a month or more. The father would tell the children that she had gone to New York or Buffalo to visit family. The term “broke her leg” was used to describe someone who was pregnant. According to George Pretty, he was knowledgeable about nature. He was often called
upon to cure ailments with herbs or roots from his homeland and in Florida. His first trip to Florida was in 1893 with a white man who was his employer. He did not remain with him and moved on to farm at Palatka, which is where he was interviewed for the narrative. He moved to Gifford in the early 1930s and died in 1938. He is buried in Fort Pierce. It has been difficult to determine if he had any family in Florida or Pennsylvania.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the election results on “Super Tuesday”:
• Buck Vocelle has been full of surprises this month. And I’m not even counting the well-known Vero Beach attorney’s new Colonel Sanders-like facial hair. The initial surprise came on Feb. 13, when I saw he had filed to run for elected office for the first time in his life – he’s seeking a seat on the Mosquito Control Board. The next surprise came two days later. When I was dropping off a copy of Lemmon Lines at his office, I noticed there was a “Donald Trump for President” sticker on his SUV – which is unusual in that most businesses steer clear of political messages. The final surprise came the following day. He revealed he was on the most recent episode of the popular “Antiques Roadshow” on PBS. OK, let’s go in order: Why run for the Mosquito Control Board?
“It intrigues me,” he said. He said his grandfather was instrumental in creating the first Mosquito Control district in the area. Plus, he gained awareness of mosquito-borne illnesses through trips to the Dominican Republic with the Rotary Club. This is about public service, period, he said. Why a Trump sticker on his SUV? “That’s not an endorsement of Trump. It’s a statement about the current state of affairs in our country,” he said. “I’d rather vote for Chris Christie, but he’s out of the race.” Why was he on “Antiques Roadshow”? Vocelle’s father, who died in 1996, had a commemorative button that was made for George Washington’s first inauguration. On the show, Buck was told the button was worth $5,000 to $7,000.

• On any given day, in driving from one end of the county to the other, I see at least three people who appear to be homeless asking for money where cars are stopped – the exit at the Walmart in Sebastian is a good example. I keep hoping the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office will intervene in the situation at U.S. 1 and 53rd Street. In the left-hand turn lane (southbound U.S. 1), a guy walks down the long line of cars and asks for money. It makes drivers uncomfortable, plus no pedestrians should be on that island. He’s been doing this for weeks.• The Republican Club of Indian River County has more than a dozen sanctioned clubs. The newest one: Professional Republican Woman & Mother (PRWM), which has 25 members. According to its mission statement, the club “is organized for the purpose of influencing, advancing, leading and communicating the Republican agenda to fellow professional women and mothers of all ages, race and religion.” Interested in learning more about the club? Check out
the website – www.prwmir.org – or send an email inquiry to [email protected].• Good news: Incoming County Administrator Jason Brown’s salary will be nearly $35,000 less than his predecessor, Joe Baird, who is making $201,960 a year. Bad news: Brown’s $167,000 salary is nearly $32,000 higher than the statewide average for a county administrator. (According to the Florida Association of Counties, the average salary of a county administrator is $135,158.)• A few weeks ago, I mentioned Mike Bushman still has an Earthlink email address (think Betamax-like). Turns out Property Appraiser David Nolte also has Earthlink.• Keep those “Stranded on a Desert Island” items coming. They’re fun to read. (Send your list of book, album, movie and celebrity crush to [email protected].) You’re up, Kathryn Westermann. “Book: ‘Sarah’s Key’ by Tatiana DeRosnay, a book I have recommended to all of my friends. … Movie: ‘August Rush’ – the music was so moving, romantic and well-acted.”

Meet me at Table 51
Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.
Joe Liguori loves telling stories. So much so that he managed to drink only a quarter-cup of coffee during our hourlong get-together at Bob Evans. To be sure, Joe has some great stories to tell. Starting with what it was like growing up in a different type of family. His father, Tony, was in the Mafia – he was in charge of the numbers racket. Joe went by “Sonny” back then. Joe, now 88, had no interest in following in his father’s footsteps. He says Joseph Colombo, the boss of a famous crime family, wanted “Sonny” to be a lieutenant. “I did not want to get involved with them,” he said.
Joe went to earn a living in a variety of ways:• He was a model for a few issues of “True Confessions” magazine.• He owned four Italian restaurants in New York.• He was supervisor of food operations at West Point.• He toured as a singer and performed with many big names. Joe, who moved to Vero Beach 20 years ago, could
talk for days about his experiences as a singer. The tenor opened shows for singers Judy Garland, Beverly Sills, Vicki Carr and Connie Francis as well as comedians such as Shecky Greene, Ernie Kovacs and Pat Cooper. He also crossed paths with Tiny Tim and John Denver. In 1981, he sang “America the Beautiful” when the Iranian hostages returned to the United States. It’s been a wild ride, and his wife, Lee, has been by his side for 66 years. “She’s a gem,” Joe said.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.
