PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Story of Orchid Island dates back to 1887
Where is Orchid Island? Our beautiful Orchid Island is right here in Indian River County. It runs from Sebastian Inlet to the St. Lucie County Line. Wild orchids grew in the Live Oak trees on the island. The Orchid Island story begins in 1887, when Lewis B. Dawson, postmaster of the Narrows completed a post office application for a small community on the Intracoastal Waterway. He called it Orchid and it was located on Frank Forster property. Dawson was a veteran of the Civil War and settled on Gem Island in 1883. Dawson and his family contributed to the area in several ways. The family started the first library called the “Narrows Public Library Association” and they also had a store for travelers on the Intracoastal Waterway. Families would stop and visit and purchase food or exchange books. Lewis Sr. died in 1904 and Lewis Jr. died three years later. Frank Forster arrived in 1883, but he did not purchase
land in the Orchid area until 1886. Most of his property was in the Wabasso area. After 1891, his orchards became famous in the Orchid area. In 1897, Forster re-applied for the post office most likely because the post office building was moved within the same section of land. The Orchid Island name soon became quite well known by the local farmers. The name Orchid could
be found in the name of the orchards, the town, and fruit packing companies. It was used extensively and the local newspaper reported “Orchid” news regularly. In 1984, a group of historians realized that Orchid Island was often erroneously called “barrier” or “North Hutchinson” island. The battle was won in April 1985 and the U.S. Board of Geographic Names made the name “Orchid Island” official.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on before filling out your bracket for the NCAA men’s basketball tournament:
• If you’ve seen the land that has been cleared for both Bent Pine Preserve and Harmony Reserve, you realize some big changes are coming to 58th Avenue. Bent Pine Preserve (just north of Vero Lago) and Harmony Reserve (off of 33rd Street) will be building hundreds of houses in the coming years. Did I mention Waterway Village is only about a third of the way to its 1,540 units? Phil Matson, staff director of the county’s Metropolitan Planning Organization, says there are no plans currently to make 58th Avenue four lanes. He’s not concerned about the road becoming too congested. “Eventually, traffic seeks an equilibrium,” he said. He gave U.S. 1 as an example. He said even though the county’s population has tripled since the 1970s, the same can’t be said for the amount of traffic on U.S. 1. That’s
because people are able to use different routes – such as Indian River Boulevard and 66th Avenue – to get from here to there. Still, Matson said, “58th is definitely going to get a pinch” because of all of the new houses being built along the north-south thoroughfare. If the slow-to-get-going Providence Pointe development (across the street from Waterway Village) ever shakes off the cobwebs, then even more cars will be using 58th Avenue. From what I’m seeing, we may be at the start of another housing boom.• It’s great to see Elite Airways is now offering flights to and from Vero Beach to Newark four days a week – Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday. (The Friday and Monday flights are just through the end of the month, though.) Certainly, the Maine-based airline took a chance in

December by setting up shop in Vero Beach, which had been without commercial air service for almost 20 years. Suffice to safe, Elite has fared better than its predecessor. Back in February 1996, American Eagle pulled the plug after only four months here.• When someone told me there’s still a chance David Nolte might drop out of the race for Property Appraiser, I scoffed because I had talked with Nolte months ago about the same rumor and he assured me he’s running. “There has never been a thought of not running,” he said last week. Nolte will be seeking his 10th four-year term in the August primary. He’s being challenged by County Commissioner Wesley Davis. The August ballot will be full of exciting local races, but this might be the best of ’em all.• While I’m not doing an official out-of-state license plate count, I couldn’t help but notice tags from Arkansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma and Wyoming last week.
Aldo Musto reported spotting plates from Alaska and New Mexico.• The “Stranded on a Desert Island” lists keep coming in. (Send your list to [email protected].) George York, you’re up. “Book: ‘The Complete Works of William Shakespeare.’ Album: The Beatles’ White Album. Movie: ‘Camelot’ (like getting a free album). Person: Bobby Knight (once a Hoosier, always a Hoosier.)”• So I was restocking Lemmon Lines at a local restaurant, and I saw a teenager was filling out a job application. He paused to make a call. “Mom?” I heard him say. “How do you spell my middle name?” I kid you not. (He wanted to know if it’s spelled with an “e” or an “a.”) When he saw a look of disbelief on my face, he sheepishly whispered an explanation: “I never use it.” Um, OK.

Meet me at Table 51
Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.
With Donald Trump and the presidential race seemingly dominating most conversations these days, it was a nice change of pace to talk with Scott Cameron about his music collection. He has 14,500 songs stored on his computer. “The answer is ‘no’ – I have not listened to all of them yet,” he said. He estimates half of his collection is classic rock. About a quarter is blues and the remaining quarter is “other” (including classical, new age, jazz and the big-band era). He has more than 5,000 songs stored on two portable devices, so he always has access to the music he has collected over the past 30 years. One portable device has 75 playlists.
“For whatever mood I’m in,” he said. Happy, sad or somewhere in between, the playlists have him covered. Scott’s wife, Sue, prefers classical music. In 1994, Scott and Sue were in their 40s when they moved here from Ohio and bought a gas station in Lakewood Park. In ’98, they built a gas station at the corner of Fourth Street and Old Dixie Highway. They were owner-operators of the stations. That is,
oftentimes Sue worked at one location and Scott worked at the other. “We liked the idea of working for ourselves and not someone else,” he said. “And, fortunately, we were able to make a go of it.” Scott says he’s following the Top 500 countdown on the next page. “You gave me pause,” he said. “Who would be in my Top 500? “I don’t know.”
Scott Cameron
Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.
What are our most popular libraries? There were 342,882 visits to the Main Library during the 2014-15 fiscal year. That was more than the other branches combined. There were 161,407 visits to the North County Library in Sebastian and 82,583 visits to the Brackett Library on the Indian River State College campus.
