PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Sebastian was not site of tragic event in 1849

Sebastian often receives credit for a tragic event that did not happen there. The place was called “Barker’s Bluff.” There is a photograph dated about 1890 that shows a high bluff in the distance and men are fishing in the foreground. Two houses sit on top of the bluff. The property was owned by Paul Kroegel and was at the confluence of the Sebastian River and Indian River Lagoon. It was a shell mound that was later removed for the use of the railroad. In 1849, John Barker was murdered by five young Seminole Braves. This actually happened in the present-day town of St. Lucie Village, just a few miles north of Fort Pierce. Thirty years after this tragic event, adventurous individuals appeared on the Indian River. Doctors with their patients seeking cures to their ailments would live on a boat for months and travel the length of the Lagoon.

In their own accounts, “Barker’s Bluff ” was often pointed out as they paddled by. They heard stories about the Indian scare of 1849, but they were uninformed as to where it happened. Some were too young to read about the event or they were from regions that may not report news from the wilds of Florida. Francis Stebbins of Adrian, Michigan, published

in his local newspaper about his three trips on the Indian River and mentioned rowing by “Barkers Bluff ” near the Sebastian River. His book “The Winter Sailor: Francis R. Stebbins on Florida’s Indian River, 1878-1888” is worth reading. The descriptions of wildlife over 100 years ago are fascinating. He talks about the phosphorescence and how beautiful the river looked at night. Can we ever get that back?

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Kevin Harvick to take the checkered flag in the Daytona 500:

• Where are the political yard signs? In any other year, I’d quickly grow tired of them before an election. But I’m actually looking forward to seeing signs for the various candidates in the weeks leading up to the March 15 Presidential Preference Primary. I’ve seen surprisingly few signs so far. On the Republican side, most of the signs I’ve seen are in support of either Donald Trump or Ted Cruz. I admit I did a double-take when I saw a sign in Sebastian for Democrat Bernie Sanders. I know there’s great interest locally in the Republican race. Almost everywhere I go, it comes up in a conversation. Trump, Trump, Trump. While I’m glad Trump is in the race (because of how much excitement he has generated), I’m one of those who believe there’s no way he’ll be the GOP nominee.

Last fall, when Trump began dominating in the national polls, a friend said he was starting to get concerned about the business mogul’s popularity. I assured him Trump had no chance of getting the party’s nomination. The day after Trump won the New Hampshire Primary, I received an email that circled back to the conversation we had a few months before. “You promised me this Trump creature would be gone by now,” he wrote. “I’m getting worried!” Not to worry, I still say. Granted, I’m not as confident in my prediction as I was last fall. If Trump beats both Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio in Florida, then I’ll be a believer. Maybe.• You’ve heard of the Drudge Report, right? Well, there’s a

new website called the Vero Report. (The home page looks just like the Drudge Report.) Check out veroreport.com. It looks like an ambitious project. Let’s just hope it’s not used to trash local candidates in the August Primary. A politically connected person told me it was created by a supporter of one of the County Commission candidates. If so, and the website is used to trash the opponent(s) of said candidate, then the website’s credibility will be shot. Which would be a shame because it’s a pretty cool site.• The long-awaited traffic signal for the intersection of 43rd Avenue and 1st Street will be a reality in a few months. Construction on the $2.2 million project is expected to begin next month, according to Kim Graham, the county’s Traffic Engineer. The traffic signal was supposed to be installed in 2015, but it got pushed back to ’16.• Treat of the week: Frank Formica, a retiree who works part-time at Bob Evans, loaned me his copy of the first issue

of Sports Illustrated – with a publication date of Aug. 16, 1954. It’s incredible to see how much the world has changed since then.• Speaking of Bob Evans, I received one of the nicest compliments I’ve ever received when I did a restocking of Lemmon Lines. When I arrived, Bill Scott introduced himself and extended his hand for a copy. “Thanks,” he said. “And thanks for doing this.” My pleasure, Bill.• Thanks to those who emailed me with their “Stranded on a Desert Island” items. (Send your lists to [email protected].) You’re up, Melissa Morales. “Book: ‘The Outsiders’ by S.E. Hinton. Album: ‘Take This to Your Grave’ by Fall Out Boy. Movie: ‘In Time.’ Person to be stranded with: Scott Eastwood.” As I told Melissa, I had never heard of “In Time” or Scott Eastwood!

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

Back in 1957, when he was 16 years old and living in Idaho, Clark Ballard bought a 1929 Model A Ford for $100. He still has the car today. He estimates the antique car is worth “maybe $15,000” – but the sentimental value is priceless. He tries to drive the 87-year-old car once a week. Clark, 74, didn’t buy the car with the intention of treating it like an antique and storing it. “A car was a car back then,” he said. “I drove it all through college.” Clark received a degree in cinema from Bob Jones University before enlisting in the Army and going to Vietnam. After he was discharged from the military, he attended

the renowned University of Southern California film school to work on a master’s degree. He was one of 13 students in the program. In the same group was none other than George Lucas, the creator of the “Star Wars” franchise. “I always joke that everybody knows what I’m doing but they wonder whatever became of George,” Clark said. “Of course, he went on to great success in Hollywood,

whereas I spent 45 years in the non-theatrical film production business as a director, cameraman and producer.” Clark’s career highlights include doing a recruiting film for the Blue Angels. He and his wife moved to Vero Beach in 2006. For eight years, he has chaired the auto show for the Indian River Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America. He’s also on the Volunteer Ambulance Squad’s board of directors and drives for the nonprofit organization one day a week.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

In Indian River County, there are about 650 miles of roads. Of those, 406 miles are paved and 244 miles are unpaved.

In addition, the county’s Road and Bridge division maintains 72 bridges.
