Climbing to the extreme heights, abseiling back down in a more adventurous way and making your way around the high ropes course using strength and mind power are just some of the ever popular activities available for all of the participants

here at NORJAM 2014. There are also some more unusual activities which you should all go and try. The labyrinth cave which certainly delivers a shock to the senses, a 30m long tunnel which covers two levels, finishing on a slide down, then a 2.5m climb up a narrow section to finish off. Drew,10 from 1st

Caister Scout Group said that it was “Fun, but it felt like a continuous tunnel!” His advice to any of you wanting to have a go is “stay low!”

Victorians Subcamp spent yesterday morning experiencing all that the Activities Fields had to offer. Crate stacking is a very popular activity which

drew participants from across the Subcamp to try their hand at working as a team. Oliver,12, and friends from 5th Ipswich Scouts all said that it was “wobbly, windy fun!” They also said that the activities here “build great teamwork” and that they have “never been closer.”

As well as all these

great activities, on site we also have some more like a trapeze where you can fly through the air, laser clay shooting, quad biking, catapults and many more. Lily,11 and Caitlin,12 from 1st Snettisham Guides said “The activities here provide an experience which develops your abilities at different things”.

As we continue through NORJAM 2014, and the sun carries on shining, the activities will thrive and continue to be as exciting as ever. Remember to keep on developing the skills if you’ve already had some experience at them. If not, then go and try something new, and remember to always have fun.

“Did you know it was once the largest walled city in the country at double the size of London?” exclaimed Daniel and Harry, 15, Vikings Subcamp. Norwich may not seem like the most interesting choice for a day off site; however as members of the Vikings Subcamp found out, there is plenty to do to occupy your time and the varied history of Norwich is fascinating. Participants were given the chance to take the Open Top city Sightseeing bus which showed them many of the famous sites around Norwich; from the colourful open top market, which is the largest in the UK, to the spectacular Anglican Cathedral, the spire of which is second only to Salisbury Cathedral. “It

was amazing to see all the historic views of Norwich and learn more about them as well” expressed Lucy, 13, and Millie, 11. “It was also nice as it wasn’t as crowded as the other places would have been, and we had lots of time for shopping!” added Michaela, 17. Norwich is in fact one of the top ten shopping destinations in the UK, with two large shopping centres in addition to the thriving shopping streets and backstreets with many local products available for purchase.

Days out are just another fantastic part of your NORJAM 2014 programme and as you continue through your Jamboree experience use this opportunity to explore with you new found friends.

400 Scouts and Guides of the Stoneage Subcamp decided they would spend a day at the East of England’s biggest theme park, Pleasurewood Hills.

Entering the site Jasper, 12, was busy looking at the map and planning the rides that he wanted to go on; he exclaimed “The Hobbs Pit looks cool and scary, let’s go.”

Kieron, 12, from 14th Wotton Scouts said “I’m looking forward to doing it all again as last time I was six and really small.” Moran, 12, added “I’m looking forward to going backwards on the Wipe Out. Areej, 12, excitedly

pitched in “I’m looking forward to seeing their faces on the big rides.”

Scouts and Guides were busily running from ride to ride ranging from the wild to the sedate. Chatting to Jo, 11, from 2nd St Thomas, she exclaimed, “I’ve never been on a roller coaster before today, I’m so excited”.

Over at the Rattle Snake the ride conductor could be heard energising the riders “is everybody ready?” YES the riders shouted as the ride whizzed off. Catching up with Olivia after the ride finished she beamed “that was so much fun”. Milly, 11 added “it was fast and awesome.”

On route to the Wave

Breaker Eloise,13, and Beth, 15, were eating lunch on the grass discussing how their morning had gone. Eloise insisted that Wipe Out and the Jolly Roger was the best, while Beth stated “the Marble Madness was scarier than I’d thought.”

Over at Timber Falls a soggy Molly, 10, from 1st Leatherhead exclaimed “that was really good!” pointing and laughing at the photos she continued “we should get that”.

In a break from the normal activities Young Leader Natalie took her Senior Section promise at the top of the Jolly Rodger with DC Joanna from Watton District, just before

it fell several hundred feet. After the occasion Natalie said “I wanted it to be a big event that I could remember and what better way than at a theme park”.

The day concluded at the sea lion show; Claude the sea lion entertained the crowd by poking his tongue out and smiling. Not being just an entertainment show the crowd was learning all about sea lion life all while he was performing tricks and acrobatics.

As the day ended, many hundred Scouts and Guides clambered back on to the coaches and you could hear tales of their exciting adventure in snippets of conversation; memories and friendships made.

All the fun of ‘Campfire with a twist’ began with the call out to the Subcamps from Pirate Jenny and Pirate George, and energetic and numerous repeats of the Cha Cha Slide to get everyone in an enthusiastic mood, they were soon ready to join in with the variety of songs that would be sung. Leading everyone in song was Susan from Norwich who is the person in charge of the It’s A Knockout Team this year. She started with

a classic to get people in the spirit for a campfire: Campfire’s Burning. Next, an important aspect of the entire NORJAM 2014 experience was sung about, as we shook our friends’ hands, squeezed their knees and scratched their backs. Friends old and new came together and laughter filled the main arena. Fred the Moose and his love of juice was also a feature, along with ‘Singing in the (thankfully no longer existent) rain’. The animal theme continued with all involved being

penguins followed by funky chickens. “For me, it summed up what it means to be a Scout,” said Simon, a member of the Roman Subcamp Team. Susan was given a break half way through as Alex, also on the It’s A Knockout Team, joined the stage to lead a few verses of Boom Chicka Boom. “It was a good laugh with my friends, the only thing that could have made it better was if it had lasted longer.” Enthused Conor and Vicki who are staying on the Saxon Subcamp.

The Market Place is once again the bustling heart of NORJAM, with all sorts of guests from inside and outside the world of Scouting and Guiding.

Mini Scrapbox are back, along with D of E, Scout and Guide shops, plus some new guests.

Unity Insurance, Kingswood Activity Centre, Edge Agricultural Apprenticeships, Marquess of Huntley’s Highland Regiment and the Lions (evening only) all join the Market Place, along with the food stores and vans, cafe, The Big Apple clothing and souvenir shop, and milkshake cafe.

We at the Norticle think the milkshakes are particularly good, and are happy to test any batches.

NORJAM 2014 was proud and privileged to host on the main stage, a very special occasion. DJ Nev asked if Kerry Ward, a Guider from 4th Norwich Guides, to join him on stage to receive her Guiding warrant. To Kerry’s surprise Chris, Kerry’s long term boyfriend, appeared on stage to make a very public proposal.

Chris said “I decided the time is right to ask Kerry to marry me, but she has always said if I asked her I had to make it special. I was thinking you don’t get much more special than NORJAM 2014. Chris continued “Kerry is not getting away with me doing it in private, so I would like to do it very publicly”. Shock and surprise clearly showed on her face but Kerry didn’t seem too fazed by Chris’ proposal… and of course she said yes!

Tucked away in a corner of NORJAM 2014, the circus has certainly come to town! Even before the curtains opened, the Big Top was alive with Mexican waves, deafening applause and even louder cheering. Campers were then treated to a feast of acts, including death-defying aerials, larger-than-life clowns and graceful gymnastics, with members of the audience often happily joining in.

There was not a dull moment from the onset, with the mischievous Emcee picking staff and participants to do a variety of tasks, usually with the

adults needing a little “hands on” help. Hanger Rose, Harley and their group of talented gymnasts put on a glittering display, with their acts earning both squeals of excitement and gasps of terror from the audience, and at all times the clowns were waiting nearby to keep everyone in fits of laughter.

Yesterday was the Romans turn to take to the big top. Georgia and Lauren, both 13 and of Bowthorpe Scout Group, enjoyed the show immensely. “It was really, really, really fun!” remarked Georgia “Aerial was my favourite, it just looked so tricky!” Lauren

agreed, stating “It was just mind-blowing. The juggling looked so difficult, but I’ve definitely been inspired to try the trampoline!”

It was after the performers tumbled and back flipped backstage that the real fun began. All at once the Big Top was filled to the bursting with spinning plates, hula hoops, and a whole manner of juggling things.

The excitement was tangible, and despite a few dropped plates at the start everyone was soon performing like professionals. Even staff got involved, with a group of them shimmying and dancing to their hearts

content – much to the delight of the watching Scouts and Guides.

The “give it a go” spirit was felt everywhere, with 13 year olds Sam, Elliot and Ryan of 37th Bournemouth Scouts describing the workshop as everything

from “Incredible” and “Fascinating” to “Fandabidosous!” Elliot especially liked how the juggler just “didn’t give up” and the rest of the group said they were eager to work on their own skills.

Whether it was the sparkling costumes, the

awesome music or just the energy of the performers, there certainly was magic in the air.

Even after the Big Top emptied, it was clear The Festival Circus was one adventure the lucky Romans would not forget in a hurry!

Named as ‘Normans’ an army of over 500 Cubs, Brownies and their Leaders arrived into the NORJAM 2014 arena parading behind their groups’ colour. They were welcomed and entertained by Jenny and George and the NORJAM 2014 dancers before being sent out to explore the Jamboree through their Norman activities.

Vicky, a leader at 2nd Spixworth Brownies said “The Opening eremony was excellent. We came to NORJAM last time and had a great time, hopefully we’ll get better weather this time.”

Emily and Abbie from 1st Corton Brownies, were really excited to be visiting NORJAM 2014 . “We thought the Opening Ceremony was really good, especially the sparks at the end.”

Amongst the activities on the programme for the Brownies and Cubs was a visit to at least three Subcamps, as well as Arts & Crafts, Charities, International and the Market Place.

Speaking to some Normans they enjoyed many different activities. Amy, 2nd Spixworth Brownies enjoyed International. “We sang songs from other continents.” Tilly from 1st Wickerwood Brownies and Milly from 1st Hingham Brownies also enjoyed International; “We played games and sang songs in the forest.”

The owls were very popular amongst all the Brownies and Cubs. After listening to a short talk everyone was given the opportunity to stroke or hold an owl. Katie, 2nd Spixworth Brownies said “I liked stroking the owls. They were really smooth.” Poppy, 1st Barnham Broom Brownies explained that her favourite thing was “Having an owl on my head. He was huge. It felt weird.”

In the Charities zone the Brownies and Cubs were invited to take the Discovery Trail. This saw them looking for the answers to questions on the different charity information boards and taking part in three

challenges. Lauren and Hope enjoyed the Senses zone activities. Lauren, 10, 2nd Goldstone Brownies explained what they had to do. “Hope had to build lego with her eyes closed and I had to guide her with instructions.”

Arts and Crafts were popular with a wide variety of creations being made and taken home. Harriet, 9, 44th Norwich Cubs tried her hand at soap carving. “It was quite hard so I couldn’t get straight edges. I’ve cut the edges off and put NORJAM 2014 on it.” Owen, 9, 44th Norwich Cubs also tried something

new “I made a Union Jack badge from beads and pins. It took 15 minutes or so to do. It wasn’t too difficult, it was fun.”

Throughout the day the Normans were able to visit the Subcamps and briefly see what life was like in these eras.

Benjamin, 9, 1st Mattishaw Cubs enjoyed his visit to the Romans “We made a mosaic design for a photoframe. My favourite Subcamp was the Victorians. I liked learning about what they did and what we do now. ”

Clara and Dani, 1st Averton Brownies enjoyed

their journey through time. “My favourite Subcamp was Stoneage, because of the cool rides that they had.” “Archery at the Middle Ages Subcamp was really really fun.” Ruben, 9, 1st Mattishaw said “My favourite thing was the [Victorian] sewers, it was pitch black, we went in, in pairs. My friend could only see me because one of my badges glows in the dark. They also had a pickpocket who tried to steal my lunch.”

At the end of the day the Brownies and Cubs were treated to a special Closing Ceremony.

As the Normans slowly retreated home; each went away with a goody bag of treasure to remember the Jamboree. NORJAM 2014 has made an impression on the next generation of participants.

Layla, 25th Norwich Brownies had such a great time “I really wish I could stay longer”. While, Gracie, Tanya and Ruby from 2nd Spixworth Brownies said they’d really like “to come to the next NORJAM”.

Tyler, 9, 1st Great and Little Plumstead Cubs had so much fun “If I was to give it a score 1-100, I’d give it 100!”

Supermoon!For the next two

Today we caught up with Allison Denyer, on the NORJAM 2014 staff working as a Senior Chief Leader on the first aid team – this is what she had to say.

Q: So what does a typical day for you consist of?A: It’s mixed, but there are a lot of long days. Our first shift starts at 8am, our last shift ends at 11:30pm, and we have people covering the emergency phones so we can act as a 24 hour service. Normally I’m in the medical centre, driving the ambulance or out on patrol.

Q: What’s your favourite part of the job?A: It’s just fun. You wouldn’t expect it, but the First Aid team have a brilliant time together, and we get to meet new people, which is always great. All in all it’s just a positive experience, getting to help people and have a laugh.

More than a plasterby Rhiannon Boden

Q: Do you have a favourite Jamboree memory?A: Yes I do, I’ve been to lots of Jamborees now. My best memory was an opening ceremony in Hylands Park. I was stood behind 40,000 people when the Jamboree started, watching the crowd and I couldn’t help but think “Wow – this is incredible.”

Q: What is it like being part of the NORJAM 2014 team?A: It’s good. Everybody here is so friendly; no matter who we meet they are always happy and accommodating. I’ve met a lot of really nice and helpful people – oh, and the food’s amazing too!

Q: Lastly, do you have any advice for our Scouts and Guides while they’re here? A: Just be careful in the sun really. Make sure you drink lots of water; you

need more than you think, and remember to eat too. Sun cream, sunhats and sunglasses are also really

important, and remember to find some shade and cool down if you need to. Apart from that just have fun!

We’ll be printing your best tweets and Facebook posts every day - we want to share your memories! Get in touch and tell us what you’re loving about NORJAM 2014!

Yesterday saw an increase in recruits for the Roman Invasion when hundreds of Cubs and Brownies joined the ranks for a day of activities and invasion practice. They had the chance to make their own mosaic whilst the Scouts and Guides built catapults to fire on any invading era.

As the Subcamp were out spreading the invasion across the Jamboree the sneaky Stoneage Subcamp were trying to turn our Subcamp back to the prehistoric era. The Romans battled back and sent them back a few

thousand years. On our early evening

activities the first round of the grand chariot race took place. 15 legions took part with some fantastic chariots and good luck to those groups through to round 2.

During the afternoon we had a special visit from JAM FMs Kayleigh who was challenged by Jupiter to ride the ‘Thunderbolt’. Keep an ear out on JAM FM breakfast for Kayleigh’s reaction and if she succeeded in her challenge.

We have also seen Roman God Jupiter making his first appearance on

Sunday night to receive his offerings from the Subcamp faithful. He was humbled to receive a range of gifts including chocolate, out of date gas pipe and a SKY box.

The Roman Gods and Goddesses look forward to receiving more of your offerings this week to keep the sun shining and the adventure increasing

Fun Times AheadYesterday was Cub

and Brownie day and we welcomed 300 young people to our Subcamp. The Subcamp staff members were all dressed up as Victorian characters to create a fun atmosphere for our visitors. They participated in a number of activities including searching through Mrs Miggins’ pies for body parts courtesy of Sweeney Todd, finger printing with Sherlock Holmes, woggle crafting and exploring the Victorian sewers!

Today is Christmas Day on the Victorians Subcamp and your Christmas cards

will be delivered to you this morning! Keep an eye out for Santa and his elves as there will be opportunities to meet him and have your photo taken with him. There will be various activities happening on the Subcamp including cleaning the chimney, making paper chains, playground games as well as making friendship bracelets and classic parlour games!

In the evening there will be a chance to meet Santa and Queen Victoria and to collect your pay as well as having your photo taken by the fireplace.

Make sure you check your invites for Tea and Tiffin to find out when your

session is!Tomorrow is Industrial

Day, there will be two big activities for you to participate in during the evening. We will be running rope making and a giant marble run so make sure you come along and give them a go!

We are now halfway through NORJAM 2014 and hope you are enjoying yourselves very much! If you have any stories or photos that you would like us to feature in the newspaper please give them to Alex, Eloise or Will or hand them in to our Subcamp administration team in the marquee by our gateway.

The Norman invasion of the Stoneage Subcamp kicked off with an energetic greeting from the Cavemen and women of the Subcamp team, dressed in fancy dress and waving as the Cubs and Brownies were guided around the site. The young people were at a loss

as to which activity to take part in first as there was such a range of things to do; from games like Stoneage hoopla and boulder bowling to crafts such as prehistoric sand art and milk bottle mammoths.

Whilst the Subcamp team entertained over 500 Cubs and Brownies, the Stoneage contingents were busy enjoying their

Days Out in the local area. The trips included seeing the highlights of Norwich, including the Castle and Forum, visiting Pleasurewood Hills for a day of thrills and enjoying the traditional fairground rides at Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach. Everyone loved the chance to explore the local area and see more of what Norfolk has to offer.

Back on Subcamp, the Caveman Olympics were a great success, with lots of young people taking part in events such as splat the saurus, chuck the trunk, caveman relay race and caveman bowls! One leader commented that it was just like the Olympics of their youth! We think it may just catch on…

Tomorrow night the Subcamp team will be running a Scavenger Hunt, with lots of things to find on and around the Stoneage Subcamp, as well as a few surprises along the way. We look forward to seeing you for a roaring good time!

It’s been lovely to welcome so many adults to our Subcamp as they take part in the Subcamp Leader’s Challenge. Don’t forget you can pick up an entry form from any Subcamp office and all proceeds will be donated to two local children’s charities, Nelson’s Journey and E.A.C.H. Also, we are still running our Stoneage Challenge, where everyone can get into the Stoneage spirit by joining in with our crafts, mini games and a whole host of other activities based on our Subcamp. Come along and join in the fun!

Yesterday was Cub and Brownie day. We hope everyone had a fantastic day and enjoyed all the activities that were available to them.

We all hope you’re enjoying NORJAM 2014 as much as we are; we are really impressed with everyone on Tudors Subcamp as they have all been helping each other.

We have had several people help others that have been lost and also groups have been helping each other out when the weather wasn’t too great!

We also have the 1st Beccles Guides wanting to say a big thank to Fareham Explorers for helping them out this weekend!

The activities for this evening are Musical in a Day and International Evening. For the International Evening, you will be making several

things, for example a willow boat and a graffiti wall. You will also get a chance to swap kneckers and badges.

We also know that today some of you will be going on Camp in Camp and hope you all have a brilliant time. We also hope you enjoy your Offsite activities and Pick ‘n’ Mix.

lil’ Viking Training DayWe were invaded by

some very little Vikings yesterday, check out our Facebook page for a picture of our Chief Viking in his costume, he does look rather menacing. He did a brilliant job of whipping them up into a battle frenzy before they had a jam packed morning filled with crafts and games. Long boat magnets and Viking helmets made terrifying warriors of them and go

kart long boats carried them to battle, well the other side of the camp.

But the Cubs and Brownies weren’t the only ones getting into the Viking spirit. There was plenty of mess with mod rock, drinking horns and pyrography rune medallions. 615th Recency Brighton Scouts and Explorers had a great time firing missiles at our Shield Shy, although it did take a while to work out that the catapult went on their feet,

even the leaders from 2nd Diss Scouts had a go (check their selfie out on our Facebook page).

Don’t forget to get your family, friends and even your dog to like our Facebook page Official Vikings Subcamp – NORJAM 2014 to find out all of the exciting things we’re up to. If you come and find Natalie or Alex in the Viking office with a funny story or adventure then you might be lucky and see yourself on there.

loom Band invasion

Today’s Activities - Ticket Colour GreenDay out

The loom band craze has arrived in the Middle Ages taking the loom bands back in time. Bits of “chainmail” accessories are appearing all over the Subcamp! From woggles, to headbands, wristbands to necklaces! The craze has well and truly arrived, so why not pop into the Middle Ages activity tent during the Pick and Mix activity times, and join in the craze? The loom bands have well and

truly arrived at the Middle Ages, so let’s see how many people we can have wearing some “chainmail” by the end of NORJAM 2014.

On another note it is with a heavy heart I must report that alongside our “furry friends’ infestation” it appears that we now also have an influx of salt dough dragons, knights, and even a few castles, as well as many other

creations to contend with! However these have all been made by our fantastic participants, and have now spread around the Subcamp.

Again if you want to join in and make your own salt dough dragon, pop in and see us during the Pick ‘n’ Mix activity times, and lend your hand to spreading them about the Subcamp!

We hope that everyone has settled in well, and is enjoying their time here with us. We are loving all of your gateways, as well as your energy! We are having

a lovely time! On another note, “The Plague” seems to have spread well so far, keep up the good work! We have even managed to infect Wayne Bulpitt, the

UK Chief Commissioner and Nikki Chapman, County Commissioner for Norfolk Scouts! Can anyone get any other VIP’s? We’d be impressed if you could!
