Land Affairs to payBCR R332 millionMERVYN KRISHNA

AFTER years of land claim dis-putes over the BlythedaleCoastal Resort (BCR), Land

Claims Court acting Judge AJ Sardi-walla signalled a settlement agree-ment,whichwill see theCommissionof Restitution of Land Rights, undertheministerofLandAffairs,payR332million to BCR for its 80% sharehold-ing in the property.

Themoneywillbeusedtopaybackcreditors and investors of the resortafter the project went into businessrescue in October last year.

The land, onwhich the resort wasto be built, has officially been givenback to the Zwelabantu Dube Com-munity Property Association (ZDC-PA). KZN developer and eLan GroupCEO Mark Taylor owned a majorityshare in the resort.

Taylor said he was still optimisticthat theresortwillbebuiltasplannednow that the land claim has finallybeen settled.

“I am pretty sure it will go ahead,it is not a foregone conclusionthough,” he said.

Taylor added, the resort still hasR200 million in pre-sale agreementsand he is excited at the prospect of fi-

nally beginning construction. Most ofthe deposits are being held in trusts.HehopestheZDCPAwill reachadeci-sion on a way forward soon.

“They are still going through the

process, but it should be quite quick. We could be on the site within 30days,” said Taylor.

Despite a number of years of dis-putes over the land, Taylor is confi-dent that the relationship betweenthe two parties is good.

“There is massive trust eventhoughwehavebeenat loggerheads.

We still believe we are the right part-ners,” he said.

Not wanting to jump to conclu-sions, the developer doubts that theZDCPAwillconsidernewplansfortheland.

“That would delay proceeding bytwo years or more,” he said.

Looking at the settlement, Taylorbelieves initial investors will be hap-py.

“After going through a businessrescue process, a credit commissionwas formed to discuss solutions.

“After the settlement, it is now aquestion of fairness but, all the inves-torswill get their initial capital back,”he added.

Lookingahead,Taylor ishoping tobe part of another success story likethat of eLan’s Simbithi Eco-estate inBallito.

According to Taylor, theBlythedaleCoastal Resort has thepo-tential to create 10 000 jobs whichcould support at least 50000 peo-ple.

During its 10-year constructionphase,100000temporaryjobswillbecreated.

Workers will be sourced fromnearby communities andwill receiveSeta-accredited training.

THE soundofmusicandcolourfulcreativity is emerging fromcountless children in rural

KwaDukuza courtesy of a successfulfashion collaboration between MrPrice, the RedCap Foundation andleadingBritishfashiondesignerHenryHolland.

Holland first touched down onSouth African shores in 2012 for hisoriginal Mr Price fashion collabora-tion, returning the following year forthe launchof a range of limited editiondressesinspiredbysomeoftheworld’smost stylish celebrities.

Among the celebritymuses was in-ternational “it” girl Pixie Geldof, whojoinedHolland onhis tour to SouthAf-rica and the RedCap FoundationSchools in KwaDukuza in November2013.

Funds raised from both Mr Pricefashion projects has raised over amil-lion rand in the last two years.

This has been channeled throughthe Iciko Arts programme into five

RedCap Foundation Primary Schools, namely: Aldinvile, Zilungisele, StChristopher, Kearsney and Nyakana.

As arts, drama, dance andmusic isnot a high priority inmost low incomecommunity schools, the Iciko pro-grammecreatesaspacethatallowsthetalented children the freedomto ignitetheir creative flare.

Iciko teachershavewitnessed first-hand how the eager pupils have bene-fitted from the classroom upgrades.

The inspired surroundings havesparked their creativity and the learn-ers love being able to use the colourfulart classrooms outside of their normalschool classrooms.

The extra space and much neededcreative materials have also helpedthemtounderstandandappreciateartmore.

Marc Eslick, the RedCap Founda-tion Manager, highlighted the signifi-cance of the time and effort that Hol-landgenerously invested into the IcikoArts Programme.

“Beyond Henry visiting us andgivingushis valuable time, the saleof his dresses through Mr Pricestores contributed towards the ex-pansion of the Iciko Arts Pro-gramme, allowing many morelearners to experience the joy ofarts in their schools.”

Sikhumbuzo Khumalo, princi-palofZilungiselePrimarySchool inKwaDukuza said Henry’s involve-ment with the RedCap Foundationhas changed the school for the bet-ter. “I’mrunningshortofappropri-ate words to extend my thanks toHenry Holland. His involvementwith the RedCap Foundation haschanged the school completely.”

Everyone is awinner in this tai-lor-made collaboration wherefashion and philanthropy havejoinedhands to inspire tomorrow’sheroes.

1100 ffoooott wwaavveess>> Giant swells impact the North Coast

SHANNON HOPKINS

THE North Coast experiencedgiant swells, reminiscent of thedestructiveMarch2007storm,

last week.Lifeguard supervisorBonganiXu-

lusaid thewaveswere“easilyeight to10 feet high” at times. Beaches wereclosed on 15,16, 21, 22 and 23 Junedue to rough surf conditions, and be-causesomeofthesharknetsweredis-turbed, making beaches unsafe.

Xulu said there was an incidentlast week where two local brotherswent out on their paddle skis, facingthe huge waves at Thompson’s Bay,despite there having been a red flagup to signal danger.

In their attempt to get to back line,

they got caught in a side wash.Xulu said oneman lost his surfski,

while the other was washed onto the

rocks.“I told two of my fellow lifeguards

to rush there to help. We dispatched

a jet ski from Salt Rock and IPSS Res-cue and Netcare paramedics also re-sponded to the scene.

“Luckily the brothers were res-cued with just minor scratches andwere inastablecondition,”saidXulu.

A Chaka’s Rock resident, LeonGroenveld, said he could feel the vi-brations of the waves at his cliff-sidehomeas theypounded theshore, andthat waves damaged part of the cliffat Morewood Cove.

A cliff shelf was broken off andlanded on the beach below, he said.

“Some people had been sittingabove the shelf that collapsed, theywere very lucky not to be hurt.

“The man-made subsoil drainsabove the cliff face exacerbated theproblem, I think. It’s a big problem in

this area,” said Groenveld.North Coast environmentalist

Duncan Pritchard said that ‘nothingreally special causes this big swell, just offshore storms and winds’.

“Thispastswell, Isuspectwasare-sult of that big cold front that causedflooding in theCape, but itmoved outto sea before it really got to us,” saidPritchard. Hesaidonceoutatsea, thewindhasabiggerarea toblowacrossand the longer the surface area itblows against, the larger the swell.

“So really it was just down to off-shorewinds,whichwedidn’t feel, buta couple hundred/thousand kilome-tres offshore would have been ex-tremely windy to cause this swell”.

He said the swell can lurk for daysafter the wind.

The Internet:friend or foe?

THERE is a lot of confusion about the meaning of theterm RSVP. Many guests see this on invitations anddo not know what they are supposed to do.

The RSVP, found on all kinds of invitations aren’tput in for a decorative purpose, quite the contrary. They imply a request. Not responding to a requestmay be regarded as bad etiquette.

The problem we experience is that even if you putan RSVP request on an invitation, guests don’t doanything about it.

This leads to the problem that hosts can’t tell howmany guests plan to attend the function.

WHAT RSVP MEANS:The term RSVP comes from the French expression

“respondez s’il vous plait”, meaning “please respond/reply”.

If RSVP is written on an invitation it means thatthe invited guest must tell the host whether they planto attend the function.

It does not mean to respond only if you are attending, and it does not mean respond only if you are notattending (the expression “regrets only” is reservedfor this instance).

It means the host needs a definite head count forthe planned event, and needs it by the date specifiedon the invitation. Some invitations carry the host’stelephone number, so you can call with your reply.

*WHY it’s INCONSIDERATE not to RSVPAn incomplete list of respondents can cause nu

merous problems for a host including difficulty inplanning food quantities, issues relating to minimumguarantees with caterers and difficulty in planningappropriate seating, among other things.

So the next time you see RSVP on an invitationyou receive, please contact your host and respondpromptly.

Treating constant neck pain with acupuncture

VOMITING is a very common, and frequentlyencountered, symptom. The causes arevast, ranging from trivial (usually selflimiting) to very severe and life threatening.

In children, especially infants, it is vitallyimportant to distinguish vomiting, from regurgitation.

Regurgitation is the effortless expulsionof gastric contents.

Beforefindingthecause, yourhealthcarepractitioner should first establish the hydration status of your child, and attend to anylife threatening complications.

Repeated vomiting, coupled with no fluid intake (with or without diarrhoea) canlead to your child being severely dehydrated.

Vomiting can lead to a range of metabolic and electrolyte complications.

The acidbase balance within the bloodstream is altered, as well as changes to thelevels of potassium (K+), sodium (Na+) andchloride (Cl), all of which are important inthe body’s normal functioning.

Potassium is required for muscle tone, and once the level of potassium drops, yourchild becomes very weak and floppy, unableto sit, stand or walk.

You healthcare practitioner should takethe time to establish a few characteristicsof the vomiting, which may assist in findingthe cause for the vomiting, and assessingthe severity of the cause.

If your child has bilious vomiting, thiscould indicate a gastrointestinal obstruction. Blood in the vomitus could indicate agastrointestinal bleed.

The causes varies from the newborn andinfant, compared to children and adolescents. Below is a simple outline of thecauses. Note the diverse organ systems thatcan be affected, giving rise to vomiting.

tionTonsillitis / otitis mediaGastroenteritisIF NO SIGNS OF SEPSISPyloric stenosis / outlet obstructionMetabolic causesNeurological causesEndocrine causesChild / Adolescent with fever (otherwise

tionsOlder child / AdolescentGastrointestinal causesChronic sinusitisDrug intoxicationMigrainesBulimiaPregnancyIf it is established that the cause of the

vomiting might be more complex than asimple viral infection / “gastricbug”, yourhealthcare practitioner will suggest variousinvestigations to assist in the diagnosis.

The management will ultimately depend on the cause. In most cases, the vomiting is selflimiting and will not warrant anymedications, except maintaining hydration.Hydration can be maintained with oral sips(if the child is able to drink), alternatively, intravenous fluids may be necessary.

Pharmacological agents are not usuallyrecommended, as this may mask the signsof a serious disease, as well as the undesirable sideeffects in children.

This means that chiropractors treatall issues related to the spinal column, includ-ingnerves, spinaldiscsaswell asmuscles, lig-aments and tendons in and around this area.Inaddition, chiropractorsalsotreatALLjointsin thebody fromthe jaw(temporomandibularjoint) to the baby toe.

Chiropractic IS different. And it is this dif-ference that has brought results to millionssince1895andcaused themtorethink thena-ture of health and the role of chiropractic carein it.

Chiropractic is scientific, thriving, safeandtakes a natural approach to better health thatavoids drugs or surgery. It SUPPORTS THEBODY and assists it in relearning its naturalability to be able to heal itself.

How long does treatment take? The first consultationwith Dr Singh takes, onaverage, about 30 minutes, and a treatmentsessionabout15-20minutesbutcanbelongerwhenneeded, thiswill vary according to yourcondition and your needs.

How long will it take to get better?Your recovery is dependent on many factors:*Your presenting complaint/problem*The length of time that you have had it for*Any other treatment procedures that mayhavebeendonebyotherpractitionersand theside effects, if any*Your own commitment to any rehabilitativeexercisesandhometreatmentthatisaskedforyou to carry out

*Andmaintenancevisitswhichyourchiro-practor may recommend. It also depends on the healing abilities of dif-ferentindividuals.Somemayshowchangesina few days/weeks, some may take months.Thesemay also be influenced by the durationthat you would have had the discomfort. For whom is chiropractic suitable?Chiropractic treatment is suitable for every-one, including new-born babies, the elderly, pregnant women and sports enthusiasts.Once you are better, your chiropractor willhelp you to maintain your own health, andkeep your bodyworking as it should, by offer-ing exercise and lifestyle advice for you to fol-low in the future.

What is the popping noise of the adjust-ment?When the two surfaces of a joint are movedapart rapidly, ashappens inachiropracticad-justment, there is a change of pressurewithin

thejointspace.Thismaysometimescauseabub-ble of gas to 'pop' - but this sound is not signifi-cant, and does not hurt.

Will treatment hurt?Adjustments (chiropractor equivalent tomanip-ulation),whencarriedoutcorrectlybyaqualifiedchiropractor, is not painful. If you have acutemuscle spasm, when even the lightest touchhurts, there may be some discomfort after themuscular knots are released. Sometimes, if youhave had a problem for some time, youmay feelsore whilst your body starts to adjust after thetreatments but not during the adjustment. Yourchiropractorwilltellyouifthisislikelytohappen. The beginning of care can be likened to going tothegymforthefirst fewtimes, itachesbutoverallyour body is healing and improving and you feelbetter for it.

Are all patients adjusted in the sameway? No. Your treatment care plan will be recom-mended to your specific needs.

Should I bring my family for chiropracticchecks?Yes.Thestrengthofchiropracticisthatitcanhelpprevent discomfort, pain and even disease, andis suitable foreveryone. It is entirelyappropriate

to visit a chiropractor even if you have no pain,as restrictions inmovement can often be detect-ed before symptoms appear.

Is chiropractic treatment safe, even if I'vealready had surgery?Chiropractic is remarkably safewhen treatmentiscarriedoutbyaproperlyqualifiedpractitioner.Your chiropractor is trained to recognize condi-tions which require referral elsewhere, and cantreatyouevenaftersurgery.InmanycasesChiro-practors can prevent unnecessary spinal sur-gery.

Why should I return if I'm feeling fine?Your chiropractor has treated you, so allowingyourbody toheal, but if youcontinue the lifestylewhich caused the original condition, regulartreatment should also continue. Would youmaintain your car with tune ups or teeth withcheck ups or wait until full breakdown and thenhope to fully resolve the problem? Orwould youmakesureall stayedwellandrequiredmuchlessfinance and time to fully restore and enjoy goodjoint andmuscular health? Our bodies are beinguseddailyandplaced throughmuchstrainwith-out receiving the necessary exercise and nour-ishment and healing time that it requires. When

yourpainhas ceased, the idea is for you tomain-tain your new lifestyle. Eventually, you will visityour Chiropractor at least once in 6months, de-pending on the state of your spine and health.

Can I adjust myself? Is there anythingwrongwithme'cracking'myneckorbackmy-self?You cannot properly control an adjustment toyourself and your relief may only be temporaryand psychological. Hearing the cracking sounddoes not mean that you have carried out an ad-justment successfully, generally, patients endupmoving joints that are already moving well, thereby, inducingawearand tear.Youcaneasilybe contributing to development of osteoarthritisif this is done. If you feel youwant to 'crack' yourjoints, it is because you need an adjustment.

WITHBoston City Campus &BusinessCollegenowopenformid-yearregis-trations for diplomas and degrees,

Boston’s marketing manager, Natalie Rab-son, uses the opportunity to reflect on howat-taining a higher education can help addressthe issue of unemployment.

“According to Adcorp labourmarket econ-omist, Loane Sharp, the retrenchment rate isnow at a 10-year high – in January alone oureconomy shed 36290 jobs – while the unem-ployment rate increased from22.5per cent in2008 to 25.20 per cent in the first quarter of2014. Thenthere’s therecentnewsthatyouthunemployment had soared from32.7percentto 36.1 percent in the six years from 2008 to2014,” says Rabson.

For Rabson, the importance of attaining ahigher education has a twofold significancethat can both directly and indirectly addressthese issues of unemployment and retrench-ment.

“Firstly, the relevance of a vibrant highereducationsector is recognised internationallyand investment therein, whether through in-dividuals who take up further studies orthrough government funding, promotes eco-nomic prosperity and greater employment.Secondly, we need to remind ourselves justhow important a relevant qualification iswhen looking forworkormerely trying tostaysecure in one’s current job.Unemploymentandretrenchmentstatistics

are showingus a ratherdesperate reality andespecially for theunemployed, it’s timetostepup,” adds Rabson.

“You should waste no time in assessingyour situation. Start by asking: Am I on theright career path? Are there areas inmy spe-cific skills set where I need to improve? Do Ihave theproperqualificationsand tools to ap-plyforajobwithconfidence? Isamatriccertif-icate, diploma or degree enough in our highlycompetitivemarket? And,where do Iwant tobe in a few years from now? Only after ad-dressing thesequestions shouldonemake thedecision on what to do next and how to do itbest,” says Rabson.

Alarmingly, thesedaysarelevantqualifica-tiondoesn’tautomaticallyguaranteeyourem-ployability, especially if you don'thaveworkexperience togoalongwith it. Thatin itself is no reasonnot to study further; gain-ing a competitive edge and acquiring the nec-essary skillsdoafterall formthe foundationofemployability.

And to those who are fortunate enoughto think theyhave secure jobs,Rabsonhas thefollowing message: “Don’t be too comfort-able. Considering the current volatile natureof our economy, many companies, big andsmall, have moved into ‘survival mode’. Re-trenchment is a natural result thereof,” saidRabson.

Rabson said acquiring a higher educa-tionhashelpedmanystarttheirownbusiness-es and grow these into successful companies.Statistics from theDepartment of Trade& In-dustry show that these small andmediumen-terprises contribute between 52 to 57% to theGross Domestic Product and account for ap-proximately 61% of employment.

“Entrepreneurship definitely does seem tobe one possible cure for the unemploymentrate. If more people had the drive and skillsto start their own businesses, thingsmight beless dire. The other reality is that these busi-nesses operate inahighly competitivemarketand whilst some do become successful entre-preneurs without having studied further, many realise that acquiring a higher educa-tion is essential for survival,” added Rabson.

Mid-year registrations for diplomas anddegreesatBostonCityCampus&BusinessCol-lege are now officially open for everyone andrun until 25 July. Prospective students don’thave towait until next year to start their stud-ies; theycanstill start in2014and immediate-ly after registration has closed on 25 July.

Not only will this give full time students ahead start, but also those who are currentlyemployedandwant to further their studies onapart timebasis. Forthosestudentswhohaveapplied to study a Unisa degree through Bos-ton and have already registered at Unisa, tu-itionwill also start in July. Do note thatwhilstthe closing date forUnisa applicationswas on25 April, the closing date for registrations atUnisa is 11 July.Boston now also offers two brand new indus-try relevant courses: a Diploma in BusinessManagement and a Diploma in Events Man-agement.
