    Prisoners will begin moving in to a new unit at Port Phillip Prison this week.

    The unit, opened by Corrections Minister Edward ODonohue, adds 118 beds to the states largest maximum- security prison.

    Mr ODonohue said the expansion boosted the Truganina prisons capacity to 1107 prisoners and created 60 jobs.

    He said the unit was one of the largest expansions of the prison system in the states history.

    As Victorias largest maximum- security prison, Port Phillip plays a critical role in managing some of our most difficult, hard-to-manage offenders, Mr ODonohue said.

    The new infrastructure will support the crucial community safety and parole reforms introduced by the Napthine government.

    Construction on the $30 million unit began in late 2012.

    The expansion has delivered new facilities to benefit the large prison population, including new processing and administration areas and holding cells for prisoner movements.

    A new central movement building will increase security for transition of prisoners internally, while two new industry and education buildings will provide training and education for the larger prisoner population.

    The prison, opened in 1997, manages more than 25,000 prisoner movements a year and has more than 200 visitors every day.

    Altonas Jill Hansen has knitted about 1800 beanies for premature babies in Melbourne and children in African nations and Papua New Guinea.

    Shes part of a western suburbs knitting group that meets regularly at the Louis Joel Art and Community Centre to make items from donated wool to give to charities.

    Ive been a knitter for many years, Ms Hansen says.

    I got the idea through the Louis Joel centre Ive become obsessed with it now. Sometimes I knit two a night.

    I actually saw a program on SBS one night. It was a terrible hospital in Africa and these little tiny babies were born.

    They were putting beanies on their heads and I was looking to see if I could recognise them.

    Centre manager Jill Bilston said more than 46,000 beanies, jumpers, scarves and booties had been knitted at the centre over the past six years.

    She said knitters also made coats for penguins affected by oil spills. When the animals are washed, the detergent irritates their skin and causes them to peck themselves. A wool coat protects them until they heal.

    Donations of wool are being sought during winter, with knitters on hand ready to create clothes and other items.

    Loads and loads of wool have come in this year, and as soon as it comes in, it goes out, Ms Bilston said.

    We have a dementia group that sits and knit squares. Those squares are then made in to blankets for [Altona-based service] Latitude, for the homeless.

So explore the neighbourhoods in Hobsons Bay and discover a world of options especially when it comes to food. Whether you are eating out or taking food home, planning to cook for an occasion or just putting together the weekly basics, shopping locally has many benefi ts. Shopping local is always good for business. It helps our local economy grow and can help create a rich experience. With a simple and well priced menu of healthy food, you couldnt fi nd a better takeaway lunch or afterschool snack option. Also try Cedars or Sammys in Newport, or Al Nada in Hudsons Road, Spotswood. The Circle and its array of fresh food draws shoppers from a wide radius. Whether you are out and about for a weekly shop, a weekend treat or shopping for entertaining (or entertainment), a stop at Altona Fresh in Second Avenue, Altona North never disappoints. Take a number and join the queue at the deli counter on a Saturday morning and try and resist the cannoli or jam donuts on the way out.

    Q. How long have you lived in Hobsons Bay?

    A. Since 1994 in Spotswood, then Newport and Altona Meadows. It seemed the perfect place to live. Close to the city, the beach, a good community feel and plenty of open space.

    Q. What is on your list of must see destinations when hosting family and friends?

    A. The 100 Steps at Truganina. We love it for the view, the natural environment and the bird habitat. I have ornithologists in the family and we always go for a walk there and along Laverton Creek when they visit.

    Q. Are there any hidden gems youre willing to share?

    A. Woods Street Arts Space in Laverton. Its revitalising the neighbourhood there. Truganina Explosives Reserve now a beautiful parkland with a scintillating view over the bay. Kororoit Creek an oasis within an industrial landscape and a haven. Altona North has some of the best international food. The Circle for Middle Eastern and fresh foods, Altona Fresh in Second Avenue is a magnet for those who love deli treats, and for the best Lebanese pizzas and spinach pies dont miss Seaside Flatbread Caf at Borrack Square.

    Q. What is the one thing about Hobsons Bay that youd like to tell the world about?

    A. That there are two must see cultural centres located here! Scienceworks, an atmospheric, interactive learning space for all ages housed in a beautiful French Revival building; and the Substation. Its like our own Tate Modern!
