THE African National Congresscelebrated victory nationally,provincially and in the iLembe
District in the general elections.The ANC garnered 62.2% of the
vote, nationally.KwaZulu-Natal — traditionally a
stronghold of the rulingparty—gavethe ANC a 65.3% victory and in theiLembe District a 93.2% victory.
In KwaDukuza, almost 90 000voters marked their crosses on theballot sheets,with theANCrecording62956nationalvotes and62448pro-vincial votes.
The official opposition party, theDemocratic Alliance (DA) recorded18 743 national votes and 17 743provincial votes.
The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP)recorded 3 482 nationally and 3 887provincially.
TheNationalFreedomParty(NFP)recorded 1 614 nationally and 1 905provinciallywhile theMinority Front
(MF) recorded 357 nationally and568 provincially.
For the first timeinthedemocratichistory of the town, the ANC scored400votesmorethantheIFPinLindel-ani, which was traditionally an IFPstronghold.

MURDER accused DumisaniNxumalo, appeared in theKwaDukuza Magistrate’s
Court on Monday morning, underheavypolicepresence,forthemurderof African National Congress (ANC)volunteer Nuh Mhlongo (30).
Nxumalo (28) was arrested byKwaDukuzaSAPSonThursday,adayafter Mhlongo was shot dead at theANC information centre inLindelani,KwaDukuza, just after voting had
closed.Intensive investigations led to the
arrest of Nxumalo in Pongola.It is alleged that on May 7, at
around 9.30pm, Mhlongo was alleg-edly killed by unknown suspects.
The motive for the killing is un-known at this stage.
A case of murder was opened atKwaDukuzapolice station for furtherinvestigation.
Nxumalo was not asked to plead.He was remanded in custody untilhis bail application on Monday, 19
May.Theprovincialtaskteamhastaken
overtheinvestigationandcannotruleout the possibility that further sus-pects couldbearrested in connectionwith the incidence.
Outside court members of theANC protested against Nxumalo’sbail.
A groupof InkathaFreedomParty(IFP)members also gathered outsidethe court saying that Nxumalo wasthe wrong suspect and that the realsuspect was an ANC member.
INorder tomeet thedemandforbloodinSouthAfrica, the South African National Blood Ser-vice (SANBS) must collect an average of 3 000units of blood a day.
One unit of blood can save up to three lives.The need for blood never stops, so it is impor-tant that donors and prospective donors do-natebloodinordertosavelives.Thecommuni-tyofKwaDukuza isadvised that thenextblooddrive will take place at Boston College onTuesday, 27 May from 9am to 2pm.
Community members are urged to roll uptheir sleeves and help save lives.

SENIORmembers of the AfricanNa-tional Congress (ANC) paid their re-spects to the family of murder ANCvolunteer Nuh Mhlongo (30), whowas shot dead outside a polling sta-tion in Lindelani on election day.
National executive member Nko-sazana Dlamini-Zuma, provincialchairmanof theANCSenzoMchunu,provincial secretary Sihle Zikalalaand PEC member Nomusa Dubevisited the Mhlongo family on Fri-day.
Mchunu said he thought longstanding political rivalry and vio-lence between Lindelani’s IFP andANCmemberswasathingofthepast.
Dlamini-Zuma told ANC support-ers that they should not hold anygrudges.
“Our thoughts and prayers arewith the family and friends of ourmurdered comrade at this difficulttime and we wish them strength andfortitude during this time of sorrow,”she said.
Mholongo, a mother of three, hadbeen facilitating at the ANC’s infor-mation tent.
Hercousin,NtombiHadebe,alsoavolunteer said they were waiting tobegincountingwhentheshootingoc-curred.
Zikalala said that he condemnedthe “heinous and barbaric attack inthe strongest possible terms”.
“It is clear that thekillinghadbeenwell planned to instill fear amongANC volunteers on election day,” hesaid.
“The Lindelani area has, over theyears, been known as a ‘no-go’ areafor ANC members during electioncampaigns. We call on our memberstoremaincalmandresistbeingintim-idated by this act of cowardice,” saidZikalala.
Headdedthemembersofthepartyhas met with senior management ofthepolicetoensurethat theypayseri-ousattentionto thismatterso that theperpetrators can be apprehendedand be brought to book.

RESIDENTS of Zamani Town-ship, near Darnall say theyhave had enough with the
KwaDukuza SAPS and are now call-ingontheMECforSafetyandSecurityto intervene in their ongoing issueswith local taxi security.
The residents are accusing theKwaDukuza Taxi Association securi-ty guardsof abuse, saying the guardsregularly force themoff buses, insist-ing that they use taxis instead.
The residents say that they havecontacted the police a number oftimes,but theirpleas fallondeafears.
They are now calling on the MECto remove the security guards fromthe Darnall route.
The residents closed the R102 be-tween KwaDukuza and Empangenilast week using a burning car, treebranches, pipes and burning tyres.
Ward two councillor Ntsiki Pak-kies said the protesters claimed thatthe security guards regularly forcethem to use taxis.
“Theywantmetoremovethesecu-rity guards and I do not know how Iam going to do that because I do nothave the power to do so,” saidPakies.
KwaDukuza Taxi Associationchairperson BongizweMhlongo saidtheywerenotawareof the communi-ty’s complaints.
“Ifanyonehasacomplainttheyarefreetoletusknowandthatmatterwillberesolved.Ifasecurityguardabusesyou in any way, you should open acase and none of t he Darnall resi-dent has done that!” said Mhlongo.

KWADUKUZA mayor Ricardo Mthembuwas humbled by the support of votersand pledged to work with other parties
for peace and stability.Mthembu was speaking after the release of
the election results on Monday.“Wepledgethatwewillrepaytheconfidence
that people have put in us by ensuring that wedeepen the gains of service delivery, peace andstability.”
He said the only dark cloud was the fatalshooting of an ANC supporter outside a votingstation in KwaDukuza on Wednesday.
“Wehavenotedwith shock and sadness theincident inKwaDukuzainwhichoneofourvol-unteer Nuh Mhlongo was gunned down.
“We wish to send our deepest condolencesto the family of comrade Nuh for the sad losswhich has spoilt what would have been a rela-tively incident free elections.”
Mthembusaiddespite theirpositive results,theANCbelievedtherewasnotimeforcompla-cency.
“The task that lies ahead of us to accelerateservice delivery requires all of us to work to-gether.
“The time to take KwaDukuza to anotherlevelisnow.Thismeansthatallofushaveadutyto put our collective shoulder to the wheel un-derstanding the enormity of work that stillneeds to be done with the backlogs of servicedelivery.”Hepledged toworkwithall thepoliti-cal parties for change and prosperity.

He said the ANC would use its victory as aspringboard to completely liberate the people.
“We cannot afford to permanently bask inthe sun of our victory for ever. Neither can weafford to slip up from this political pedestal wehave reached.
“Our people have entrusted us with a clearmandate to consolidate and increase servicedelivery. Let us all ensure that this begins to-day,” he said.

I AM not an academic, but even withthis benefit I have read enough toknow that the future of literature is
bleak.In fact, when pondering the pros-
pects of the written word, I immedi-ately want to gnaw through my anklein an effort to bleed-out slowly.
Should this ever happen, I can onlypray that some Samaritan-type willnot throw one of the Hunger Games orTwilight novels my way as a source ofcomfort in my dying hours.
I will use the paperback to beat my-self into a coma after assaulting theSamaritan.
The Hunger Games and Twilightsagasarejusttwoofmanyrecentbest-selling series that are regarded as liter-
ary manna when it comes to milkingteen and 20-something angst andskyrocketing sales for publishinghouses.
Let me see if I am able to summa-rise the intricate, unique plots forreaders of this column: Twilight dealswith forbidden love between a sparkly,centuries’ old male vampire and a 17-year-old human female and all ofthe emotional quandaries that wouldentail.
The Hunger Games deals with ateen that has to fight her way througha dystopian post-apocalyptic worldand all of the emotional quandariesthat would entail. It was tough, butI think that about captures all of thesubtle nuances and complexities of
each.Both series have ‘taken the
world by storm’ and have seensuch success that they have beenmade into hit movies by that oth-er beacon of hope when it comesto quality production – Holly-wood.
For reasons known only toperpetual crack users, Twilighthas been compared to the nov-els of Jane Austen. Perpetual ticusershaveratedtheseriesas‘one
of the best reads ever’.The Hunger Games has received
even more favourable reviews, eventhough someone like horror-writerStephen King has given the series a‘B’ because it’s predictable and adultswould be able to pick up on the writingflaws. Pot, kettle, black?
What Fyodor Dostoevsky wouldhave thought of this is open for de-bate, although I am guessing poisonintravenouslyadministeredoveradec-ade or so would be his wish.
As for comparing the writing inTwilight to Austen; Jane Austen wasan inimitable writer. Her skills were andare admired internationally by aca-demics and plebs like yours truly. Andher characters actually had...well,
character. Let us compare this to Twi-light. Consider this inspired quote fromheroine Bella Swan, talking about theuber-pale, uber-intense, uber-limp-lettuce-leaf personality of vampireEdward: “I wasn’t interesting. Andhewas.Interesting…andbrilliant…andmysterious…and perfect… and beauti-ful…and possibly able to lift full-sizedvans with one hand.”
As for the Hunger Games, so violentis it that parents have lobbied becausethey deem it age inappropriate for theyoung teen market. It has been com-pared to a graphic novel made for Hol-lywood, and no doubt the publisherhad this in mind when agonising overhow much carnage would increasesales. Why Twilight and The HungerGames have ‘swept the world’ is notmuch of a mystery, given their market-ability and sales potential.
If, however, young bibliophiles areopen to being challenged by literaturethat has more depth than a petri-dish,we should encourage them to read theclassics. It may surprise many to findthat lust, intrigue, passion, obsessivelove, murder, war and tragedy can bewritten with conviction, beauty andwhat we generally find lacking in thebestsellers of today - insight.

DIPPY Moodley will be seekinghis double green numberwhen he attempts the Com-
rades Marathon from Pietermaritz-burg to Durban on 1 June.
Moodley completed 10 successiveComradesMarathonin2000andwasover the moon after earning his firstgreen number, finishing the epic89km race in a time of 9:05.Moodleywill be aiming to finish his 20th Com-rades Marathon next month in thehope of earning his second greennumber.
He came close to earning a “dou-ble-green” last year in the “up-run”,butwaspulledoutof theracebyCom-radesofficialsafterfailingtomakethelast cut-off at Polly Shorts with lessthan 12km remaining.
Moodley said: “Last year’s racewas run in absolutely humid condi-
tions and the heat took its toll on anumber of runners with more thanhalf thefieldof20000athletesbailingout of the race.
“Despite the pain and aching feetI continued to persevere in the hopeofcrossingthefinish line inPieterma-ritzburg only to find that I failed tomake the final cut-off.
“Last year’s disappointmentserved as a motivation for methroughout the last ten months and Ihavebeenhardattraininginthehopeof finishing my 20th Comrades Mara-thon on 1 June”.
Moodley made his debut in theComrades Marathon in 1991 finish-ing the “downrun” in a splendid timeof 8:45. He ran his first Two OceansMarathon in Cape Town in 1996 andcompletedahat-trickoffinishesinthemother city over the last three years(2011-2013).
He skipped the TwoOceansMara-
thonthisyeartoparticipateintheBuf-faloMarathon in East London finish-ing the 42km race in a time of 4:08.
He spends more than 20km daily(Monday to Friday) running on theroads from Stanger to Kearsney. Onweekendshelooksforwardtopartici-patingin42kmor21kmKwaZuluNa-tal Athletics calendar races.
He used the Freedom Day Mara-thon inChatsworthashis final race inpreparation for the 2014 ComradesMarathon finishing the 56km race ina time of 5:38.
The 60-year-old Moodley is look-ing in fine mettle and is confident offinishinghis20thComradesMarathonin thehopeofearningadouble-greennumber.

The teamwill take part in the AllAfricaYouthChampionshiptobeheldin Botswana from 24 to 30 May.
President of KwaDukuza Volley-ball Association Isaac Abraham con-gratulated Jaram on her appoint-mentandwishedhereverysuccessatthe All Africa Games.
Jaramboasts awealthof adminis-trative experience spanning morethan a decade, having served in vari-ous positions in the KwaDukuza Vol-leyball Association including secre-tary, records clerk, vice-presidentand presently the position of publicrelations officer.
In 2011 she served as the headcoach of the KZN youth female outfit,who won gold in the National YouthVolleyball Championship held inBloemfontein.
In2012, theKZNyouthsquad (un-der the guidance of Jaram as headcoach) finished third in Inter-Provin-cial Youth Tournament in Durban.
She has been actively involved inmentoring and coaching junior andyouth teams in preparation for nu-merous inter-district tournaments.
In 2011 she served as manager ofthe local volleyball outfit, KSST whoclinchedtheVSA(VolleyballSouthAf-rica) Cup inTongaat and in2012 theywere placed a credible fourth in theVSA Champions Cup in Cape Town.
In 2013 shewas appointed execu-tive member of the KwaZulu-NatalSports Council. In March 2014 sheservedasmanageroftheKSSTsquad,whowere crowned champions in thesecondKwaZulu-Natalinter-clubvol-leyball tournament.
She is a worthy ambassador ofKwaDukuza Volleyball Associationandplaysapivotalroleasgeneralsec-retary of KwaZulu-Natal Volleyball.
In other volleyball news, the asso-
ciation is hosting a corporate knock-out tournament commencing onWednesday, 21May and culminatingin the final on Friday, 29 May.
Thetournamentisopentomen(35years and older) and women (21years and older). The entry fee ofR300mustbepaidprior to thedraws.
All matches will be played on aknockout basis.

Masikane qualified to partici-pate in the SA Masters Champion-ship after winning the KwaZulu-NatalAthleticsMastersChampion-ship at Kings Park Stadium earlyApril in a splendid time of 20 min-utes.
In Rustenburg, he started offslowly bidinghis timeat the rear ofthe field in the first 1 000m beforemovingintofifthspotatthehalfwaystage.
His late dash of speed in the lasttwo rounds of the 400m trackcaught the eye of the huge crowdandselectors, finishing the5000mrace in 22minutes to earn his firstbronzemedalatanationalchampi-onship.
Immediately after the race hewasapproachedbyAthleticsSouthAfrica (ASA) who encouraged himto work hard over the next sixmonths in the hope of breaking the18 minutes mark.
“Thebronzemedal I received atthe SAMasterswill definitely serveas a catalyst and I have already setmy sights on participating in theWorld Masters championship inBrazil in 2015, Masikane told theWeekly.
“I did not sit back and admiremymedaleachday,butinsteadIhavein-tensified my training campaign fo-cusing on participating in short rac-es from 5 000m to 10 000m in thenextsixmonths in thehopeofbreak-ing the 18minute barrier and there-byworkingtowardsearningtopspotin next year’s SAMasters and there-bygetting thenod to jet off toBrazil,”he added.
Apart from earning a bronzemedal in the5000mrace,hepartici-pated in the 10 000m race after-wards and was ecstatic after claim-ing third spot to claim yet anotherbronze medal.
The former Umvoti Athletic Clubof Greytown made in debut in theComrades Marathon in 1994 andwas astoundedwith his sub-7 hoursfinish to earn his first silver medal.
In 2008 he joined KwaDukuzaAthletic and earned a bronzemedal
in the 2008 and 2010 ComradesMarathonbeforejoiningtheDolphinCoast StridersAthletic Club in2011.
Masikanewas indebted to the of-ficialsofhis club forproviding trans-port for its members to Rustenburg.
Hesaid:“Duetoa lackof financialresources,wehad to sleep inaclass-room and not enjoy the luxury ofsleeping on a bed on the eve of therace.”
With his wealth of talent and ex-perience spanning almost 20 years,Masikane hopes to approach theKwaDukuzaand IlembeMunicipali-
ty in the hope of preparing their ath-letes for the forthcomingKwanalogaGames.
He feels that it is his duty to giveback something to his communityand is prepared to assist schools(freeof charge) in theirathleticspro-grammes and cross country races(rangingfromdistancesof1000mto10 000m).
