Since the gruesome incident, bodies of the alleged hitmen are being found in vari- ous locations on the North Coast. At least four more men, believed to have been involved in last Wednesday’s deadly ambush on a convoy of a Maphu- mulo Taxi Association boss, have been found dead with gunshot wounds, be- tween KwaDukuza and Darnall. But who is behind the killings remains a mystery. Wednesday’s shooting which left three people dead and two others injured took place off the R74 Stanger Manor Highway near Chett’s Cafe. The Maphumulo taxi boss known as “Ten Ten” Ngiba - the brother of the Ma- phumulo Taxi Association’s chairman and manager of the Maphumulo section of the KwaDukuza rank - a security guard and a ‘hitman’ were left dead after the drawn out shoot-out in the “peaceful” neighbourhood. The incident spilled into the Stanger Hospital casualty ward where two armed security guards forced their way in look- ing for their client, Ngiba, who had been taken to the hospital. The armed men left soon after checking on their colleague and boss who sustained gunshot wounds to the leg and head. The taxi boss was de- clared dead at the hospital. Hawks investigate violent attack

However, the SAPS organised crimeunit, the Hawks, recently tasked withinvestigating the violent taxi attack, believe they are “close to a break-through”.

Hawks spokesperson BrigadierHangwani Mulaudzi, while reluctantto reveal sensitive information, saidthey are busy compiling a list of sus-pects involved in the hit.

“We are tracing all who we believewere involved in the attack and arepositive we will soon have a break-through,” he said.

A source close to the investigationsaid a suspect, who was found withgunshot wounds at a local hospital onWednesday lastweekandisnowbeingdetained at an undisclosed location, was providing the investigatorswith alist of the hitmen involved.

“We now know there were 17 hit-men and that they used three vehicles- an Audi, VW Jetta and BMW X5 - toget away from the scene.” The sourcesaid the hitman killed in the gunfightwas foundwith R30 000 in cash in hispocket, his likely fee for taking part inthe hit.

“The majority of the hitmen werefrom Umlazi. We had received infor-

mation that such an attack was com-ing, but we didn’t know where andwhen,” he said.

Recounting the attack aMaphumu-lo Taxi Association member said theywere travelling on Primrose Street, asthey often did on their way to the rankwhen the shoot-out ensued.

He said it seemed like there was agroup of people in blue overalls work-ing around the corner, however, whenthey got closer they brandished fire-arms and started shooting. The Ma-phumuloconvoyof security guards re-turned fire killing one of the hitmen.

Two Maphumulo security guards, onlyknownasDubeandPetrosMkhizewere also wounded.

According toKZNSAPS spokesper-son Colonel Jay Naicker, the taxi bossandhisconvoyofsecurityguardswereambushed. He said the suspects hadleft the scene in their own getaway ve-hicles, later recovered in the Darnallarea. Residents awoke to gunfire thatreportedly lasted for over 10 minutesas the convoy was ambushed.

Aresident,whosepropertytheinci-denthappenedinfrontof,wasterrifiedby the incident that “sounded worsethan firecrackers”.

Choosing to remain anonymous, she told the Weekly what she heardduring the ordeal.

“At around 6:20am, just as mygrandsonwas about to leave forwork,we suddenly saw smoke everywhereand the gunfire started,” she said.

“My grandson ran back into thehouse shouting ‘Nani [granny], getdown on the floor,’ and the noise car-ried on for 15 to 20 minutes. We wereterrified.” Police hadmarked over 130spent bullet shells on scene with mostonthestreetandsomeinsideoneoftheresidences on the street.

TransportMECWilliesMchunu ex-pressed “grave concerns over thealleged taxi-relatedshooting incident”and admitted that the violence wasmost likely linked to the dispute be-tweentheKwaDukuzaandMaphumu-lo Taxi Associations.

Less than two weeks ago he ad-dressed the two associations overcurbingtheviolenceafterMuziMhlon-go, a member of the KwaDukuza TaxiAssociation’s executive, was killed onNew Year’s Eve. Three murder cases, one of attempted murder and one in-questdocketwasopenedatKwaDuku-za police station.

A ONEyearold boy was shot and killed andhis12yearoldbrotherwaswoundedinwhatis believed to be an attack related to the on

going taxi violence gripping KwaDukuza and Maphumulo.

According to provincial SAPS spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker the family of Maphumulo taxi rankmanager Mthobisi Mhlongo was attacked at theirhome, in the Mbitane area, on Friday night.

Naicker said the attackers attempted to set thehome on fire before firing shots and killing the toddler.

“The children’s father was not home when theattack took place. After receiving a report policeproceeded to the scene, but the boy had alreadydied,” Naicker said.

Members of the Maphumulo Taxi Associationsaid some of them no longer sleep in their homesas they fear for their lives after a split within theassociation.

It is believed that the ongoing violence has left

approximately 20 members dead since it begantwo years ago.

According to witnesses, the attackers werearmedwithAK47rifles.However,thishasnotbeenconfirmed.

The association is now hoping that MEC forTransport, Community Safety and Liaison WilliesMchunu will put an end the violence.

The Maphumulo SAPS is now appealing to thecommunity to assist them in locating the attackers.

The actual motive for the attack is still unknown. KwaZuluNatal commissioner LieutenantGeneral Mmamonnye Ngobeni condemned thekilling.

“We are confident that our members will workaround the clock and arrest these heartless murderers.

“These individuals who kill people indiscriminately must be brought to book and we appeal tothe community at large to work together with police to remove these thugs from society,” Ngobenisaid.

Those with information regarding the whereabouts of the suspect are urged to contact CrimeStop on 0860010111.

The 56- six-year-old NkosiyabantuMkhize has been deemed “fit towork”and left to his own devices.

After getting a disability grant formany years since, Mkhize then re-ceivedanotification to suspendhis so-cial grant in February last year ongrounds thathehadbeen found“fit foremployment”, giving him 30 days torespond.

“This cameasa shock tomeas I amstill in the same condition as I wasthose many years ago and I am an oldman now. What do they expect me todo?” said Mkhize. After appealing thedecision to cut off his disability grant,Mkhize was assessed by a doctor ap-pointedbySASSAinKwaDukuzainOc-tober last year.

“I went back to SASSA tore-apply for the grant and Iwas served with a letterfrom the executive region-

IAMahappy person by na-ture.My resolve is: there isnopoint inbeingunhappy.

Itweighsmedown, makesmevulnerable to all kinds ofthings that I don't want to bevulnerabletoandiscrappyforthe universe, with all the al-readybadkarmabeingputoutthereby...ohyeah, everybody.

So instead of sulking andgaping, which I'm not sayingI don't do – I'd be inhuman ifI didn't ever do those things –I quickly dealwith it, put it be-hind me and move on. I'm ofthe belief that every problemcan be solved with a bit ofthought and diligence and ifafter thought and diligencethere is no solution...thenmaybeyourproblemiswrongor doesn’t exist.

We so readily complainabout everything and thekitchensink thatwe forget theactual problems there are intheworld. Imeancanwereal-ly compare the flat tyre on theway towork thatmade you allof 20 minutes late to the star-vation of a child in a war-torncountry?

Now don't get me wrong, Iam in noway trying to belittleyourflat tyresandtheheapsofyelling you had to take fromyour boss, but really, can itcompare to the true pain andsufferingofthatchildorofthatcountry?

Can it compare to a manonce living an average life be-ingthrowntothestreetslosinghis family and being reducedto abeggarbecause job loss inour country is a very realtruth?

It's really disappointingthat we have so much yet ap-preciate it so little.

Obviously if youarereadingthisyouhaveaccesstoanews-paper ina functional areaandare not totally bad off. We livelives that couldbe spectacularsimply because we live freelyinaplacewheretheworstnat-ural disaster is heavy rain.Butno,wewouldmuchrath-

erharponthesmartphonewewant, but can't get...immedi-ately, the roadblock fromwhich YOU got a ticket be-cause YOU weren't wearing aseat belt or the astronomicalfight YOU had with so and soover such and such and nownothingwill ever be the same.

I'm sure you will get thatsmartphone eventually andthe ticket will be ignored untila summons comes aroundandyoubegrudginglypayitoffand “so and so” will forgive

you and all will be well or “soand so” will go away and youmay be all the better for it.But, look at that, it's all YOU,YOU, YOU isn't it?

We are selfish creatures, humanbeings, I admit, Imostdefinitely am,but I appreciatewhat I have and I admit whatI am.

We live in a time of denialand self loathing...it's nothealthy at all.

I thinkwe should be happyfor allwehaveandappreciateit. That crappy job, is a job atleast...that Nokia cellphone isbetter thannothing at all, thatticket for not wearing a seatbelt could be the wake up callyou need to avoid future tick-ets and potentially save yourlife.

We have so much - it's ourduty to make the best of it.Smilealittle, takeamomenttoconsider what if you didn'thave what you have today.

Don't complain becausetimes are tough and cash istight, aspire to better timesthrough positivity and hardwork. Manmakesmoney, butmoneywillnevermakeaman.

Be happy and positive andtheuniversewill pay it back toyou.

Live happily, love com-pletelyandlaughheartily...it'sthe only thing people will re-member when all you are is amemory.

South Africa is allowing ISIS andits friends to set training camps inthis country. I donot believe it andI hope it is not true.

HARNESSING the power of online teaching for apersonalised learning experience, Boston CityCampus&BusinessCollegeis proudtoannounce

its affiliation with American GED Testing Service withthe intention to provide more South Africans with aGrade 12 equivalency certificate.

“Today it has become critical to obtain a high schoolcertificate.Without it, the likelihoodof landingaquality, successful career is nearly impossible. For example atretail stores likeMcDonalds, evenflippingaburgerpattyrequires a matric certificate,” said Ari Katz, the CEO ofBoston.

Katz added that for young people entering thework-force for the first time, theGEDcertificateassures futureemployersthattheemployeehasattainedarequiredlev-el of competency. For older adults, the GED may allowthemtomove toabetterpaying, more secureworkplaceposition.

Sincemany companies have instituted policies thatall employeesmusthavematricorequivalent, someem-ployees now have to attain their Grade 12 equivalencein order to keep their jobs. “This GED programme pro-vides themwith the ideal opportunity to continue earn-ingwhile they learn, and complete theGrade12equiva-lence,” said Katz.

Getting this all-important credential doesn’t have to

be time consuming.“Toomanypeoplewhodon’t haveagrade12equiva-

lencecertificatearediscouragedbythethoughtof takingupschoolingagain. They feel they’ll bewasting timeandeffort. The thought of sitting in a classroomof teenagersdoesn’t sit comfortably with them either.

“This definitely isn’t the case when registering atBoston. Our students get their GEDcredential by study-ing at one of our 44 campuses or online, and this can bedone by studying for just a few hours a week for elevenmonths,” said Katz.

In addition, through the customised and monitoredlearning curriculum designed to help students reachtheir fastest learning speed, thewhole process of study-ing is streamlined to deliver success.

“For us it’s important that all our students succeedand we try to achieve this by making things as easy aspossible for them. Forget about the ‘one-size-fits-all’classroom set-up, with Boston everything a studentneeds is online-teaching, practice tests, books and tu-tors; and tutors monitor student progress continuallymaking sure no one falls by the wayside,” added Katz.

One of the greatest advantages of the GED system isthat students study one subject at a time.

Thisallowsstudents tobe fully focusedand immersedinthesubjecttheyarestudying,againincreasingthesuc-

FOLLOWING a busy period of newmodel launches inSouth Africa last year, 2015 shows no sign of slowingdownwithmanyallnewvehiclesandupgradesheaded our way. Here are some of the highlights:

Sports carsWellheeled highperformance enthusiasts have

several pulsequickening cars to look forward to, including the new twoseater MercedesAMG GT whicharrives in May to replace the SLS. In March the muchawaited C63 AMG will make its local debut, and competing with it for the attention of hotblooded petrolheads will be the highperformance Lexus RCF, flagship of the new RC coupé range arriving later this year.

Another notable sports car headed here aroundNovember is Ford’s Mustang. Also on the possible radar for 2015 is Porsche’s venomous 911 GT3 RS.

Honda’s Civic TypeR will give boyracers something to get excited about when it lands in the thirdquarter of this year sporting a powerful new turbo engine, while Mini’s rapid John Cooper Works, Audi’s hotRS3 and thirdgeneration TT are also on the 2015launch list. Mazda’s MX5 and the Spider version of Alfa’s stunning 4C give convertible fans something tolook forward to.

City carsAt the more modestly powered and priced end of

the market, several new affordable smallcar rangesare headed our way, starting with the Asegment Suzuki Celerio hatch later this month to replace the Alto.It will be followed in February by VW’s new Up! threedoor hatch, a small car with big ambitions.

Other upcoming city cars are the new Toyota Aygoarriving around midyear, and a safetyupgraded Datsun Go (with ABS and airbags). Daimler’s Smart Fortwo city car gets here in December followed by the

TheDetroitsawmanyoftheclassiccolours—redsforPorschesandothersports cars— and a few less conven-tional (a Nissan Titan pick-up truckdecked out in “forged copper”).

But there was no mistaking thepre-eminence of white. Particularly

at the Volkswagen stand, where sev-eral cars, the stairs and much of thefurniture was white.

In a multibillion-dollar industry, nothing is put to chance and nothingis done by mistake, of course.

AtleasttwodesignersinDetroitre-ferredtothe“Appleeffect”—theCali-fornian tech giant — to explain thepropensity for white vehicles.

Sitting at a white table, on whitechairs, in a white room, Oona Schee-pers of Volkswagen told AFP: “Whitefor cars really peaked in the 1970sand 1980s, and then all of a suddendisappeared.

“But in the past 10 years we havenoticed an increase again in white. And it definitely camewith the AppleiPod era because Apple started to doeverything with white, and a lot of

chrome or metal finishes.“In combination it was nice

and fresh. But before that, whitewas really not selling in Europebecausepeopleassociateditwithdelivery cars and it looked cheap.

“But the combination with metaland chrome looks fresh and com-pletely new.White is boomingworld-wide.”

So ifonewere tochooseablackve-hicle over a white one, what kind ofperson would that make you?

“Youcouldbesporty.Butpeople inhot countries like white.

“Whitedefinitelydeflectsheat, butif youhaveablackcar it cangetdamnhot inside. And then in a country likeSouth Africa you often have to over-take into direct, oncoming traffic, butwhite is very visible.

“So it’s a safety feature as well insomecountries.Metallicgreyorblackjustmelts into the colour of the tar, soit is not that visible.”

Susan Lampinen, chief designer, colours and materials, at Ford, saidthecolourwassocrucial tosomepeo-ple that they would buy a car purelybecause of that—nevermind the de-sign of the vehicle.

She too identified an Apple rippleeffect in propelling white to a best-seller worldwide for Ford.

“White is very clean, very techni-cal, very modern. So most cars lookgood inwhite,” shesaid, addingotherpopular colours included blacks andsilvers, while blue is also on the up.

Lampinen identified only “slightdifferences” in preferences in differ-ent countries because, she said, ofglobalisation. Environment, cultureand climate can all effectwhat colourcar someone might buy, she added.
