Teaching English with BYOD: An Introduction

Sandro WoodtliKantonsschule am Brühl

A few thoughts …

1. BYOD is not a method.

2. A minimum requirement of how much the device has to be used is ineffective.

3. The students have to be taught how to work with BYOD.

4. Working with a digital device has to be mastered in order to be ready for tertiaryeducation.

5. Teaching does not improve with BYOD.

6. Using digital devices in the classroom does not need to create an added value. Itneeds to have a value. (Wampfler 2017)

Agenda

1. Digital Textbooks

2. Creating and using digital worksheets

3. Cloud storages and collaborative tasks

4. Personal usage of device

Advantages of digital textbooks

+ more freedom in lesson planning (listenings do not need to be done in classroom)

+ students can do listenings in individual speed:- speed can be adjusted without loss of quality- 5 second jump-back function

+ gateway to flipped classroom

+ more responsibility for students (integrated keys),

+ more time for speaking opportunities

+ student progress can be monitored by creating online classes

+ students tend to work faster (particularly with devices with pens/pencils)

+ «I have forgotten my book» does not happen any more …

Disadvantages of digital textbooks

- Ordering and installation procedure can be cumbersome

- Transitions phase can be laborious

- More responsibility for students …

- Technology can break down.

Flipped Classroom

«The idea of the flipped classroom is quite simple. Direct instruction is done through video, or some otherdigital learning object, which students can individuallyuse before they come to class. This time shift allows theteacher to use class time for work that is either done asa large group or requires individualized attention by theteacher.» (Bergmann and Sams, 2015)

Flipped Classroom

«Teachers have to and may thus assume that learners exploit their ownsources of knowledge. Consequently, flipped classroom means acquisition ofknowledge without teacher activity. You only need to agree upon what topic, what knowledge, what content the learners consolidate for the next meeting– and then they can be left to their own devices.» (Wampfler 2017)

BYOD Pitfalls

• Device as distraction 1: What are the learners doing during a teacher input?

• Device as distraction 2: What exactly are the learners doing during a practice phase?

• Device as interaction killer: Instead of talking about the questions in pairs and jotting down notes on theworksheet the learners write down the answers in silent individual work.

Pricinciple 2 of 3 are digital –digital worksheets

+ «I have forgotten my handout» does not happen any more

+ missing students can obtain materialsthemselves

+ students appreciate the tidiness in their device

+ preparation for studies / work environment(working with pdf-documents)

+ pdf completion by pen without loss of time

+ pdf completion with notes allows redoing theworksheet

- pdf completion by keyboard can be awkward

- students have to be introduced

- Technology can break down
