ENGLISH DEPARTMENT SYLLABUS 1. DESCRIPTION AND JUSTIFICATION English Level VIII is a requirement in the curriculum of the university degrees. This is an eight-week course designed to provide ESL (English as a Second Language) Students with exposure to the target Language based on the levels from CEFR, Target Level: B1+. ESL Learners move toward using English as a First Language in an academic setting and to adopt a more formal lexicon than that of colloquialism and communicatively-exclusive Language approaches. 2. OBJECT OF STUDY The discipline is conceived with the aim of developing a level of oral and written communication and of listening and reading comprehension in the English language. 3. OBJECTIVE Level VII combines knowledge and abilities to hone the necessary skills and build up confidence in students through Essays, general academic and business documents, cultural and cognitive enhancing readings, challenging grammatical exercises, and critical thinking-related activities. Homework will aim to enhance student’s skills and provide exposure-time to the target Language. Formative Assessments will measure the progress and learning outcomes per competence focusing on the following: Reading Comprehension, Written Production, Listening Comprehension, Spoken Production along with a Syntactical and Semantical approach to Grammar. All Student performance is measured through Analytical and Holistic Rubrics. Guide Students through the acquisition of a set for skills that will prove beneficial for the profession of their choosing. 6. METHODS, MEANS, FORM AND EVALUATION

Methods The teaching problem is assumed as it favors the construction of learning from a scientific perspective and integrates theory and practice. In this way, the professional masters what he/she learns, how he/she learns it and what he/she learns it for, fostering a conscious and lasting learning. Means Board, markers, computer, textbooks, workbooks, Atrium, CD-ROMs, Software. Form

Formal Assessment, lectures. Evaluation Evaluation as a component of learning is the main way of feedback of careers and study programs. It is characterized by its gradualness, integrality and systematicity which contributes to the pertinent and permanent formation of the students. All Assignments are compulsory; only Academic performance is subject to penalties. All Assessments, Formative or Summative will be grade based on Integrated, Holistic and Analytical Weighed Rubrics created for that purpose. Four Rubrics measuring ALL Four Language Skills will be given to students from day one of the Course. On-line workbook activities consist of 6 units per course which will be graded 5 points each. Each of which will bear all 4 Language Skills activities. Summative Assessments (Midterm and Final Exams) will have 4 sections, each section assessing each Language Skill at CEFR Level – B1+ Minimum passing Grade is 70/100

All exams will follow the Schedule set by Dean Faculty or Head of Department. No early or late examination will be given without express authorization form the Head of English Department or Faculty Dean through Faculty Academic Council. The Remedial Exam will be used for this case. ECOTEC University Bylaw will be binding. Grade Breakdown
