Back in the very hot, very steamy south of Florida! Making the transition a little more diffi- cult this year were the 70 o balmy days of glorious color that we experienced the entire week before we left upstate New York. Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t men- tion that the day after we left, there was a dusting of snow on the ground and the temperature had plummeted by 35- 40 degrees! So, I’m back, having hit the ground running. With the Ramblings deadline quickly approaching, I had to make sure that I got all the pieces of the puzzle together. Also, I needed to continue writing the show I will put on with the After 6 Club Thespians. And I had to complete the work on the newsletter I write for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Volunteers. Phew! No wonder I am tired! But why am I telling all of you this? Because some of you have been retired too long. You have gone from be- ing the “movers and shakers” to the “sit in our house and do nothing” crowd. Or even worse, you have joined that small but noisy group of “complainers without solu- tions to suggest” group. Of course, it is your prerogative. But what makes a community viable and desirable is the amount of work put in to make it continually appealing. This cannot be done successfully by just a few people. It requires more of us to get off our duffs and do something to make it so. One way is to have your voice heard when decisions are being made. And where can that happen? At monthly board meetings and general association meetings. I have said this time and again, if you cannot get there on your own, there are people in this community who will drive you to and from meetings. Call Iris Pavey or me to ar- range a pickup. Let us hear from you. Well, I’m back. And if the truth be told, I’m glad to be here. Hello to all my Delray Villas neighbors and friends. I look forward to seeing you at meetings, club meetings and activities or just around the community. I look for- ward to a wonderful and fulfilling winter season and I wish the same for you. Linda Our community is always busy. Now people are getting ready for Thanksgiving right around the corner. We may not change colors down here, but we have just as much patriotism and enthusiasm for that and all holidays as the rest of the country. Here are some reminders to all our residents: Please walk your dog on a leash, and pick up after them. The maintenance men do not have the time to look around before they do their jobs, so please pick up. All homeowners and renters are required to obey the rules and regulations of the HOA, if not the board does have the right to have you remove the animal. Another reminder: garbage must be placed in a can with a cover the evening before pick-up. All bags will be placed at the side of your home if not properly placed. This is not a first warning, but it is the last. If you are not working in your garage, please keep the door closed. There have been cars riding around our neighborhood that appear to be suspicious. Well, I’m back! Back in the very hot, very steamy

south of Florida! Making the transition a little more diffi-cult this year were the 70 o balmy days of glorious color that we experienced the entire week before we left upstate New York. Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t men-

tion that the day after we left, there was a dusting of snow on the ground and the temperature had plummeted by 35-40 degrees! So, I’m back, having hit the ground running. With the

Ramblings deadline quickly approaching, I had to make sure that I got all the pieces of the puzzle together. You have gone from be-ing the “movers and shakers” to the “sit in our house

and do nothing” crowd. Or even worse, you have joined

that small but noisy group of “complainers without solu-

tions to suggest” group. Call Iris Pavey or me to ar-range a pickup. Let us hear from you. Well, I’m back. And if the truth be told, I’m glad to be

here. Hello to all my Delray Villas neighbors and friends. I look forward to seeing you at meetings, club meetings and activities or just around the community. I look for-ward to a wonderful and fulfilling winter season and I wish the same for you. Linda

Our community is always busy. Now people are getting ready for Thanksgiving right around the corner. We may not change colors down here, but we have just as much patriotism and enthusiasm for that and all holidays as the rest of the country. Here are some reminders to all our residents: Please walk your dog on a leash, and pick up after

them.

Keep your car and your home safe.

Our Inspection committee will be going out this month as they do every year checking on our community.

Don’t forget our meetings are on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. On Nov. 24, we are having a SPECIAL MEETING WITH AT@T AT 7:30 PM IN THE “A”

BUILDING TO CONTINUE WITH QUESTIONS ABOUT OUR NEW CABLE AGREEMENT. **This forum is not to discuss personal stations but to get set up with the program. IT IS ALSO MEET THE CAN-DIDATES EVENING FOR BOARD ELECTIONS.

FROM THE MAINTENANCE COMMITTEE

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome back all our Winter Birds and remind them that if you have a problem with Maintenance, please fill out a form and put it in the Mail Box that is in the Rec parking lot. We will not be responsible for any decorations including lights that are at the edge of the grass. They should be at least one foot back in your garden so our grass cutters don’t hit them.

Calling PMA will not answer any complaints; go through our department and it will be handled. If there is an emergency you can call first; if not, fill out the form so we can handle the problem. Main-tenance members are also homeowners and wish not to be disturbed over a weekend. Thanks. BUTCH HERBST

STAY SAFE IN FLORIDA WEATHER

Florida is known for its superb weather. People from around the world flock to our beautiful state to enjoy outdoor actives year-around. It is now Novem-ber and the temperature is still in the upper 80's. Ac-cording to the Red Cross, excessive heat has caused more deaths than all other weather events in this coun-try. Heat can be dangerous! Excessive heat can lead to sunburn, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Just because we will be entering the so called “winter months,” the sun still shines bright in Florida.

To avoid problems, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, especially water, and limit drinks with caf-feine or alcohol. Here are some suggestions for staying safe in the heat:

Heat Cramps: Such as, cramps in the legs or abdo-men - get the person to a cooler place, have him or her rest, lightly stretch the affected muscle and replenish his or her fluids with a half a glass (4 ounces) of cool water every 15 minutes.

Heat Exhaustion: If you or someone else experi-ences cool, moist, pale or flushed skin, heavy sweat-ing, headache, nausea, dizziness and exhaustion - re-move or loosen tight clothing and spray with water or apply cool, wet cloths or towels to skin. If conscious, give small amounts of cool water to drink. Make sure he or she drinks slowly. If the person refuses water, vomits, or begins to lose consciousness, CALL 911.

Heat Stroke is Life Threatening: If the person ex-periences hot, red skin which may be dry or moist, changes in consciousness, vomiting, and high body temperature, CALL 911. Move person to a cooler place. If possible, quickly cool the person's body by immersing him or her up to the neck in cool water. Otherwise, douse or spray the person with cold water, or cover with cold wet towels or bags of ice. THIS MESSAGE IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE DELRAY VILLAS VOLUNTEER CITIZEN OBSERVER PATROL, (C.O.P.) Unit # 16

Captain DiBernardino, from the Sheriff’s of-

fice, stated that members of a burglary ring came south to Delray Beach and were arrested. Panhandling is no longer allowed on medians but is allowed on the side of roads. Lieutenant Jimenez made us aware of the Lost on Foot Project. While Silver Alert is geared to missing persons with Alzheimer's disease driving a car, Lost On Foot is concerned with these people who wander away on foot. Approximately 65 to 70 percent of persons suffering from this illness will wander away at least once. Of those missing more than 72 hours only 20% survive. They seem to be lured to bodies of water such as lakes or ca-nals. This project consists of a family member fill-ing out a profile listing the name, physical descrip-tion, medications, familiar destinations and other information that will help in locating the missing person. Palm Beach County Fire/Rescue will offer Hands Only CPR instruction to any community requesting it. The featured speaker was Verdenia Baker, the new Palm Beach County Administrator. Her de-partment's budget is $4 billion, 25% of which is derived from property taxes. The County Adminis-trator has executive powers to implement the poli-cies and procedures set forth by the Board of County Commissioners. She oversees 6100 county employees in more than 30 departments, divisions and offices. The bond rating is AAA which is achieved by only 66 counties in the United States. Among her challenges is to grow the number of small businesses in our county. Another is to have more affordable homes in Palm Beach County. Currently the average salary in the county is $40,000 to $50,000 annually and the average cost of homes is $300,000. Since the desirable ratio of home to salary, is three times annual salary, the fear is that families will leave our area to find more affordable homes elsewhere. Other areas of concern are that our prison is 30 years old and needs renovation and there is a need for a regional park.

Talk of the Town by BOB TOWNSEND

IRISH PAT STAPLETON

n a legendary night in November of 1982, a couple thousand specta-

tors braved wind-chilled temperatures to sit outdoors at Battis Field in Middleboro, Massachusetts, to see me. Actually, that’s kind of misleading. They not only came to see me, but they also came to see Irish Pat Stapleton, former heavy-weight prize fighting champion of Ireland and the British Isles. What the throngs of people yearned to witness was Irish Pat beating the devil out of me. This was back in the days when I was writing a general-interest column on the editorial page of The Brockton Enterprise. I wrote a column trash-ing the lovely farming community of Middleboro, a little town in The Enterprise’s circulation area. “In Middleboro,” I wrote, “the men are uglier, the women are meaner and the children are slower than in any other community this side of the Cape Cod Canal.” The column received a tremendous response, it really did; all negative. Middleboro townspeople cancelled their subscriptions to the newspaper, businesses pulled their advertising and I became Public Enemy Number One in the farmland. I hate to brag, but they had some sort of holiday parade in Middleboro around that time and they dedicated an entire float to me. Members of the Board of Selectmen all dressed like farmers and stood next to an outhouse on the float. The out-house had a sign that read: “Townsend’s Editorial

Room.” The selectmen weren’t alone on the float. They

had a goat on a leash with them. There was an-other sign around the goat’s neck: “Winner of the

Townsend Look-A-like Contest.” It’s a tough thing to admit, but the more I

looked at a picture of that goat, the more I saw a resemblance. And that was even before I had grown a goatee.

It just so happened that I was moving into a differ-ent apartment complex in Brockton at the time. When I arrived to sign the lease, the complex man-ager told me the owner wanted to speak to me and made the manager prom-ise to keep me there until he arrived. “Where’s he coming from?” I asked. “Middleboro,” was the reply. The owner, Hank Barry, informed me that he was president of the Middleboro Little League and he was going to be holding boxing exhibitions as a fundraiser. He said he had a wonderful idea for the main event; Irish Pat Stapleton vs. Bob Townsend. It would be the former champ of Ireland, who now lived in the neighboring town of Lakeville, defend-ing the honor of Middleboro against the poisoned pen of Bob Townsend. This was back when I was young and impulsive, so I, of course, agreed to the fight. To a certain extent, the Middleboro crowd got what they had come to see. In the second round, Stapleton broke three ribs on my left side. Later in the same round, he fractured two on the right. But, I’m totally honored to say, he never knocked me

down. In the fourth round, the referee, who was Hank Barry by the way, stopped the fight and awarded Stapleton a TKO victory. Maybe you’re wondering why I’m telling you

about all of this now. Well, for all of you regular readers of The Ramblings, you may recall that last month I wrote a column that was somewhat less than flattering about the state of Idaho. I want to announce far and wide that under no circumstances will I agree to travel to Idaho to trade punches with anyone who wants to defend the honor of that fine state. I’ve grown older and wiser. Those days are

definitely a thing in my past.

“In November, some birds move away and some birds stay. The air is full of good-byes and well-wishes. The birds who are leaving look very serious. No silly spring chirping now. They have long journeys and must watch where they are going. The staying birds are serious, too, for cold times lie ahead. Hard times. All berries will be treasures.” ― Cynthia Rylant, In November

“In November, the smell of food is differ-

ent. It is an orange smell. A squash and pumpkin smell. It tastes like cinnamon and can fill up a house in the morning, can pull everyone from bed in a fog. Food is better in November than any other time of the year.” ― Cynthia Rylant, In November

“In November, people are good to each

other. They carry pies to each other's homes and talk by crackling woodstoves, sipping mellow cider. They travel very far on a special November day just to share a meal with one another and to give thanks for their many blessings - for the food on their tables and the babies in their arms.” ― Cynthia Rylant, In November

The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd

Everyone is familiar with Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. But how many people know that the major influences on Stowe’s writing

were Sarah Grimke and her younger sister, Ange-lina? Fifteen years before the publication of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the Grimke sisters were publishing abolitionist pamphlets and making speeches that led to them being hated, reviled and exiled from Charleston as the most infamous women in Amer-ica. If they returned to Charleston they would face death. The Grimke sisters grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, children of privilege. Their father was a judge and presided over a large house of children and slaves. The family had a position in society that Sarah’s mother strove to preserve through so-

cial arrangements and marriages of her children to other notable families. Everything was about ap-pearance and, of course, preservation of their social standing. But the names of Sarah and Angelina are not that well known and their lectures and fight for equality for both slaves and women have gone largely unnoticed. That is until Sue Monk Kidd discovered that in 1803, when Sarah turned 11, her parents gave her as a present a 10 year old hand-maid, Hetty. Sarah taught Hetty to read, resulting in a beating so severe that Hetty died of an ‘unspecified disease’ shortly after. So, Kidd

brought Hetty back to life as “Handful” in her book

and began interweaving the story of Sarah and An-gelina with the story of Handful and her mother and the tale from Africa that at some time in the future the slaves would sprout wings and these wings would carry them away from their bondage. The stage is set in Charleston, where, of course, the Civil War began with the firing on Ft. Sumter. But years before that, Sarah Grimke was struggling with her feelings about slavery, and her attempts to set her handmaid free were met with anger and scorn by her family. This act also lost her favor with her father, who had been encouraging her in-tellectual growth while making clear to her that as a woman, she would not be allowed to become a law-yer. That was the future for her brother. Her con-

tinued friendship with Handful was marked by both respect and resentment. Yet Sarah continued to struggle to find an outlet for her convictions about slavery and women’s rights. She was allowed to

undertake the education of her youngest sister. Both began attending and learning about the Quaker religion, seeing in the Quakers others who abhor slavery. Only later did the Grimke parents realize that Angelina shared her sister’s views.

Their outspoken opinion in the bigoted South re-sulted in them taking the full force of the fury of those who could not abide hearing that equality should be had by all. The author alternates the chapters in the book, speaking first in Sarah’s voice and then in Hand-

ful’s voice. We experience the pain of Handful

when her mother is sold away for her rebellious acts. Sarah sadly leaves Handful behind as she leaves for Philadelphia to join her sister and be-come a Quaker. But she sees the inequality of the treatment of women in the Quaker sect and she spurns the offer of marriage by a widower when she realizes that in the role of wife she will be sub-jected to the will of her husband. Meanwhile, Handful toils on, in the bonds of slavery. The book takes Sarah and Handful from girlhood through middle age. Although both are imprisoned by soci-ety’s rules, their pain and suffering cannot be

equated. Both long to be set free - Sarah from the bonds of patriarchy and Handful from the inhuman bonds of slavery. Kidd is a masterful story teller and writes with smooth and graceful prose, immersing the reader in the lives of these women as they struggle to navi-gate religion, family drama, slave revolts and the Abolitionist movement. By trading off chapters, the reader follows the sisters and Handful over the dec-ades and ultimately, Sarah returns surreptitiously to Charleston to try and free her former handmaid. In one courageous moment Sarah’s mother, who has

been the quintessential Southern woman, takes a stand against a deputy who comes to her door to arrest her daughter, a wanted woman in Charleston due to her incendiary views. It should be noted that The Grimke family home still stands in Charleston and with the publication of this book, more people will now know the for-gotten history of the Grimke sisters and their fight for equality in the South of the 1830s.
