Board of Directors Meeting
Date: Tuesday, February 14, 2017
Time: 7:30 PM
“B” Building
Delray Villas Plat 4/5 homeowners association
From the President Sy Weiss
From the Editor Linda Solomon
It is always nice to see our “winter
birds” back in residence. Shutters are
lifted and it looks like a busy community. However,
we need to remind all our neighbors to keep their
garage doors closed when not working in there to
avoid any unwanted birds or other varmints. Car and
house doors should also be locked for your safety.
We have seen cars and trucks driving through our
streets of people who do not live here.
With that being said, we are asking residents to
keep their lollypop lights on for everyone’s safety. It
is also part of our Rules which we incorporated as of
January 2015. Speaking of which, everyone should
have received their new set of documents by now,
including AMENDED AND RESTATED DECLA-
RATION ARTICLES OF INCORPORATION AND
BYLAWS OF DELRAY VILLAS PLAT 4-5 HOA
INC.
Please remember garbage pickup is Wednesday
and Saturday, PLASTIC BAGS are not acceptable,
please use cans with covers. BOBCATS from the
preserve have been spotted. Let us not feed them.
We have a lot of people walking in the streets for
exercise at night - please be careful of all the traffic
on our main streets. Everyone should be wearing
light clothes or have reflectors on their clothes. You
might even carry a flash light with you.
The next HOA meeting will be the 4th Tuesday in
March. Come out and meet everyone and find out
what’s going on in your Plat. Regular board meet-
ings are the 2nd Tuesday of every month throughout
the year.

Community
Channel 8001
Is up and
running!
Channel 8001 on U-verse (formerly Channel 63
at Comcast) is now available for your perusal.
Are you recuperated from the holidays yet? Do you need
more time to “normalize” your house, your business, your
LIFE? Fret not, you still have another 10 months before Christ-
mas/Chanukah/Kwanzaa come around again! And, in the mean-
time, we can all get ready for spring cleaning - do I hear a
groan out there?
But first — February is the month in which we celebrate the
foundations of this country - we salute all of the presidents with
a special day; we commemorate the history of this nation and
the abolition of slavery throughout the month, claiming it Na-
tional African-American History Month as well as Boy Scout
Month and American Heart Month, that organ that governs our
love and St. Valentine’s Day, ensuring we pay attention to our
health and our social well being, too.
Personally, February is the month I get to celebrate the
birthdays of my dear departed father on the 2nd (Groundhog
Day) and of my dear, Bonnie on the 20th, my very own special
President! And this year, the very last day of this shortest of
months, we all don our purple, green and gold beads and masks
and celebrate the fun time of them all, Mardi Gras. Phew! A
short month with so much going on.
I wish you all a fun-filled month of joyous celebrations and
no sorrow. I wish you rainbows after the rain, ice cream sun-
daes for dessert with no calories and an eternally changing
wardrobe in your size so that you never have to wear the same
outfit twice - unless you want to. Enjoy! Linda

As reported in the January
Ramblings, the Inspection
Committee has been out to
view the homes in our Plat and
make determinations based
upon their findings. One of
the recommendations they
made to the Board was for them to appeal to our con-
stituency concerning our roofs. With time and hurri-
canes, massive winds and rain, some of our roofs have
been neglected. It’s easy to see when a house needs
paint; but, sometimes we forget the house’s top hat, the
roof. Therefore, the Board is strongly suggesting that we
all look up at our roofs as well as the paint on the house
and the windows and clam shell shutters to ensure that
our house is in good repair. Maintaining our homes en-
hances our community and increases its value, some-
thing we all want.
There are several ways roofs can be maintained. You
can purchase the appropriate chemicals on your own and
do it yourself or have your handyperson do it. Or you
can have it done professionally. If you choose the latter,
Carol Michalic (561-270-7211) has the names of some
reliable companies. Give her a call if you have any
questions.

Not All Bastards are from Vienna By Andrea Molesini
One night in the fall of 1917 German
troops turn up on horseback, in trucks and
on motorcycles to take control of a small
Italian town, Refrontolo, and to occupy the
estate of the Spada family. Molesini’s novel
is inspired by his great aunt Maria’s war
time journals, privately published as Diary
of an Invasion. The narrator is Paolo, or-
phaned by the death of his parents, who has
come to reside at the villa Spada. In the
household are two grandparents; Aunt Maria and three ser-
vants, Therese, her daughter Loretta and mysterious Renato.
Grandma is a strong ‘panther of a woman’ who loves mathe-
matics and her weekly enemas. She has enjoyed the company
of one or two paramours and is now frequently visited by the
‘third paramour.’ And her enema bags prove handy when it
comes to hiding valuables. Grandfather is acerbic and anti-
clerical often retreating to his Thinking Den where he is at-
tempting to write a novel. Dona Maria is intelligent and re-
sourceful but also the ‘victim of a haughty manner.’ She loves
horses more than people and in many ways has more in com-
mon with both the German and then the Hungarian majors in
charge of the billeted army. Theresa, the family cook, is loyal
and devoted and able to mange to continue to feed the family

Talk of the Town by BOB TOWNSEND
THE TWILIGHT
ZONE? “There is a fifth dimension be-
yond that which is known to
man. It is a dimension as vast as
space and as timeless as infinity. It is the mid-
dle ground between light and shadow, between science and su-
perstition, and it lies between the pit of men’s fears and the sum-
mit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagina-
tion. It is the area which we call. . .”
o!
No!
No!
This is not The Twilight Zone!
I just wanted to set the mood for the bazaar, supernatural
story that I’m about to tell:
Going back many years ago, my wife, Ronnie, was in the
sixth grade in gym class.
The kids were going to be
square dancing and Ronnie
was paired off with Col-
leen. They were instructed
to take one another’s hand
and Colleen who was
Catholic, refused to take
the hand of Ronnie, who was Jewish, because Ronnie, in Col-
leen’s eyes was a “Christ killer.”
Ronnie burst into tears and both girls were sent to the princi-
pal’s office. The mothers were called in and there was a forced
apology.
Ronnie never forgot the incident. She has recalled it for me in
vivid detail, through the years on several occasions. I could feel
her hurt.
Now, on December 25th, Ronnie received an instant message
on Facebook from the one-and-only former schoolmate who
refused to take her hand all those years ago. It read:
“Happy Hanukkah, I have never forgotten what I said to you
in grade school. Please
forgive me. I was young
and brainwashed by the
Catholic school.” It was
signed, “Love, Colleen.”
To which Ronnie re-
plied: “Omg, Colleen. You
just made me cry. I never
forgot that day either. I tell
a lot of people about it be-
cause it always stuck with
me all these years. And I cannot thank you enough for your mes-
sage. You have no idea how awesome it was to get this from
you. I would love for us to be friends. Merry Christmas and
happy new year.”
And Colleen responded: “I can’t tell you how bad I felt as the
years went by! I am so glad you want to be friends. I am so
happy I reached out to you.”
Then Colleen posted for all the world to
see (or at least that portion of the world who
are her Facebook friends): “When I was in
elementary school, I refused to dance with
(Ronnie) because she was Jewish and the
Jewish people killed my Christ. This was 55
years ago. I have never forgotten what I
said. . . I made a connection today to that
little girl and she had never forgotten nei-
ther. I apologized and she was touched. She extended her
hand and offered to be friends. What a wonderful present of
friendship she gave me.”
I know I told you this wasn’t The Twilight Zone, but, if it
were, this is where Rod Sterling would meander in front of the
camera and say:
“Some people would say this unlikely bonding after 55
years was the result of the convergence of Christmas and the
beginning of Hanukkah on the same day. Some would tell you
that it was produced by the same oil that fueled the Hanukkah
miracle. And still others would say it was the result of the
ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future uniting to pro-
mote unprecedented good will. But all of these theories would
be wrong. These declarations of understanding, sincere re-
morse and true forgiveness are no more than everyday hap-
penings in The Twilight Zone!”

on limited resources. Her daughter, Loretta, is more resentful
and in the end more treacherous. Renato, family steward, is
more mysterious and it is he who draws Paolo into dangerous
involvement with the resistance and its attempts to rescue a
downed British pilot. Then there is Giulia, who has gone from
being the object of a scandal in Vienna to the object of Paolo’s
desires. Paolo romanticizes his involvement with the resistance
as a way to win Giulia and finally to lose his virginity.
The village experiences the atrocities from an occupying
army: women are raped, homes are looted, food is scarce. At
Villa Spada they are spared for awhile what the village experi-
ences but are subject to the degradation imposed on them by an
occupying force. Life in Villa Spada and Refrontolo is a micro-
cosm of what conquering forces inflict on civilians. The family
becomes more drawn into the resistance, devising ways to com-
municate troop movements through the hanging of the laundry.
Maria continues to converse with the officers in order to dis-
tract them from the other activities. As the Germans withdraw
and the Hungarians take over the occupation and the war begins
to go against them things become more dangerous and deadly.
Life goes on in the occupied house and village, But in the vil-
lage soldiers rape and pillage and the only remaining figure of
authority is the village priest, who has only been known for his
noxious breath, but as the story proceeds shows strength and
courage.
There is humor as the family rails against the ‘misbegotten
mangel-wurzel mashers’ occupying the Villa and the country
but also great tension. There is menace lurking beneath Captain
Korpium and Major von Feilitzsch’s thin veneer of charm.
While the most memorable scenes are where life is threatened
or cut short, there are also protracted bouts of pleasure in
Paolo’s blossoming romance with Giulia.
An air of suspense gathers as the Spadas are drawn more
into the resistance, eavesdropping, sending coded signals and
carrying messages. Paolo is sent on a dangerous mission and
the family oversteps the boundary of immunity granted by their
class with fatal consequences Twenty miles away the Battle of
Piave of June 1918 has begun. Here the Italian army, with al-
lied support, is able to halt the enemies’ advance in a victory
that strikes a mortal blow to the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Both Dona Maria and the Major are keenly aware that this war
is destroying the old order and its civilized way of life. The
world will not be the same as it was.
Molesinis’ language is simple and lovely and his story draws
the reader in close to the family. Gripping, harrowing and
touching the novel illustrates the importance of family bonds
and national pride while also revealing that divided loyalty
comes at a price. This is also a coming of age novel as the adult
narrator, Paolo Spada, looks back on the story through the eyes
of his 17 year old self, describing events with just the right mix
of understanding, naiveté and desire for grown up adventure a
boy on the cusp of manhood would have in that situation.
