Annual Meeting & Elections
Date: Tuesday, December 19, 2017
Time: 7:30 PM
“A” Building
Delray Villas plat 4/5, by comparison, is a large cor-poration with an annual budget now exceeding one million dollars. It survives by community Volunteers who work
very hard to run informative business meetings that have a direct impact on its membership. As we approach our Annual Meeting for 2017, we will elect three Directors to serve our Plat for the next three years and one representative to the Recreation Association who will serve for two years. My message theme, there-fore, will be VOLUNTEERISM and the importance it is to both you, your neighbors and the Association. Initially,
I will use myself as an example, not to blow my own whistle but to try to make my point. It was at a former HOA community in Pennsylvania that I learned the impor-tance of being a Volunteer, so when I moved to Plat 4/5 in 2006, I knew I would become involved any way I could. I started by attending every meeting possible. It was at a Rec meeting that I learned two Volunteer homeowners,
who maintained community channel 63, (at the time) ten-dered their resignations. They had volunteered to co-chair this project for a number of years. I told the directors that I would gladly take over this responsibility if they would teach me how. I also made it a point to attend each and every Plat 4/5 BOD meeting to learn first hand what was happening or going to happen in the community. I learned
long ago not to heed rumors spread by people who never attended meetings. And, in 2008, I ran for and was elected to the Board. Because of my prior Board experience as Secretary. I was nominated to this position by my peers, and accepted the office of Secretary gladly. I didn’t have to accept this position, but by doing so, I was volunteering to contribute whatever expertise I had. I have been elected to a Board seat at each general election since then, so I
know many of you appreciate the Volunteer work I per-form. I also knew the importance of getting our informa-tion and happenings out to every full or part-time resident, so I asked my fellow directors if I could create a plat 4/5 website. I had operated the website in my former commu-nity, therefore, I knew the benefits it would have for us. Almost sixteen thousand viewers have visited our site to
date. But, the years have flown by and I needed to give up the website maintenance so I advertised for another Volunteer to replace me, and a man named Alan Shwartz
stepped forward and told me he wanted to Volunteer. The rest is history. Delray Villas Plat 4/5 is fortunate to have owners, who want to help, which is why we are so successful. It has a solid group of Volunteer homeowners working for all of us on committees. And, of course, it has another group of Volunteer homeowners as your Board of Direc-tors. Thanks to your Volunteer budget committee, all of
our owned roads will be paved at no cost to the member-ship. And let’s not forget last year when the Board con-verted our cable system to a better one providing us with more television programs then before. Again, this was at no cost to the membership. I think you can now see the importance of volunteer-
ing; for without Volunteers, the state of Florida would
appoint a management company to take over our commu-nity and maintenance would sky rocket. Come to meet-ings, get to know your neighbors, volunteer. It will be gratifying. Bernie
Just a few words to let everyone know that we are back and happy to be so! After an exhausting trip back culminating with a memorial service for a dear friend in
the Villages followed by a Bar Mitzvah celebration in Atlanta, we are grateful to just be home, unpacked with no where to go for at least a day or two! So now we get right to work getting the next Ram-blings ready for print and an expedient delivery this month after the hurricane wreaked havoc last month. As you can see, Bernie has written this month’s article for the Board. I will be looking for others to take over
this column in future months. If you want to put your bid in to write a column, please contact me as soon as you can. Note: Some items to look for in this newsletter: That’s

Talk of the Town by BOB TOWNSEND
I sat in the studios of WBET in Brockton, owned by The Enterprise, and due to
the wonders of modern tech-nology, I might as well have been sitting in the Memphis studio. I took the calls from angry rednecks, doing their darnedest to skewer and barbecue me o’er the airwaves. Just last month, maybe you’ll recall, I wrote a column here in The Ramblings that was something less than
complimentary about Jerry Lewis. Given my track re-cord, I fully expected to hear from him afterward.
I didn’t. I’m disappointed.
hen I was writing a column for The Brockton Enterprise in Massachu-
setts, I did an interview with a young lady
whose estranged husband kidnapped their son and brought the toddler overseas. Shortly after the column appeared, I received a very long-distance call
from the kidnapper, who happened to be a Green Beret. He told me he was going to look me up and kick my ass when he returned to the States. Being the gentleman that I am, I
never told the Green Beret that, having been a former prize fighter, I was a pretty tough dude myself and, as if that weren’t enough, that I once wrestled a bear. (Not only did I not tell the disgruntled serviceman about my squaring off with the grizzly, but I have yet to describe it for you, too. I will.) I simply told the young lady’s war-rior husband that he could attempt to whip my buttocks if
he wanted. He should do whatever it is that makes him happy. The only reason I’m telling you about this right now is to point out that, as a columnist, you should be pre-pared to hear from people you’re writing about critically or nastily, no matter how remote or unlikely it may seem. I once wrote a particularly poignant column about Boston
fight promoter Sam Silverman. I assumed all along that Sam would read the column. I was prepared for that. Hey, Boston’s only 20 miles north of Brockton; there was no way Sam was going to miss it. What surprised me, though, was receiving a distraught telephone call from Sam’s daughter. Hey, how was I supposed to know Sam even had a daughter, much less that she lived in Brock-ton?
Then there was the time I slammed a city many, many miles from Brockton and I heard from the entire city. That happened when I attended a union convention in Memphis, Tennessee, and returned to Brockton to write a column entitled A Hellhole Called Memphis. It seems a family in Brockton had recently moved to Memphis and when my column appeared; their former neighbors
mailed it to them. The former Brocktonians telephoned a radio talk show host in Memphis and read the column on the air. It got a tremendous reaction and, shortly after-ward, I was invited to appear on the Memphis radio talk show.

The Ministry of Utmost Happiness by Arundhati Roy
In 1997 Arundhati Roy wrote her first novel, The God of Small Things, which won the Booker Prize. It was the first time it was awarded to a nonexpatriate Indian--an Indian who actually lived in India - or to an Indian woman It has been 20 years since her first novel and during that time
she has been writing nonfiction and involving herself in political activism for many causes, both political and en-vironmental. She was even arrested for sedition by the Indian government for her stance on Kashmir. Now comes a sprawling novel that brings both a per-sonal and political message giving new meaning to the idea of the personal being political and vice versa. This idea informs its every sentence but also interrogates that
assumption and its consequences. The novel opens in a cemetery where Anjum, a hijra, has decided to take refuge from the world and live. Hijra is the Indian word for a hermaphrodite but can also mean eunuch, third gender and transgender. In India this word is usually used when referring to men who dress and act as women although biologically male. They constitute a
long recognized subculture in India. They have been sub-jected to persecution but are now edging their way to-ward acceptance. In 1998 India’s first hijra, M.P., took her seat in the state assembly. In subsequent chapters we learn about how Anjum came to be a hijra, starting with her birth to a mother who had long awaited the birth of a son, only to discover that her son had both male and fe-
male anatomy. She prayed, visited temples and hid the truth from her husband for as long as she could but Aftab, the name given to her child, began to exhibit female traits and was bullied and ostracized at school, eventually re-fusing to go. One day as a preadolescent he follows a stunning woman named Bombay Silk to her home and discovers a community of hijras living in Khwabgah, a word that cam mean sleeping quarters, or house or palace
of dreams. Aftab joins the community changing his name to Anjum, foregoing any further relationship with his fa-ther and only occasional visits from his mother. She has found her family with the other members of the house-hold. They wear golden sandals and green satin shalwars’ they paint their nails and sing songs from Bollywood movies. They are fancy, they are fun. But they are the
book’s metaphor for sorrow. One of Anjum’s housemates asks her if she knows why God made hijras and then tells her that it was an experiment, that God decided to create
a living creature that would be incapable of happiness. What the hijras represent in this novel is India itself. The other narrative in the book is the story of Tilo, the
illegitimate child of an Untouchable man and a Syrian Christian woman, an artist, activist and lover of a Kash-miri militant wanted by the government for acts of terror-ism. She and Musa meet at university and become lovers and friends with two other young students. Inevitably their lives intersect at different times. After a government raid on a houseboat where she and Musa are meeting Tilo is rescued by one of their other old friends who marries
her to keep her from being arrested as an accomplice. Later the other friend from their student days rents her a room when she leaves her husband. Tilo learns of the trag-edy in Musa’s life, the killing of his wife and young daughter at their final meeting. She knows she will never see him again. But when she finds an abandoned child in the midst of a festival she honors his memory by giving
that child his child’s name. The central chapters of Tilos’ story focus on the deadly war raged to secure Kashmir to Hindu India rather than Muslim Pakistan. In Kashmir, Musa says, “the living are only dead people, pretending.” Eventually Tilo retreats with the child she has decided to raise into the community in the cemetery built by Anjum. Earlier in her life Anjum also has adopted an abandoned
child and Roy effortlessly captures the love Anjum feels for that child and fully understands Tilo’s love for the child she has found. Neither woman fits into conventional Indian life, but in other ways the mood and mode of their stories and the trajectories of their lives are different. They meet late in the book and if the reader is hunting for a plot that con-nects the two women the hunt is fruitless. However, both
narratives open with a birth, that of Antab, later to become Anjum and that of the abandoned child Tilo claims. An-jum’s divided soul and Tilo’s complicated romantic life seem meant as metaphors for the subcontinent’s own divi-sions over history and religion. Roy weaves the stories of Anjum and Tilo together in the novel’s musical and beau-tifully orchestrated conclusion.
With partition in 1947 Roy writes, “God’s carotid ar-tery burst open on the new border between India and Paki-stan and a million people died of hatred.” The conse-quence of that terrible event form the main story of The Ministry of Utmost Happiness. Alex Clark, in a review for The Guardian states, “The Ministry of Utmost Happiness is a novel of frayed edges,
achronologial [sic] and ambiguous at times. But its recur-ring images of lost and recovered children, individual sac-rifice and self denial and its depiction of the constant bat-tle towards self-assertion in a society still held in thrall to the taxonomy of caste and class, make for a disturbing and memorable return to the land of make believe.”
