So here goes - with a caveat to all of the New Englanders, Midwesterners, Southerners, but especially, Floridians - there is nothing like Christmas season in New York City! It is visceral, attacking all of one’s senses as I will try to describe here. First, the bombardment of one’s visual acuity. If you take a walk down Fifth Avenue, the stores are decked out with Christmas displays. White snow- flakes hang high in the air (there is a giant one that hangs in the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street) as well as humongous red and green ribbons. Sometimes the displays are in blues and whites. And this year, I am sure the clothes in the windows will be plaids - the latest fashion fad (go figure!) Next, there are the aromas com- ing from each corner - roasted chestnuts, caramel pop- corn, even hot dogs and sausages. The air is crisp and if you touch your cheek, it feels cold. But, if you should wander into the right restaurant, they might have a real fireplace with a working wood fire. Do you know the smell of burning wood on a cold day? There is nothing to compare. Oh, and let’s not forget the cacophony of noises all around. Jingling bells from storefront Santas’ dis- plays, Christmas music from the open doors of the de- partment stores, the cheerful noise of holiday shoppers and tourists taking it all in. Then, if you go to the lighted Christmas tree at the skating rink in Rockefeller Center, you have it all. The music of the skaters’ waltzes, the scent of the fir tree, the gorgeous array of lights, the feel of your new plaid wool scarf on your cheek blocking the cold frosty air - all of this while you sip a hot chocolate with little marshmal- lows on top. So, why am I here in hot sunny Delray Beach at Christmas time? Because my love is here….nothing more to be said. So, we look to keep that same spirit alive here in Florida, with holiday parties, decorations, and in our case, a well lit Chanukia. Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Chanukah, Merry Christmas and especially, Happy New Year and world peace for all! Linda I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Board members and their committees for a job well done. The Board, by working to- gether, has accomplished and overcome many obstacles to maintain and keep this community looking as good as it does. Maintenance books will be mailed in early De- cember to all for the coming year, 2016. If someone has a problem with this, please contact Sheila Lane. Payments are due no later than the 10th of January 2016 for the first quarter. We are working very closely with our law firm to stay on top of all home- owners who are delinquent in their maintenance pay- ments and foreclosures. A reminder - meetings for 2016: beginning in January, the Board will meet on the second Tuesday of each month and homeowners’ meetings will be held on the fourth Tuesday of January, March and October. The Annual Meeting will continue to take place on the fourth Tuesday in December. DON’T FORGET TO PICK UP YOUR “WELCOME TO AT&T” PACKAGE AT EACH OF OUR MEETINGS IN DECEMBER. Also, due to the fact that Plat 4/5 is going with AT & T, there will be Wi Fi in the Rec. Center. Other Rec Board information: the “C” Building should be completed by January. I would like to wish all of our residents and their families a very Healthy and Happy New Year! Sy

From the President Sy Weiss

From the Editor I know I am a broken record about this, but I just can’t help it - I grew up in the Northeast and it’s what I

am used to. So here goes - with a caveat to all of the New Englanders, Midwesterners, Southerners, but especially, Floridians - there is nothing like Christmas season in New York City! It is visceral, attacking all of one’s senses as I will try

to describe here. First, the bombardment of one’s visual

acuity. If you take a walk down Fifth Avenue, the stores are decked out with Christmas displays. White snow-flakes hang high in the air (there is a giant one that hangs in the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street) as well as humongous red and green ribbons. Sometimes the displays are in blues and whites. And this year, I am sure the clothes in the windows will be plaids - the latest fashion fad (go figure!) Next, there are the aromas com-ing from each corner - roasted chestnuts, caramel pop-corn, even hot dogs and sausages. The air is crisp and if you touch your cheek, it feels cold. But, if you should wander into the right restaurant, they might have a real fireplace with a working wood fire. Do you know the smell of burning wood on a cold day? There is nothing to compare. Oh, and let’s not forget the cacophony of noises

all around. Jingling bells from storefront Santas’ dis-

plays, Christmas music from the open doors of the de-partment stores, the cheerful noise of holiday shoppers and tourists taking it all in. Then, if you go to the lighted Christmas tree at the skating rink in Rockefeller Center, you have it all. The music of the skaters’ waltzes, the scent of the fir tree, the

gorgeous array of lights, the feel of your new plaid wool scarf on your cheek blocking the cold frosty air - all of this while you sip a hot chocolate with little marshmal-lows on top. So, why am I here in hot sunny Delray Beach at Christmas time? Because my love is here….nothing more

to be said. So, we look to keep that same spirit alive here in Florida, with holiday parties, decorations, and in our case, a well lit Chanukia. Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Chanukah, Merry Christmas and especially, Happy New Year and world peace for all! Linda

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MAINTENANCE

DELRAY VILLAS CITIZEN OBSERVER

PATROL Submitted by Vol. Captain Lloyd Lukens

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

As the year draws to a close most people begin to contemplate “What's my New Year’s Resolutions

going to be this year?” While you inevitably grow

and make changes all through the year, there's something refreshing and definitive about resolv-ing to make changes at the beginning of a year. Let’s look at some of the resolutions we may

make for 2016. Go back to school - Many schools provide

classes to enhance your thinking and life style.

Go on a diet - Talk to your doctor before planning a complete overhaul of your diet and exercise, especially if you have medical con-ditions.

Volunteer - Make a conscious choice to give of yourself for the benefit of others. Volun-teering is one of the most effective ways to feel useful and connected to others. As a sug-gestion: Join the DELRAY VILLAS C.O.P's Call Lloyd Lukens 561-496-6636 or Lynn Goldstein 561-381-013. Or join any other clubs in Delray Villas.

HAVE SAFE AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS BY DENNIS & CAROL MICHALIC If you “google” yourself for a quick online

search, you may be surprised at the amount of in-formation you will find. Enter spokeo.com or pipl.com and you might find your age, relatives and prior addresses, old news stories or maybe a forgotten MySpace account. You can delete search results about yourself from some info share sites such as Spokeo.com/output and BeenVerified.com/output. Other sites may need you to email a request to remove per-sonal data. Should they refuse to remove information, such as your Social Security number or bank account numbers, ask Google to delete the site from its search results at support/google.com/web search/troubleshooter. If there is an unprofessional posting you can’t

delete, build a website using the free template from a site such as weebly.com or wordpress.com with your first/last name as domain name. Open Linkedin and Twitter accounts, spend a few min-utes each week posting as this will bury old per-sonal information beneath new and more positive entries that will show first in other’s search results.

I would like to take this opportunity to wel-come back all our Snow Birds and remind you that if you have a maintenance issue, please fill out a form and put it in the Maintenance mail box that is in the Rec parking lot. We will not be responsible for any decorations, including lights that are at the edge of the grass. All decorations should be at least one foot back in your garden so that our grass cutters don’t hit

them. Butch Herbst

Talk of the Town by BOB TOWNSEND

BLENDING IN

had throat cancer a while back that resulted in surgeries on both sides of my neck. As a result, the muscles there were

left stiffer than Dean Martin after a night on the town. I couldn’t turn my head laterally to see a damn thing. In

fact, when I first appeared for therapy after the ordeal, I had such a lack of motion in my neck that my therapist wondered how the heck I could drive. I told her it was no problem. I merely placed a sign on the back of my car that read, CAUTION THIS VEHICLE MAKES ER-RATIC TURNS. I figured that put me on a level playing field with other motorists here. The thing I had a lot of trouble learning was to refrain from signaling when I’m going

to make a turn. Signaling my turns was a habit that was ingrained in me up north. When I arrived here in The Sunshine State I learned very quickly that, while the use of a directional may not be illegal, it certainly is frowned upon. I certainly didn’t have enough motion in my neck to

look around when backing up. You know, when I was parked in a super market lot and was required to back up to get out of a space. I felt very comfortable about that here in Florida. Nobody looks before backing up in a Publix lot. The other thing I had to learn to do here in Florida is to pull out of a side street, cutting off someone on the main drag, and then proceeding at 20 or 25 miles per hour just to piss the other operator off. When I lived in Massachusetts, I used to think that drivers in Boston were crazy. And they were; they were crazy. And then I went to work in New York City and I thought the drivers there were even crazier. Well, I don’t have to tell you about New York City cab driv-

ers. Then I moved here to Florida and I don’t think the

drivers here are crazy at all. They’re just bad. I got my therapy at the Pinecrest Rehabilitation Cen-ter, which you probably know has some sort of connec-tion to the Delray Medical Center. I stopped at a red light on my way to one of the sessions when – get this – an ambulance bumped into my car’s rear end. It did-

n’t hit me very hard, not hard enough to cause any

damage or anything like that. But the driver of the am-bulance jumped out and rushed to my car door, very excited and concerned.

“I’m sorry! Are you all right?” the ambulance driver

asked in panic mode. “I don’t know,” I chided. “Do you want to give me

a lift to the Delray Medical Center? That’s apparently

where we’re both headed anyway.” I kind of wished the ambulance had hit me harder so I was injured. I would have hired the attorneys at Steinger, Iscoe & Greene to file suit. You see, I remembered the ride down to Florida from Massachusetts. My wife, Ronnie and I, were travel-ling on Route 95 and we saw the pic-ture of a woman on a billboard with a quote reading, “Steinger, Iscoe & Greene got me $350,000.” Shortly after that, we switched over to the Florida Turnpike and saw a man on a billboard with the quote, “Steinger, Iscoe and Greene got me $1M.” It was very effective advertising because ever since I’ve been looking for someone I could hire Steinger,

Iscoe and Greene to sue. And it’s not at all about the

money. I wouldn’t care a bit about the money. I’d just

like to see my picture on a highway billboard.

Alliance Happenings Judy La Corte

Captain DiBerardino from Palm Beach Sheriff’s

office, advised that the most important crime last month was burglaries of contents in vehicles. In every case the vehicle had been left unlocked. He stressed the importance of locking valuables in the trunk when going shopping. Fire/Rescue Chief Doug McGlynn reminded us to change the batteries in our smoke detectors and car-bon monoxide detectors when we change our clocks. Carbon Monoxide is a silent, deadly killer. The next speaker was State Attorney David Aronberg. His department is conducting an investiga-tion, separate from the Sheriff's Office investigation, of the October 18 officer involved shooting of Corey Jones. The State Attorney is opposed to students being allowed to carry weapons on college campuses. The focus of the meeting was education. The first speaker on this topic was the principal of Orchard View Elementary School, Mrs. DePuma. She thanked the Delray Alliance for adopting her school and stressed the need for volunteers. About 100 students have au-tism and many students from other countries are struggling to learn English. Please contact her if you have the time to volunteer. County School Board member Karen Brill, told us that most ideas come from retirees. One recent inno-vation was bumper stickers on school buses that ask, "How's My Driving' and lists a phone number to call with concerns or comments. The featured speaker was Palm Beach County Su-perintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Avossa. He began by telling us there is a correlation between poor educa-tion and poverty. He also told us that the annual educa-tion cost per student in the county is $7200 while the annual cost to incarcerate a child ranges from $30,000 to $50,000. Third grade reading levels are used as a barometer to forecast the number of jail cells needed. He stressed that we must find and eradicate poverty and feels that public education is the way to do it. He told us that teachers are asked to teach what parents don't. The topics range from manners to drugs. The Superin-tendent told us that children in Palm Beach County, and many others throughout the United States, have only 180 days of school annually. Children in high achiev-ing countries such as Japan, China and India go to school 200 days or more every year. Dr. Avossa also would like to see more choices for children who for one reason or another will not go to college. He feels we need trade schools teaching welding, plumbing, etc. He

also feels that our most gifted students, the top 25%, are not doing as well as they should. There are not enough advanced courses to stimulate these students. His goal is world class schools. He is spending $500,000 of his $2.3 billion dollar budget to find out where the money is spent. This type of study has never been done in the county and he feels it will be more than paid for by sav-ings. Regarding the problems with bussing that were en-countered at the beginning of the school year, the super-intendent said that it was the worst transportation system he had ever seen. A report will soon be coming out tell-ing what went wrong. The school year began with an on-time delivery percent of 40%. After redoing some routes it is now 97%. A bus aide whose only job was to assure all children got off the bus, but left one on the bus, has been fired and arrested.

Sharon’s Read submitted by SHARON O’HALLORAN

A HISTORY OF LONELINESS By John Boyne

In the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, as

the sexual abuse scandal involving priests in the Catholic Church began to become public knowledge and be investigated by the media and law

enforcement, the extent of the church’s hierarchy in

the cover up, which might have extended all the way to Rome, was the most appalling. The Boston Globe exposed the abuse in Boston in 2001, bat-tling the church in court for secret documents that showed the church had secretly settled over 70 sex-ual abuse claims against its priests. Priests who were reported for their behavior by parishioners were transferred from parish to parish, as if moving them would curb their deviant behavior. In Boston, Cardinal Law was accused of transferring priests within the archdiocese to avoid facing their crimes. Before he could be indicted for this behavior, he was called to Rome, where he was given a position. This decision came from the very top of the Holy order. It has taken decades for the top members of the church to take responsibility and apologize for their protection of their own at the expense of the child victims that they were supposed to protect. This novel is set in Ireland and its protagonist is Father Odran Yates, a priest who examines his life and, slowly through first person narration, takes the reader back and forth in time from 1965 through 2011 as he struggles with the question of whether he was merely naïve or chose to not look and not see what was happening in front of him. Father Yates found a safe place, a library in a private Catholic school, where he was safe and not subject to the day to day dealings of parishioners, and where he could continue his friendship with Tom Cardle, his seminary roommate, who was always

being transferred from parish to parish. Father Yates finds this puzzling but not puzzling enough, even when on one visit he is told by the woman who cooks for his friend that there were things go-ing on that needed to be addressed. But Father Yates did not look into anything; he retreated back to his books, his library and his safe life. By moving back and forth, and not in sequence, the reader learns that Father Yates became a priest because it was his mother’s desire for him. She

had the “calling,” or rather the need to offer to God

her son as a sacrifice after her husband, Odran’s

father, drowned himself and his youngest son in a murder suicide. Odran went along, much as he did at seminary when he roomed with a tortured young man, Tom Cardle. Odran was selected to go to Rome and serve the Pope. It was there that he be-came infatuated with a woman who worked in the café he frequented. The outcome of that propelled him back to Ireland, to look for a place to serve where he would not be tempted and where he did not have to question his own life. As the story unfolds for both Father Yates and the reader, the question of his complicity along with the hierarchy of the church becomes central to his life. What did he know and when did he choose not to know it? As one of the characters says about Ireland, “It was like I went to sleep in

one country and woke up in another.” For Father

Yates this is exemplified by two different experi-ences on the train. Returning from Rome, taking the train in Ireland, he is besieged by people offer-ing him their seat, offering him sandwiches, asking for his blessing. Later on, when the scandal is cen-ter stage, he is on a train where he is treated as a pariah, pushed and shoved by one young man, and called a pedophile. The is a touching, beautifully written book that leaves the reader with many questions about com-plicity and guilt and the ability of a belief system that relies on the infallibility of its leaders which allows ordinary, decent people to become blind to criminal acts. The Catholic Church has lost ground in the most Catholic of countries - Ireland, and in my way of thinking, rightly so.

Editor’s note: It is not the intention of this newsletter’s staff

to demean any religion or beliefs at this most sacred and solemn time of the year. With due respect to the Catholic church and to the many upstanding priests and other mem-bers of the clergy who have always done the right thing, this book points out the foibles of blind trust. This is true of reli-gious orders, the police and many bureaucracies.
