Hello fellow PCA members,

Today I intentionally went through some pictures of last summer's Porsche Club events just to remind myself that we really do have a warm, sunny summer in Manitoba. I'm sure that not everyone agrees, but Winter is getting old already. Just when we get a glimpse of

warm weather (by “warm” I mean -5), it gets followed up by -46 (with windchill) only a day later. Unbelievable? Not really I guess. Regardless, the pictures gave me motivation to push on, take a deep breath, and smile while looking forward to the spring! We recently had our first ever calendar planning meeting at the Porsche Center! Mr. Desgroseilliers, the General Manager of Porsche Center Winnipeg, was very accommodating and his contributions to the PCA have been spectacular! He has some great ideas for joint events with our club, but you will have to stay tuned to find out what they are! That said, I am very excited about some of the events that we already have planned for 2014! It is going to be a very busy year, and we will need volunteers to help Tripat Sandhu, our PCA Social Chair, organize them. Please call or email him if you are able to help in any way! My advice for the day is to stay warm and if you are unable to view your car, look at some pictures to help get you through the rest of our winter!

I look forward to visiting with you at some upcoming events!

Sincerely,

Geoff Reimche

President, Red River PCA

As of March 1, owners of qualifying classic cars will be able to insure them in Manitoba with a special collector plate. The program is open to cars, light trucks and motorcycles that are at least 25 years old, are valued at more than $5,000 ($4,000 for bikes), and are driven only for “Pleasure” use.

The program recognizes that classic cars are generally used for only part of the year and are laid up in storage during the winter months. The premium charged will reflect this part-year road usage, but insurance will also cover the car for fire and theft while it's in storage. While the initial indication from MPI is that collector plates will save owners 45% off their regular annual premium, owners may not see much in the way of real premium savings as most save money already by switching to “layup” coverage for winter. However, MPI touts the convenience of the program in not requiring owners to go to an Autopac agent each year to make the switch to layup. And unlike the current “Antique” program, there are no usage or mileage restrictions attached to the new collector plates, other than the requirement that the car only see Pleasure use. Plus, classic cars will get to run these cool “throwback” yellow plates!

Owners wishing to qualify their cars for collector plates need to complete these steps in order:

• Complete the Collector Vehicle License Plate Application and submit it to MPI.

• Contact the Manitoba Association of Automobile Clubs (MAAC) to arrange an appointment with a MAAC member who can verify the car's classic status and value.

• Present the approved qualification form to your Autopac agent and wait for your yellow plates to arrive in the mail.

Celebrate with us as we welcome the following new members to our exclusive club

Welcome to your Red River Ramblings for March/April 2014!

Note that I said, “your”. That's because, while I'm the new editor of this newsletter, it's really your newsletter, not mine. You are the members of this vibrant club. You are the ones that own the cool cars, have the amazing stories, and bring your enthusiasm for all things Porsche. And the thing

is, everyone else in the club is interested in what you own, what you've done, and what you have to say! So I'd like to challenge you to contribute to the newsletter, whether

it's a piece about what makes your car special, a story about a Porsche experience you had (racing or touring maybe?), or why you can't get enough of this iconic brand. Don't worry too much about spelling or punctuation, either. I'm a real “editor” and I'll work with you to make sure your contribution is the best it can be. We also need great Porsche pictures for our cover so if you want your car to be a star, don't be shy about emailing me your best shots (thanks to Andy Tighe for the cover photo of his 911 Carrera, snapped by Chris R e i c h e r t ) . Yo u c a n e m a i l m e a t

. I look forward to hearing from you.

You may also notice a different “look” to our newsletter. As you know, I've just taken over the editorship from Ray Larrivee and I'd like to thank him once more for the great job he did (and does - he`s also provided invaluable technical assistance in producing this issue) for the club with editing and printing the newsletter. I'm going to try to stretch a bit in terms of the design and layout of the newsletter and I'd love to hear your feedback. Please let me know what you think by email or just approach me at a meeting.

Lastly, the Red River Region continues to grow our relationship with Porsche Centre Winnipeg, who have been terrific supporters of our club. In this vein, starting with the May/June issue, we look forward to welcoming Esther Zacharias, Financial Services Manager/Sales Executive at Porsche Centre Winnipeg, as a regular contributor to the newsletter.

I hope you enjoy the newsletter. And don't worry, with the Winter we've had, Spring must be almost here!

Talk about the ultimate “barn find”! Earlier this year, the very first Porsche-designed motor vehicle was rediscovered in an Austrian warehouse, where it had sat for over 110 years.

The Egger-Lohner C.2 Phaeton was designed by 22-year-old Ferdinand Porsche and built by the Lohner firm in 1898. The 3,000lb. vehicle was powered by a 287lb. electric motor producing 3hp (!). The driver regulated the vehicle's speed via a 12-speed control unit. The car had a top speed of 21mph and a range of almost 50 miles from its 1,000lb. battery pack. The Egger-Lohner C.2 discovered in the warehouse is believed to be one of four produced - each component being stamped with “P1”, standing of course for “Porsche Number One”.

P1 made its debut in September 1899 at the international motor vehicle exhibition in Berlin. Subsequently, a 24-mile all-electric vehicle race over a distance of 24 miles took place there. The Egger-Lohner won the race at a trot, with Porsche himself and three passengers crossing the finish line 18 minutes ahead of the second-place car - notably, more than half the field failed to finish. And not only was P1

fast and reliable, it was also efficient - Porsche's entry having used less energy than any other finisher.

Three years later, in 1902, the car was stashed in the warehouse where it was recently discovered. In unrestored original condition, it's currently on display at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen.

Of course, it's notable that “everything old is new again” with the fantastic new Porsche 918 Spyder sharing the P1's electric drive system. Even with the intervening 115 years of technological development, Porsche claims a range of only 20 miles for the 918 running on electric power only - that's almost 30 miles less than the P1 managed in 1899. Of course, the 918's electric top speed of 93mph handily eclipses the older car's, and certainly the P1 would be no match for the 918 around the Nurburgring ;-)

Man Reunited With Porsche As Surprise Retirement Gift

Have you ever regretted selling a Porsche? Pembrokeshire businessman Dave Amos (65) certainly did, having sold his silver 911 SC for £8,500 in order to finance his business startup 25 years ago. The business later became a success, and recently Amos announced his retirement.

Mr. Amos' business partner, Bill Duke (63), knew that he had to find the perfect retirement gift as a way of saying thank you. Without telling Dave, Bill flew from Texas where he lives, and began the job of tracking down the Porsche. With a couple good leads, it only took him about a week to find the car in Kent.

After finding the car, Bill made the owner an incredible offer, and later drove off with the car. During Dave's combination birthday and retirement party, Bill turned up to wish him well. As the party was winding down, Bill took the guest of honor outside where the Porsche was waiting in the driveway.

Dave Amos -

"It was just one of those amazing moments - I could see a Porsche and thought one of my family had arrived in it. Then I thought: 'It looks a bit like my old one' - but even then I didn't realize what was going on. But I saw the registration number and realized it was my old car.

I couldn't believe it when Bill handed me the keys - the last time I saw it was over 25 years ago."

The friends and business partners met when they were working together in Bahrain. They were tasked with inspecting gas storage tanks for cracks, and required to use inadequate scanning equipment. Once back in Texas, they designed a "better mousetrap". Without the capital to put the product of their designs into production, Dave reluctantly sold his beloved Porsche.

Dave Amos -

"Bill had four young children so it was a struggle for him and I didn't have any capital. But I did have the Porsche back home in Wales so I reluctantly decided to sell it. We used the cash from the car to build our first scanning machine and we never looked back from there. It was my pride and joy, I'd always wanted one but I had to do the sensible thing and sell it. I often wondered what happened to it - it was a bit special.

"Apparently the owner didn't want to sell - he'd spent a lot of money on the car bringing it up to tip-top condition. But Bill made him an offer he couldn't refuse. I think he felt he owed me for the sacrifice I had made 30 years ago and the Porsche was payback. But I never saw it that way - he's like a brother to me. He owed me nothing."

Bill Duke -

"It took a while but with the help of Dave's wife Sandra and his nephew Richard we found the Porsche after all those years. The problem was that the owner was in love with it, he had spent a lot of money on the car and didn't want to sell. But I sent him an email explaining the history of the car and what it meant to Dave. I must have touched a nerve because he emailed me back saying he was really moved by the story and he didn't feel as if the car was his any more. So we did a deal.

"Giving it back to Dave was one of the best feelings in my life - and he was gobsmacked as you say... In fact he actually sobbed and he's not an emotional guy. But it was my way of saying thank you for everything he did for me and my family - he is the nicest guy I've ever met."

The event will start at 10:30 am and run right through until 10:30pm. A projection screen will be set up and the Fort Garry Hotel will provide two meals (sandwiches and Pizza) as well as drinks and snacks throughout the entire event! Come and go as you please.

Questions and RSVP's are to be directed to Don Connors at [email protected]

Rick Dobel will be running the 3rd Porsche Owners' Driving School at Gimli Motorsports Park on April 28 and 29. The purpose of the event is to make Porsche owners more familiar with their own vehicles in a safe and controlled environment. The school will focus on the dynamics of your vehicle, car control, driving technique, and overall skill improvement.

The school is not a "racing" event, but rather a driver education event. Participants are not timed and do not race against each other, but rather are encouraged to go at a pace they are individually comfortable with. Participants will use their own car and be supervised and instructed by some of Canada's most accomplished drivers and instructors - all of whom are very familiar with the Porsche marque.

The program will consist of specific exercises to develop skill improvement and vehicle knowledge as well as many laps of the Gimli track. There will be a limit to the number of vehicles and the session will feature 5 instructors who will spend time right next to you in your vehicle, providing tips and knowledge on an individual basis.

Cost of the event is $1500.00 for the 2 days and lodging is available in Gimli at the Lakeview Resort.

If interested please contact Rick at or 204-452-3900 office or 204-955-1074 cell
