Mr David Gardiner College Dean

This morning I received word from Orissa INDIA, that Father Kishore Kujira has been appointed Bishop of Roukela. The men who visited India in the last year would know Father Kujira as he taught scripture in the Seminary at Sason which we visited.

We also visited the village where he came from and helped re-new the church, which the parish has renamed St. Patrick’s. While we were there last year his mother came forward to meet us, she reminded me of bringing Kishore to Gaibira church on the day he was born for Baptism. That’s 56 years ago.

I think all the men who have travelled to India must feel a definite connection with Father Kishore. The best way we can help him is with our prayers.

May God bless his work in the Diocese of Roukela, to help him in all the decisions he will be asked to make.

OPEN DAY Our annual Open Day is scheduled for Tuesday 20 August from 3pm to 6pm. Normal classes will run for the whole day with some time allocated for setup during Period 7. I encourage all students to remain after school to be involved in our Open Day. It is a great opportunity to showcase our facilities, our students, staff, community and the programs that oper-ate across the College. Ads have been placed in the Catholic Leader and the local newspapers and invitations sent to future prospective families. I also encourage all families to circulate the date of Open Day to any family that may be considering enrolling at St Pat-rick’s. Students can be involved in a number of ways during Open Day:- Being a Tour Guide– I particularly encourage Big Brothers and Little Brothers to team up as Tour Guides. All stu-dents can volunteer to escort our visiting families around the College. I will provide tour notes to assist with the tours. Being involved in classroom activities with various Departments. All subjects will be on display and students can help create a rich environment by being present and showing off their work. It would be ideal if students have a project or assignment to work on and hence complete another stage of their assessment. This may be in the workshops, various classrooms, work on their laptops, in the science labs or in the PE area. Performing in one of the Cultural activities—Drama, Theatre Sports, Music Producing apiece of Art work for the Art display. Parents can also be involved by assisting with the P&F BBQ. Can I ask all families to actively support the Open Day. Year 12 Police Recruitment All Year 12 students are invited to a Neighbourhood Watch and Police Recruiting Information Session that the Queens-land Police Service and the State MP for Sandgate Kerry Millard are running at the Sandgate PCYC from 7pm till 8:30pm on Monday the 5th of August. The Qld Police Service Commissioner Ian Stewart and the Assistant Minister for Emergency Services Ted Malone will be presenting on the evening.

RADICAL HOSPITALITY Often, when our students are challenged to think about the concept of expressing their “faith in action”, their minds im-mediately go to the iconic “Paddies Van”. This is a great testa-ment to this mainstay of the St Patrick’s College story – the Paddies Van has well and truly become part of the fabric that is SPC. The Paddies Van is of course more than a van which goes and provides food for the homeless. It is a vehicle through which our students are educated about the dignity and value of every human being. Catholic Education Week last week was a great reminder for us to ask ourselves the question: “Why do we do this stuff? The Paddies Van, Immersions, Servant Lead-ership, Retreats… Is it just because we’re good blokes, or is there more to it than that?” Br Damien Price, whom many of you will know, recently passed this on to me, and I found it highly relevant to this particular discussion…

“It is possible to serve meals in a nursing home, to cook in a

homeless shelter, or read stories to children at an inner city li-brary and never let others into your heart. It is possible to do the good thing and end up feeling satisfied with yourself and even

just a little bit superior. It is possible to do the good thing and not be changed for the better by it. Hospitality includes cooking the

meal, and reading to the kids, but it demands that you let the people you are serving into your heart. Only in opening yourself

wide to another are you transformed by the power of love.

If you are already thinking of ways to be more hospitable, slow down. Do not worry just yet about opening your door; focus on

opening your heart. Do not worry about the time involved or how you can make it happen. Instead, look inside and see if you

can find an empty space where you can let someone in.”

As many of you know, the Paddies Van is funded partly by the College, and partly through the generous donations and sponsorship of various individuals, organisations and businesses. I would like to sincerely thank Parmalat/Pauls Milk for their extremely generous donation of $1610 recently to the Paddies Van – that money will go a long way to providing the much needed hospitality to our Paddies Van regulars. Thank you to Mr Scott Brinkhoff, a St Patrick’s dad for organising this wonderful support. Have a great week.

Mr Chris Campbell AP Curriculum

SUBJECT SELECTION FOR YEAR 11-2014  During August and September, all Year 10 students and their parents will become involved in the very important process of subject selection for Year 11, 2014. This process will include a number of information sharing opportunities, meetings and initiatives. YEAR 10 STUDENT MEETING On Friday 9 August, all Year 10 students will meet in the Waterford Building for the initial subject information meet-ing. All students will be given a “sample bag” containing

various documents which will help to inform your son in making subject selection choices for Year 11.

Information will be provided regarding OP and Non OP pathways as well as tertiary admission.

There is no need for parents to attend this meeting. SENIOR EDUCATION TRAINING (SET) PLAN It is a compulsory requirement in all Queensland schools that all Year 10 students undertaking Years 11 and 12 must complete a Senior Education and Training Plan, or what is commonly referred to as a SET Plan. Students must complete the SET Plan booklet, provid-

ed by the College, where they record information about:

Results in Year 10. Interests and hobbies. Ideas they might have regarding work or study after

school. Possible courses of study which they may consider

enrolling in after Year 12. (Please note this infor-mation must be taken from the QTAC booklets which will be included in the sample bags.)

Subjects the student would like to complete in Year 11.

Mr Ray Celegato, Assistant Principal Staff and Administra-tion, will demonstrate the online subject selection process to the students at the meeting on 9 August and again to par-ents at the Subject Selection Evening on Monday 12 August. Students will be able to access the program between 9 – 23 August. PARENT & STUDENT INFORMATION EVENINGS Monday 13 August the College will be having a Sub-

ject Selection Information Evening to be held in the Waterford Building for parents and students.

The evening will commence at 6.30pm with a session

about the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), followed by a subject selection session at 7.00pm.

Heads of Curriculum and the College Guidance Officer will be available during the evening to answer any questions you may have. It would also be useful if you bring the QTAC Guide, SET Plan Booklet and the Subject Selection Guide that will be distributed to your son. CAREERS EXPO Thursday 15 August a Careers Expo will be held in the Wa-terford Building during periods 3 and 4 (11.10am – 12.40pm). All parents are invited to attend this morning. Representatives from the University of Queensland,

Queensland University of Technology, Australian Catholic University, Brisbane North TAFE, the defence forces, as well as various trade organisations will set up stalls and be available to answer your questions throughout the morning.

Our VET Coordinator (Mr Phil Webb) and Work Place-ment Officer (Ms Barbara Moody) will also be in at-tendance to discuss vocational education options

SUBJECT SELECTION INTERVIEW DAY Friday 23 August we will conduct our Subject Selec-

tion Interview Day. It is a compulsory requirement that every Year 10 student in Queensland who in-tends entering Year 11 must meet with a mentor to finalise their Student Education and Training (SET Plan).

Consequently, all classes for Year 10 will be suspend-ed on 23 August to enable this process. Parents and boys will be notified of an appointment time with their mentor, where subject selection and SET plan-ning may be finalised.

Please note that boys will only need to attend school for their allocated appointment. Students must wear their uniform to the interview.

I look forward to speaking to parents at the Subject Selec-tion Evening on Monday, 12 August. I also hope that you may be able to attend the Careers Expo on Thursday 15 Au-gust YEAR 8 SUBJECT SELECTION Year 8 students will also have a subject selection process on Friday 9 August. Similar to Year 10, we will explain options as well as the online booking process. This will be in period 3 on Friday 9 August. A parent information evening for Year 8 boys will be held on Monday 19 August commencing at 7pm.

Mr Frank Torrisi AP Student Formation

Congratulations to the Year 11 students on the way they conducted themselves at last week’s Dinner Dance. The boys and their partners were well dressed for the event and provided a very calm, happy evening. Their manners were excellent and they really enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate with each other. The Kedron Wavell RSL Club congratulated the young men on their behaviour and the respectful attitude they demonstrated throughout the evening. Well done, men. COMMUNICATION I continue to encourage all parents to openly communicate with their son and their son’s teachers. If there are any concerns please contact the relevant teacher and/or House Dean. The Student Diary is an excellent form of communication and parents should be reading the diary at least every week and ideally every day. Ask your son regularly how school is going for him. Taking an active interest in your son’s day and you will be providing great support for him. If he is claiming that he has completed his homework at school or you witnessed that he never receives homework please email his subject teacher.

PUNCTUALITY The school bell goes at 8.28am and all boys are expected to be present at this time. On occasions, a bus or train may be late but where a boy is repeatedly late without any significant reason, he will be required to make up time after school. If your son is going to be late please write a note in his diary to explain the reason. INTER-HOUSE ATHLETICS All students are expected to attend and participate in the Annual Athletics Carnival on Friday, 16 August. The main aim of the day is to promote participation by all students in all age groups. Events have been organised to enable every student to participate and gain points for his House. Injured students will be allocated a job to help on the day. This is a Special Event Day which means every student absent from school that day is required to have a medical certificate. If this procedure is not followed students will be issued a Saturday detention. Students must wear the full Sports uniform and will go directly to Curlew Park on the day. We ask for your support on this matter.

DEBATING NEWS The 2013 SPC Debating Juggernaut continued this week as our Year 11 teams entered into the fray of Round 2 in the finals competition. Taking opposing views on the highly contentious topic "that we should abolish parole", this saw huge amounts of preparation from both teams to take on this controversial (and very timely) subject! Practice debates were held, points of information were bandied about in training, and our boys took on some excellent wisdom from Business Department guru Jonathan Brough. Wednesday night’s saw mixed results for teams. Sadly, team Brough narrowly went down to Ormiston College, a big congratulations on an outstanding season must go to Louis Emery (who climbed off his sick bed to attend), Johan Baines for being our Rock at 1st and lastly to Sam Huth—El Capitano of the mighty Brough Machine! On the flip side, Hewitt's 11.1 team once again experienced a bittersweet forfeit when their opposition on the negative side failed to show. Any other sport might have taken this as an opportunity to rest on their laurels, but not a debating team - if horse racing is the king of sports, then surely debating is the prince (albeit the one which is not brought out in public often for fear of embarrassing the monarchy). The boys were granted the opportunity to not only present their case to a highly experienced adjudicator for quality feedback, but they were able to get some impromptu short-prep practice in for Round 3 next week. Thank you to Mrs Lorraine O’Sullivan for supporting the team Next week sees SPC debating competing at two venues on short prep topics: 11.1 team will remain at Churchie for an 8.15pm start; 12.1 team will be competing in their maiden debate of the finals round at Brisbane State High School at 8.15pm. Support would be greatly appreciated - you are guaranteed an interesting, lively and engaging evening out.

CIC Tennis Round 1 v Brisbane Boys College

AIC Tennis No Tennis this Round All player s encouraged to support the Cross Country Runners at Limestone Park this Saturday .

Last Monday night saw the best display of AFL football at SPC this year. We played against Iona College at Sandgate Hawks. Traditionally SPC always plays AFL against Iona at Iona, but this year things changed and we got to play them on our home ground at Sandgate. It was also the first time in five years where no player required an ambulance trip to the hospital because of on-field injuries. In fact the first aid people were not required at any of the three SPC games.

The SPC Under 14 team went into their game as the under-dogs, narrowly losing both previous games, whilst Iona had convincingly won both previous games. Our boys relished the under-dog status and quickly set about proving they could beat the best. By the third quarter SPC were winning by 24 points to 13. This was an impressive feat seeing that most of the cross-country runners for the Under 14 team were unavailable to play football before the cross country championships this Saturday at Limestone Park. Man of the match for the night was Josh Markby who dominated the center of the field. Other outstanding players included Matt Munday (sensational as ruck), Zac Hogan, Jacob Vines, Lachlan Connors and Aaron Macko. The forwards were admirable led by Harrison Burgess and Jake O’Halloran. Whilst George Huxtable and co ensured that our goals were protected against all attacks for the opposition. Special mention must go to Callum Thompson who captained the team this year. Callum played in the center and like a good general, led by example and assisted team-mates on and off the field.

The Under 16 team of 34 boys also rested 8 players in preparation for the Cross Country Championships. These boys being true team players all turned up to the game to not only support their team-mates but also carry water and run messages for the team. Many expected this to be a good game of football and as it turned out, the game was our best for the season. SPC kicked the first goal and stayed in front on the scoreboard until late in the last quarter when Iona managed to score two successive goals to lead by two points with sixty seconds left on

the clock. From the final bounce Hayden Connell quickly moved the ball to Sean McArdle then to Jack Munkara who handballed to Adam Tipungwuti. Adam managed to run half the length of the field around numerous Iona players before kicking to Pat Keating who scored the winning goal. Other standout players included Jimmy Kairu, who controlled our defensive backs and Sam Farrell who kicked numerous goals. Jack Munkara in his first term at the College was named SPC Captain of AFL.

Special thanks to the outstanding support of Mr Aaron Kerr (Under 14 coach), Mr Blair Drabble (team runner and mentor), Tom Lahey and Hamish Thompson (co-captains of Quane House who have been my assistant coaches for the Under 16 team) and the many players, siblings and parents who supported both SPC AFL teams this season. A big thank-you also to our home club, the Sandgate Hawks who have permitted SPC to train and use their facilities as our home ground. It is very reassuring to have the support of the local AFL club.

Next week the Under 14 team were to play against St Edmund’s College at Sandgate Hawks whilst the Under 16 team was to play against Villanova College also at Sandgate. Both opposing Colleges have forfeited the games to SPC. As we finished 3rd in our draw we cannot play finals football and therefore regrettably the AFL AIC season of football at St Patrick’s College is over for 2014.

Events your son may compete in: 100m – open to everyone 200m – open to everyone Hurdles – limited to 10 competitors per age group 800m – open to everyone 1500m – open to everyone Long Jump – restricted to 3 competitors per age group (SPC will nominate these) Shot Put – restricted to 3 competitors per age group (SPC will nominate these) High Jump – restricted to 3 competitors per age group (SPC will nominate these)

800 METRE & HURDLES EVENTS These will start at 9.00am and will run concurrently with other field events. We will start at 9.00am with each age group will be called out as another has finishes. Boys will be asked to leave their field event and then return. We will be working on each 800m/Hurdles age group taking no more than 30 minutes. FIELD EVENTS It would be advantageous if schools only bring THREE competitors for field events. Due to time restrictions, all field event competitors will have THREE ONLY attempts. The High Jump competition will stop after 40 minutes regardless of the number of competitors still remaining. NB: The St Patrick’s College nominated athletes for Long Jump, High Jump and Shot Put will be told at Morning Tea Team Meeting on Friday as well as the names will be placed on the Sports Notice Boards around the College after Morning Tea on Friday. What Do The Athletes Wear To The CIC Meets? All St Patrick’s College Athletes must be dressed in identifiable College apparel. The athletes may wear: SPC Athletics Singlet, PE Shorts or Athletics Shorts, College Hat and College Track Top (if required) SPC Athletics Yellow T-Shirt, PE Shorts or Athletics Shorts and College Hat and College Track Top (if required)

ALL ATHLETES MUST WEAR SHOES (Running spikes are permitted if desired)

CANTEEN UPDATES As we are well into the new term I would just like to tidy up a few matters from last term, Back to Shorncliffe day in the Canteen precinct was the biggest day ever in the history of the school, many hands made it a great day and I would like to thank all involved. The new seating has arrived and been installed around the canteen area and in the hut on Grundy Oval, I am sure the new seating will get many years of great use. With CIC Basketball upon us we are well underway with the canteen at the Callan Centre, if you can assist at anytime in the canteen I am sure Amanda Stringfellow would appreciate the help. The canteen helpers raffle winner Back to Shorncliffe day raffle winner was Kerry Johannessen congratulations Kerry.

TOUR FUND RAISING The U15 Melbourne Volleyball tour boys ran the last of the raffles at Curlew on Back to Shorncliffe day and it was a great success. Good work boys

COORDINATORS WANTED Functions Coordinator Sport support is looking for a person or persons that would be interested in organising a number of functions/events throughout the year, if you would like to get involved please email [email protected] to discuss further. As the year moves on the Sport Support Group has a number of hard working Committee members leaving us as their time at St Patrick College is coming to an end, we will be looking for new people with new ideas, new enthusiasm and a new outlook on ways we can assist the young men of St Patrick’s. If this is something you have thought about and haven’t followed through on in the past please consider taking up an active role in the Sport Support Group in the coming year.
