Dear Members of the St Patrick’s College Community, There was a buzz around Limestone Park last Saturday. An air of nervous anticipation could be sensed as athletes from all the AIC schools eagerly awaited the start of the first race. St. Patrick’s College had prepared well but were cautious about the hard work done by the other Colleges. The St. Patrick’s College support crew (aka Paddies Battalion) were out in full force and were ably supported by many students, staff, parents and a healthy contingent of Old Boys. CROSS COUNTRY I have been proud to be a part of the community this week as we have celebrated the AIC Cross Country Championship and second place in the State Theatre Sports. Achieving high results is a nice bonus but for me the strong sense of spirit, team focus and enjoyment shone through so brightly. The coaches involved across the teams have obviously worked so well in instilling such great attributes in the young men representing their College. Mr Paul Toohey’s speech at this week’s Assembly reminded me of Brother Price’s speech at last year’s 60 Year Celebration dinner. Both men raised the concept that our community is full of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Our coaches and team members have achieved extraordinary results through dedication and application. Well done to everyone involved. ATHLETICS CARNIVAL The Inter-House Track and Field Carnival will be held next Friday at Curlew Park. The program is listed below. All parents are welcome to join us for the carnival. We also can use any extra help with the 100m and 200m races if parents are available. A limited tuckshop will be available at Curlew for the carnival. OPEN DAY

Open Day will be held on Tuesday 20 August from 3pm to 6pm. All students are encouraged to be involved on this day as we showcase our College. Students who would like to be tour guides can see Mrs Donaldson in the Curriculum Office. I will give these students a run through of the order of the College tour and tour notes for the day. Students and parents are invited to view displays of classroom work and displays in the sporting and cultural areas. For information regarding Open Day please call Mrs Donaldson on 3631 9039.

NATIONAL VOCATIONS AWARENESS WEEK National Vocations Awareness Week (NVAW) provides an opportunity for all Australian dioceses, parishes, schools, religious communities, youth and campus ministers, and other Catholic organisations, to focus at the same time on the 'call to holiness' (i.e. the Christian Vocation) that arises from our Baptism, and thus to further foster a Vocations Culture to the priesthood and religious life across Australia. Prayer: Heavenly Father, through the Holy Spirit, help all our young people to know their vocation in life, and assist them to prepare for it. For your glory, and for the service of your people, call many to be Priests and Religious. Give those whom you call the grace to respond generously and persevere faithfully; we ask this through Christ Our Lord, Amen. Mary, Mother, Joseph Patron of the Church, encourage many vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Amen

ST MARY OF THE CROSS MACKILLOP Today, 8 August, Australia celebrates its 1st Canonised Saint, Mary of the Cross MacKillop, co-patron of the Archdiocese of Brisbane. Remember, God does not allow us to be put on our back but has some special message for the favoured one. Listen carefully, especially in the stillness of the night, and “believe in the whisperings of God to your heart” (St Mary MacKillop). SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION Thursday 15 August is the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, Virgin Mother of God, into Heaven, body and soul, which with Christmas Day is a Holy Day of Obligation for all Catholics. There will be a whole College Mass in the Callan Centre at 9:00 am on that day. PADDIES VAN Paddies Van is helping out the Redcliffe Community Support Garage Bring “n” Buy sale this Sunday from 11-30 am. The sale is on at the CWA building on Redcliffe Parade, Redcliffe. All proceeds will help boost the severely depleted funds of their breakfast club. If you can spare some time to pop in and help cook and serve a few sausages please call Robyn on 3631 9039.

CONDOLENCES It is always sad when the College hears of the passing of one of its own. Mr Kevin Mead was certainly an active member of the St Patrick’s College Community. Father to past students Michael, Christopher and Timothy. In 1971, when Rev .Brother Mooney was Principal of the College, a very active Parents’ and Friends’ Association became concerned that the College was without a swimming pool and as a result of a “brainwave” suggested by certain committee members, a debenture system evolved whereby families purchased $50.00 debentures. Funds raised provided the wherewithal to approach the bank and the pool quickly became a reality. Members of the P & F, Christian Brothers, staff, parents and students rolled up their sleeves and helped construct fences, retaining walls and surrounds but without the invaluable assistance of Mr Kevin Mead, none of this would have eventuated. Kevin willingly and meticulously took on the huge task of overseeing the debenture system, liasing with committee members and the bank, ensuring that families involved received yearly interest payments, and auditing the entire process throughout its entirety. For over forty years students and staff of the College have enjoyed the ascetic beauty of the pool at the College entrance and the benefits of its use largely as a result of Kevin’s unstinting commitment and support for the original concept. His late wife Betty was also heavily involved with the Ladies Committee and its undertakings. Words cannot sufficiently express the value of Kevin’s contribution and we acknowledge it gratefully and with sincere condolences to his family at this time. A funeral will be held for Mr Mead on Friday 9 August at Sacred Heart at 10:30am.

Mr Paul Corfield College Chaplain

Yesterday the Year 6 students did their retreat called the Jesus story this retreat asked the students to explore what Jesus asks of us. As part of this we explored the parable of The Good Samaritan. In this parable Jesus tells the story of a man who is beat-en and robbed and left on the side of the road. A priest and a Levite both walk past him but one man a Samaritan takes the time out to help him. Every day we hope and challenge our students to be like the Samaritan in many different ways through saying hello to someone, taking the time to talk to a student who may see down or even inviting someone into a game of handball . The parable challenges all of us to look around at everyone in or even outside of our community to stretch out our hand in friendship. The question Jesus challenges us with in the story is who was the true neighbor and we must always ask ourselves are we being a true neighbor to those around us. The 40 Hour Famine takes place from the 16 -18 of August and I encourage all students to take part. As we have said in previ-ous years you do not have to give up food you can choose to give up things like technology, mobile phones etc. The idea is sacrifice something we have or even take for granted and live without it for 40 hours. Gain yourself sponsorship and have some fun. It’s always more fun to do this as a group. I encourage people amongst your mates to give it a go. Tutor Groups may want to do this together. The challenge is to walk for 40 hours in the shoes of those who are not as lucky to live in the privileged society in which we live. Can you take the challenge????? Do something real! Join the 40 Hour Famine!!!!! Possible things to sacrifice: Food Social media (This is harder for many to give up than food. Goes to show how privileged we really are. You might

talk with someone face to for a change????) Mobile Phones Technology Use of an arm Furniture Many people always do this as a group and have a big pizza party afterwards. It is always fun to participate as a group and you have someone to share the experience with. Please register at the website:

http://www.worldvision.com.au/40hourfamine.aspx When you register make sure you join the team St Patrick’s College, Shorncliffe. If you are having trouble finding our school make sure you have put the apostrophe in St Patrick’s. To do this register with a group (School/Church/Other). The Join the team option is available at the bottom of your profile page.

Mr Chris Campbell AP Curriculum

The next few weeks are particularly busy and important for our Year 8, 10 and 12 students. On Friday of this week, Year 10 students will commence their subject selection process in periods 1 and 2. Information packs will be distributed to the boys, containing details on available courses for Year 11 and 12, along with the process for online subject selection. Heads of Curriculum will present information regarding Authority Subjects, TAFE Certificate Courses and the structured Workplace Learning pathway. Parents are not required to be in attendance on Friday. There will however, be an information evening for Year 10 boys and parents on Monday 12 August. This will commence at 6:30 pm. Information will be provided about the Queensland Certificate of Education, subject selection choices and the online subject selection process. Heads of Curriculum will be available to answer questions from parents and boys. On Friday 23 August Year 10 classes will be suspended so that students and parents can meet with a mentor to discuss Senior School subject selection. This is a compulsory requirement in Queensland Schools for students wishing to move into Years 11 and 12. At present, interview times are being organised for the “SET Plan” meetings. These times will be sent to you very soon. The College acknowledges that Friday is a work day for most parents. However, we

often talk about a three way partnership between teachers, students and parents. In order to be successful in the running of any process the College requires parental support. To date, the selection of subjects and the choice of an OP or non OP pathway will probably be the most significant decision your son will have had to make. As such the SET Plan meetings are extremely important. This is why the decision has been made to set aside an entire day to run these meetings. We are requesting that at least one parent makes him/herself available at the designated interview time on Friday 23 August. Year 8 students will also receive information on Friday regarding subject selection for Years 9 and 10. This will take place in period 3. Again, parents do not need to attend. An information evening for parents will be held on Monday 19 August commencing at 7pm. Year 12 students, who are sitting for the Queensland Core Skills Test, will complete a two day practice on Monday and Tuesday of next week. Boys will be dismissed by 2pm on Tuesday which will allow sufficient time to prepare for the Senior Formal. Students who are not sitting for the QCS Test are still required to attend school on Monday and Tuesday. An alternate program of study will be organised for the students.

Mr Frank Torrisi AP Student Formation

We are at the halfway point of the term and assessment dates are fast approaching for many students. It is important that we work together to make sure that the boys are working hard both at school and home. A FEW TIPS FOR PARENTS: Check and sign the diary weekly Monitor what assessment is approaching through the

“Connect Portal” Email subject teachers for feedback Balance and prioritise Academic vs social Reduce work hours Regular exercise Boys have uninterrupted sleep Remove “electronic devices” from rooms INTER-HOUSE ATHLETICS All students are expected to attend and participate in the annual Athletics Carnival on Friday, 16 August. The main aim of the day is to promote participation by all students in all age groups. Events have been organised to enable every student to participate and gain points for his House. Injured students will be allocated a job to help on the day. This is a Special Event Day which means every student absent from school that day is required to have a medical certificate. If this procedure is not followed students will be issued a Saturday detention. Students must wear the full sports uniform and will

go directly to Curlew Park on the day. We ask for your support on this matter. WEEK 5: “HAIR WEEK” Hair: This week is hair week which is halfway through the term. I ask that you check your son’s hair and if required, make the necessary arrangements to have their hair cut to meet the College guidelines before the start of next week. I remind all students that their hair needs to be combed in a style that is appropriate for school. We have spoken to a number of boys and have sent letters to parents of those boys who require to have their haircut earlier. The “Josh Dugan or Ben Barba” hairstyle is not part of the Hair and Grooming policy at St Patrick’s College. I ask that you check your sons diary Pages 26-27 for the full Hair and Grooming Guidelines.

Mr Michael Phillips Ryan House

Throughout Term 3, there has already been so much activity going on at House level. We started with the academic results from Semester One finishing a little lower than hoped in 8th place in a tightly contested competition. Earlier in this term Inter-House Debating took place with both the Junior and Senior teams coming up against some tough opposition and another hotly contested competition. The Juniors had success finishing in 4th place while the Seniors narrowly missed out in a few debates to secure 7th. Overall Ryan finished in 5th place which keeps us in the top 5 leading into our last two activities, Athletics and House Choir. Special thanks must go to Nick Wockner (Junior) and Pat Cashman (Senior) who managed the sides and also to all boys who participated well done. Still to come this term is the Inter-House athletics carnival in Week 6 where we look to cement a strong position leading into House Choir. One event has already started this week and that is the long jump. There are promising signs coming from all boys who are gearing up for next Friday. After athletics, House Choir practice will begin with the competition to be going down to the wire for the overall House shield.

Finally, congratulations to all Ryan boys who were a part of the AIC Cross Country team that competed last Saturday. It was a great day and the boys came home successful for the fourth year in a row. A special mention to Ryan 3 member Jordan Johnson, who came 2nd in the Under 16’s race. with unity comes success Daniel Seagrott & Liam Roberts Ryan House Leaders

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC Last week saw our Guitar Ensemble perform at the Einbumpin Festival in Sandgate under their leader, Mr Andre Reginato. It was fantastic to see these boys get up and play for our local community. The majority of these boys are in Year 9 and we in the Music Department are looking forward to seeing the musical adventure they will continue on throughout their time here at St Pat’s. Joining the Year 9s, we had Nic Ollikainen (Year 12) and old boy, Andrew Taylor who is currently working towards an audition for the Queensland Conservatorium.

QUEENSLAND CATHOLIC SCHOOLS MUSIC FESTIVAL Coming up next week we have two special events. Our Junior Concert Band, led by Mr Will are performing at the Qld Catholic College’s Music Festival on Friday. These boys are primarily from Year 5 and some of them have only been learning their instruments this year. Their progress is a testament to Mr Will’s great work and we wish the Junior Concert Band the best of luck and hope they have lots of fun participating in the festival. AMAZING GRACE PROJECT On Thursday the 15th, a collection of boys from across the entire Music Department will participate in what may be our largest collective ensemble as part of the Assumption Mass. This ensemble comprises up to fifty students and staff from Concert Band, Stage Band, String Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Vocal group and Staff Choir and will lead the song, Amazing Grace. We also welcome old boy, Josh Cathcart as our guest conductor for this event! Rehearsal for the Amazing Grace project will take place in Period 7 on Tuesday the 13th in the Callan Centre and prior to mass on Thursday morning, the 15th at 8am sharp! Please bring your music and lyric sheets. All materials are on CONNECT under Student Life>Cultural>Instrumental Program located under the various ensemble pages in the resources folders. Please contact Mr Fischer if you have trouble locating your part. [email protected]

AIC Tennis Pre-Season Trial St Patrick’s College vs St Peter’s Lutheran College

SPLC Venue - UQ Tennis Centre, Blair Drive, St Lucia SPC Venue: Coops Tennis Centre – Beams Road, Carseldine

On Friday last week the St Patrick’s College U16 volleyball team travelled to Toowoomba for the QLD Volleyball Schools Cup. The tournament was run over 3 days, 8 venues, had 16 divisions both boys and girls and over 1600 participants. Our men played in the Year 11 boys division 1. After topping our pool on Friday and Saturday we were guaranteed a position in the top 4. We won our semifinal against BBC on Sunday morning and were finals bound without dropping a set. After an intense grand finals style hitting warm up, the teams took to the court for the opening set. Unfortunately we were unsuccessful going down by 2 points. Our second set however was outstanding. Our opposition had no answer for our 25-14 near ‘perfect set’. The deciding set was hard fought but we went down 15-11. Even though we scored more total points for the game, we were unable to secure the set wins. An outstanding result all the same – a silver medal. I would like to make special mention of the commitment these men have shown to their volleyball over the past couple of years. Away from the AIC competition, these boys have taken

up numerous opportunities to play in the off-season and hone their skills - often coaching themselves in weekly leagues and weekend tournaments. Their commitment to the sport no doubt has contributed to their silver and gold medal successes at both a state and national level. I can safely say that after being on tour with these boys on a number of occasions, these men are always professional, polite and behave in a manner befitting a St Patrick’s College gentleman. Congratulations to the following boys: Lachlan Stringfellow (captain), James Austin, Ethan Aylward, Chris Merrick, Callum Molloy, Ellery Miles, Dylan Strathdee and Morgan Webster.
