A Catholic Boys' School in the Edmund Rice Tradition catering for Years 5 to 12
Dear Members of the St Patrick’s College Community, The last week has been a significant one for the College with the Celebration of Excellence evening and the Year 12 Farewell Assembly. Both events were very meaningful events and allowed members of the St Patrick's College community to acknowledge the students who received awards and to thank and acknowledge the Year 12 students for their contributions to the College over the years. I wish to thank all those who played a role in preparing and coordinating both events. Thankyou and well done. As you would be aware I have taken some leave recently and I wish to publically thank those people who have assumed extra duties in my absence. In particular I wish to thank the College Leadership Team, especially David Gardiner who assumed The Acting Principal role in my absence. Thank you to all who assisted. Over the coming weeks there are a number of events taking place as the school year draws to a conclusion. These include the Year 7 Retreat and Mass, Year 11 Leadership Camp, Year 12 Graduation Mass and Dinner, St Patrick’s College triathlon and the end of term liturgy. I encourage students and parents to embrace these events and to participate where appropriate. As the end of the year is fast approaching there is a temptation to focus on the end and to neglect the importance of the next few weeks. Students in all year levels will have assignments and exams over the next few weeks. It is imperative that they focus on their studies to ensure that their results are reflective of their ability. I often refer to “Finishing Well” and I again reinforce this to all students. It is so important that all students maintain their focus and ensure that they finish the next few weeks well. Finally this week, the College Board and College staff have finalised the budget for 2013. As part of this process the College Board has endorsed the budget and sent the budget to EREA for final approval. Once this approval has been given I will write to all families regarding the fee and levy structure for 2013. The College Board is very aware of the current financial circumstances and has attempted to create a school fee structure that is fair and reasonable as well as ensuring the College can operate in a sound financial position. I will send further information home when available. Have a great week. God Bless
Dr Michael Carroll College Principal

Mr David Gardiner College Dean
Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the Celebration of Excellence last Friday. Over 300 students were on stage dur-ing the evening and it was an emotional night. The major award winners on the evening were:- DUX Michael Wallace, The McGreevey Family Award For Service to the College by a Student - Brayden Teeuwsen, P & F Edmund Rice Community Award -Thomas Lahey, The Certa Bonum Certamen Award For Outstanding Service to the College Community - The Duke Family and David Row, The 60th Anniversary Award - Kath Richardson, The Elliott Fletcher Award - James Ingeri.
After much investigation of many options, our new umbrellas and seating have been placed in the Plaza courtyard. This has been a combined project with funds from the P&F and from the Shore to Gate fundraising. This not only looks spectacular but provides welcome new shaded seating for our students. Thank you to the P&F for their generous support with this new facility for the students.
In preparation for next year we will be collecting all Student Netbooks & Laptop on the below dates. Year 10: Friday 23rd November Year 9: Monday 26th November Year 8: Wednesday 28th November Year 7: Tuesday 27th November Every student in these year levels needs to take time over the next two weeks to ensure their laptop/netbook is free of any graffiti/stickers and is in good condition. Students will be required to return their netbook or laptop along with their case & charger. A general clean is probably required and any significant issues must be reported to the IT Student Support office im-mediately. Families will be billed for any damage that has been caused by a lack of care. Student devices will be distributed back at the beginning of 2013 school term.

Mr Tim Walker Justice & Peace
Our latest edition of Just Us Magazine was published last week. Once again, it is a fine example of the transforma-tional curriculum that is delivered to our students. Inside the issue, students demonstrate higher order thinking skills in providing insightful and discerning solutions to some of the tough issues such as Aboriginal health, human rights and asylum seekers, bullying in schools and more.
I wish to acknowledge the ongoing professionalism St Pat-rick’s College teaching staff show in the writing and deliv-ery of various units of work taught from term to term. Thanks must also go to all of the boys who have contribut-ed to this edition. Any students who have contributed to the magazine should see Mrs Righetti in the Student Office for your copy to take home.
There is a link to the latest Just Us Magazine on the College website at http://www.stpatricks.qld.edu.au/ministry-in-action/justice-and-peace-in-the-curriculum.html
If you would prefer a paper copy, please email Mr. Tim Walker, and I will send one home with your son.
A MESSAGE FROM A YEAR 12 STUDENT My name is Dominic Dougherty and I am currently in year 12 at St. Patrick’s and therefore just about to complete my schooling. Next year I am going ‘on mission’. I am volunteering a year to be a member of the National Evangelization Teams (N.E.T.) which is a peer to peer Catholic Youth Ministry. I shall be part of a Team of young people aged between 18 and 30 years who travel Australia conducting retreats in school and parishes. NET witnesses to the Gospel by sharing the Christian message in fun, engaging and relevant ways. This is done through personal faith sharing, talks, drama, small group discussions, music, prayer and liturgy. I believe this is where God has called me to serve next year. I am excited to be part of such a dynamic ministry that reaches out to thousands of young people inviting them to a personal relationship with Jesus. I know that it will be a year of great challenge, growth and formation for me. To be a part of NET, I am required to raise $5,500 that will go towards my training, a monthly stipend, travel and food costs for the year. I am requesting assistance in raising that amount. I would be grateful if you, the St. Patrick’s Community, would be willing to consider making a donation towards this cost. There will be a tin in the student office with my name on it for those wishing to contribute. Also, if anyone wishes to have more information on other ways of sponsoring me, e.g. monthly donations, attending fund- raising events that shall be happening soon, please contact me on my phone 0411 872 453 or email: [email protected] Finally, I ask for your prayers that I may be a faithful servant to God and to those whom he has called me to serve. Cheers, Dominic Dougherty

In last Monday morning’s Courier Mail, p.10, there were a number of photos of Courier Mail Staff acknowledging their good work. Two photos caught the eye – they were Michael Crutcher, Editor Courier Mail, and Scott Thompson, Editor Sunday Mail, both of whom were taught, excellently well, by Mr Steve Graham at St Patrick’s College, Shorncliffe. Well done all three.
The introduction of the Australian Curriculum has led to a number of changes in the academic program of the College. In order to implement significant adjustments to academic programs, particularly in the areas of Years 5-10, as well as acknowledging the curriculum’s focus in the incorporation of technology, indigenous affairs, our relationship with Asia, plus the ongoing importance of matters of sustainability , a number of new curriculum positions were created. A review of these positions suggests they have been a resounding success. Mr Seers as Curriculum Leader Blended Learning has spent a great deal of time working with both staff and students in order to incorporate technology into our academic program. Mr Allan Clark has worked with Year 5 & 6 teachers, in partic-ular in the areas of literacy and numeracy. Mr Tim Walker has worked as Curriculum Leader Justice and Peace. The fact that the College has recently received accreditation as a United nations Global Peace School is indicative of the work both Mr Walker and others have done.
Next year, some modifications will be made to Curriculum Leader positions which deal with subject areas in Years 7-9. Rather than one person being responsible for maths and Sci-ence and another person being responsible for English and SOSE, these areas will be divided into single disciplines. Hence, four people will look after one subject each. This ad-justment will allow for a more singular focus on these vitally important areas. I have written many times about the Colleges 1 to 1 program. Next year the program will incorporate Years 7-11. More and more our unit design will become technology based. A quick note about the current use of the laptop. Our College Acceptable Use Policy indicates that it is not permissible to install games onto the College laptop. However, a number of boys are doing this. A new problem has arisen. Students are now swapping USB’s of games and installing them These games contain viruses and are now regularly infecting the hard drives of the computers. If your son finds his drive very slow, or can’t open or save files, this is probably why. Many are ending up in IT repair. Could I ask for parent support in challenging your sons on this and ask them to remove all games from the devices.

House Shield Congratulations to Kennedy House for winning the overall House Shield. Their first place in the House Choir was enough for them to gain the Shield for the first time. The competition continues to get closer with four different Houses winning a competition this year. Well done to all the House Deans and the House staff for the motivation they provide to every indi-vidual student in their House.
End of Semester With only three weeks left in the school year for Years 5 to 11, it is extremely important that every student is very clear as to what assessment he has due. Parents can help their son by ensuring they have all the little things correctly done and are aware of their assessment requirements. The main focus for three weeks should clearly be on doing our very best.
Exit Procedures for Years 10 and 11 All students in Year 10 and 11 will be required to complete a form before they have the privilege of Block exams. The form will be required to be signed off by various staff members. Library books by Library Staff, Lockers and Locks, by House Deans, Assessment, by Mr Campbell and incomplete duties/detentions by Mr Torrisi. The form has been developed to make students accountable and serves as a check that your son has completed all his duties at school. Leadership Retreat 166 Year 11 students will spend two days in week 7 at Runa-way Bay Sports Centre preparing for their leadership role in 2013. It is always an interesting exercise to see how the group interact and plan for such an important role in our College. They will also spend the third day as individual Houses this time will be spent developing action plans for their roles as House Seniors for 2013.
Hair We are at the end of week 5 just over half way through the term I ask that you check your son’s hair and if required, make the necessary arrangements to have their hair cut to meet the College guidelines before the start of next week. I remind all students that their hair needs to be combed in a style that is appropriate for school. We have spoken to a number of boys and have sent letters to parents of those boys who re-quire to have their hair cut earlier. Public Transport St Patrick’s is a great school but it can be let down in its public image if the students are poorly behaved on public transport. The College will not tolerate poor behaviour on public transport. Students misbehaving in this area will face a range of consequences as a result of their actions. Exam Block Privileges All students in Years 10 and 11 will commence what is known
as block exams in Week 8 provided they have fulfilled all their exit requirements. This allows boys to stay home when they do not have an exam. This time should be used in a productive way that will assist them to achieve the best possible results. It is definitely not a time to get extra hours at their part time jobs. The library is available for those students who wish to study at school. Some items that need to be reinforced are:
Block Exams is a privilege not a right.
All normal school rules apply. Students must attend school in full school uniform,
even if they are only coming to school for a short period of time. Students are not permitted to leave the school
grounds for any reason during the day if they are at school for the whole day.
Ipods and mobile phone are not permitted to be used on the school grounds. I again thank you for your support in maintaining these standards.

2012 AIC Golf Championships Report
The grey clouds parted to reveal bright blue skies over Nudgee Golf Club on Tuesday 30 October 2012. With the South Course in excellent condition, the stage was set for great golfing in the 2012 AIC Golf Championships. The range of handi-caps across the schools meant that the Balharry Shield was within the reach of any college that could put together the four best net scores. There were a number of strong individual performances, many resulting in some very low gross and nett scores, as well as some tremendous single shots in the special prize categories. Yet when the scores were totalled and scruti-nised, it was Iona College that took home the Balharry Shield for lowest team net aggregate score.
The SPC winners of the special prizes are listed below.
The day also saw the end of an era. Mr Gordon Balharry of St Laurence’s College has supported and convened this event in its many iterations for over twenty years. This year the AIC Executive made the decision to assign the associated colleges the duty of hosting the event on a rotational roster with St Patrick’s College serving as the inaugural host college. Mr Balharry, who was under instructions to “relax and hit ‘em straight”, enjoyed playing in the event for the first time in many years. Mr Balharry was presented with a range of gifts in recognition of his service and commitment to school sport.
The 2012 AIC Golf Championships would not have been possible without the support of the following:
Teachers Union Health – Mr Brett Elder, Mr Kevin Craiggs
Golf World Virginia – Mr Jimmy Clegg, Mr Shane Kelly, Mr Dan Rodgers,
Nudgee Golf Club – Mr Peter Trudgian, Mr Max Mason, Ms Jill Piper, Mr Rick Anderson, Mr John Downs, Associate Pro-fessor Robert Sang (President)
St Patrick’s College – Mr Luke Donatini (Director of Sport), Dr Michael Carroll (Principal)
Associated Independent Colleges (AIC) – Mrs.Kerri Stariha (Executive Officer), Dr Michael Carroll (Chairman) Iona College will host the 2013 AIC Championships and we wish players from all colleges the best of luck in their
golfing pursuits in the New Year.
