Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, The subject selection process is well under way with parent meetings, careers expo and subject talks occurring with the Year 8 and Year 10 students. The selection of subjects is an important part of the student’s educational journey. My thanks to parents, staff and students for their involvement in this process. Next week the College will host its Open Day on Tuesday, 24 August. This is an opportunity for the College to showcase what it does and what it offers. The Open Day is not only for our incoming families, but is also an opportunity for our current parents to see what your sons are doing in their classes. The Open Day will be from 3pm till 6pm and I encourage parents to visit the College during this time. Students will be dismissed at the normal time of 3pm. Running parallel to the Open Day is the Arts Festival and the Battle of the Bands. As with the Open Day, I encourage families to come along and witness the breadth of talent that exists amongst the students at St Patrick’s College. I look forward to seeing many families at the College next week. This Saturday the AIC Basketball and Tennis season begins. St Patrick’s College has entered a record number of teams this year and I am confident that all players will give of their best throughout the season. I wish all players the very best for the upcoming season. I also take this opportunity to congratulate the 2010 Captains of Basketball and Tennis:- Captain of Basketball - Jacob Hansford Captain of Tennis - Benjamin Hows Congratulations to Jacob and Benjamin and good luck for the upcoming season! Over the last few weeks there have been a number of activities including Year 12 Formal, Year 11 Semiformal, Year 12 Drama production, the Art Exhibition, Debating finals, sporting events, Theatresports finals and Optiminds. My thanks to the staff, parents and students involved in these various activities. Well done! Finally this week, the Year 12 students are in the last stages of preparation for the QCS Test on Monday, 31 August, and Tuesday, 1 September. The Inter-House Competition: The Athletics Carnival last Friday was exceptionally well attended and there was an excellent spirit of participation and competitiveness. Congratulations to O’Rourke House on winning the Athletics Carnival. Special thanks must go to our Grounds Staff for a magnificent job of preparing Curlew Park for the carnival. The year level winners were:- Year 5 - O’Rourke; Year 6 - Mooney; Year 7— O’Rourke; Year 8 – Mooney; Year 9 – Kennedy; Year 10- Ryan; Year 11- O’Rourke; Year 12 – Mooney. Overall Places were: 1st – O’Rourke, 2nd- Mooney, 3rd –Ryan, 4th Kennedy, 5th – Coffey, and 6th – Quane. Congratulations to Mr Pashley, Daniel Row, Jacob Hansford, and Caden Samuels, and all the other O’Rourke students and staff on a great performance. A small percentage of students who were absent and failed to provide a medical certificate have received a Saturday detention for their non attendance. Over the past couple of weeks I have received a number of calls from parents regarding their son attending parties and asking whether they should let him attend. I am providing the information below as a guide for parents who are holding a party or if their son is attending a party. I have also included some information on the new laws and penalties for supplying alcohol to minors, and statistics in relation to teenage drinking.

Party Safe Hosting a party at home or at a local venue can be great fun. You’ll want to have a night your guests will remember for all the right reasons. As a host, it is your responsibility to ensure your guests are party safe!

Register the party with the police

Make entrance to the party by invitation only – this will discourage gatecrashers

Make the start and finish time clear on your invitation

It’s your party and you have the right to ask people to leave

Consider using a private security guard for your party. The can assist by politely asking uninvited or unruly people to leave. A guard can check attendees

off a list as they arrive and stop any alcohol being brought into the venue if appropriate.

Let your neighbours know about your party in advance as this may reduce concerns about parking or noise later.

Plan what to do if a guest becomes sick or intoxicated

Encourage parents to collect their children at the end of the party

New Laws – tough penalties for parents It has always been an offence to supply alcohol to minors on licensed premises, but under new laws, adults must provide responsible supervision to minors when supplying alcohol for consumption in private places such as parties or Schoolies.

Penalties are high – get caught providing alcohol to your underage child for consumption in an unsupervised environment and you will face penalties of up to $6000.

Police now have greater powers to seize alcohol that has the potential to cause harm to minors or that is being recklessly provided to minors.

Police can now also confiscate alcohol in cars and public places and dispose of alcohol they reasonably suspect is destined for unsupervised consumption by minors.

Providing alcohol to underage children where there is no responsible supervision is not only dangerous, it is now illegal.

Buying drinks for an underage friend/relative is illegal

If you are an adult (over 18) and you provide alcohol to an underage friend or relative for consumption in an unsupervised private environment it is known as “reckless supply” under the Liquor Act. You face a fine of up to $6000.

If you buy drinks for an underage friend/relative at a licensed venue, you could be taken to court and fined up to $3000 for supplying alcohol to an underage person.

If you buy or provide alcohol to a friend who is underage on licensed premises or in a public place, you can be fined $600

Bar staff serving underage people can also be fined $600 and may face losing their jobs.

The statistics 73% of teenagers (12-17) believe it is easy to get alcohol

67% of teenagers have been assaulted or abused while under the influence of alcohol

39% obtain alcohol from friends or acquaintances

36% obtain alcohol from their parents

33% drink alcohol at friends’ houses or parties

Young people consume alcohol at riskier levels when drinking at parties or a friend’s house.

Approximately 264 young people die each year due to risky drinking behaviour

Mobile Phones: I would like to remind parents of procedures regarding mobile phones at St Patrick’s. Students are allowed mobile phones as we understand the need for communication in many situations. Students can place their phones in the Student Office for safe keeping during the day. Our policy is that if we see a phone during school hours we will take that phone. If there is any concern about the use of a phone we will check the contents of that phone. We encourage every student to use his phone appropriately or risk losing the privilege of having a mobile phone at school.

This Saturday, Australians over the age of eighteen will vote in the federal election. They will make decisions based upon their current context – occupation, where they live, their family situation etcetera – as well as their values and beliefs. They will look at the values and policies espoused by each party and candidate, and make a decision about the future they want for themselves and for Australia. So, how are our own values shaped? And how are we equipped to make informed, educated decisions as we reach young and not-so-young adulthood? Obviously, we gain many of our values and beliefs from our home life and our families. In the past, in a Catholic context, many of our values will also have come from attending masses on Sunday and being a part of a parish community. Increasingly, it is important to be realistic enough to note that a smaller number of Catholics regularly attend mass on Sundays, and this has an impact on the Catholic school of the twenty-first century. While the Catholic school should not, in my opinion, look to replace the experience of “Church” for young people, it certainly does have a role to play in educating young people about the Catholic faith, and the values which we associate with that faith – values such as empathy, compassion, and a thirst for justice and

peace in our local and global communities. At St Patrick’s, we take this area of the education we offer very seriously. Recently, Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) launched a new framework for their schools across Australia: Educating for a Better World for All – a Framework for Educating for Justice and Peace. In that document, EREA notes that we, as a Catholic college in the Edmund Rice tradition, have an obligation to provide an inclusive school community, a program of social action and solidarity, an engaged spirituality, and importantly, a “transformational curriculum”. In other words, while we absolutely believe that our students should depart St Patrick’s at the completion of Year 12 with many options in terms of career and academic pathways as a result of the academically rigorous and holistic education they receive here, we also believe that our students should enter the post-school world with the skills, knowledge and desire to make a positive difference to the world and others within it. To that end, you may have seen the advertisement recently for an exciting new curriculum leadership position at St Patrick’s, beginning in 2011: Curriculum Leader – Justice and Peace. The creation of this role at St Patrick’s places the

College at the cutting edge of this area of education within schools, and we are grateful to EREA for their vision and practical support of the role’s instigation. The person who undertakes the role in 2011 and beyond will be responsible for assessing our current justice and peace themed academic offerings, and exploring areas within our curriculum for development. He/She will work closely with Chris Campbell, Heads of Department and the Identity and Ministry Team in providing learning experiences for our students which transform not only the boys’ minds, but also their global perspective. I look forward to keeping the St Patrick’s community up to date with the exciting developments which lie ahead in this area. On another brief note, I am still looking for a large number of parents to complete the online survey for our upcoming Brisbane Catholic Education RE Visitation process. The survey can be found as a link on the front page of the College website. Please take the time to give us some feedback over the coming day or two – it would be sincerely appreciated. Year 10 Subject Selection:- Many thanks to the large number of parents and boys who attended the subject selection evening on Monday. The interest shown so far in this process has been extremely positive. This Friday, Year 10 students will take part in the SET Planning process. In acknowledging how important this process is, all classes for Year 10 have been suspended for Friday. Interview times with parents, boys and mentors have been sent home. It is important that students attend these appointments. The

interviews will be in the library and all students are to wear full school uniform. Could I ask that all relevant paperwork is completed beforehand and brought to the meeting. By this I refer to the SET Plan booklet and the receipt for the online subject selection. There won’t be enough time to complete this paperwork at the interview, where the objective is to review what has been done beforehand. At the conclusion of the interview the mentor will sign and collect both the SET Plan booklet and the online subject selection receipt.

I look forward to meeting with you on Friday. Year 8 parents and students are reminded that the subject selection process for Year 9 in 2011 has also commenced. An email has been sent home with information about next week’s subject information evening. This will be on Monday evening (23 August) in the Callan Centre commencing at 7pm. As well, I will meet with Year 8 students tomorrow (Friday) to distribute the subject selection booklet. This will give parents an opportunity to review relevant information before Monday evening.

DIRECTOR OF SPORT—LUKE DONATINI

Over the last week I have been privileged to witness some very impressive sporting achievements from students of St Patrick’s College. Monday, 9, and Tuesday, 10 August, saw some of our Year 5, 6 and 7 athletes compete at the Bramble Bay District Athletics Championships. With 11 students selected into the Bramble Bay Team, St Patrick’s College finished off the championship as the 2010 Bramble Bay Boys’ Champions (for the third consecutive year). Earlier this week (Monday, 16 August) both our Under 14 and Under 16 AFL teams competed in the AIC AFL Grand Final for their respective age groups. Our Under 14 team was defeated by Marist College whilst our Under 16 team defeated Iona College and was crowned

as the 2010 AIC AFL Premiers. Congratulations!

On Saturday, 14 August, the St Patrick’s College Tennis Championships took place for all ages at Club Coops, using eight courts, organised by Br Chris Pritchard, Mr Brad Harbottle, Mr Steve Graham and Ms Jenny Lee. There were a large number of partici-pants and some 119 students had taken part while many parents and staff were on hand to assist. The basic format for the day was a set (first to 6 games) with a tie breaker if necessary (first to 7 points). All the earlier rounds to the semis had been played in the two weeks prior to the Finals Day. The Finals results were:

Premiers for 2010

On Monday night in a display of might, strength and skill the Under 16 AFL team were victorious in defeating Iona College 42 to 24 to become the 2010 premiers. As a curtain raiser to the big event, the Under 14 team also played in the final against Marist College Ashgrove. Despite our team playing an exceptional game of football, Ashgrove won the match and took the Under 14 premiership. I would like to thank Mr O’Grady for coaching the 16s and his assistants James Kelly and Jarred Denaro. This dedicated coaching team worked tirelessly to recruit and motivate players, then created a polished football team worthy of greatness. The 16s were undefeated in 2010. James Ives is the captain of the 16s and the College Captain of AFL. At the final James was voted by the AFL umpires and officials as the best and fairest player of the competition. James and Josh Wagner (vice-captain) displayed exceptional football skills and led the team superbly all season. I would also like to thank Mr Kerr (assistant coach Under 14s) and Tyler Ryan for assisting the 14s. This team also achieved success only losing to Ashgrove this season. Tom Lahey and Hamish Thompson shared the captain role and both boys led their team with skill and encouragement. SPC is the only College to compete in all AFL finals in the last two years. No other College has managed to have both a 14s and 16s team in the finals. Thanks to our 16s premiership we have achieved greatness. We aim to achieve more in 2011! Dom Crowley (Director of AFL)

SPC CRICKET 2010/11 Season We are currently looking for interested participants to be involved with coaching in our 2010/11 SPC Cricket Season. Please see below for more information on qualifications and getting involved. Coaching Accreditation: Please note the course outlined below involves both Level 1 Cricket Coach and Level 1 Umpiring Qualifications.

The Level 1 Coaching Course is conducted in two parts. The first part, theory, is done online at the Queensland Cricket website www.qldcricket.com.au

Click on the icon GETTING INVOLVED then scroll down and click on COACHING. Once the page is open, scroll down and click on Level 1 Online Accreditation Course. After the page is open, scroll down and

complete the “Introduction to Cricket Course”. (This part of the course must be done before starting the second part.) Once the online course is complete you will receive a certificate which must be brought to the

practical session.

The second part of the course will be conducted on the date below at the listed venue.

INTERESTED? St Patrick’s Sports Department is looking to qualify willing participants if they commit to being a part of the 2010/11 SPC Cricket Program and coach an age group team. First XV Rugby 2010/2011 It is recommended that all students looking to be a part of the 2010/11 First XV pre season are starting to be involved in the SPC Gym/ Weights Room. Specific strength and conditioning programs are available to all students interested. Pre season will commence in Term 4.
