Dear Members of the St. Patrick's College Community Last week I watched the flood waters at Tuchekoi rise and isolate our Kairos retreat team. Fortunately, the news is all good. The waters receded and we were able to return home. It is hard to believe that it is March already and Term 1 is rapidly drawing to a conclusion. The Year 11 and 12 students commence their examinations next week so it is very important that all students are carrying out their study plans in preparation. This week the CIC and AIC swimming carnivals have taken place. Congratulations to the CIC swimmers on their excellent perfor-mance on Tuesday where they were placed 2nd in the purple division. The AIC carnival was held today and the result is not known as I write but will be reported next week. I do wish to take this opportunity to thank Mr Doug Locke and his team of coaches for all of their hard work with the swimmers. I also congratulate the swimmers on their dedication during the season. Well done, to all involved. This week has also been significant as I met with the executive of Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) and discussed the upcoming changes to the organisation as EREA prepares to accept its PJP status . We will not notice any difference in how we operate at St. Patrick's College. However, this change does mean that the ownership of our school and the other EREA schools across Austral-ia moves from the Christian Brothers to EREA. This PJP status has been many years in preparation and is a significant development for St. Patrick's College and the other EREA schools. In last week's Calling I mentioned the upcoming Shindig. I again remind parents and friends about booking tickets for this event. It will be a great night so book early as tickets are limited. Next week we also celebrate St. Patrick's Day with a Mass followed by the Great Morven Race. The Mass will commence at 9am and parents are very welcome to attend. The Great Morven Race is always a highlight. Last week I mentioned Shore to Gate which will be held on the last day of Term 1. This is an excellent event and a way to raise some valuable funds to support charities and provide equipment for the College. Your son has now received his sponsor card and it would be my expectation that each student works towards raising a minimum of $30. There are some great prizes and incentives for the students including a day at Wet 'n' Wild for all students who raise $100. Please support the College in this venture. This year half of the funds will support some of our charities and half will be devoted to upgrading the sound and lighting equipment in the Callan Centre. We hope to raise $50 000 this year. SHORE TO GATE – Every student has now received his Shore to Gate card and information letters. This is our major fundraiser for the year hence every student is asked to be involved and raise a minimum of $30. Previous years have shown that students who go out and make an effort can achieve this goal, with hundreds raising over the $100 required to have a day out at Wet and Wild. CONNECT TIP OF THE WEEK The new College Intranet – CONNECT – provides a central site for all the students’ elearning needs with the addition of Identity, Pastoral and Administration details for students and parents. Under Student Life, all the sporting and cultural activities are listed with all the relevant information to be included. Some pages are still being completed but the current cricket page is an example of the information families can easily access.

Mr Matthew Hawkins AP Identity

During Lent, we are reminded that Jesus was human – not just the Son of God, but a human being who suffered pain and rejection in the same way we do. Understanding that Jesus was human may sound an easy concept to grasp, and yet it provides as much confusion to people as many other parts of theology. During Mass last Sunday, my daughter Claudia was behaving in a, let’s say “less than reverent” manner at one point. In a parental act of desperation, I decided to go with the strategy of whispering, “You know, God is watching.” Claudia started looking around the church. “Where is He?” she asked. To which, of course, I replied “He’s everywhere!” Claudia was suitably confused as she looked under the pew in front of us. But it reminded me of my recent Kairos Year 12 Retreat experience with thirty-two young men and seven staff. One theme discussed throughout the retreat is that of discovering God, having “God moments”, or seeing the face of Jesus in people we meet or things we experience. It is reminiscent of the story of two men as they walk along the road to Emmaus – finding God in the human experience. I have a strong belief that the more human we become, that is, the closer to real humanity we get, the closer we also find we are to God. So, where do we find this “humanity”? How do we get there? I guess this is different for everyone, but I can give you an example of where I felt it recently. On Friday of last week, Alireza Adibnia, an Iranian refugee, addressed a group of students and staff at the launch of ERA (Edmund Rice Advocacy) for Change, a new student advocacy network involving St Patrick’s and other EREA school students (I wrote recently about ERA for Change in the Calling). Alireza shared his harrowing journey from persecution in Iran, flee-ing to Indonesia, living in hiding there, boarding a boat with about seventy men, women and children for a four day jour-ney with only enough food and water for one day, being picked up by the Australian navy, being locked behind wire in a detention centre with no idea what would happen next, before finally being allowed to enter society, and then some months later, being granted a visa and therefore the right to work or study. Alireza spoke of the conditions in which he lived, both in Iran and in Australian detention centres. All present were moved by his Alireza’s story – a very human story.

Three words we have heard a great deal in relation to the Refugee debate in Australia, and will continue to hear this year, are “STOP THE BOATS”. However, three words Alireza used on Friday seem to me to be far more important, and yet much harder to hear: “WE ARE HUMAN”. On Friday as I lis-tened to Alireza’s story and saw the unified, emotional re-sponse from the students and staff in the room, I felt closer to humanity, and I have to say, it felt like a “God moment” to me. Jesus was indeed human – he was a human who was forced to flee his home; he was persecuted; in fact, like Alireza, Jesus was also a refugee. So, as Catholics, how are we called to respond? Perhaps Mat-thew’s gospel points us in the right direction: “Truly I tell you, just as you looked after one of these, the least of

my brothers and sisters, you looked after me.”

Raymundas Bria India Immersion

In trying to describe my time in India, I could explain our itinerary and nearly four weeks of amazing activities and sights. However, on reflection I think a more effec-tive way of explaining my true experience of India might be by sharing this simple story. The following story how-ever does no justice whatsoever to express exactly how loving and caring some people are towards us. DAY 10 GAIBIRA. After a big community Mass and hearty welcome for us boys and teachers Mr Corfield, Mr Gradwell, Lachlan Rolo-gas, Jake Ryan, Tyler Caruana, and I made our way to Tiljora Village. Our main reason to visit their community was to simply donate money to them so they could finish rebuilding their church roof after it collapsed months prior to our visit to India. A 20 minute drive through the jungle later, we arrived at a quite small church on the side of the road. We briefly met a few people from the community before we danced to the church. We sat at the altar in front of the community like kings, they sang and danced for us like kings, they served us a bit of food and tea like kings, we talked to all of them like we were kings. My God, we were Kings! Whilst sitting in front of everyone, sipping on my tea, I was informed that this community had nothing, nothing at all. They had spent all their money to rebuild their church and they could only afford to fix about half the building. They had nothing yet they still had love and acceptance to serve us four biscuits, two slices of sweet potato and a glass of tea. Giving us food and preparing for their hearty

welcome for us was probably the most that they could do. I didn’t know whether to feel happy because of what they had done for us or guilty because of the fact that they spent their last few dollars on us, strangers. The boys and I met an old lady who was a good friend of Father Liam. Father had actually baptized her son years ago and now he is a professor at Gaibira College and has a doctorate in Theology. She shook our hands one by one each bringing them towards her forehead and making contact. There was something about this lady that just fascinated me. She just seemed like such a great human with a beautiful soul. We then danced out of the church and got in a big photo with the whole community. It was time to say goodbye, but before I did get into the car, I shook that old lady’s hand and gave her my rosary beads. A big smile appeared on her face. She grabbed my hands and bowed to me saying thank you over and over again. As we were driving off we could see her walking down the dusty, bumpy jungle road heading home. We decided to stop to give her a lift home. Four to five kilometres later we ar-rived in her area. An old lady who shouldn’t be walking at all made the effort to walk 4-5 kilometres to meet us. To think of her doing that for us, for strangers, just touches my heart. It is extremely hard to believe what Tiljora village have done for us after what they have been through.

Mr Chris Campbell AP Curriculum

As we move in to the final month of term 1, students should now be preparing for end of term exams. The direction we give , as teachers and parents, when speaking to the boys about these upcoming tests, is that it is time to spend more time studying. But what exactly does the term “study” mean? One of the most basic facts of life is that during and beyond their time at St Patrick’s students will be required to “study” for tests and exams. There are many reasons as to why study is important. The most obvious is that it assists students in achieving better results. It is comforting for students to have a sense of control over their assessment items. The development of a young man’s organisational skills, will go a long way to-wards reducing anxiety. The most effective approach to study is to ensure a continual review of work taught during a topic. In doing so, students must check understanding and ask for clarification as a unit progresses. This will allow for the work to be addressed in manageable chunks. Leaving study to the night before the exam will rarely prove satisfactory, with students tending to feel overwhelmed by the volume of work they find they must cover.

In many schools, there is a culture of waiting for a revision sheet before study can commence. I propose, that instead of waiting for a revision sheet, students should look to write their own. In reviewing the class notes and teacher handouts, ask questions such as “Who? What? Why do you think? What might happen if?” for subjects such as Maths, use index cards where a formula is written on one side, with examples on the other. This can be used to practise understanding basic facts. Rote learning still has a role to play in order to answer the study questions you pose to yourself, students must first know their content. Generally reading and constructing a written summary of what is read, proves to be the most effective means of committing content for memory. If reading and note taking proves tedious, perhaps the infor-mation could be organised through the use of graphic organis-es such as timelines, concept maps, flow charts, swot analyses and so on. Many teachers are using such graphic organisers as part of their unit design. “Study” doesn't happen naturally it is often frustrating and requires discipline and commitment. Students need to discov-er what works best for them, but one thing is for sure, being organised and prepared is essential.

Mr Frank Torrisi AP Student Formation

The first Term of the school year is nearly over. It is im-portant to realize that all students should be spending a considerable amount of time completing assessment and studying for exams at the of the Term. It is important that students are in a routine and free from distraction when they are completing work or studying. The challenge for students is to turn off their Facebook Account. See how much extra time they gain. Some students are caught up in the hype of Social Media and sharing their inner most se-crets with you on Facebook. YEAR 11 AND 12 STUDENT TERM EXIT PROCEDURE On Friday 8 March students in Years 11 and 12 will be in-volved in a Term exit process. The process will involve stu-dents being signed off by the Academic and Pastoral areas of the College. Year 12 students will meet with their House Deans during Period 5 and once they have been processed are able to leave school to commence their block exams. Year 11 student will follow the same process during period 7. If a student has not fulfilled his Academic or Pastoral commitments he will be required to stay at school until all those commitment have been fulfilled during exam block. All students must have their parents/guardians sign the forms. As part of our St Patrick’s Day celebrations on Friday 15 March, we will be holding the annual Great Morven Race. 150 boys will participate in a flying dash around the school property and past the historic Morven House in the centre of the College grounds. The first Green and Gold day will also be held in conjunction with the St Patrick’s Day Cele-brations. It is an expectation that all students in Years 11 and 12 attend school on this day. GREEN AND GOLD DAY will be held on Friday, 15 March. Students are allowed to wear clothes to school that are predominantly green and gold. The aim of the day is to provide students with a chance to wear something differ-ent to school but also to show their pride in their school. Students can wear blue denim shorts or jeans but all other pieces of clothing must be predominately green and/or gold. Closed shoes are compulsory and black school shoes are required for Shop classes. We also ask all stu-dents to bring a gold coin donation. The Shore to Gate Walkathon will be held on the last day of this term– Thursday 28 March. The day will involve a 10km walk/run, and House BBQs to finish the term. It is designed for students and staff to relax and enjoy a day together as well as raising some money for the College. Every student has been given a sponsor card this week for the Shore to Gate. We are asking every student to raise a minimum of $30. Last year the community raised over $50,000 and a similar strong effort by all will benefit the students greatly.

MOBILE PHONES We understand the need for many stu-dents to have a phone, particularly for communication purposes. St Patrick’s has a policy of taking a student’s phone if it is seen or heard during school hours. This aims to minimize the inappropriate use of mobile phones at school. The Mobile phone policy is clearly outlined in the College diary. I encourage all parents to read the policy and to support the College in maintaining a good teaching and learning environment. TERM 2 UNIFORM A reminder that all students are required to wear a college tie from the beginning of Term 2. Also all students in Years 10, 11 & 12 students require long trousers and blazers. These are available now from the uniform shop. BLOCK EXAMS All students in years 11 and 12 receive block exam privileges. Students in these year levels only come to school when they have exams. While at home it is important to utilise this time productively for exam prepa-ration. When attending school for exams it is important grounds of the College then return. IPods and Mobile phone are not permitted to be used on the school grounds. ALL HALLOWS COLLEGE Year 8 and 9 only Friday 8 March. 7.00pm to 10.00pm. Cost 10 The venue is Loretto Hall. Drop off and pick up zones for cars are at the Kemp Place and Dodge Lane entrances. ID is required. Appropri-ate Clothing needs to be worn including footwear. All Nor-mal School Rules apply.

Mr Geoff Samuels Director of Culture

An exciting start to the 2013 Debating season. Year 11 Team 2, now under the passionate tutelage of Mr Brough, have clearly sent out the warning signals early, with their opposition forfeiting prior to game day. Our other Year 11 Team 1 were in formidable Round 1 form, smashing out a comprehensive victory over arch rival St Paul’s in front of a boisterous crowd of spectators. Gerard Denkes, Rhys Bay-liss and Matt Travers were not rattled by the presence of a so many Year 12 supporters, including our College Captain Jacob Johannessen and Vice-Captain Mundy Bria. Star adjudicator Kristen Price acknowledged that the omi-nous presence of Bentley Brown beside her in the audience may well have played a factor in their victory. Both Year 9 teams also debuted last night. The teams are seasoned debaters, with most boys having competed in the

Year 8 competition last year. Michael Doyle, Liam Morgan and Matt Smith (following in the footsteps in his famous 3rd speaker brother Joshua) notched up a solid victory, whilst Team 2 were narrowly defeated. St Patrick’s College breeds fanatical debaters and it was great to see so many staff and old boys now employed by QDU and acting as adjudicators. FINISHING OFF WELL As we enter into Round 5 of CIC Cricket and AIC Volleyball/Cricket, we encourage all students (with the assistance and support of their parents) to finish these seasons well. There are a lot of other distractions which can take the focus off either Cricket or Volleyball and we ask everyone to be mindful of these distractions. Fully finishing a sporting season that you committed to is very important in terms of self-development, discipline and most of all being part of a team. Being a member of a sport-ing team means that others, your team mates and your coach, rely on you and your ability to be there for their (your) team. This includes making it to training sessions and making it to all games be they home or away. With only three rounds of Cricket and Volleyball remaining, we would expect all students who are playing either cricket or volleyball for St Patrick’s College to finish well and be there for their team mates and their College. We also remind all cricketers and volleyball players who have signed up for rugby and football that any on pre- sea-son training for these term 2 sports must not affect their cricket or volleyball. CONGRATULATIONS

Mr Tim Walker Volleyball

Last week was the ‘local derby’ against Padua College. After a shaky start to the day we ended up winning overall. Win-ning performances by 13A, 13C, 14C, 15B, 15A, 16A, 2nds and 1st VI teams were recorded. The Firsts really set the standard on the day notching up a 3-1 win with very few errors considering the tough crowd. Again huge thank you to all of the supporters that joined the Paddies’ Battalion on the day. You certainly encouraged all our teams to fight the good fight. The First VI are looking forward to keeping this standard for the game against Villanova this weekend. The draw for this Saturday’s fixtures can be found below. As St Patrick’s College is hosting, we must also provide people to perform ‘duty’ on our home games (in brackets). Duty requirements are two lines people, and 2 scorers. If you did not stay for duty last week, you will be required to do so this week. Also, TRAINING ON TUESDAY NEXT WEEK HAS BEEN CANCELLED due to both Boondall and the Callan Centre being unavailable. Rosemary Martin at Boondall Sports Centre has also requested that ALL BOYS USE THE CHANGE ROOMS TO GET CHANGED AT BOONDALL. Students must aware of this when in public places.
