Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, Last Saturday, I along with a large number of other members of the St. Patrick’s College Community travelled to Ipswich to witness more AIC history. Our cross country runners had worked very hard this year and Saturday was the culmination of their season. Our XMEN did not let us down as they tracked up and down the hills of Limestone Park. I was extraordinarily proud of the runners, their coaches and the strong crew of students, staff and parents who were at Ipswich on Saturday. At the end of the day St. Patrick’s College was placed first overall with the Under 13, 14 and Opens winning their age groups. It was a very ‘gutsy’ performance and we should all be very proud of our runners. Well done to all involved in Cross Country this year. As we edge our way through this term it is worth noting a few key events that are approaching. The subject selection process for both the Year 8 and Year 10 students has commenced. For both groups of students this is an important decision making time. I encourage parents to attend the various information sessions and utilise the expertise of the staff. Another key event that is not too far away is the OPEN DAY on Tuesday 23 August. Our Open Day is designed for both our incoming families as well as our existing families. It is an excellent opportunity for parents to come along, see the school on display and importantly see their sons at work. I encourage parents to come along. I also ask that you let your friends know about the Open Day so that they can also come along to the College. Details of the Open Day can be found elsewhere in this edition of the Calling. A third significant event is the QCS tests for Year 12 students on 30, 31 August. The students and staff have been preparing for this test throughout the year and it is important that we continue to support the Year 12 students as they journey toward this test and ultimately their completion of Year 12 at St Patrick’s College. I will remind the College Community of the QCS tests closer to the event. This week saw the return of Mr Rob Morris from leave and next week Mr Justin Moro returns. As a result we farewell Mr Paul Schaumberg and thank him for his commitment over the last five weeks. Finally this week, with the arrival of the EKKA we prepare to have next Wednesday off school but return to school on Thursday and Friday. The Interhouse athletics carnival is scheduled for Friday 19 August and is a compulsory day for all students. Have a great week. The College marked Elliott Fletcher’s birthday last Friday with a minutes silence and the College Captain’s laying a wreath at our Remembrance Garden. The day also coincidently saw a number of packets of fruit tingles being handed out randomly. It was the first time I heard of this ‘tradition’ covering 27 years but it too was to remember a St Pat’s boy who had passed away but still is remembered.

Tony Lahey, a St Pat’s Old Boy from 1988, started the ‘Fruit Tingle act’ to remember a classmate of his, Mi-chael Ryan. Michael died of Leukaemia in 1983 whilst in Year 8 at St Pat’s. On a Year 7 camping trip to Tallebudgera on the Gold Coast, Tony watched Michael being force-fed his medication of 12 tablets, 3 times a day, in a tablespoon of syrup. Michael hated those tablets and his face scrunched with every swal-low. As a reward for taking the pills, Michael was given Fruit Tingles. Every year, the first Friday in August is Fruit Tingle Friday, in memory of this great kid and his battle with Leukaemia.

We fondly remember all the old boys of St Patrick’s who have passed away – may they rest in eternal peace.

Inter-House Athletics – All students are expected to attend Curlew Park on Friday 19 August for the Inter-House Athletics carnival. It is designed as a fun day where every student can participate and gain points for their House, regardless of their athletic ability. The competition starts this week with Long Jump events being held on the back oval at lunchtimes. Students just need sports shoes to compete at the following times:- Yrs 5 and 9 were today, Yrs 6 and 10 on Friday, Yrs 8 and 12 on Monday and Yrs 7 and 11 on Tuesday. Please encourage your son to participate and be an active member of his House.

2012 will be a significant year in the history of St Patrick’s College as we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the College. As part of this special year of celebration, St Patrick’s College will be hosting the 2012 Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League (QISSRL) Confraternity Carnival. The carnival is one of the most formidable schoolboy rugby league competitions in Australia and will involve forty teams from across the State. As part of St Patrick’s 60th Anniversary celebrations, this prestigious carnival promises to be an exciting event for the College and many hours have been spent ensuring it will be a tremendous success. The carnival usually costs around $25-30000 to run each year, with nearly 1000 players and officials in-volved. Recent carnivals have provided an opportunity for the host school to raise funds to improve their facilities. The College is planning to raise funds to run an outstanding carnival for all the participating schools, plus provide some additional funds to enhance the sporting program and facilities offered by St Patrick’s College. The 2012 carnival will be held at St Patrick’s sporting fields at Curlew Park Shorncliffe. These sporting fields are in fact community fields with hundreds of students from many schools and communi-ty groups using the facilities each week. St Patrick’s College maintains the sporting facilities and constantly upgrades the facilities for the benefit of the College community as well as the wider community of the neighbouring suburbs. I invite you to follow the link below to go to the Confraternity Carnival page on the College website which contains more relevant information about the sponsorship of this exciting carnival. If you are interested in being a partner in the success of the 2012 Confraternity Carnival please contact Robyn Donaldson on 36319039 or email [email protected] to assist with any further enquiries or to give further advice on setting up a sponsorship package.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL CURRICULUM— CHRIS CAMPBELL

The Year 10 online subject selection program is now open and will remain open until the afternoon of the SET interview day on Friday 26 August. Any changes after this day will require contact with the Assistant Principal Staff and Administration, Mr Ray Celegato. On the subject selection morning last Friday we spoke to Year 10s about satisfying prerequisites in order to be able to choose certain subjects. For example, if a student has not passed mathematics in Year 10 the program will not allow him to select Mathematics B in Year 11. If a student selects English Communication in Year 11 the program will not allow him to select subjects such as Film, TV and Media, Art, Drama, Health Education, and so on. The reason for this is that if a student is acknowledging he is unable to handle the Queensland Studies Authority English course, then it is unlikely that he will be able to handle the theory com-ponent of many other subjects. Students at St Patrick’s are able to select three types of subjects. These include Authority Subjects which con-tributes towards an OP score at the end of Year 12, Authority Registered Subjects and TAFE Certificate courses which do not contribute towards an OP. In recent years the College has moved away from offering a large selection of Authority Registered Subjects. In 2012 only Religion and Ethics, Prevocational Mathe-matics and English Communication will be available. Whilst these subjects do contribute points towards the Queensland Certificate of Education, we feel there are better non-OP options which provide far more ef-fective pathways. One option in particular is the undertaking of Certificate courses run either by the College, e.g. Furnishing or Engineering or Certificate courses run by the Brisbane North Institute of TAFE (BNIT). BNIT offer a range of Certificate III courses which I believe are a far superior option for students compared to Authority Regis-tered Subjects. An information booklet from BNIT was given to Year 10s last Friday. A representative from BNIT will also speak at the Year 10 Career Expo on Thursday 18 August. The advantage of selecting the Certificate III TAFE option as a subject is that it is included in the student’s timetable, whereby students are able to spend a lesson each day working on their TAFE course. This is de-signed to compensate for the fact that students will be required to attend the TAFE College one day per week. I feel this is a better alternative for many of our boys rather than trying to master some of the more difficult subjects such as Biology, Chemistry or Information Processing and Technology, to name a few. It makes sense to consider a TAFE pathway and in doing so students have the best of both worlds as they may still remain OP eligible. Appointment times for SET Plan meetings on Friday 26 August will be sent home soon. Whilst we realise this is a working day for parents, we do feel that considering the importance of choosing the correct subjects it is very worthwhile setting aside a work day to do so. Students will need to bring their completed SET Plan and signed online subject selection receipt to the interview. Finally, congratulations again to last week’s academic medallion winners. Please see the list of prize winners on pages 4 and 5.

It’s been an exciting week for Debating at St Patrick’s. Our Firsts triumphed in a hotly contested third round finals debate against St Aidan’s and will thus advance into the quarter finals of the QDU Debating compe-tition. This is an incredible achievement and the boys should be commended for advancing, we believe, fur-ther than any St Patrick’s team before them. Congratulations to Nathanial Trappett, Aaron Loader, Liam Polkinghorne, Thymon Venter and star 12th Man, Joshua Smith (Year 11) who have worked hard to excel in the thinking man’s sport. The debate was packed with excited supporters, notably our Year 9 young men, but the boys would love to see some fresh faces when they battle it out next: August 24 – Gregory Terrace – 8:15pm start.

Last week I emailed all parent with a few reminders I have included those items in this edition of the Call-ing. It is important that together we maintain appropriate standards and continue to foster the partner-ship between Home and School. If circumstances change at home or you need to discuss an issue please free to make contact to the appropriate person. House Deans should be contacted if you are concerned about the welfare of your son. Lost Property: There is an enormous amount of lost items in the Student office, Jumpers, Spray Jackets, Sports Shorts and Sport Shirts. Mrs Fowlie tries to find the owner of the items of clothing however a large amount of the lost property is nameless. It is important to label every item of your son’s clothing. Inter-House Athletics – All students are expected to attend and participate in the Annual Athletics carni-val on Friday, 19 August. Students must wear full Sports uniform and go directly to Curlew Park on the day. The carnival will commence at 8.30am and conclude at 3.00pm. Parents are most welcome to come and watch or help out with timekeeping and judging. Students will be dismissed from Curlew Park. Buses will drop off and collect students from Curlew Park. The aim of the carnival is to promote participation, House spirit and fun. This is a Special Event Day so students absent from school must have a medical cer-tificate or completed Absence Declaration Form. If this procedure is not followed students will be given a Saturday detention. Injured students will be allocated a job to help on the day. Being part of a communi-ty has many positives outcomes. Being a part of events such as the Inter-House Athletics Carnival is a healthy component of your son’s education at St Patrick’s. Please do not allow your son to take a soft op-tion and opt out of the carnival. Hair: “Hair should be kept neat, tidy and above the collar, ears and eyebrows at all times. This is the underly-ing regulation regarding hair at St Patrick’s College.” We are half way through the term, I ask that you check your son’s hair and if required, make the necessary arrangements to have their hair cut to meet the College guidelines before the start of next week. I remind all students that their hair needs to be combed in a style that is appropriate for school. I ask that you check your sons diary Pages 21-22 for the full Hair and Grooming Guidelines.

St John Fisher Social: Year 8 to 12 only. Friday 12 August. 7:00pm to 10:00pm. Cost is $10.00. The venue is the Sandgate PCYC. School ID is required. Appropriate Clothing needs to be worn including closed-in footwear. All normal school rules and expectations apply. St Patrick’s is the only school that is invited

Year 10 Subject Selection Information Pack Last Friday the Year 10 students were given a Subject Selection Information Pack this pack contained a Job Guide. The Job Guide helps young people explore career options and make subject choices. It provides information about a wide range of occupations and the education and training pathways that lead to them. It also includes useful information on the job search process, provides details of available government assis-tance and suggests where to go for further information. The guide aims to list the most direct education and training pathway to an occupation, which is why combined degrees and postgraduate degrees are not in-cluded unless they are specifically required for entry to an occupation. Will it help me choose my Year 11 and 12 subjects? Job Guide includes 2011 course information and advises what subjects may be needed to get into certain courses. If you are a Year 10 student, you should check the specific entry requirements of the courses that you are interested in with educational and training institutions before you make subject choices for Years 11 and 12. These requirements may change by the time you are ready to go on to further edu-cation or training. Job Guide and other valuable career information is available online at http://www.jobguide.thegoodguides.com.au/ Looking for Work & Writing a Resume Looking for a job requires a positive attitude and careful planning. Job hunting is hard work but it can also be a journey of discovery. Your motivation level will affect your chances of finding employment. You will feel much more confident approaching this new phase if you have done some thinking and prepa-ration. It also helps to understand the job search as a process. Mastering this process is a very important step to developing skills in managing your own career. There are four steps to take when looking for work: Step 1: Preparing to look for work think about what you are really interested in and about your career goals collect and organise all relevant information about your skills, experience and attributes for a career portfolio find out what employers want. Step 2: Looking for a vacancy know where to look for work plan your job search systematically Step 3: Applying for positions know how to apply for a job know how to prepare for an interview Step 4: Reviewing your progress learn from each job application and interview think about what you could do differently

Visit to Cherbourg “Cherbourg was established by Salvation Army member William Thompson in 1899. Barambah/Cherbourg was taken over as a Government Settlement in 1904. Under the “Aboriginal Protection Act” tribes from all over Queensland and New South Wales were moved here. On the settlement, the government administration controlled almost every aspect of Aboriginal peoples’ lives; the language they spoke, what they ate, what they wore, where they went, for whom they worked and, in some cases, whom they would marry. Aboriginal people, removed to Cherbourg were either placed in dormitories or lived in camps. Large numbers of boys and girls, men and women were brought up away from families in the dormitories. Anyone breaking the strict laws were severely punished – locked up in jail or sent away to other reserves like Palm Island and Woorabinda. Small amounts of food were handed out from a shed. Tea, sugar, rice, salt, sago, tapioca, split peas, por-ridge, flour and meat, were given out in small amounts as rations. Today that same shed has been re-stored and is called the Ration Shed Museum and is a standing memorial to those days. “ (Ration Shed Museum Cherbourg) Reconciliation is about recognition and respect. These were the words told to us by Aunty Honor, who grew up on the mission in Cherbourg, as we headed on the bus into the small community of Cherbourg. On the 9th of August boys from Year 8 -11 and their parents who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Is-lander made the journey to this community of Cherbourg to learn about their past and history. Aunty Honor, who grew up on the mission in Cherbourg shared with us her story as we travelled on the bus. She told many stories such as how she would have to obtain a permit to leave Cherbourg to go to the next town and how they were restricted in terms of where they could and could not go on the mission. Aunty Honor was one of many who used for labour for various jobs, her wages like many other Indige-nous people at the time were taken and controlled by the government and never seen by her. When we first arrived we viewed an award winning DVD that showed the history of the Ration Shed. We were then shown through various parts of the facility including the dormitory were the boys slept. It was a cold day when we visited and the building also felt even colder, it is hard to imagine what it would have been like for the people who lived there. The Ration Shed also displays the unique history of Cherbourg including some of the sporting greats who came from the mission. This was a very important trip for the boys and parents who attended. Reconciliation involves looking at the past and giving it recognition and respect so we can move forward with honour. Special Congratulations to SPC Cross Country Team Last Saturday we witness yet again what our College of St Patrick’s is capable of with a team of runners that displayed good preparation, determination, courage, mateship and self-belief. For the second year in a row, under the guidance of Paul Toohey, Craig Gunn and a group of dedicated coaches our AIC Cross Country Team were successful in winning the 2011 AIC Cross Country Championship at Limestone Park, Ipswich. This amazing achievement was reached with our Under 13 Age Group placing 1st, Under 14 Age Group placing 1st, Under 15 Age Group placing 4th, Under 16 Age Group placing 3rd and our Open Age Group placing equal 1st with Iona College. Wining three of the five age groups secured our victory and St Patrick’s College being named the 2011 AIC Cross Country Champions. It would be remiss of me if I did not acknowledge the fantastic spirit and support shown by all the ath-letes themselves, our staff members who travelled to Ipswich, the large number of students who went along to support and spectate, the old boys who turned up and the overwhelming number of parents and other family members and friends who also offered their support. This day will long live in my memory as one of the most inspiring, courageous and memorable sporting achievements which I have been honoured to be a part of. For this, I thank all involved and especially the courageous 2011 St Patrick’s College Cross Country Squad lead by captains James Kelly, Jackson DaForno and Matthew Hall.
