Fr Costigan was St Patrick’s College’s first priest whilst Fr Roe was our most recently ordained priest. Fr Joe Duffy, another past student of St Patrick’s, was also planning to attend but unfortunately was unwell. Dear Members of the St Patrick’s College Community, I trust that the Exhibition Show Holiday enabled you and your family to have a welcome ‘breather’ in what has been a fairly busy and full term thus far. Mr Frank Torrisi AP Student Formation

I recently attended a Positive Parenting seminar dealing with “Raising Competent Teenagers”. The following is a summary of the information: A major challenge for parents of teenagers is knowing how best to encourage them to make the most of their time at school. It is often difficult to know what teenagers will find interesting and rewarding and what skills they need to get a job. During this time, conflict is normal and some disagreements over discipline are inevitable. Every parent has to develop their own approach to find-ing out what their children will do well at. The six key ingredients for teenagers becoming competent young adults are: developing self-discipline being a good problem solver establishing routine getting involved in school activities following school rules having supportive friends

Sourced from “Triple P Positive Parenting Program” Year 12 Formal - The Seniors enjoyed a special night on Tuesday with their formal held at the Hilton Hotel in the City. The young men displayed themselves in a manner that made their family and the College proud. I would especially like to thank Mrs Sandra Fowlie for her outstanding effort in organising the formal. Sandra spent endless hours liaising with the Hilton, sending out letters, organising lists, chasing boys for table groupings and partners’ names and organising all the little details to ensure the boys had a wonderful time. Inter-House Athletics – All students are expected to attend and participate in the Annual Athletics carnival tomorrow (Friday, 17 August). Students must wear full Sports uniform and go directly to Curlew Park on the day. The carnival will com-mence at 8.30am and conclude at 3.00pm. Parents are most welcome to come and watch or help out with timekeeping and judging. Students will be dismissed from Curlew Park. Buses will drop off and collect students from Curlew Park. The aim of the carnival is to promote participation, House spirit and fun. This is a Special Event Day so students absent from school must have a medical certificate or completed Absence Declaration Form. If this procedure is not followed students will be given a Saturday detention. Injured students will be allocated a job to help on the day. Being part of a community has many positives outcomes. Being a part of events such as the Inter-House Athletics Carnival is a healthy component of your son’s education at St Patrick’s. Please do not allow your son to take a soft option and opt out of the carnival.

St John Fisher Social - Year 8 to 12 only. Friday 24 August. 7:00pm to 10:00pm. Cost is $10.00. The venue is the Killoran Centre at St John Fisher College. School ID is required. Appropriate Clothing needs to be worn including closed-in footwear. All normal school rules and expectations apply. St Patrick’s College is the only school that is invited.

Thankyou to the large number of parents and boys who attended the year 10 subject selection evening on Monday. As indi-cated, the online subject selection portal is now open so that students may register their subject choice for Year 11 and 12. Information on how to complete this process may be found in the red sample bag which was given to students last Friday. When selecting subjects, please make detailed reference to the Year 11 and 12 “subject selection booklet and curriculum guide”, which contain important information. In particular, parents and boys need to be aware of the need to satisfy pre-requisite in order to be allowed to select certain subjects. For example, students who wish to complete such subjects as Film Television and Media, Health or Drama, must select Authority English rather than English Communication. Students wishing to select Mathematics B must have done Extension Maths in Year 10 and received at least a C+. The next important date for Year 10 is the SET Plan day on Friday 24 August. There are no classes for Year 10 on that day. Boys need only to attend for their interview. Interview times have been sent home via email. All Year 10’s must wear full school uniform for the interviews. Could I also ask that students come with the SET Plan booklet (which is in the red sample bag) completed fully. This needs to be done at home and reviewed at the meeting rather that spending time completing the booklet. At the end of the meeting the booklet is signed off and retained by the mentor. Similarly, students must bring the printed receipt of the subjects chosen. Year 8 students have also commenced their subject selection program for Years 9 and 10. A curriculum guide as well as in-formation regarding online subject selection was distributed on Thursday afternoon. Next Monday, 20 August, there will be a parent information evening commencing at 7.00pm. A flyer has been emailed home to Year 8 parents with the relevant details of the evening.

40 Hour Famine This weekend - 17 – 19 August - is 40 Hour Famine appeal. Many boys have signed up for the appeal and whatever they give up for 40 hours this weekend and the money raised will make a difference in the life of someone less privilege. A month ago we had Brittney Mackenzie, the Youth Ambassador for Queensland, speaking at the school assembly. Here is what she said about the 40 Hour Famine. Please support 40 Hour Famine –if you have not signed up yet please see the Ministry Office for assistance and booklets.

Brittney Mackenzie: Youth Ambassador for Queensland

I was born in Australia, a place where education is a given, food is a given, clean water…well, it’s everywhere! It comes from our taps in the kitchen, bathrooms and even our fridges! But hey, I have never thought twice of these privileges, I’ve always had access to it, so really, it never dawned on me how lucky I was. That was until I met people who were forced to go without.

If you’re among Ethiopia’s poor, you might not have been born in a hospital, instead your mother had you at home on a dirt floor. When you're ill, you can’t go to the hospital, instead you soldier on, praying for survival. This means, most of the time, school goes unattended. You are living in a one bedroom, mud house. My journey to Ethiopia highlighted the extent of difficulties families go through when they’re living in poverty. Everyone’s initial thought in a modern society is that people living in poverty “don’t have enough food” which is true, yet they can also face deadly diseases from unclean water, some are subject to HIV, child labour and sexual exploitation. A lack of education can mean there’s no way to get a job, and therefore no way of breaking the cycle of poverty. Why don’t we all stand togeth-er, do the 40 Hour Famine and fight against poverty! Diocesan Priesthood So you are thinking about priesthood. Is this life for you? Reflection on what some priests have said: I am often asked, especially by young people, why I became a Priest. Let me try briefly to reply. I must begin by saying that it is impossible to explain entirely. How does one explain the ways of God? Yet, I know that, at a certain point in my life, I became convinced that Christ was saying to me what he has said to thousands before me: "Come, follow me!" There was a clear sense that what I heard in my heart was no human voice, nor was it just an idea of my own. Christ was calling me to serve him as a Priest. And you can probably tell that I am deeply grateful to God for my vocation to the Priesthood. Noth-ing means more to me or gives me greater joy than to celebrate Mass each day and to serve God's people in the Church.. Nothing has ever changed, not even becoming Pope. Pope John Paul II. To be a Priest is to be a man of God. It is to lead people in the vision of transforming the world ac-cording to the mind of Jesus Christ. There is no more challenging or satisfying leadership role in the world today than Priesthood. After forty years of Priesthood I would be prepared to do it all again, each and every moment of it. Archbishop John Bathersby DD Archbishop of Brisbane. Dates to diarize: Ministry in Action meeting: Tuesday morning 28 August at 7 am Waterford Building Mass every Tuesday mornings 8 am in Chapel. THE REAL FOOTBALL NEWS The 2012 AFL season has come to an end. Our Under 14 team last week lost to Villanova in the semi-final which meant that we should have played this week for 3rd and 4th positions. Unfortunately the opposing team withdrew from the competition and as a result our Under 14 team finished the season in 3rd place behind Villanova (1st) and St Lawrence’s (2nd). There were too many sensational players in this team to name and selecting a Best and Fairest and Servium award recipients will be difficult. Mr Kerr will be in contact with all players shortly to organize an end of season lunchtime pizza party. The Under 16 team convincingly defeated St Lawrence’s last week to secure 5th position. The team’s two early and narrow losses to Marist and Padua meant that the team could never secure a finals position. The final was played between Padua and Marist with Padua winning the Under 16 premiership for 2012. Stand out performers this season included Kenny Puruntatameri and Adam Tipungwuti. These Tiwi Islanders have on many occasions managed to move the ball from our full back through the field and score goals demonstrating great athleticism and football skill. Other AFL players who have supported the AFL program at the College over the last four years include Sean Macko, Hamish Thompson, Tom Lahey, Luke Micallef, Daniel Seagrott, Ben Cox, Lochie Riordan, Marcus Reed and Cameron Borland. All these players have played in two premiership matches for their school. I would like to thank each of these players for their contributions to AFL at St Patrick’s College.

All boys are expected to attend training and the trial on Saturday in correct uniform. The first round of AIC competition is on the 25th August; all boys must have a numbered singlet by this date. Boys are permitted to wear college P.E. shorts during games so long as all pockets have zips. SPC basketball shorts are available for purchase from the uniform shop if desired. SPECTATORS:
