I trust that your long weekend was an enjoyable one. I certainly could get used to the concept of a three day weekend. 

This week has been another special week for St Patrick’s College. With Mother’s Day approaching this weekend our College assembly had a mother’s theme. 

The previous week’s Assembly had  its prayer  focussed on Mothers,  in par cular the mothers of the boys  in O’Rourke 6. This week we had two staff speak 

about  their  journey on motherhood. Cherie Nowlan our  IT Manager,  spoke about her  journey about being a new mother, whilst Robyn Donaldson, David 

Gardiner’s Assistant, spoke about being a grandmother. Both women spoke very powerfully and honestly. In an all boys se ng it is important that we con nue 

to remind ourselves about our parents and in par cular our mothers. As a member of the St Patrick’s College staff I was very proud of our mothers who spoke 

and I thank all of our mothers at St Patrick’s College for the great support they lend to their sons. I hope you all have a wonderful day on Sunday. 

Also  at  our  Assembly  on  Tuesday Michael Wallace,  (Year  12)  spoke. Michael’s  purpose  of  speaking was  to  encourage  students  to  apply  for  a  range  of 

scholarships that are available  in the science area. The reason for Michael speaking was that he himself has been a recipient of different scholarships over 

recent  mes and he was very keen to encourage other students to consider applying. However, at the Assembly it was necessary for me to put some further 

context around Michael’s achievements. They are  really quite extraordinary and outstanding.  I would also  like  to outline  to  the wider St Patrick’s College 

community what Michael has  achieved.  In 2010 Michael was  selected  as Queensland’s Na onal  Youth Ambassador  for Health  research.  In 2011 Michael 

applied and was successful in gaining selec on to the Na onal Youth Science Forum in Canberra which gathered 450 of Australia’s top science students. 

As  part  of  this  scholarship  program Michael  travelled  to  Canberra  and  par cipated  in  programs with  other  students  from  across  Australia.  This was  an 

outstanding achievement  for Michael. As a result of Michael’s  involvement  in this program he made applica on to and was successful  in being selected to 

a end  the  Research  Science  Ins tute,  for  a  6 week  program,  at Massachuse s  Ins tute  of  Technology  (MIT)  later  this  year.  This  is  also  an  outstanding 

achievement. However, when put in context it is even more outstanding. There are only 80  students selected for this program from throughout the world. Of 

these only 30  came  from outside  the United States. Michael  is one of  two  students  from Australia  selected  for  this program. This  is  truly an outstanding 

achievement and I congratulate Michael on his great work. Michael is very keen for other students to apply for the various programs available. 

The College Parents and  Friends have decided  that as part of  their  support of  the College  they will  create a program  to  support  students  in  the area of 

academic excellence. I thank the P & F for their generosity and support. The St Patrick’s College Parents and Friends Bursary for Academic Excellence will be 

awarded annually to a student or students who demonstrate outstanding academic excellence. It  is my pleasure to announce that the  inaugural St Patrick’s 

College Parents and Friends Bursary  for Academic Excellence  is Michael Wallace.  I congratulate Michael and again  thank  the P & F  for  their  ini a ve and 

generosity. 

Next week  the Old Boys will have  their  ’Old Boys  and  Legends Night’  in  the Waterford  Building on  Friday  evening.  This will be  followed by  the Back  to 

Shorncliffe Day on Saturday. These are two significant events and I encourage our College community to support  these events. Check the College Website and 

the Calling for further details. 

The following week I leave St Patrick’s College to join some other staff from EREA to par cipate in a study program through the Kennedy Business School at 

Harvard University in Boston. I am very excited about this program and believe that the course will provide me with valuable insights that I can translate back 

here at St Patrick’s College.  I will be away from the College for  just over 2 weeks and will return to Australia on 8  June.  I will give you an update upon my 

return. 

Finally  this week, a reminder to all parents that the students in Years 5, 7 and 9 will par cipate in the NAPLAN tests next week and wish all students the very 

best during this demanding tes ng period.

Our thoughts and prayers are very much with the students, staff and parents of St Columban’s College as they deal with the 

tragic events of this week. Safety of our children are paramount and when this is compromised it provokes severe emo ons. 

We pray for strength for the St Columban’s community. 

At our Induc on Mass in February two Year 12 students from each House were inducted as House Leaders for 2012. Many 

Senior students were disappointed at missing out on being selected as a nominated leader. A number of these students 

have shrugged off that disappointment to con nue to be great role models and leaders within their House. They have prov-

en themselves to be men of word, of ac on and of character. At our Blessed Edmund Rice Feast Day Liturgy last     Friday we 

were proud to announce the selec on of seven Year 12 students to the role of House Leaders for 2012. I       congratulate 

the following students on their appointment as House Leaders:-       

Russell Brooks – Coffey, Liam Anderson – Kennedy, Chris Li le – Mooney, Tom No  – O’Rourke, Braddick Aylward – Quane, 

Konnar Gerandonis – Rice, Tom Roberts – Treacy 

 

 I have received a number of correspondence from companies promo ng exchange programs overseas for students. This 

par cularly applies to Year 12 students who may be seeking a worthwhile experience in their first year out of school, but 

con nuing their educa on. Lachlan Be ngton, one of our College Vice-Captains, spent a year studying in South America 

before returning to complete his senior studies at St Patrick’s. Travel, living and studying overseas provides a person with so 

many opportuni es for growth and matura on. If any family would like more details about the various programs being 

offered they are welcome to contact me. 

 

 

Thank you to Mrs Maxine No  and her many helpers in organising the Mother’s Day stall this week. It helped to promote 

the importance of Mother’s Day for our boys. I will be telling my Mum I love her, and I certainly hope all our young men give 

plenty of hugs and ‘” I love you”  on Sunday to their Mothers and Grandmothers. Happy Mother’s Day to all our Mothers on 

Sunday.

My four year old daughter, Claudia, has some favourite phrases.  Unfortunately, one that she learned from some-where recently is, “It’s not fair!”  Generally, Claudia is quite adept at expressing this thought with some convic on, especially a er she has been dealt an extreme injus ce such as not being given any dessert un l she has finished her dinner.    Children have an understanding of what “rights” are before they have an understanding of the responsibili es linked, and o en it is up to parents, family members and teachers to assist children come to a clearer understand-ing of these rights and responsibili es.    Claudia is lucky – her rights are respected and granted (notwithstanding those rights concerning her favourite foods).  Claudia has the right to not be discriminated against, the right to a name, na onality, iden ty, to have the freedom to have individual thoughts and express those thoughts.  And these rights for Claudia, like the majority of children living in Australia, though not all, are respected and granted.  We of course know that not all children, na onally and globally, are granted these rights set out in the United Na‐ons Conven on on the Rights of the Child.  As an ins tu on, importantly a Catholic ins tu on, concerned first 

and foremost with providing educa on and opportunity to children, this is of course a jus ce issue away from which we must not shy.  If we advocate for anybody, it makes sense that we advocate for young people.  It is in-cumbent upon us, students, parents and teachers, to give a voice to those children without a voice.    On Tuesday of this week, St Patrick’s hosted a day of Professional Development, facilitated by the Global Learning Centre, on precisely this issue, and it is a topic which we are beginning to highlight more and more in our commu-nity.  In fact, St Patrick’s has formed a rela onship with “Save the Children”, Australia's leading independent emer-gency relief and development organisa on for children.  This organisa on oversees a United Na ons program called the “Global Peace School Program”, and we as a College are in the process of becoming the first school in Queensland to be accredited as a “Global Peace School”.  This is exci ng, not because it will bring our College recogni on, but because it affirms the work we are doing in providing an educa on which equips our young peo-ple to build peace locally and globally through rela onship, ac on and advocacy.    I’ll cut to the chase – this is quite a big deal.  We hope to be formally accredited on the last day of Term 3, when we will celebrate this achievement in a liturgy and be presented with a United Na ons flag which we will be able to display as a symbol of our work in the important area of human rights.  I think this will then act as a constant reminder of the children whose voices are not heard – those children for whom young men from St Patrick’s     College must speak up.    My daughter Claudia may not need someone to speak up for her at the moment, but if she did, I would love to know that there were people out there who cared enough to do so.  It is crucial that we are those people.  I look forward to having many more conversa ons with students, staff and parents about this issue – if you would like to be involved in any way, please let me know: mhawkins@stpatricks.qld.edu.au.

CURRICULUM

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week, students in Years 5,7 and 9 will complete the na onal Tes ng program in literacy and numeracy (NAPLAN).  This is an important three days of tes ng for a number of reasons. The main purpose of the tests for myself and College teach-ing staff is that they provide excellent informa on about student strengths and weaknesses. As a consequence we are able to plan more effec ve teaching units and lessons, designed to cater more effec vely for student’s academic needs.  The purpose of the tests for parents is that the results provide a good guide as to the level of your son’s literacy and numeracy skills. Pathways that a young man may wish to follow once he has finished school are becoming increasingly compe ve and a strong performance in all forms of tes ng, whether school based or external is very important.   One reason that a strong performance on external tests such as NAPLAN, is important is that all results are published online for anyone to access. In a compe ve world, it is quite simple for employers to compare the results of St Patrick’s students to stu-dents across Australia. The stronger reputa on we have as a school, the more advantageous it is for our students.  Class teachers in Years 5 and 7 have worked with their students in providing ample prac ce opportuni es. English and Maths teachers in Year 9 have also been ac ve in taking students through their paces. For Year 9 students, a final run through will be held during periods 1 and 2 on Monday morning.  Students are reminded of the need to be organised, especially in terms of the equipment they require. Please make sure you adhere to the following:  1.  Complete any prac ce books or ac vi es this week. 2.  Bring calculators to the numeracy exams. 3.  Make sure you have wri ng materials - 2B or HB pencil only. NB no pacers 4.  Get a good night’s sleep. 5.  Eat dinner and have a good breakfast before you come to school  Good luck. This is a great opportunity to show how good we are.

On Assembly  this week we were very  fortunate  to  listen  to Mrs Cherie Nowlan and Mrs Robyn Donaldson as a  tribute to all the Mothers in our community. I hope all the Mothers are spoilt this week and every week by their wonderful children. I wish all the mums a very special Mother’s Day this Sunday.  Uniform: All students were made aware of wearing the College uniform correctly. We have spoken at lengths on this topic and will now issue consequences to those who cannot follow simple instruc ons. One issue that I need to bring  to your a en on  is the  length of your son’s socks.  If your son has grown considerably he may need  to  purchase new socks. Socks should be knee high in length. Grey or Black socks need to be worn with long trousers not white socks. Your assistance in maintaining these standards is appreciated.  Hair Week:  I ask that you have the following conversa on over the dinner table. Next week  is half way through the term and is generally known as “HAIR WEEK”. I ask that you check your son’s hair and if required, make the necessary arrangements  to have  their hair  cut  to meet  the College guidelines before  the  start of next week.  I    remind all students that their hair needs to be combed  in a style that  is appropriate for school. The “shaggy” look is not part of the Hair and Grooming policy at St Patrick’s College.   Public Transport: St Patrick’s is a great school but it can be let down in its public image if the students are poorly behaved  on  public  transport.  The  College  will  not  tolerate  poor  behaviour  on  public  transport.  Students             misbehaving in this area will face a range of consequences as a result of their ac ons. Boys who catch the train to and from school are reminded that they are not to break their  journey.  If they are changing trains at Northgate Sta on  they must  catch  the  first  available  train  to  their  des na on.    Students must  not wait  around  on  the pla orm for friends and then catch the late train as this o en delays their arrival too school.    St John Fisher Dance: Year 8 to 12. Friday 11 May.  7:00pm to 10:00pm.  Cost is $10.00. The venue is the Killoran Centre at St John Fisher.  ID is required.  Appropriate Clothing needs to be worn including footwear. It is expected that normal school rules and expecta ons will apply at this event. St Patrick’s College is the only school invited and it is expected that our young men are fine ambassadors for our College. No Singlets or Thongs allowed. It is      expected that normal school rules and expecta ons will apply at this event. 

A er our ac on-packed previous week, this week almost seemed an an -climax for QDU deba ng.  Our Year 11 team and Year 9 Team 2 both had wins from forfeits (perhaps news of our excellent deba ng form is reaching our opposi on early and they are too scared to front?).  This le  just our Year 9 Team 1 to debate in their first short prepara on debate of the season.  For two of the three speakers this was their first a empt at the short            prepara on debate.  Mrs Newman is doing a tremendous job in coaching these boys and all three speakers were commendable.  Whilst the boys were defeated, their opposing team from Caboolture State High School were an       excep onally skilled team and the boys, Harrison Hanelt, Lachlan Kuhr and William Sked can hold their heads very high.  It’s refreshing to see this team really building on the feedback given a er each debate, with all speakers   really improving in their roles.  Ahead – Wednesday 16 May (hope to see you there): Year 10 at Genesis Chris an College Team Hewi  at 8.15pm Team Wa s at 7.00pm  Year 12 at St James  Team Brough at 8.15pm  Year 12 at St Paul’s at 8.15pm

What a great start to term 2!  

Q uane house has been a hive of ac vity; the ‘beep’ test was a great experience for  students and teachers alike with an amazing 100% par cipa on from all. Even Br Pritchard had a go.  The beep test was organised in prepara on for 

the Inter-House cross country carnival. Quane had some amazing performances on the day with three first places from Rhys Gwynn‐Jones (yr. 8), Jacob Caruana (Yr 9) and Corey Wagner (Yr 10). There were plenty of other boys who placed in the top ten and every Quane boy should be commended for their efforts on that day.  

Q uane prides itself on having the most fun in the Thursday morning ac vi es. We’ve had synchronized swimming contests, belly flop contests and sandcastle making contests                                    with everyone ge ng involved.   

 This week we had a House Breakfast with French Toast and bacon sandwiches.   

Q uane house will be volunteering in the 2012 Red Shield appeal on Sunday 20 May. We’ll be mee ng up at school at 9:00am and then move around the Shorncliffe area. Many people are happy to donate to this worthy cause. The day finishes at 12:00 and all who volunteer will get 

a Big Mac voucher and a meat pie.

Did you know that current talents such as Jonathan Thurston, Ma  Bowen, Ma  Sco , David Taylor, Daly Cherry-Evans, Ben Barba, David Shillington, Sco  Prince and Anthony ‘Hook’ Griffin all got their starts at a Confraternity Carnival?  There are countless more superstars from the past who have also been discovered at ‘Confro’. Carnival programmes have be-come collector items for League aficionado’s.  Find out who’s who of our up and coming talent at this year’s carnival and be one of those who can say I was working at the carnival where he was discovered!

DIRECTOR OF SPORT — MR LUKE DONATINI

SPC Rugby/Football – Is A Seven (7) Round Commitment  It is extremely disappoin ng to once again have to remind all students (and their parents) who have signed up and made a commitment to play sport for our College that they have indeed signed up and commi ed to both their College and their team for the en re seven (7) rounds of sport (rugby or football).  Last weekend saw a small percent of students in both CIC and AIC not a end their scheduled fixture of rugby or football. Some reasons sighted were that they were going away for the weekend, transporta on issues, work commitments etc. In most cases it was poorly communicated, if at all communicated.  These are all well and good excuses, but we would again like to reiterate our stance that should a St Patrick’s College       student sign up and commit to playing a sport for their College they are then EXPECTED to:  

A end ALL scheduled training sessions 

A end ALL scheduled Game Fixtures (Home and Away)  Should a student not be able to a end training or an AIC/CIC fixture game due to illness, injury or another feasible reason, it is only common courtesy that the parents of the student informs his coach or coordinator ASAP (early in the week       preferably) so that other arrangements can be made.   A call, email or message le  late on a Friday a ernoon or Saturday morning makes it very difficult for a coach or coordina-tor to make alternate arrangements and o en leaves their team short of players and places undue pressure on their team and team mates.  We trust that all parents of students par cipa ng in SPC Sport will indeed assist us with the above men oned. We thank you for your understanding and support of this ma er.  

St Patrick’s College Spectators At All CIC & AIC Fixture Games  We would like to remind all parents, students and supporters of St Patrick’s College that there is a spectator code of con-duct which all MUST abide by whilst at our College’s spor ng fixtures.   As this Saturday is Round 1 of our CIC and AIC Rugby and Football season for 2012, we ask the following without excep on:  Our expecta ons for ALL SPC Spectators (without excep on) are:   

All spectators are to use courteous behaviour at all  mes without excep on.  

Use appropriate language at all  mes (swearing of any descrip on on or off the playing field will not be tolerated).  

For students, correct dress standards both on and off the playing field at all  mes. All Year 8 to 12 students who re‐main at AIC rugby/football events to spectate MUST change into FULL College Formal Uniform (this will include black belt, College grey socks and black school shoes). All students will be required to wear their College  e in Term 2. 

 

ALL spectators are reminded that we would like posi ve and encouraging cheering only (nega ve cheering and taunts will not be tolerated). 

 

ALL spectators are to respect the decisions of game referees and venue officials at all  mes.  

  For students, SPC spor ng events are not ‘social func ons’ for our students to interact with girls from other   schools.  Those students a ending an SPC spor ng event are there to compete on the spor ng field and/or to    support other SPC spor ng teams who are compe ng. 

 

  All spectators are reminded that Curlew Park is a non‐ alcohol and non‐ smoking venue. We ask that everyone     respect this and refrain from consuming alcohol or smoking within the Curlew Park precinct. 

 Any St Patrick’s College student or supporter (parent/’old boy’ etc.) who does not follow the above men oned expecta ons on ‘game days’ may very well be asked to leave the spor ng venue. Further ac on may be taken in the preceding week should it be deemed necessary.

Mee ng - The May general mee ng of the support group will take place on Monday 14 at 6pm in the Boardroom in Morven.  (moved because of last week’s public holiday) Parents of  Rugby , Football and Cross Country are especially invited to a mee ng which lasts about an hour.

  AIC CROSS COUNTRY DETAILS FOR NUDGEE COLLEGE MEET

Friday May 11

1.  You wear your normal uniform to school.  2.  The bus will depart from Signal Row at 3:10pm  3.  Let Mr Toohey, Mr Gunn know by Wednesday May 9 if you are compe ng.  If you are a first   me compe tor with a training history he will give you the Cross Country T Shirt that you are to   wear to the event.  4.    You compete in either your St Patrick’s Athle c singlet or your cross Country T Shirt.     The Athle c Singlets and shorts are for sale from the clothing store.  5.  The races will start and finish on the athle cs track.  Please do not wear spikes.  6.  The scheduled  mes for This meet are as follows:   4.20 pm    13 yrs race    3kms     4.22 pm    14 & 15 yrs race  4km   4.40 pm    16 & Opens race  6km  7.  Drink plenty of water and warm down well a er your run.  8.  Put on warm clothes for the trip home to avoid catching a cold.  9.  Enjoy your run  10.  Presenta ons for the meet will take a er each race.  

There will be no bus returning to SPC. You will need to organise your own transport home.

Friday 27 May 2012  Hi Parents and Players  To assist in improving our general standard of tennis play, to view a different perspec ve of the coaching angle with the assistance of invited specialist coaches, different venues to our usual training courts, and to enjoy the sport more we have ini ated and received a commitment to run a clinic for five days in our third week of June/July holidays, Monday 2nd July – Friday 6th July at an all-inclusive cost of $120.  The College has commi ed to giving each par cipant a tennis cap and water bo le.  It is my expecta on and hope that all AIC poten al players, except those who will be away with family in faraway places, will a end.  Please register your inten on to a end by speaking with either Brad Harbo le on 0412 961 651 or me at College or on 3631 9000.  For payments  please see Mrs Schultz in the Administra on Office.   Further details will be forthcoming once all arrangements have been finalized.  The College bus will be available for 23 players each day.  May we all have an enjoyable, safe and successful tennis season.
