The entire team went over to the Ashgrove team and congratulated each member of the Ashgrove team. It was a great sign of sportsmanship by the St Patrick’s College runners and it did not go unnoticed. Congratulations to the Under 15 and Open teams who both won their age group and to the Under 14 age group who were second (by 1 point). My thanks also to the coaches who have worked tirelessly this season to prepare the runners. My thanks to the many staff, parents and old boys who came and supported last Saturday. Our attention is now turned to the Senior Theatresports team who next week will compete in the Queensland Finals. This is an excellent achievement and I know that they will have a huge band of supporters cheering them on in the final. Tickets for the final are available via the College Office. It should also be noted that many of our debating teams have progressed into the ‘Finals Round’ of the QDU debating competi- tion and our musicians are rehearsing for the upcoming Queensland Catholic Colleges Music Festival. Good luck to all. Finally this week it would be remiss of me if I did not comment on what a great day was had at the Grandparents Liturgy last week. The Waterford Building was ‘packed to capacity’ for our mass and morning tea. Academic Assembly An Academic Assembly will be held this coming Tuesday. The assembly will recognise academic excellence on the part of students from Years 5-12 for Semester 1 this year. Lists of prizewinners are published below and can be viewed at Mr Gardiner’s office. Letters have been sent home inform-ing parents of their son’s achievement. The Assembly will commence at 9.30, but parents who have accepted the invitation to attend are welcome to enter the Callan Centre from 9:15. Could I ask that parents sit in the middle rows. It would be appreciated if parents would fill up from the front rows rather than spreading out around the Callan Centre. The growth of the student body has resulted in difficulties when it comes to finding adequate seating for the boys at gatherings of this kind. As part of the award ceremony, concert pianist Gil Sullivan will preform for us. Award winners are requested to meet at

the Callan Centre at the beginning of period 7 on Monday for a final run through.

Year 10 Subject Selection Year 10 students are about to embark on a busy subject se-lection process throughout the month of August. Next Friday 10 August in periods 1 and 2, Heads of Curriculum will speak to the boys about subject options for Years 11 and 12. This session will be repeated for both parents and boys on Mon-day 13 August. An email will be sent home outlining all times and venues relevant to the process. A reminder to all parents and boys that there will be no Year 10 classes on Friday 24 August. This is the Year 10 SET planning day. Appointment times will be emailed to all families soon. As indicated before, whilst this is a working day for parents, it is also an extremely important day for your sons. We feel it is essential that par-ents are able to make appropriate work arrangements in order to accompany their sons to the interviews.

Mr Frank Torrisi AP Student Formation

It has been a positive start to Term 3 this year and it is hoped that the young men have settled into the routine of regular school work and home study. I think it is timely to remind all parents if they have any concerns or need some further guid-ance on any issue that they contact their son’s House Deans. I would also like to welcome and congratulate Ms Katie Spen-cer who has replaced Mr John Cross as the Acting Rice House Dean.

Year 11 Dinner Dance The Year 11 Dinner Dance will be held this Friday evening 3 August at Kedron Wavel RSL Club at Chermside. The function will commence at 7.00pm and conclude at 11.00pm no stu-dents will be permitted to leave before this time.

The Year 12 Formal Will be held next Tuesday 14 August at the Hilton Hotel in the city. We wish the Senior students all the best for their special night. Parents are welcome to join us at the Hilton between 6.15pm and 7.00pm for pre dinner drinks and fami-ly photos. The evening will conclude at 11.00pm. No students will be permitted to leave before this time.

Hair We are at the end of week 4 and have observed that there are a large number of students that are right on the border-line of the hair and grooming policy. I ask that these boys make the necessary arrangements to have their hair cut to meet the College guidelines before the start of next week, it would be appreciated if you could attend to this over the weekend. We have spoken to a number of boys and have sent letters to parents of those boys who are required to have their hair cut earlier. Hair needs to be combed in a style that is appropriate for school. I am happy to make arrange-ments with the local Hairdressers/Barbers if required.

Uniform The wearing of our College uniform is an outward sign of self respect and respect for our College. We wish to address two aspects of this over the next few weeks. Year 10-12 students must wear their blazers to and from school each day and all students must use their College Bag. Last week Group Tutors checked each student with regard to correct shoes, black leather belt, tie and drawstring bag. I ask all parents to assist Group Tutors by ensuring your son has all the correct items of the College uniform and that each item is clearly labeled.

Inter-House Athletics

All students are expected to attend and participate in the Annual Athletics carnival on Friday, 17 August. The main aim of the day is to promote participation by all students in all age groups. Events have been organised to enable every student to participate and gain points for his House. Injured students will be allocated a job to help on the day. This is a Special Event Day which means every student absent from school that day is required to have a Medical Certifi-cate. If this procedure is not followed students will re-ceive a Saturday detention. Students must wear the full Sports uniform and will go directly to Curlew Park on the day. I ask all parents to ensure that their son is present and wear-ing the correct uniform.

Mr Luke Donatini Director of Sport

Congratulations SPC Cross Country The 2012 AIC Cross Country Championships held at Limestone Park last Saturday did not disappoint. I feel that Saturday’s event was one of the closest contested Cross Country Carnivals I have witnessed in many years. Each age group was close-ly challenged by every AIC College which meant that each College’s runners needed to dig deep to keep up with their competition. We, St Patrick’s College excelled in the Under 15s and the Opens with both age groups claiming victory. The Under 14s just missed out on victory and placed 2nd, and our U13’s and U16’s finished off with solid performances and both placing 5th. I would really like to sincerely thank all the ‘SPC X Men’ for their dedication and commitment to the 2012 Cross Country season and for what they have achieved for their College of St Patrick’s. Their performances would not have been so significant without the support, guidance and coaching of our wonderful Cross Country coaching and managing staff, and in particular the hard work and dedication of both Mr Paul Toohey and Mr Craig Gunn. To all of them on behalf of our College I say thank you and your efforts were extremely appreciated. I would also like to acknowledge the superb display of sportsmanship shown by all our students and coaching staff with the way in which they congratulated Marist College Ashgrove for their magnificent performance on Saturday at the con-clusion of the carnival. This was truly what sport is and should be about and we all can learn a lot from what was exhibited by all involved. It was truly something special. To our parents, families, staff and students student spectators who turned up to offer their support, I know that both the athletes and the coaching staff are extremely grateful and we are certain that without your ‘full on’ support the runners would not have found that little extra to fight harder. So finally in the words of Mr Gunn – ‘Run Tall X Men and kill that final hill’ and we now look forward an equally amazing Track and Field Season.

Mr Dom Crowley AFL Coordinator

What a great week for AFL. On Monday night we travelled to Iona College for round three of AFL. The Under 14 team were once again victorious defeating Iona 96 to 0. With twenty-six scoring shots most SPC players were directly involved in kick-ing goals. Players that had fantastic games included Cameron O’Sullivan, Marcus Ferguson, Aaron Macko and Jeremiah Dufourq. The Under 16 match was a tight contest for the first ¾ of the game. Iona kicked four goals in the first quarter and then nothing more until the last quarter. SPC kicked nothing in the first quarter, 3 goals in the second and 2 goals in the third and fourth quarters. Several SPC players had sensational games including Sean Macko, Hamish Thompson, Tom Lahey and Jayden Ayton. On Monday 6 August both AFL teams play at Kedron AFL club, Mercer Park, Sixth Avenue, Kedron. A College bus will be available to transport students to and from the game, depart-ing the College before 3pm and returning at about 6.45pm. This will be the last game of the season for our Under 16 team. If our Under 14 team win this week, they will play in the final on Monday 13 August at Yeronga AFL club with the game starting at 4.15pm. Once again a College bus will be

available to transport players to and from the game. All Under 14 players are expected to attend training from 3.15 – 4.30 at the Sandgate AFL grounds, Lemke Rd, Sandgate on Wednesday afternoon. If players are unable to train or play could they please email Mr Crowley as soon as possible. There is also a team meeting at morning tea on game days to dis-cuss team strategies. Please contact Mr Dominic Crowley (Director of AFL) by email [email protected] for further AFL information.

DEBATING NEWS Last night Round 2 of the QDU debating finals saw 5 of our St Patrick’s teams engaged in some thrilling debating action. Word of our debating might is clearly out and the QDU appear to have adopted a ‘divide and conquer’ mentality, placing our teams all at separate venues around the city. This made support difficult, but if anyone could come up with an effective support mentality it is the debating fanatics. All of our teams were lucky to have a legion of fans cheering them on. This makes all the difference and we can’t thank this loyal band of parents, siblings and friends enough. Unfortunately it was a tough night at the office for some of our teams. Both our Year 11 and our Year 10 (Team 2) were nar-rowly defeated. Both of these teams spent many hours preparing for their debates and they were unlucky not to win. Our Year 8’s (having already won their first final last week) felt the sting of some refereeing decisions that were so dubious they almost seemed to rival those seen in the final Red’s game. However, two of our teams managed to destroy their opposition, thus charging on next week. Congratulations to our Firsts team who smashed their opposition with a comprehensive 7 point victory. The young men ended up fighting a rather tricky definitional debate, but (owing to some excellent English teachers at the College) we can say that Angus Lane, Duncan Moir and Joshua Smith were far superior at defining ‘subsidies’ than their rival team. Whispers back from QDU headquarters had our Year 10 (Team 1) team certain runners up in their big match against the powerhouse Churchie. The Churchie boys were ‘certainties for the finals’ with a coach who fills the Vice Presidency at QDU. However, someone forgot to give this memo to our boys and their coach, Ms Hewitt, and they had a stunning, well deserved, 2 point victory. This sort of upset makes the men’s 4x100 Olympic relay failure to launch look more like a fizzle. We’ve been saying it for a long time, debating is clearly where the action is at. Next week, both on Wednesday evening, sees both advancing teams engaged in short preparation debates: Year 10 @ Marist College @ 8.15pm (subjects given out at 7.15pm) Year 12 @ BSHS @ 8.15 (subjects given out at 7.15pm) Ms Zoe Morgan Debating Coordinator
