Accompanying our Lecture Series will be related
health screenings to inform, educate & empower

Dear Friends andNeighbors,
The start of a newseason and with it achange in thenomenclature of thisletter. Dear Membershas been used so manytimes it is boring andnot necessarily
accurate........friends and neighbors more aptlydescribes my feeling towards you. So, achange ….
It is the start of a new season and what will itoffer us you ask? Well, for what seems like along time, one with no construction .......aseason of enjoyment, appreciation of what weall have accomplished and utilization of ourfacilities to the fullest.
The first grand event of the season is Membermeet Member, a time for all of us to gettogether, get to know someone new ( perhapsa new neighbor ) and have an incredibleevening filled with superb cuisine and greatmusic. If you have not attended Member/Member before, this is the year to come. Ipromise, just the entrance to our Club alonewill be worth the effort, and then, when youenter..........I just can’t wait to see your faces.
That’s just the beginning - New Year’s Evepromises to be a gala that will rival almostanything, and our specialty nights such asValentines will continue to impress and the listgoes on.
Now, for your palate - we aim to please andhead chef Joe Longo and his extremelytalented associates will not disappoint you.Whether it be Burgers ‘n Brews, Red HotTuesday, Italian night, our a la carte dinnersor a simple dinner under the stars at our Bistro, our Club offers something special for everyone.
I can’t leave out our sensational socialdepartment headed by Al and Sue with amplesupport by our committee volunteers.Extravaganzas galore are planned for yourentertainment, participation and stimulation ofyour brains. They are far too numerous tomention here but make certain you open youremails and read the flyers posted in theclubhouse. Choose the activities that fit youand enjoy all.
I mentioned “open your emails” above and thatdeserves a little more space. Approximately fifty(50) percent of the emails sent to you gounopened!
Yes, a very high number. To make this an evenmore important percentage our Club gets at
least 2-5 comments daily asking why an activitywas not promoted, why a change was neverannounced, etc. When the response is that itwas and the individual is shown the email, thecommon reply is that “I never received it”. Theremedy is easy - open your e-mails from theClub and at least peruse through them. Whoknows - you might find something useful.
In October something quite unique to gatedcountry club communities happened in BrokenSound; as a result of the initiative and ensuingBylaw amendment passed by your Board inJune, thirty one (31) members were advisedthey were able to change their membershipcategory! Some might say about time andsome that it was due them, but to be able todo this without affecting the amount of duesof every other member, is something to beappreciated and to be proud of by all. Your Clubonce more has taken the lead. Yes, there werefees paid by these members pursuant to therules; however the payback to these membersis between 3 to 5 years dependent on certaincircumstances. On a cash flow basis only, allmembers see a positive position in their firstyear!
All of you are proud of your Club and youshould be. Not only are our facilities among (ifnot) the top in South Florida and the envy ofmany, but we are positioned better than manyother clubs to take full advantage of theparadigm shifts that are ongoing in ourmarketplace. Our conservative financial policieshave resulted in our Club being in an extremelygood financial position with over $3.6 milliondollars in reserves. Additionally our sound fiscalplans regarding membership categories andequity have formed the groundwork for thatamount to substantially increase now and inthe future.
Be assured that our Club will never reach itspinnacle. Our management team, the Boardof Governors and you, our members, will onlyaccept the highest level of services andoperations performed on a fiscally sound basis.
As a further note, you will see information inthis newsletter regarding the municipalelections in Boca in March, and we have twomembers of Broken Sound running for CityCouncil, Michael Mullaugh and Scott Singer, who are hoping for your support on March11th. Regardless of how you vote, we urgeeveryone to cast their ballots.
That’s it for this month. Enjoy every momentto the fullest, we only have one go around andmake very day count.
Best regards,Ivan Snyder, PresidentBoard of Governors

OLD COURSE NEWSOLD COURSE NEWSOLD COURSE NEWSOLD COURSE NEWSOLD COURSE NEWSby John Skaf PGA Director of Golf - Old Course
With the season here and
in full swing, it is great to
see so many people back
here at The Old Course.
This past off-season was a
busy one, compiling an
extensive tournament and
event schedule.
The Men’s and Ladies’ Leagues will have a full
schedule, featuring various formats as well as
“mixer events”. This season there will be five
Couples Social tournaments that will be played
on Sundays throughout the season. There will
also be a Couples Championship held in
February.
The success of last year’s two Member Guest
days for both the men and women has given
us the opportunity to provide the same for this
year.
This past October, The Old Course hosted The
Boca Cup which featured ten clubs from the
Boca Raton area. The team of Broken Sound
was comprised of Jeff Waber, Sal Caragliano,
Ron Alexander, Larry Moses, Michael Lapkin,
Harvey Feldman, Alan Myer, Jim Wick, Robert
Smiley and Alan Brumel. The team finished in
second place, missing the top honors by just
one stroke.
We will continue to host demo days from
companies such as TaylorMade, Ping, Titleist,
Callaway and Cobra. Please check your club
calendar for the respective dates and times.
We ask that you help us keep the course in
great condition by repairing ball marks, filling
divots and raking bunkers. Should there be
anything we can do to enhance your Old
Course experience, please let us know.

Inaugurated five years ago, The Boca Cup is an annual one-day competition among
ten of the most prestigious country clubs in the Boca Raton area.
The tournament included five teams from each club in best-ball format. Each team
consisted of five two-man pairings, one pair formed by the club’s professional and
low amateur, two pairs with handicap indexes up to 15.0 and two pairs with 15.1 –
22.0 indexes. Scores were handicapped to 90% of index and the aggregate of the

into “Match Mode”into “Match Mode”into “Match Mode”into “Match Mode”into “Match Mode”
A successful tennis playerknows the effectiveprocedure of getting into“match mode” before playing
a competitive match. The importance of startinga match after being both fully warmed up andspending ample time in match mode can not beoverestimated! Rushing to the match with only theofficial ten minute warm up period to prepare isabsolutely insufficient. Not only is it not enoughtime to get your body ready but you will not besetting yourself up for success mentally, either.Make it a point to arrive in plenty of time so as tospend twenty to thirty minutes warming up andreserve those last ten minutes before the matchto assess your opponents instead.
Your warm up is an opportunity to hit most of theshots, volleys, overheads, forehands, backhands, serves, returns, and approach shots. You shouldalso try to play a few points to get a sense of howyou are feeling and playing. By the time the officialten minute warm up begins, you should alreadyhave broken a sweat. Use this time instead to getan idea of your opponents strengths andweakness:
Does your opponent have good volleys or is he/she better at the baseline?
Does your opponent take any volley or overheadpractice?
Does your opponent have a good serve?
Does your opponent move well?..etc….
Assess the weather conditions:
Is it windy?

BOCA FRIENDS FOR CANCER RESEARCH
Wow, I just evened out my bikini lines and the
car carriers are here again with the snowbirds
following shortly. We welcome back all of our
members and friends and hope that you had
a healthy and enjoyable summer. Welcome
home.
We at Boca Friends chapter of the Papcorp
champions for cancer research have been very
busy planning a fabulous 2013-2014 season.
Now is the time to renew your membership.
You have made a real difference in the ongoing
battle against cancer. Over the last 60 years,
The Pap Corps has donated well over $43
million dollars to the Miami Miller School of
Medicine. You are part of the success and your
help is still very much needed in helping us
raise these funds.
We have such an exciting calender. Kick off the
season on November 19, 2013 at 3:00pm in
the media room with guest speaker Liz Sterling
author and motivational speaker. After
interviewing over 2,000 authors, celebrities,
For Now. For Life. For Now. For Life. For Now. For Life. For Now. For Life. For Now. For Life.We hope everyone had an
enjoyable summer where
ever you sojourned.
Hadassah’s activities both
at home and abroad
continued to produce
empowering results.
Allow us to update you on your financial
support at work.
Here in the U.S. we continue supporting the
work of our camps, youth activities and health
screening and education at the high school
level. The focus is teaching young people self
examination for testicular and Breast Cancer.
Hadassah’s commitment to Women’s Health
has resulted in direct work with our legislators
recommending and fostering programs
directed at educating and caring for the female
population in this nation.
This focus dovetails with the Hadassah Hospital
program that we will be presenting this year
entitled “Every Beat Counts”. This year long
effort is based on the data that “one out of
every two women will experience some form
of heart disease in their lifetime”, that heart
disease is the NUMBER ONE KILLER OF
WOMEN and that heart disease is different in
women than in men.
The hospital has established a new Heart
Institute. Clinics at both Ein Kerem and Mt.
Scopus constitute an inter-disciplinary team.
The aim is to provide at risk women evaluation
and tools to “change damaging behavior”.In The LoopIn The LoopIn The LoopIn The LoopIn The LoopWebsite Calendar of EventsWebsite Calendar of EventsWebsite Calendar of EventsWebsite Calendar of EventsWebsite Calendar of Eventswww.brokensoundclub.org

“The Institute staff is already involved in several
projects in the Arab and the Ultra Orthodox
Jewish communities, where cultural issues and
social norms often preclude women from taking
control of their health.
Outreach programs utilize social knowledge,
planning programs in Arab schools where
mothers will congregate, rather than looking
for them to participate in a female only setting,
where attendance is unlikely.
There are two programs underway for Haredi
(religious Jewish women) one with 500
teachers in girls schools and one with a specific
religious community. There are also programs
for HMO employees at both hospital campuses.
Of course research is the basis of all that is done
and therefore, also is an integral part of the
program. Every program is evaluated and results
are used to improve delivery and outcomes.
Join us this season as we learn and can attempt
to apply features of “Every Beat Counts” to
our lives.
We look forward to seeing you at our CARD
PARTY, BOUTIQUE AND BRUNCH on
December 5th, at our General Meeting the
evening of December 9th and our first Lunch
and Learn at 11 am on December 13.
Look for our flyers and E-mails for details on all
upcoming events.
Feel free to contact us with questions and/or

We saw a photo ofan 86 day old male Atala flirting with a young female. He likedher, but she shooed him away with her little legs. It is a toughdating scene out there in butterfly world! We loved havingLorraine Conover, Pres. of the Boca Raton Orchid Society, comehere to teach us how to mount orchids on almost anything. Forour raffle she brought 10 Pigeon orchids, 10 Pulmaria PrincessVictoria branches, ready for planting, and is allowing 10 of ourmembers to tour her personal garden. How wonderful, is that?.

Volunteers for Israel is a non-profit U.S. organizationthat assists in the process of becoming a volunteerfor IDF. SAR-EL is an Israeli non-profit, internationalvolunteer group that assists the IDF in variouslocations throughout Israel by coordinatingvolunteers with their work experience.
Why would a 77 year old man decide to embark onsuch an adventure? I heard through friends andarticles about how SAR-EL’s mission was so criticalto the survival of the IDF and was looking forsomething to give back to the state of Israel. InsteadI found that this experience gave me back so muchmore than I ever could have imagined.
Every evening after dinner we would sit in aconference room with our IDF liaison and learn abouttheir important work, and history, but the bestmemory that is etched in my mine is the morningritual of raising the Israeli flag, and the soldiers, andvolunteers saluting it. Just knowing that in a smallway I may have helped to raise the flag another daywill inspire me for the rest of my life!
