“Out of Chaos, Hope”

Members, Larry and Rosemary Fitzpatrick, recently went to New Orleans fora week with a group from the First Presbyterian Church of Delray Beach toassist in cleaning out homes after Hurricane Katrina. Their duties included

cleaning out homes that had water upto the ceilings for several weeks, andremoval of the homeowner’spossessions, furniture, appliances,household items, rotted doors, drywall,flooring and cabinets for pickup byHazmat and trash haulers. Very littlewas salvageable. After they finishedthe day gutting houses, they wereassigned cooking and clean up dutiesaround the campsite. During their staytheir group completed gutting twohomes and assisted with several others.

As I’m sure you are aware by now,the Allianz Championship golftournament is being held here Feb.9-11th with all of the big names insenior golf coming to town. FromFeb. 5-8, there will be a series ofpro-am tournaments and anumber of NASCAR drivers will beplaying on Monday, February 5th.This should be a wonderful eventfor the entire city with proceedsgoing to the Boca RatonCommunity Hospital. The French Legion of Honor, which wascreated two centuries ago by Napoleon,is the highest decoration that Francecan confer on a citizen or foreigner andit recognizes exceptional service toFrance. On December 15, 2006, one

of our members, Mr.Philip Balsam, was arecipient and made aknight of the FrenchLegion of Honor. He and three others were honored forhaving fought on French soil in World War II to helpliberate that country from German occupation. Since2004, the French government has sought out many ofthe Americans who served in France, and the award wasgiven out by the consul general of France in Miami. Mr.Balsam has also been a recipient of a Purple Heart.

The brothers started The Drs.Andrew and Bradford Ress Healing byMusic Program, which enlists FloridaAtlantic University students to performfree concerts at hospitals, hospices andrehabilitation centers throughout PalmBeach County.

Working on these homes that hadbeen left unattended for over 15months required goggles and safetymasks to protect them from moldand other hazardous materials.When the Broken Sound Women’sClub learned of their endeavors andthe need for supplies, they donated$300 to the camp to purchasesafety masks rated for moldprotection for future volunteers.

As we approach year end the Finance committee has been very busy. Wehave recently evaluated our insurance coverage and reserve requirements asinsurance companies have reduced the exposure they are willing to assumeon country clubs such as ours. As a result we will have to self insure a significant

And finally the Finance Committeehas worked on an amendment to ourby laws regarding the ability of theBoard of Governors to raise moneythrough assessments andborrowings to fund capitalexpenditures and to recover fromnatural disasters. We wil l bepresenting this plan to the Board ofGovernors shortly.

We still have not received the finalpayment for the hurricane damageof last year. There are still somenegotiations going on to finalize theamount we will receive.

Our accounting department has beenbusy with the year end audit andvarious audits from regulatorybodies. The accounting departmenthas received much praise from ourauditors on the status of our recordsand of the cooperation they havegiven the auditors to complete theaudit on a timely basis. As soon asthe audited results are completed forour year end and the financial resultsare completed for the first quarterwe will post these on our web siteand send you an e-mail letting youknow they have been posted.

amount of the potential damagefrom future hurricanes. The FinanceCommittee has recommended to theBoard of Governors a plan to providein advance funds for the potentialliability we may face. After thepresentation of the proposal theBoard tabled the recommendationfor further discussion.

The mortgage on the MainClubhouse is a f loating ratemortgage. As a result of risinginterest rates our monthly paymentshave increased and there is apossibility that during the course ofthe loan that amounts owed to theclub by members that repay themortgage would not be adequate torepay the mortgage when due. TheFinance Committee hasrecommended steps to reduce ourexposure to fluctuating interest rateson this mortgage. By the time youread this we will have accomplishedfixing the interest rate on thismortgage until it is repaid.

In addition we have two mortgageson the East Golf Course and the EastClubhouse. Both of these mortgageshave fixed interest rates for ten years,the longest we could get at the timeof the borrowing. We areinvestigating with our bank ways tofix the interest rates on these loans.

Happy New Year from all of us in Golf Maintenance! We have highexpectations for a great year coming on the heels of a “non”-stormyear in 2006.

The course has been holding up fairly nicely despite the colder weather,cloud cover and the vast amount of play so far this winter season.

The Green Committee has made some allowances this season to helpaccommodate the pace of play issue with some stipulations. As youknow the two hole “cart path only” rotations were pulled to help therangers get the players around in a reasonable fashion. We also decidedto allow carts to the right of the roped area on hole #14, a par three.We have protected all of our par 3’s over the past year of which the turfquality has responded beautifully, so we were very reluctant butunderstanding in doing our part to keep the pace of play.

The stipulat ion forthese allowances thatare being made isthat the “90 degreerule” has tobe observed andenforced. With thecomplaints we hadin 2004 and 2005 onturf qual ity in thefairways with thetiftsport Bermuda andmutated strains from construction, it was the best solution we felt toprotect the improved turf and playing heights of each fairway. The majorityof all courses in the United States have the 90 degree rule in effect yearround so it should not be any surprise here.

If I can answer any questions about what practices we are doing or plansfor the future of the agronomic condition of the course, please do nothesitate to stop me in my rounds or call me at my office.

Old Course News

With the Allianz Championship right around the corner, we have enclosedsome helpful information. There is still a need for volunteers, and applica-tions will be accepted anytime before the tournament. While sponsorshipsales have gone well, there are still opportunities for interested parties.There are openings to participate in the Pro-Ams on Monday, Wednes-day, and Thursday. Please call the Tournament office for details (561)241-GOLF.

The Old Course will be open on Sunday, February 4th for a 9:00 am shot-gun. After the start of the shotgun, the driving range and golf course willbe closed for the remainder of the week and will reopen for regular mem-ber play on Monday, February 12th. Those members with lockers in theMen’s Locker Room will need to have them completely cleaned out byFriday, February 2nd. All members that may play away that week shouldpick up their golf clubs by Sunday, February 4th at 12:00 pm as there willbe no vehicle access to pick them up during the Tournament. There willbe no shuttle service the week of the tournament February 5th -11th.

In that light and with the full backing of theGreen Committee, we have erected two purplemartin houses on holes #7 (to the right in thepreserve area) and to the left of #14 back tee.Thanks to Mr. Terry Baltimore, our Auduboncoordinator for the Old Course, the birds shouldbe flying in soon to take advantage of the newhousing structures.

We also set up several Owl boxes scatteredthroughout isolated sections in the trees a fewstories up. The boxes were donated by Mr.Baltimore to increase our overall population of rapture birds of Prey onsite due to the loss of habitat from the clearing going on along holes twoand three making way for Office Depot’s world headquarters.

and preparation going on for theplayers, the large attendance ex-pected, merchandising, and foodand beverage prep, it was askedof me all the major changes I willbe making for the PGA Tour. I toldthem very little above what we nor-mally do for our membership. Infact, I may have to slow the greensdown for those “old timers” play-ing our course because they maynot be able to handle the speedswe establish for our MemberGuest and Club Championships.Their nerves may get the best ofthem putting downwind toward theback of the green on holes #4 and#7 during one of those tournamentdays.

Nothing like watching your ball dis-appear over the horizon of thegreen on a long putt and end up ina hazard. If the winds get up andthe temperatures drop, it will be avery tough week for everyone play-ing but we anticipate the coursekeeping her character and thecolor to hold up. We do ask yourpatience during this time as we geteverything ready but also hope youenjoy the moments with the Tourplayers and the anticipated thou-sands of spectators.

Will it stand up to the play of someof our greatest Champion’s TourPlayers and the microscope ofmillions of viewers? Will thecourse suffer much from theanticipated large galleries? Whatwill happen after the tournament?

These are some of the questionsbeing posed to us for the Tourevent. Not having a crystal ball topredict the weather and theamount of people attending, weare very optimistic that the coreof the golf course will hold up very

nicely. We will have a plan to cleanand repair everything within ourpower after the tournament andhave set aside a budget to handlethose issues.

It has also been asked of me toremind the members to fix your ballmarks, fill your divots, and abideby the cart rules following the ropelayout. This only makes the coursebetter for each other and alsocomplies with the first rules of theetiquette of golf: LEAVE ITLEAVE ITLEAVE ITLEAVE ITLEAVE ITBETTER THAN YOU FOUND IT!BETTER THAN YOU FOUND IT!BETTER THAN YOU FOUND IT!BETTER THAN YOU FOUND IT!BETTER THAN YOU FOUND IT!

Several members have inquired ofme what are the tufts of grass thatwe see throughout the course,such as the picture below fromhole #6 at the Old Course. Whereyou see areas like this that havecart traffic, the patterned tufts arethe result of deep tine aerificationin the summer. The roots fromthe turf have gone deep breakingthe compacted area below theground several inches. The tufts

you see around the green, ropedareas and many areas around thetee boxes is the natural wayTifsport Bermuda grows, especiallyat the heights we maintain it. Ifwe were to lower the heights tomeet the lowest level of turf, thenwe would have “tight” lies again inwhich you would not have thecushion to hit off of, nor would theturf hold up to extension foot andcart traffic.

We are in thevery midst of what we prepare forduring the rest of the year -weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs,holiday parties, luncheons andtheme dinners. It is a time to haltall action, reflect upon our ‘season’and communicate with ourmembers. It is also an opportunityto step back and review the fruitsof our labor.

It is easy to think of each year asjust another season here atBroken Sound Club with the sameparties over and over again. Broken Sound is proud to spotlightHarry and Katie Sugarman who havestayed physically fit over the years.Harry (90 years old) and Katie (89 yearsold) have been together for 39 years.They decided to get very serious abouttheir fitness levels in their mid-50’s. TheSugarmans exercise at home with basicstrength techniques and by swimmingmore than 20 laps per day. They also partake in many of the classes offeredhere at the club. Harry, who is better known as “the star student” of Roberta’sMen’s Stretch class, is a cancer survivor and hasn’t let his illness distracthim from his exercise regime. Katie has osteoporosis and no cartilage inher hip but doesn’t let it stop her from exercising; she participates in alltypes of classes from Al & Roxanne’s aerobics classes, and Roberta’s stretchand sculpt classes to Monica’s Stretch/Yoga classes. The Sugarmans believestaying active has kept them “healthy, positive and mentally sharp.”

Our season started in November with our membership tea. Approximately80 women enjoyed refreshments, toured a spectacular home, and learneda little more about our accomplishments. Our thanks to Irene Snyder forbeing such a gracious hostess and opening her beautiful home to us.

In December we had our White Elephant Auction at Positano’s Restaurant.Over 100 women enjoyed a great lunch and got into the spirit of bidding.The auction was lively and everyone had a lot of fun bidding on somefabulous gifts, earning the Pap Corp. over $8,000. Congratulations to allof you who made this event possible.

Women’s ClubWow! What a fashion show we had this year! 300 members enjoyedthe fashions , the luncheon, and especially the firefighters who joinedthe other models for the finale! Womens’ Club was proud to honorour local heroes and presented them with a check for $1000 towardthe Boca Raton Firefighters and Paramedics Benevolent Fund.
