General Manager’s Message
Dear Members,
In my last letter to you, I laid out our plansfrom when we received our certificate ofoccupancy. We have followed those plansand have been able to achieve the goals inthe time frame for you to be able to occupythe building. As I write this letter, the staffin all areas has been working diligently tofinish and furnish the building for our
International Buffet- the opening of our food and beverage service, for which we have over 600 reservations.
As I stated in the last letter, the punch list truly was over 45 pageslong but has dwindled to less than 30 pages and will takeapproximately two months to complete from the CO date. Aseach day passes, the Member suggestion list increases. Obviously, there are a number of extremely hot issues, such as the LadiesCard rooms, Men’s and Ladies second floor restrooms, thechandelier in the Members Dining Room and the chandelier inthe Vista Foyer.
The majority of the suggestions are decorating items and I canassure you we will be addressing each of these areas. With amove into any new building, there are systems and proceduresthat need to be learned. I do appreciate that we are going to failin areas with Members on an individual basis because their issuesmay not be taken care of right away. It is not from the lack ofattention to their issue, it is from our inability to take care of itright now due to the fact that the tools we need have not been setup yet or have been ordered and not received. e.g. - our in-housetelephones for Member convenience are not up and running andcomputer systems are only 65% up and running.
In order to do everything, we need to finish the building first, finish the decorating as it was ordered and then make the necessarychanges once this has been accomplished. Trying to make changesbefore the planned items are complete would create so muchconfusion.
I know you appreciate this major undertaking and it will all becompleted soon. Until then, I beg your patience through thenext few weeks.

From The Finance Committee
Revenues for the two month period ending November 30, 2004 equal2.8 million dollars, which is right on budget. Our expenses are belowbudget, primarily in payroll. This is partially due to the delay of theinternational employee arrival and the use of our labor to clean upthe damage caused by the two hurricanes. In addition manymaintenance items were delayed until later in the year also because ofthe cleanup of the depris from the hurricanes.
The two month’s profit before depreciation was approximately$400,000. However there is $383,000 of emergency hurricane relatedcosts not deducted from the profit, pending settlement of our insuranceclaim.
We have retained an excellent independent adjuster to assistmanagement in the settlement of our claim and we should know theexact amount of our out of pocket cost in the next several months. The club and CMA. are working closely together to settle our claim.
Because of the hurricanes, the completion of the clubhouse, therelocation of almost every department and the late arrival of ourinternational staff, we expect it will take until December 31, 2004 forour financial statements to accurately reflect the financial performanceof the club.
The Accounting Department is now located in the clubhouse. Theentrance is the door located by the East parking lot.
We would like to remind you of our credit and collection policies:All Club billings including assessments are due no later than the endof the month the bill is mailed.
All club billings are considered delinquent if not received by the 1st
day of the month following the month in which the bill is mailed.Delinquent amounts will be subject to a 1.5% monthly interest chargefrom the 1st day the amount is delinquent until paid in full.
Please address any questions regarding financial matters in writing ore-mail to the Finance Committee at [email protected]

Tip from the Pro“Letting The Ball Get In The Way Of Your Swing”One very effective drill in perfecting your swing is to let the ball ‘get in yourway’ as you swing toward the target. In other words, you let the ball get hitbecause it was sitting there in the way of your swing, not because you wereswinging at it.
This drill shows why many people have better practice swings than actualswings where a ball is involved. Without a ball it is easier to swing through, yet this is the very motion that is needed when perfecting your swing.
A key in helping correct this tendency is to learn how to separate the opticaleye from the ‘mind’s eye’. The optical eye sees where the ball is sitting, whilethe mind’s eye sees the ball sailing toward its target. Remember, the ball is notthe target, so the key is to avoid being tricked by your optical eye. Instead, letyour mind’s eye swing to your target, which is the fairway or the green. Thisis not to say that you don’t look at the ball at all, but rather to stress that thereis a great difference between looking at the ball and concentrating on it.

Happenings at the Old Course
Let me be among the first to wish each and every one of you a joyousholiday season and a new year filled with health, happiness andprosperity.
Our first open meeting of the season was held November 16th andfor those of you not present we distributed a questionnaire on variousaspects of the Old Course operations. The results will be sent to youas soon as possible after we receive them.
The golf course was overseeded in November and it is now turning alovely shade of green. The fairways and rough are growing in moreand more every day and the course should be in excellent shape forthe season. We all must remember that the golf course is still not oneyear old yet and is in its formative stage. Plantings are being addeddaily and we do have a long range plan for tree plantings that is beingadhered to. The greens are being rolled, are in superb condition andwere rolling at a speed of 10+ on the stempmeter when checked lastweek. Air conditioners and automatic on/off lighting have beeninstalled in the new bathrooms.
Our Clubhouse is on schedule and on budget. The roof is closed inand work is starting on the interior as I write this column. We haveincurred a delay in receiving the roof tiles (as has most of Florida)but that will not delay the project. We are in the process of workingout an arrangement with the City of Boca Raton that will enable us toopen the pro shop and locker areas of the Clubhouse in April whilethe bar and dining area is still being worked on. In this manner we canremove the temporary facilities, store our beautiful new golf carts inthe basement of the building and not delay the Certificate ofOccupancy once the entire building is completed.
The year 2005 will be an exciting one for every Member of BrokenSound. It will mark the first year in over three (3) years that there willbe no major construction being done at the club. It will then be timefor us to enjoy the facilities that so many have worked so hard andhave waited so long for.

Golf MaintenanceWe are several weeks into the “South Florida” season now and mytransition is almost complete as my family will be moving down fromNorthern Virginia after five months of living in separate households.
Many friends and work colleagues from around the country are askingwhy we made the decision to return to Florida once again. To thosethat live in Michigan or Idaho, it is a “no’brainer” because of theweather. The many friends and relatives in Florida are a little moreperplexed by the decision due to increased traffic, expansive buildingand property values, at minimum, doubling in the last three years. The answer is never simple, but for my family it is returning homeagain to enjoy the outdoors, the weather and to give those othersfrom around the country a place to visit when they have enough oftheir own back yard. For myself, even though I had several excellentoffers from around the world, I saw a challenging opportunity in theBroken Sound golf courses, that they could be more than they were.To beautify the creation of the design, to define the limits of thegame and to enhance the quality that is the vision desired here, I knewwe could make a difference for the betterment of the membership.
As a team we try to overcome adversity, such as two hurricanes, thatnecessitates a sound program and teamwork with a sense of urgencyon our part. However, it also requires some patience from the Members asa whole, as well. It takes time to recuperate from what we have beenthrough, but we are up to the challenge and we feel we have made
some great strides to thateffect. The landscape bedsare being redefined currentlyto bring some of thatbeautification back to theClub. The greens and tees
have improved immensely fromwhere they were in August. Itwill only get better as long aswe have sunshine and a littlemore warm weather andcooperation with traffic controlfrom the carts.
My crew and I will not be resting on our laurels as we have a broadscope to enhance both courses to their full potential. That includesnew drainage, especially the Club Course, and expanding our roll withthe International Audubon Society where we intend to become fullycertified in the near future. This is a legacy of commitment we owe toour children and future generations to come.
If any of you have questions about what we are doing or a technicalquestion about warm season grasses , please feel free to contact me at561.997.7793 to set up an appointment or leave a message. From mycrew and my family, I want to take the time to wish everyone a blessedHoliday Season and hope for new aspirations in the New Year.
