President’s Message

Fellow Members of Broken Sound:

As we embark on a new fiscal year, the Board ofGovernors is very mindful of the fiduciaryresponsibilities with which it has been charged. Asevidenced by the recent dues structure, with theexception of the Old Course dues, the club was ableto stabilize its expenses and instituted a verymoderate increase of $200.00 per year. The OldCourse increase reflects the expenses associated with

the new clubhouse. The Old Course dues, too, will be stabilized as managementgains the practical experience of managing the building and the restaurantoperations.

For the past four years, the club has undergone capital improvements well inexcess of 30 million dollars. The last project, the Old Course clubhouse, isnow in full operation. That does not mean the Board is going on leave. Amongthe daily interaction with members about the cold steaks, wet fairways, furniture misplacements, bathroom colors, tennis guest privileges, cart fees, card room noise levels, front entrance (a CMA issue) etc., the Board is evercognizant of its duty to institute policies that benefit the club as a whole.

During the second week of October, I was honored to be invited by one ofour neighboring clubs to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony of their newFitness/Spa building. It is a beautiful facility with all the necessary equipments, spa and treatment rooms for the most discerning health and beauty enthusiasts. But what caught my attention the most was the elaborate facilities they havecreated for the young. Does Broken Sound need similar facilities to attractmembers with young children and grandchildren? We will examine this andother issues continuously to ensure our competitiveness in providing thenecessary facilities for our members and their families. Ultimately a soundclub infrastructure provides protection of our home values.

I wish all the members and their families a safe and healthy fall season.

Respectfully,

Franklin LohPresident

From The Finance Committee

The Club has begun its new fiscal year on October 1, 2005. As a result ofpublishing time constraints, the financial information contained in thisissue is current only through August. However if you go to the Club’swebsite you will find the year end financial results and commentary.

September 30, 2005 was the official end of our construction project at themain clubhouse. As a consequence of the end of the construction periodand as provided for in the Club’s documents, effective October 1, 2005,upon sale of a Club membership, Equity Plus will no longer be refundedat 100%. Equity Plus will now be combined with Equity and will berefunded at the normal 80%.

This new year one of the main focuses of the Finance Committee will bethe building of the Club’s financial assets that began last year. With theend of our construction projects, the beginning of initiation fees for newmembers and the combination of Equity Plus with Member’s equity, theClub has the opportunity to accumulate funds that can be used for capitalprojects, thus lessening the need, not eliminating the need, to assessmembers for the purchase of equipment, building projects, majormaintenance or emergency purposes. As the year progresses we will keepyou informed of our progress.

The financial results for the eleven months ended August 31, 2005 continueto be positive. Net Operating Income for the eleven months ended August31, 2005 was $732,000 versus a budgeted Net Operating Income of$119,000, a positive variance of $613,000.

As mentioned in the prior issue, Working Capital continues to improve.By the time you read this, the planned procedures to segregate funds thatwill be necessary to fund capital projects in the future and to repay bankloans will have been put in place.

Please address any questions regarding financial matters to the FinanceCommittee at [email protected] or send a letterto the Finance Committee at the Broken Sound Club.

· Please get back to using the computer for your tee timerequests, as now there is less chance of walk-up time. Also, please make sure the pro shop receives the correct names of thefoursome so that we can better serve you.

· We have spike-friendly carpets in the dining room, lockerrooms and pro shop. However, we request the members usethe shoe cleaners provided at the entranceways.

· Golf cart traffic policies must be adhered to at all times. Cartsmust be parked on paths around the greens.

· Please remember our guest policy. No guests before 11:00 amon weekends and holidays (excludes house guests).

· Please check schedule for upcoming events.

· Surf the web for news and activities.

Please call myself or my staff for any of your needs.

John SkafDirector of Golf, Old Course

Maintenance Joseph Hubbard, Director of Golf MaintenanceHopes and expectations abound for the “new” Old Course this season aswe head into the holiday months at Broken Sound.

We have prepared the golf course as per your requests from last season byraising the heights on the rough and fairways. This will better protect thegolf course for high cart traffic and give the players the ability to havesome “cush” to hit the soft shots into the greens.

The greens are maturing very nicelyin their second year and will onlyget better with time. The greenspeeds will be dependant on theweather, but our goal is to keepthem from a 10 to 11 stimpmeterreading throughout the season.

Back In The SwingWelcome back to Broken Sound and sunny Boca Raton.

I hope all of you, who either traveled for the summer or stayed here andweathered the humidity, are ready to get back in the SWING of things hereat Broken Sound.

During the summer, your greens keepers, under the watchful eye of JoeHubbard, performed some rather miraculous transitions that we’re all goingto enjoy. The fairways are in great shape, and the greens are really beginningto run true.

The new plantings are beginning to fill in and Joe promises us that moreplants and shrubs are coming. He has told me we can expect a great dealmore color around the course in the coming year.

Your Golf Committee, together with Scott Feller and his crew, has beenworking hard to help make this year’s golfing experience a lot of fun.

See you all soon, and have a great time this season.

Ira SalkChairman, Golf Committee

Happenings At The Old Course

It’s been a busy and productive summer at the Old Course. Those of youreturning after a wonderful summer I’m sure were excited and pleased withthe excellent condition of our golf course and the beautiful clubhouse thatnow serves our needs. The clubhouse is going through final stages ofcompletion and you will continue to see positive improvements in décorand function.

The major objective of the Old Course Committee this year will be to focuson the financial aspects of the Old Course. Creative thinking will be necessaryas we seek to increase revenues, curtail expenditures and stabilize dues. Yourinput is important and I encourage you to communicate with Old CourseCommittee members and the Board of Governors to give your opinions asto what is best for the Old Course.

Have a great season,

Dr. Richard GreeneChairman, Old Course Committee

These orchids along the rough on hole #8provide a beauty all their own.

Flowers along hole #4 at the Club Course. There isalways time for golf, but it is a rare moment to takethe time and smell the flowers such as the Hibiscusnear the tee boxes.

Maintenance Club CourseThis will be a new golf year for us all this year aswe have taken the correct step to not overseedthe golf course for the long term overall quality. We can only hope mother nature is kind to usand everyone has an enjoyable year playing thegame we all love to be frustrated with.

As we get into the high traffic days you willcontinue to notice that we will have the two holeclosures (not including the par 3’s closures)implemented in September throughout theseason. The 90-degree rule will be in effect yeararound. This was the consensus to help reducethe wear and tear on the turf during the peakplaying months. There will be days when thetemperatures will drop and we need to keep cartson the paths, regardless if it is wet or not, toprotect the Bermuda grass in the fairways andrough. It may feel warmer than New Englandbut the grass down here actually quits growingand repairing itself when the soil temperature getsbelow 64 degrees Fahrenheit.

We hope you will find the changes in grassplantings, addition of coquina beds, new sandtoppings in the bunkers and key trees to yourliking. Our hopes are always to keep improvingthe playability, the aesthetics and overallpresentation of the golf course everyday for ourmembers. It is a long-term commitment but weare focused on the tasks needed to make BrokenSound one of the elite in South Florida.

Fitness Elements & Tests Performed· Cardiovascular endurance- bike test or a treadmill test (heart health)· Muscular strength/endurance- sit-up test (core strength), push-up test (upper body

strength)· Flexibility- sit and reach test (lower back and hamstring flexibility)· Body composition- skin fold caliper (% of body fat), Body Mass Index (weight/height) &

waist to hip ratio (where you carry your weight).

Most health-related fitness tests have an established “healthy fitness zone.” Ifyour score lands in that zone or above that zone, it is an indicator that you haveattained minimal level of fitness needed to lessen the risks of diseases such as:Diabetes - High blood pressure - Coronary heart disease - Stroke

So what are you waiting for? Call the fitness centerand schedule anappointment nowand find out yourcurrent fitness status!Call Colleen orKathy 561-241-6898
