MEMBERSHIPNEWSLETTER

AUGUST 2015

Dear Members,Your FSCC team is pleased to present “The Connection”, our rebranded, reinvigorated newsletter! This new de-sign will keep our members better informed and fully involved with upcoming events. It also oers insight into all areas of the Club such as golf, tennis, tness, children, and juniors programs. We look forward to hearing your continuing comments on how we can further improve “The Connection”.

Our goal is to create enjoyment and excitement at FSCC. To help us achieve this goal, we have recon-vened the Social Committee. This group is giving the sta member input on how we can further invigorate and improve FSCC with creative, exciting, fresh ac-tivities. Please join me in thanking Ebony Miller, Dr. Amir Daoud, Jack Winter, John Reynaud, Greg Porter, Bob Helmick, Leah Ward, Dr. Brad Finkbiner, and Patty Nelson for their generosity in volunteering their time, energy, and ideas. The committee’s main goal is to listen to member requests and nd ways to fulll them. In our kicko meeting, our agenda started with the need for a swimming instructor. We quickly contracted a qualied, energetic individual capable of teaching all ages. The committee also suggested adding craft beers to our bar menu, and so we ordered three new craft beers for our members to enjoy. You asked and we responded!

FSCC’s membership spans generations, which presents a unique opportunity to create a wide array of activ-ities for all to enjoy! Keep your eyes open for future Committee projects this fall.

FSCC is committed to developing into one of Tampa Bay’s premier country clubs. We take tremendous pride in our facilities, programs, functions and events. Last month, we hosted successful MGA and tennis events on the 4th of July, we continued our cultural practices toward course improvement, invested in state of the art culinary equipment, initiated irrigation improvements on the tennis courts, and completed construction of new bunkers surrounding the #14 green complex and around the new chipping bunker. During the month of August, we will continue facility improvements, service oerings, and increased events! Planning is underway for the new cart paths, roof repair has commenced to address the leaks (with ceil-ing tile replacement to follow), and a tennis stringing machine is on the way to the tennis hut. Fun and ac-tivities include Guest Golf Day on the 19th, oering all

1

day tee times! Free Adult Tennis Tryout day is planned for August 31st. A Wine Tasting is planned for August 12th at 6:30 pm and weekly Trivia Nights kick o on Wednesday, August 5th at 7pm! Please join us to have some fun and show o your trivia knowledge! And yes, there will be fabulous prizes for the winners!

In other news: FSCC will host an open house in late September for the Feather Sound, Southwest Tampa and St. Petersburg communities, inviting residents into our facility to experience our club. We hope they’ll try our food, view the course and meet our sta. We are condent the local community will be inspired, but we’d love your help! As members, you are Club am-bassadors. Please commit to spreading the word that FSCC is back and better than ever! To help you with this new responsibility, we’re oering rewards when you get involved. During the month of August, send us the name and contact information of a friend, family member, or business partner who may be interested in becoming a member. That’s all you have to do! The member who submits the most amount of referrals that result in new membership will win 2 months of FREE DUES. Second place will receive a $200 food and beverage credit in gratitude. Send your list to Tara at [email protected] today to enter today.

Thank you for your continued support as we move in a new, positive direction. Personally, I would like to thank each member who has taken their time to welcome me to the club and to oer their valuable experience and insight - your energy and enthusiasm are contagious! I look forward to meeting and getting to know each of you as we embark on this journey together. Enjoy your August, everybody.

With gratitude,Tara IsaacDirector of Operations(727) [email protected]

With over 60% of your strokes coming from inside 100 yards, it is essential that you spend a proportionate amount of time on your short game as you practice. I recommend nding a system that works for you.

Summertime is upon us! We are in full swing with cultural practices and projects on the golf course. I am often asked why we must perform these practices, and one of the best ways I can explain it is by saying, “we are growing a crop of bermudagrass”. Unlike farmers who get to till their elds to correct soil structure problems, we have a small window during the year (typically summer) to perform best manage-ment practices. Aerication, verticutting, and topdressing are typically done to maintain or modify the root zone of the playing surface.

The benets? These practices relieve compaction, allow for water percolation and drainage, help fertilizer reach the plants roots, release gases from the root zone, and stimu-late environmental conditions which promote healthy soil microbes to decompose thatch. Thatch is a layer of living and dead organic matter that develops between the zone of green vegetation and soil surface. If not managed properly, there could be problems with increased disease pressure, thin stands of grass, and increased diculty for the roots to penetrate the thatch layer to establish in the soil.

Course Construction Projects

I am pleased to say we have completed construction of new bunkers surrounding the #14 green complex and around the new chipping bunker. You can see from the pictures below that these bunkers will make the hole more challenging and aesthetically pleasing.

We hope everyone is having a great summer and we look forward to everyone enjoying the results from our cultural practices. As always we ask that everyone do their part by repairing ball marks and lling divots.

Kind Regards,

MIke Strube, Golf Course Superintendent

One example of a system I teach my students is a 3-point back swing. It consists of a Hip High Swing, a 3/4 Swing, and Full Swing. This 3-point back swing gives you three distances with each wedge. If you carry three wedges (i.e. 52 Degree, 56 Degree and 60 Degree), you eectively have nine dierent yardages to choose from.

Spend some time on the practice tee learning your distances with each point of your backswing! Once you learn your yardages, you will gain condence in your distance control on the golf course.

See you on the Practice Tee!
