Repairing Divots - Are You Doing It TheRight Way?by the Green Section USGA Staff

Q: There seems to be confusion among themembership about how much divot mixshould be used to fill fairway divots. Is therea proper amount? (Every Club USA)

A: The proper amount of divot mix (usuallysand or a mixture comprised primarily of sand) is surprisingly small because it should beonly the amount needed to replace the soil that was removed. Filling divot level higher thanthe existing playing surface, i.e. turfgrass canopy, is overfilling. Not only is this a waste ofdivot mix, but the extra sand will slow turfgrass recovery because seedlings and/or lateralregenerative growth of surrounding vegetation will be scalped by mowers. This leads to thesecond problem when divots are overfilled because sand particles dull and damage mowerblades.

The Broken Sound Club, a 36-holeprestigious members’ club in Boca Raton,Florida, has hosted the PGA Senior TourAllianz Championship since 2007 andexcels at waste reduction andmanagement, according to GEO.

“They have a fantastic community-basedgreen waste recycling, composting, andresource reduction initiative,” says GEO’sSmith.

An aggressive composting programmakes use of grass clippings and foodwaste from the property and surroundingcommunity and the resulting nutrient-richcompost is used to help fertilize fairwaysand roughs, a measure that can helpreduce the use of manufactured fertilizers.

With the winter monthsbehind us and summerfast approaching, it ’shard to believe yetanother South Floridaseason is winding down.

The month of March wasfilled with events for themen, ladies and couples. The Club Championship

was held the first two weekends in March.Congratulations go out to all the flight winnerswhich included, Ron Murstein (ChampionshipFlight), Dr. Steven Rindley (1st Flight), Dr. EliotSlater (2nd Flight), Stan Levine (3rd Flight),Bonnie Rappaport (Ladies Championship Flight)and Janet Edelstein (Ladies First Flight).

The Old Course again was a proud host to theannual A Charity Challenge event, held on March11th. With a score of 67, the 1st place grosswinners of the first flight were Howard David,Burt Bines, Ron Alexander & Gary Cohen. The1st place net winners of the first flight had a scoreof 52 and consisted of Michael Mendelsohn,Peter Stein, Joel Horowitz & Robert Weinblatt. With a score of 73, the second flight winninggross team was Chipp & Vicki Adams along withJohn & Judy Heller. The second flight winningnet team had a score of 52 and belonged toLouis & Paula Glazier and Rick & Arlene Selik.Don Pressman, Jerry Robbins, Ronald Curwin& Sidney Cohen shot a gross score of 83 andwon the third flight. The net winning score of52 won the third flight and was shot by ElisaGrabois, Linda Shapiro, Gwen Kamikow andWendy Goldberg.

Both the Men’s and Women’s Member Guestswere held in March. The Men’s was on the 21st

and consisted of a full field. There were nineflights in total with four place winners in eachflight. The overall total net point winners werethe team of Larry Schwartz & Larry Barenbaum. All players were treated to a day that featured amagician, displaying his amazing tricks and ahelicopter golf ball drop onto the 18th green. It’sa great event that continues to receive welldeserved support from the membership.

PROJECTS:CLUB COURSE: We will undertake taking somesand off the bunker faces around the green sidetraps and more sand, maybe an inch, out of thefairway bunkers to give a firmer lie for playability. This does not guarantee that with a soft shotwith spin you will not plug but the percentageswill decrease.

Composting of several key fairways that haveheavy sand and/or rock base will get at leastone full application.

OLD COURSE: We have compiled a list of teetops in need of leveling, addition of good mix inthe surface and tees in need of total sodreplacement or expansion. This is all based onfinances and will be discussed very shortly. Weare adding a few trees we have acquired fromthe Main Club House and will continue to add afew here and there as they become available.

Joe Hubbard, CGCSSummer is here andmany of you are too.Welcome to the time ofthe year when theBermuda grass growsthrough the night and dayto keep our crews mowingnonstop. As we mow wewill try our best to stay on

the edging of the bunkers, cart paths, sprinklerheads and keeping the ornamental beds asweed free as we can. It is our busiest time ofthe year agronomically so you throw in threeaerifications apiece, some 25 tournaments, afew projects such as composting, rain stormsand the time of the year when the crew has toschedule their vacations, we are HOPPING!

The Women’s Member Guest was held on the24th and this year’s motif was that of Scottishheritage. This “Classy Lassy” theme had thegolf professional staff in kilts, the golf coursewith specially made Scottish flags and aClubhouse ensemble of Scottish attire. In the“Murfield Flight”, the event featured 1st placegross winners of Piero Martineau, HeleneSimard, Elen Gendreau & Chantal Dubois. Tennis

By Greg Wheaton, Director of Tennis

Learnin’ With VernonTips & strategies for fun and successful tennis!Playing Against Two Back

In doubles if you are playingagainst two players that stayat the baseline, most likelythey are back because of youraggressive nature or becausethey are not comfortable atthe net. When playing against

the two back scenario, here are a few strategies tothink about:

1. Hit the ball short - Hitting the ball short forces the player(s)to come to the net and puts them in an awkward area of thecourt. After hitting the ball short to bring them in, hit a lob. Thisis a very effective strategy, and will keep them off balance.

2. Play the ball deep down the middle, if hitting the ball shortdoesn’t work. Doing so will put your opponents in more of adefensive posture because the ball is deep and they will haveto decide who will return the ball and will struggle to keep theball away from the net player on your side.

3. Take control of the net – Putting your team in acommanding position at the net will put you in optimum positionto finish the point. The open part of the opponents’ court isshort, so while at the net, hit the ball short or hit angle volleyswhen presented with the opportunity to do so.

Broken Sound InvitationalCongratulations to Carlos Gomez-Diaz & BruceKurtz who defeated Greg Wheaton & HoracioRearte 6-3, 6-4 in the finals of the Broken SoundInvitational. A special thanks to all the pros whocompeted in the event.

Golf Fitness to HelpAvoid Back Pain

One of the most commonailments suffered bygolfers is low back pain.

There are a number ofpotential causes for thisincluding poor posture, faulty swing mechanics, ill-

fitting equipment, muscle imbalances in thebody, or just plain over-use. Golf is a physicallydemanding sport and the truth is that mostpeople who golf will likely feel soreness at timesin their lower back. If you are suffering from backpain and want to continue to play golf, it is highlyrecommended that you seek a fitnessprofessional. They will be able to assist you incorrecting your physical limitations. Here atBroken Sound Club, our trainers can specificallycater to our golfers by applying scientificallyproven assessment tools and corrective

exercises, developed by the Titleist PerformanceInstitute, to help fix your physical limitations.

Here are a few ideas that may help prevent oralleviate your low back pain.

Strengthen your core – It is not uncommon forpeople to be weak or have muscle imbalancesin this area. Be sure to include exercises thattarget all of the abdominal, low back, and gluteusmuscles.

Warm-up – The golf swing is a very explosivemovement that can put extra stress on jointsand muscles if they are not ready for action. Dosome dynamic stretching and take some easyswings to help loosen up before you practice orplay.

Stretch – Having enough muscle flexibility andjoint mobility to execute the golf swing properlyis essential. Just 5-10 minutes of static stretchingevery day can make a world of difference.

Enjoy your next round!

We have come to the endof another satisfying andprofitable season.

Our general meetingswere well received.Particularly well attendedwere the US HolocaustMemorial speakers on“Auschwitz through theLens of the SS”. DrBernard Wollschlagerwowed us with revelationsabout his life growing up

in a Nazi home, in his book “A German Life”.Carl Rose gave us pause to think of America’sfuture with “America Be Warned: Jihad and theQuest for World Domination”. A documentaryof Cantors was shown and a photo essay onIsrael’s history was presented. Our Lunch andLearns were educational and entertaining. It isespecially rewarding to have the opportunity todiscuss the ideas presented over a wonderfulBroken Sound lunch. Thank you to SheilaGarber “Jews and the Black Death”, MarilynLaber “Liberty Heights”, Janet Cimorelli “Howto Eat a Healthy Diet”, Mona Morris “JewishGenealogy”. We are certainly lucky to have somany talented women as members of BrokenSound Hadassah. Again, our programcommittee headed by Rose Smith did a greatjob.

Fundraising is the lifeblood of our organizationand without these events and the women andmen who sustain us we could not support theimportant projects at home and in Israel. Ourtwo card parties are always fun and a hugefinancial success. Thank you to Sandy Gaynor,

Susan Slinger, Iris Malen, Ruth Levy-Platt,chairs Sheila and Paul Garber, Caryle and IraGulker, Arlene Goldman, Judy Needle, EileenBreakstone, Paula Gluckman, Elaine Schwab,Jane Sonenshein, and Phyllis Meranus. TheProgressive Dinner was a culinary delight.Hosts were Phyllis and Arthur Meranus, Caryleand Ira Gulker, Elaine and Hersh Aronberg.Sandy and Suzie have been the overallfundraising VPs. They have great bounce, interest, energy and ideas.

We cannot exist without the valuable assistanceof Phyllis Greenblatt and Debra Steinart, twopeople who, year after year, have sold cards, certificates, and JNF trees for us. They areprompt and efficient. You would be surprisedhow $3.50 or $10 adds up for the year to helpfill our coffers. We are fortunate to have threedetail persons in Joyce Weiner, recordingsecretary, Cecily Feldman, bulletin editor, andEvy Udell, recording administrator, who washonored this year as Broken Sound’s Womanof Valor. We thank them also for many years ofservice.

Our leadership team was spearheaded by ourvery able President, Susette Rabinowitz, who, like Truman, said many times “the buck stopshere”. We thank Susette for three years ofdiligence and dedication to the ideals ofHadassah and we know that she will continueto add her expertise and knowledge to help usimprove.

We look forward to next season and thank theBoard for the confidence you have in us as yournew Presidents.
