THE City of Cape Town’s R50million Non-Motorised

Transport (NMT) project willsoon be rolled out across the city.

On Thursday 16 February, theCity of Cape Town’s Mayoral Com-mittee Member for Transport,Roads and Stormwater, CouncillorBrett Herron, visited a number ofsites across Cape Town for an up-date on other elements of the sys-tem.

There are 19 projects in either de-sign, tender or construction phasesacross Cape Town, with MilitaryRoad in Retreat and Vrygrond fall-ing under the design stage of theproject.

Concert Boulevard in Retreat,and De Waal and Victoria Roads’NMT, from Grassy Park to Plum-stead’s employment areas, are un-der construction.

The new NMT project will be noordinarywalkwayor cycle lane, butwill also have features such asbenches, speed humps, raised pe-destrian tables, signage, landscap-ing, bollards and cycle racks.

Some other sites include AlbertRoad from Liesbeeck Parkway tothe existing NMT facility in Adder-ley Street in the CBD, RondeboschCommon, Nantes Park in Athlone,and Merrydale Road in Mitchell’sPlain.

Ward Councillor Jan Burger saidplans for the NMT projects weresubmitted in 2006. He was very ex-

cited to see the project unfolding.“This is a really big deal for the

area, becausenowcyclistswill havetheir own dedicated lanes and willbe able to travel between areas andmost importantly, they will be ableto do it safely,” says Burger.

According to Herron, the visionof the project is to create a cycle andpedestrian friendly city “with awell-connected network of NMT in-frastructure”, which would providethe opportunity to walk, cycle orskateboard as far as you like on“safe, dedicated lanes”.

“The city was recognised in Janu-ary at the Sustainable TransportAwards in the USA for its commit-ment to building an integrated pub-lic transport system and today wecan see how people will be able towalk, cycle or take public transportto wherever they want to go,” saysHerron. He explained that it is ofvital importance to introduce thissustainable transport system to al-low people from Cape Town to haveeasy access to these sort of facili-ties. The cycling lanes will be segre-gated from the rest of the road, re-ducing conflict between motoristand cyclist.

“We are looking to introduce safeinfrastructures to ensure that eve-rybody using these lanes will betravelling safely,” says Herron.

Dr Gina Ziervogel, senior lectur-er at the Department of Environ-mental and Geographical Sciencesat the University of Cape Town, be-lieves that the project is a “fantasticidea”.

She explained that urban areasare more prone to producing greenhouse gases due to the amount ofcars on the road.

“There have always been prob-lems with the planning aroundtransport routes within the city, soit’s better to plan routes that doesnot emit green house gases,” saysZiervogel.

“There is a need for these projectswithin the City of Cape Town andit’s too early to say whether it willbe sustained, but the idea is fantas-tic and should be encouraged inmore areas,” Ziervogel added.

Cyclist from the Retreat andGrassy Park areas were over-whelmed by the news of a designat-ed cycle lane.

Ashraf Abrahams, 39, is dedicat-

ed to cycling and competes everyyear in the Cape Argus Cycle Tour.He also enjoys cycling from hishome to Cape Town and back.

“I don’t do it regularly, becausesafety is always an issue and today,people knock you off your bicycleand drive away. These concerns asa cyclist are always on one’s mindand if this project will take thoseconcerns away, it should be done assoon as possible,” says the deter-mined Abrahams.

Another cyclist from Retreat,who has dreams of competing in thecoveted Tour De France one day,fears Cape Town’s roads, but willnot stop until his dream has becomea reality.

George Williamson has been cy-cling for the past 22 years, tracking

down the most challenging routesaround Cape Town, but always feltthat roads were not safe enough tocycle on.

“I’ve been knocked down alreadyand that left me shaken because Istruggled to get back on the road infear of being knocked down again.So if there is a project that couldhelp me get closer to that dream ofmine, then it should get started,”Williamson laughed.

“Through this NMT project, cy-clists will be able to feel a lot saferon the roads,” Councillor Burgeradded.

The minstrel season has come and goneTAURIQ HASSEN

THE minstrel season might have comeand gone in a flash, but it produced manyhighs and lows, resulting in a gloriousfinale.

People’s Post takes a look at the minstrelseason that was.

. The season got off to a positive start,when minstrel associations and leaders, ne-gotiated terms with members of the Provin-cial Government and City of Cape Town.The article, “Minstrels work it out with City(11 October 2011)”, highlighted the meetingheld between representatives from eachparty, which had an independent mediatorin retired Constitutional Court judge, KateO’Reagan.

The negotiations dealt mainly with the re-turn of the annual Cape Minstrel Carnival,which wends its way through the historicBo-Kaap, as well as permission to hold theevent on the second day of January from2012 onwards.

. Minstrel leaders remained optimistic

about the end-of-year celebrations – “Capeminstrel battle continues (1 November2011),” – with Executive Mayor Patricia deLille remaining adamant that she was“firmly committed to making the Cape Min-strel annual Carnival an event that all peo-ple of Cape Town can be proud of”.

Later that month the two parties agreedthat all minstrel leaders sign a code of con-duct.

The article, “The return of the minstrels(15 November 2011),” saw minstrels beinggiven permission to march along their oldroutes, as well as hosting the “Tweede NuweJaar” celebrations on 2 January.

Word spread quickly about the old battle-ground being back on the cards, whichprompted several minstrel troupes to uptheir gameandgiveCapeTownagood show.

. The season got off to a slow start, whenthe annual “Tweede Nuwe Jaar” celebra-tions started five hours later than sched-uled.

“And the beat goes on (17 January),” high-lighted the slow start to the season, whichsaw 40 000 troupe members and 80 000 spec-

tators participating in the event.As the weeks went by, minstrel teams

slugged it out on the Athlone and Vygiesk-raal Stadiums, competing in items such asCoon Song, Juvenile Combined Chorus,Adult Sentimental, Best Dress and a stringof other singing and performance items. Atthe end of the day, there could only be onewinner.

. At Vygieskraal Stadium, the FabulousSeawind Entertainers walked away aschampions, ahead of the 25th Anniversarynext year, bringing much excitement toone of Cape Town’s oldest troupes. Theyclaimed 12 trophies in the build-up to theirHighest Points trophy.

In the Super League final held at AthloneStadium – with most of the big names par-ticipating – defending champions SantamDistrict Six Entertainers managed to suc-cessfully defend their title, walking awayas “Carnival Kings”.

The article, “Carnival Kings yet again (14February)”, focused on the team’s 13 tro-phies that they won during the competi-tion.

Family loses all in fireTAURIQ HASSEN

A LAVENDER HILL family is left puzzledby the cause of a fire that gutted theirhome yesterday.

At approximately 09:30, passersby noticedsmoke fouring from the roof of the house andheard children screaming at the back.

When People’s Post arrived on the scene,fire rescue workers had managed to put outthe fire, with residents on the roof armedwith buckets of water assisting the rescueworkers. Carlo Moses, a Lavender Hill resi-dent, rushed to the back, where he kicked ina back window and attempted to rescue thechildren.

“I couldn’t see anything at the time be-cause the smoke was too thick and there wasa burglar bar on the window; all I heard werethe children screaming,” says Moses.

Owner of the house and community socialworker, Janice Benjamin, was busy workingin the garden when she heard the franticcalls for help.

Benjamin cares for adopted children andregularly receives donations from Pick nPay, which she hands out to the community.

“I have yet to check the damage inside myhouse, but it looks like everything has beenlost and things that I needed, like the chil-dren’s bottles, were all lost in the fire,” saysBenjamin.

She further added that nobody knew howthe fire began. There was much speculation,“but nobody knows the real story”.

“Everybody has ideas, but they just guess-ing and we have to just wait to find out whatstarted the fire,” says Benjamin.

Her son, Heinrich, was asleep at the timebut escaped and later stood in shock outsideas he watched his home go up in flames.

Rescue workers on the scene could notconfirm the cause of the fire and were stillinspecting the house for any faults, but aninvestigation will follow.

Steenberg: Man shot in legSTEENBERG Police are looking for infor-mation about a shooting incident at theweekend.

On Sunday, at approximately 03:00,Steenberg SAPS were called out to RetreatDay Hospital, where staff were treating a26-year-old man who had been shot in theleg.

Warrant Officer Hermanus van Dyk,spokesperson for the Steenberg Police Sta-tion said the victim explained he had beenstanding in Bach Lane, Steenberg, whenthree unknown men came walking up.

“He saw one of the men take out a fire-arm, cock the firearm and start shooting,

and one bullet hit his left leg,” says VanDyk. He ran to Retreat Day Hospital formedical treatment, but was transferred toVictoria Hospital. Police are urging any-body with information to contact WarrantOfficer Hermanus Van Dyk on (021) 702 9001or 071 604 8381.

THEmerryatmosphereat theNarlingres-idence was contagious as friends and fam-ily celebrated the 100th birthday of So-phie Narling (nee Standaar) on Thursday.

Born on 16 February 1912, this mother ofsix, grandmother of seven and great-grand-mother of two is still going strong.

The centenarian is originally from Robert-son, and later moved to Diep River with her

family.The young Sophie worked as a cook and do-

mestic worker, but became a housewife aftershe married Edward Narling, a local pastor.

With the introduction of the Group AreasAct in the 1950s, the Narlings were forced outof their home and relocated to Retreat.

The couple had four daughters and twosons, the eldest of which has already passedon.

Narling was widowed in 2002, when aftermore than 60 years of marriage her husband

died at the age of 89. “I am verylucky that I got to spend somany years with my husbandand that we could grow old to-gether,” the elegant womansays.

The former hockey and ten-nis player describes heryounger self as a tomboy anda lover of all types of sport. Tothis day, she avidly followsrugby and cricket matches onTV.

She credits her lack of badhabits for her longevity. “Nei-ther my husband nor I weredrinkers or smokers andthat’s good for the health. I al-so loved gardening but now Ican’t do it anymore. Not that there’s anythingwrong with me, it’s just plain old age,” shelaughs. Hazel (70), the eldest of the Narlingdaughters, takes care of Sophie and says hermother is still quite active.

She maintains her energy levels by goingto bed as early as 17:00 and waking up at sun-rise.

Narling takes it in her stride that she is notable to do the things she could when she wasyounger, and specifically points out that she

is not being able to scrub her floors.“Now I ask others to help me. I order my

daughter around,” she says with a mischie-vous smile.

Narling celebrated her 100th birthday witha party for friends and family at her home inFirst Avenue on Thursday.

On Sunday a special church service washeld at the Grace Communion InternationalChurch, whereafter a small celebration washeld in the church hall.

UCT and E9 secures campusTHE University of Cape Town (UCT) hassigned a contract with Sukema IntegratedSolutions, responsible for the E9 emergencymobile system to provide all students, staffand family members with access to a dedi-cated E9 helpline, available at the touch ofa button, 24 hours a day.

By simply dialling the number 9 fromtheir mobile phones, users who find them-selves in an emergency situation will beable to transmit their precise location oncampus or anywhere else in South Africa tocampus security, as well as to a pre-selectedfriend or family member. This service al-lows the university to extend and refine itsexisting security infrastructure.

The E9 service is managed using UCT’sexisting CHASE incident management soft-ware (developed by Sukema), which pro-vides a central operations managementplatform from which to log and track all in-cidents. This integrates seamlessly with theE9 service to facilitate an efficient, effectiveresponse and investigation. When thenumber 9 is dialled on one’s cellphone, thecall is logged on the system within secondsand Campus Protection Services’ responsestrategy immediately kicks in after thephysical location of the person in distressis identified.

Roland September cautioned subscribersnot to abuse the system or send hoax alertsas there will be severe action taken if theydo. “When they sign up, they will be able totest the system once at their own expense,but thereafter alerts must strictly be foremergencies. We are able to quickly identifyusers that abuse the system, and will re-move these individuals from the system im-mediately. This is no different from placing

a hoax call to 10111.”E9 is available to regular subscribers at

a cost of R10 per month, but is offered freeto UCT’s more than 25 000 students and 3 000staff. There is a cost of only R5 levied foreach call made to use the system in an emer-gency situation.

UCT’s E9 initiative is sponsored byMMad, a newly launched retail and lifestyleportal that provides on-the-go solutions forthe mobile generation.

Criminals targetcar dealerLILLIAN AMOS

A DIEP River second-hand car salesmanhas been left traumatised after he was hi-jacked and tasered by two men pretend-ing to be potential buyers.

No arrests have been made and police arenow looking for the criminals.

“A case of car-jacking has been opened atthe Diep River Police Station. No one hasbeen arrested yet, but we are still investigat-ing”, says Diep River SAPS spokespersonWarrant Officer Clive Muller.

The victim, who wants to remain anony-mous, sayshehopesnever to be ina situationlike this again.

Themorning started off like anyother. Thecars were washed, shined and ready to belooked at by customers.

The man said he was sitting in his officewhen two men, one in his twenties and an-other in his fifties, stopped in to look at awhite VW Golf at around 9:45 on Saturday 11February.

The two claimed to be father and son andasked if they could have a closer look.

The two men then said they were going toanother dealership down the road. The re-turned 15 minutes later, and asked to go fora test drive.

“Usually I ask the client for an identifica-tion document and only then allow them totake the test drive. But there was somethingsuspicious about the “son”.

I was worried that if I gave him the car hewould mess it up or speed. I was alone at theoffice at the time, so I locked everything upand joined them for a test drive.”

The “father” then got in the drivers seat,with the salesman in the passenger seat andthe “son” in the back.

They made their way down the Main Roadand on to Kendal Road.

He became more suspicious when the“son” swore at the “father” while they weredriving.

“The younger guy asked why he was driv-ing so badly, and he was swearing. I knewsomething wasn't right but then the man inthe back seat pulled out a taser and shockedme.

“The volts going through my body was theworst feeling in the world. It felt like my

whole body was on fire. When he did that Iknew it was a hijacking and knew I had toget out of the situation. I couldn’t move myneck or any other part of my body except myhand.

“The only thought going through my headwas that I had to get the car to stop otherwiseI could end up dead.”

He had been involved in car racing beforehe became a salesman, so he pulled up thehandbrake and the car skidded on to thepavement near the Kendal Road circle.

He said he tried to get the men out of thecar but it was in vain as the younger malekept threatening him with the taser. Theyeventually drove off and the car has not beenrecovered.

The victim said he had never heard ofsomething like this happening with any oth-er saleman. “This has never happened to meor to anyone Iknow.There aremanycar sale-shops in this road and we have made a con-scious decision to be more cautious when go-ing out on test-drives.

“I was terrified when it happened to meand I am still in a bit of shock but I havelearnt my lesson when it comes to test-drives.”

A car salesman (who also does not want tobe named), who works nearby, says hewould’ve had the same fate if it wasn’t for hisgut instinct.

“I was standing in our car lot when the twomen came and looked at a Mini Cooper.

“I told them it had already been sold. WhenI saw them I immediately knew they couldn’tbe trusted; my sixth sense just kicked in.”

Officer Muller if the Diep River police de-partment says: “This is the first incident wehave had in Diep River area where a car salesshop has been targeted. There is not a lot po-lice can do to prevent this type of crime butsalemen can use a strategy to try and curbit. They can maybe just allow one person totake the test-drive. That is the best way, be-cause then you have some type of control andcan react properly when the person is tryingto do a hijacking.”

EIGHTEEN years ago, Raymond Jacobsmade the decision to have a vasectomyas he could not afford to have any morechildren. But almost two decades later,he now has the responsibility of raisinganother baby, and lays the blame for hispredicament at the door of the provin-cial department of health.

Jacobs, a taxi driver, says he plans to suethe state after he became the father of a babygirl, who was born on 13 January.

This is Jacobs’ 11th child.“While I am over the moon to have re-

ceived such a beautiful little girl, I am nowfaced with the difficult task of providing fi-nancially for an unplanned baby, whichcosts a fortune to raise,” the 45-year-oldsays.

“I put my trust in the government facilityto ensure that I don’t have to raise anotherchild. Someone has to take responsibilityfor this, and I don’t think that this happenedthrough any fault of mine.”

Jacobs says he had a vasectomy in 1994at the Heideveld Community Health Centre.

The surgical procedure involves the cut-ting, tying or interruptions of the tubes thatcarry sperm from the testicles so that thesemen no longer contains sperm and con-ception cannot occur.The testicles continueto produce sperm, but they die and are ab-sorbed by the body.

“I never thought I would be in this situa-tion again. My children are all grown andI just cannot afford the financial burden ofraising a baby. I’m not a young man any-more. Both my baby, its mother and me arein a difficult situation because of a fault ofthe department.”

Jacobs is demanding financial compensa-tion from the department to raise his child,as he “would not have been in this situation

if they had done their job”.“They can’t just clap

their hands and make thisdisappear. I am now strug-gling to support a baby Ididn’t even think of hav-ing. Bringing a child intothe world is supposed tobe a blessing, not a stress-ful debacle. Who should betaking responsibility forthis?”

The lawsuit isn’t to en-rich himself, he insists.

“It’s to make sure thatthis baby has the best lifeshe could. I can’t pay for amistake on the depart-ment’s side. I’m not mak-ing any outrageous finan-cial demands – they justneed to make sure thatthey give me enough toprovide her with every-thing she needs.”

Faiza Steyn, spokesper-son for the provincialhealth department, con-firms Jacobs’ vasectomywas performed 18 yearsago.

“His sperm count postvasectomy showed azoo-spermic semen. Mr Jacobs called the facili-ty manager and was advised to have theblood test done. He never came to see thefacility manager after we received the com-plaint the last time,” she says.

“My opinion, he needs to pay for the bloodtest. Vasectomies, like female sterilizations,are not 100% safe. Clients are informed ofthis during the counselling session.”

But Jacobs argues that he did speak to thefacilitymanager, andwasonly offereda freesperm count evaluation.

“I asked for a blood test to confirm pater-nity but I was told on no uncertain termsthat the facility would not be able to do thatfor me. All they offered me was another va-sectomy. Look what happened after the lastone I had,” he says as he cuddles his baby,kitted out in pink from head to toe.

“I will take this matter to court becauseit seems that is the only way to make themsee how determined I am. There is no twoways about it – I want action and for thoseresponsible to be held accountable.”

JOY and laughter was the or-der of the day when pupils,teachers, ex-learners and par-ents celebrated Grassy ParkE.C Primary School’s 100thyear in existence.

On Monday 13 February,Grassy Park Civic was bustlingwith activity, from gum bootdancing to choir song.

School principal BertrandEhrenreich, who’s retiring atthe end of this year, has beenteaching at the school since 1995and believes the school is a bea-con of hope to the communityand surrounding schools.

“We are extremely profession-al but we never forget the hu-

man factor. Our motto is to workhard and to maintain the ethosof caring and sharing for eachother and every learner.”

Another teacher, Diann Adri-aanse, who has been teaching atthe school for almost 29 years,was also a learner at the schooland says it is an honour for herto join the celebrations.

“I am overjoyed to be able tobe part of something of this mag-nitude, it’s great.

“Me and my family moveddown here to Grassy Park fromSimon’s Town because of theGroup Areas Act.

In 1973 I joined Grassy ParkE.C and from there I went toGrassy Park High School, stud-ied, and came right back to myroots.”

The proud teacher beams asshe boasts about the school’shard-working ethics.

“I am so proud, seeing somany students go through myhands. I am teaching old learn-ers’ children.”

Erenreich would like to en-courage the teachers and stu-dents at E.C Primary School tomaintain the loving attitudethat can be found in the class-rooms and the playground.

Asking him about his retire-ment he says, “It is going to bea challenge because I have beeninvolved in teaching for so long,but it gives an opportunity forthe school to progress, for newadventures and new ideas. ButI will still be helping out in fu-ture, if my help is needed.”

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - ASwedish man has been found

alive inside a car that was hiddenfor two months in deep snow insub-zero temperatures.

He survived on nothing but snow.The man was stranded in the car

on December 19, according to theVasterbotten Courier newspaper,and spent the time in a sleeping bagin the car.

He was found off a remote forestroad after passers-by on snowmo-biles raised the alarm. They hadthought they’d found a car wreckbut when they scraped away snowfrom the windows saw weak move-ment inside.

Temperatures in the north ofSweden have dropped to -30C in re-cent weeks. Police said the absenceof any disturbance around the carmade the survivor’s account credi-ble.

He is being treated in hospital

where his condition was describedas “well, under the circumstances.”

In other reports, the police saidthe man was “nothing but skin andbone”. His car was covered in snowby a storm in December and thatparticular road, a small road out-side the city, had not been ploughedsince then. The man had not beenreported as missing.

The BBC reported the tempera-ture in the area had recentlydropped to -22F (-30C).

A rescue team member told re-

gional daily Vasterbottens-Kur-iren, which broke the news: “It’sjust incredible that he’s alive con-sidering that he had no food, but al-so since it’s been really cold sinceChristmas.”

Doctors at the hospital said hu-mans would normally be able tosurvive for about four weeks with-out food. Besides eating snow, theman probably survived by going in-to a dormant-like state, physicianStefan Branth said.

“A bit like a bear that hibernates.Humans can do that,” he said. “Heprobably had a body temperature ofaround 31C, which the body adjust-ed to. Due to the low temperature,not much energy was used up.” –Wheels 24.

Cycling inCape TownTHE City of Cape Town urges all road usersto exercise caution and common sense onthe city’s roads, especially during a timeof year when greater numbers of cyclistswill be on our roads in the build-up to theiconic Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tourin March.

Along with the increase of cyclists,comes an unfortunate increase in thenumber of accidents involving cyclists.

There are ten ways for cyclists to staysafe on Cape Town’s roads:

• Be visible.Cyclists can help by wearing high-visi-

bility clothing (orange, neon green orpink), flashing LED belts and trouser-straps – and by riding 1.5m in from the roadedge.

• Obey the rules of the road: Cyclistsshould stop at stop signs and obey road sig-nage like all other road users.

• Be assertive but polite.

Show other road-users respect and theywill show respect to cyclists.

• Pay attention at intersections and traf-fic circles – particularly when you are trav-elling straight onwards and the vehiclesare turning left.

At stop streets and traffic lights, come toa halt slightly in front of stationary vehi-cles.

• Be predictable. Indicate where you in-tend to go.

• Ride in single file and wear a helmet.It’s against the law to ride without a hel-met.

• Don’t deliberately swerve your bikefrom side to side, and always keep at leastone hand on the handlebars.

• Light up your bike: white lights/reflec-tors on the front; red lights/reflectors onthe back.

• Be prepared: Carry water, a pump, apatch kit and identification.

Check your bike for obvious mechani-cal problems every time you leave for aride.

• Report dangerous and reckless driving.“City Traffic Officers will be focusing on

the behaviour of both cyclists and motor-ists and where the law is broken, fines willbe issued.” Smith said.

Buck stops hereIN a bid to fight fraud and corruption, theSouth African Social Security Agency (Sassa)will re-register all social grant beneficiaries.

There are over 15.3 million beneficiaries ofsocial grants, of which 10.3 million are chil-dren.

Social Development Minister BathabileDlamini has given an assurance that none ofthe 15.3 million social grants will be cut dur-ing re-registration.

In fact, the introduction of an automated bi-ometric-based payment system will enableSassa to directly pay the right social grant tothe right person.

The first phase is from 1 March to the endof May. During this phase, beneficiariesshould continue collecting their grants wherethey always do. During this period, new bene-ficiarieswill be enrolledon thenewbiometricsystem at Sassa offices.

The second phase, from June 1 to December31, will see existing beneficiaries being en-rolled on the new system at Sassa pay points,local offices and designated sites.

Sassa will re-register beneficiaries over 75years of age and bedridden beneficiaries attheir homes and institutions.

With thousands of convictions for grantfraud, itmakes sense thatSassa constantly re-views and eliminates potential weaknesses inits system. An initial investment into a moresophisticated system equates to short termsacrifice for long term gain.

Along with rolling out new payment mod-els, educating those on the receiving end offraudulently acquired grants, is compulsory.

Social grants are for those who desperatelyneed financial assistance, but sadly, there areshameless individuals who exploit the sys-tem, without a thought for the countless wom-en whose childrens’ fathers have vanished.

Without social grants, most of these moth-ers would have no means of providing fortheir offspring, which makes the actions ofthose cashing in on grants not due to them,more deplorable; and places the onus on eve-ry law-abiding citizen to intensify the fightagainst fraud.

Illegal dumping remains an issueTHE issue of illegal dumping is again high-lighted in the media, and the comment thatsticks out is that illegal dumping has in-creased drastically and this in turn leads toan increase in the mice and rat population.

Policing in this regard seems not to existand as a result it leads to an increase in ille-gal dumping.

If you takeyourdirt orwaste to thedrop-offsites eg. in Wynberg, your load is subjectedto such scrutiny and inspection and if youdo not fit the criteria you are told to go toMuizenberg. This causes people to illegallydump and blame the system to justify theirunlawful actions.

Ward councillors should put their headstogether and see if a realistic solution can befound. Can and will large containers at stra-tegic points in the suburbs be a possible solu-tion. It will save the dumper the heavy petrolcost of going to landfill sites. If the currenttrend continues, the City will keep on havingto foot the bill to clean the illegal dumping.

The illegal dumper must have a home andan income. He could be a deacon, a law en-

forcement member, a spiritual leader, a pen-sioner, businessman, house-wife or any pro-fession that you can think of.

Normal household dirt gets placed in binsprovided by council and on the day of collec-tion that bin is cleaned and stored in its allo-cated place on the property.

But unforeseen rubbish and dirt eg. mat-tresses, old clothing, old carpets, old maga-zines etc. cannot fit into that solitary binmeant for household waste.

To keep this unforeseen burden on one’sown premises creates health and other haz-ards.

To burn rubbish is also not a solutionThereasonwhypeopledonot report dump-

ing is tactical and practical, because whenthe neighbours are watching television orsleeping at night is when dumping occurs.

Am I perhaps missing something?We received notification today from theBaden Powell Landfill site regarding the fu-ture cost of waste disposal. Both businessand domestic.

I can understand them trying to raise mon-ey for operating costs, but have they calcu-lated the cost of cleaning the area on thesides of the roads between Muizenberg andMitchells Plain for example. I can guaranteethat every small business will now simplydump next to the road.

This system was tried before and was a dis-mal failure and resulted in rubbish beingdumped on the outskirts of the urban area.

The description of what is allowed and thebreakdown of cost is totally confusing. Iquote “What is constituted as domesticwaste is as follows:

Defined as waste generated from house-hold activities at residential-zoned proper-ties includes household and garage wastebut excludes kitchen waste, garden waste,builders rubble, and household hazardouswaste.”

Cape musos on brink of stardomTWO young Cape Town musicians willfind out this week if they will be perform-ing on the same stage as multi-award win-ning, platinum selling R&B star UsherRaymond, when he visits South Africanext month.

BusiMandNonkuPhiri are finalists in theHansa Festival of Legends competition,which seeks to find one artist from eachprovince to perform as an opening act at Ray-mond’s concert.

Busisiwe Madlala, better known by herstage monicker Busi M, was born in theCape’s historic township of Langa and is afinal-year student at the University of theWestern Cape where she is completing a BAin Women and Gender studies.

Madlala’s music can best be described asdance, but the 24-year-old has an eclecticbackground when it comes to her art.

“During my school days I sung in a jazzband and was also involved in cabaret,” saidMadlala.

“After school I considered studying musicbut decided to rather focus on becomingqualified in something else, which couldearn me an income while I pursued my musi-cal ambitions,” Busi says.

The second finalist is 23-year-old NonkuPhiri, an R&B soul artist who describes her-self as a “fun-loving thrill seeker”.

As the daughter of African jazz legend RayPhiri, Nonku Phiri has music flowing in herveins.However, Phiri says that shehada latestart as a performer.

“I started performing at 17. I was a latebloomer; the music only started comingwhen I was about 20 and I started doing myown writing,” says Phiri.

She adds that she does not discuss musicwith her father. “We usually don’t even dis-

cuss my music – to me he is just my dad.”Madlala and Phiri may be unknown to

most Capetonians, but both artists have al-ready made strides toward stardom in theircareers.

Busi M performed as a back-up singer forSouth African songbird Simphiwe Dana atthe 2011 Cape Town International Jazz Festi-val, and has also sung for gospel project Joy-ous Celebration.

People’s Post got a sneak preview of whatthe Mother City will look like on Saturday24 March at the events media launch at theCasablanca Club in the Waterfront.

Organisers of the carnival say it will bea spectacular celebration of art, music anddance.

Street performers start taking on the Fan-walk at 17:00 and the parade will officiallyopen at 20:00.

The venue has been moved from LongStreet to the popular Fanwalk becausecrowds were increasing and the popularstreet could not hold all visitors.

“Due to the overwhelming support lastyear, we had no choice but to move to a larg-er space to accommodate the continuallygrowing audience,” says Jay Douwes, CEOof the Cape Town Carnival.

The theme for this year is “Cape to Cairo”,and the rich history and diversity of the en-tire continent will be celebrated.

“The Cape to Cairo theme for this year’scarnivalnot only celebrates the richart,mu-sic, culture and heritage of the African con-tinent, but also helps raise awarenessaround important issues like xenophobia,”says Minister of Arts and Culture PaulMashatile.

Play explores marine disasterON the morning of Wednes-day 21 February 1917, the SSMendi troopship, carryingthe Fifth Battalion of theSouth African Native LabourContingent with 805 privates,22 officers and a crew of 33,sank just south of the Isle ofWight.

The ship sank in 20 min-utes, and 607 troops, nine of-ficers and all 33 crew mem-bers died in the icy waters ofthe English Channel. Thecaptain of the Darro, HWStump, was later disciplinedfor travelling at speedthrough fog without sound-ing a warning horn.

It was also said that hetook no steps to save thedrowning, merely floatinghis ship nearby while life-boats from the SS Mendi’s es-corting destroyer, HMS

Brisk, rowed among survi-vors, trying to rescue them.

Widely regarded as one ofthe greatest tragedies in thehistory of the South Africanmilitary this fateful eventwill be commemorated onSunday 19 February at 11:00at the Sunday Times SS Men-di/Reverend Isaac Wau-chope Memorial at UCT.

Narrated through Africanelements, sounds and move-ments, the play is written byLara Foot and directed byMandla Mbothwe.

“The Mendi project hascome at a time when it’s im-perative for South Africansto excavate their history, toreturn these stories to thelandscape and to reclaim ourstolen memory,” explainsMbothwe.

Wave-riders have enjoyed excellent weather andsurf this year with one hardcore Far South surfingfamily reportedly waking at 3am on the recent fullmoon to don their wetsuits and get some waves all bythemselves at a normally crowded Kommetjie surfs-pot.

Full moon surfing was a regular pastime back in thedays before Great White sharks became a protectedspecies and then moved inshore after becoming habit-uated to chum, bait and human contact without anyadverse consequences. Decades passed between sharksightings back then, but with scores now spotted inthe shallows every summer it takes dedicated andbrave souls to venture into the ocean at night thesedays!

Carr is focused onthe job at handLIAM MOSES

RUGBY has always beenmore than just a gamefor Nizaam Carr, and

now his passion for the sport,and his abundant talent,looks set to help him fulfil hisdreams.

The young Stormers loose-for-ward has set tongues waggingwith his polished performancesduring the team’s warm-upgames this year.

Carr broke into the side thisseason, largely due to the una-vailability of several more estab-lished stars and the departure offirst team members in the off-season, and he has not lookedback since.

Many Stormers fans believe that Carris destined to wear the green and goldof the Springboks, but the humble 20-year-old says he is still getting used toplaying in the same team as his heroes.

“It’s really like a dream come true. Allthe guys up there, the likes of SchalkBurger, Bryan Habana and Jean de Vil-liers I watched five years ago, and to bepart of them is something special,” saidCarr.

“But it doesn’t stop there. Now I reallyhave to start working. Now it’s time toshow the coaches why they selected me.Now all the hard work begins. Now thatyou are there it’s difficult to keep yourspot. You have to keep producing.”

Carr grew up in New Woodlands,Mitchell’s Plain, and started playingrugby as an 11-year-old while still a pupil

at nearby West End Primary School.He had previously taken part in other

sports like athletics, soccer, cricket andvolley ball.

Carr says that while he achieved a fairamount of success in those sports, henever felt the typeof passion thathe feelsfor rugby.

“I liked it from the start and I said tomy parents that I wanted to stick to it.It was really something that I wanted todo,” said Carr.

“I didn’t know then that I wanted tobe a professional rugby player. I just re-ally enjoyed playing sport. I only real-ised as an Under 15 that I should makethis my profession.” Carr, who now livesin Crawford, already has several notableachievements under his belt, includingwinning the Varsity Cup last year withthe University of Cape Town, playing forthe Springbok Under 19 team, and play-ing in the IRB Junior World Champion-ships.

But now the youngster has his sightsset on achieving even higher honoursand says that he intends to do what ittakes to reach his goals.

“My long term goal is to play for thespringboks. I don’t know how long it’sgoing to take.

“I know it’s going to take hard workand dedication,” said Carr.

Carr added that his plans for the im-mediate future are to improve as a play-er and to test himself against the topplayers in the world.

“My short term goal is to play Super15 this year, to work hard and have funand be at the top level amongst interna-tional players, so that that I can see whatmy level is like against them.

“But that obviously comes with gametime and I’m not a first choice playeryet.”

PASSION, dedication and an undying lovefor writing, is what drew the new sportsjournalist at People’s Post, Liam Moses (25),into the world of journalism.

Born and bred in Thornton, this sports en-thusiast always loved reading and writing,and thought that studying journalismwouldbe a perfect opportunity to combine thesetwo passions of his.

“I’ve always loved sport, especially rugby.I took part in Judo, Karate, kickboxing andI played rugby in high school. I’ve alwaysenjoyed writing about rugby more than I en-joyed playing the game,” he says.

After completing his school career at bothPinelands Primary School and PinelandsHigh School, Moses pursued his aspirationof becoming a journalist.

He received his diploma in journalism atthe Cape Peninsula University of Technolo-gy in 2010, and then landed a position at theMedia24 Journalism Academy last year,where he was taught all about media, andspent the year at various publications with-in the group.

“It’s basically a one year-long post-gradu-ate internship programme where you spendsome of the time in a classroom environ-ment, learning from the best journalists inSouth Africa, and the rest of the time at pub-lications in the group.

“I spent time here at the People’s Post,then at Sport24.co.za and then at the CityPress. I liked it so much here (at People’sPost) that I decided to come back,” he says.

Even though Moses found it to be a greatlearning opportunity, it was difficult forhim to spend so much time away from his

family and friends.Being the family man that Moses is, he es-

pecially loves spending time with his four-year-old sister and three-year-old niece.

Moses’ life “basically revolves aroundsport” and if he is not seen lounging in frontof the TV watching different types of sport,he can be found watching movies or listen-ing to music. He also owns a guitar, but iron-ically, has no idea how to play it.

With his new post as the sports journalistat People’s Post, Moses hopes to give readers“the quality, comprehensive sports cover-age that they deserve”. And with confidencehe says: “I have just started in the job, butI know that I will get better and better overtime.”

Stormers underinjury cloudLIAM MOSES

AN injury cloud has enveloped theStormers ahead of their openingSuper Rugby clash against the

Hurricanes at Newlands this Saturday.

No less than five of the side’s first teamplayers have either been ruled out of thegame or deemed unlikely to start, after pick-ing up injuries over the past two weeks.

Last week, the management team were hitby the news that tough lock Rynhardt Elstadt,who only returned from a long-term injurylay-off during the pre-season, had damagedligaments in his knee and could be out for aslong as three weeks.

Elstadt was an integral part of the Stormersside that won the South African conferenceduring the 2011 Super Rugby season, addingmuch-needed grit and physicality to a for-ward pack that has long been considered asone of the softest in South Africa.

Elstadt’s place in the starting line-up willnow be filled by either De Cock Steenkampor youngster Eben Etzebeth, whose perform-ances have become more impressive withevery game he plays.

Nuggety hooker Deon Fourie was alsoruled out of the match after he suffered a bro-ken hand during a warm-up match againstthe EP Kings in Port Elizabeth, on Saturday11 February.

Fourie may not have been the first choice

hooker, as Tiaan Liebenberg was more likelyto start, but the Stormers will miss his ener-getic performances.

The stocky hooker has become one of theteam’s most potent attacking weapons, espe-cially in the last quarter of the game whenhis unexpected pace and explosive power cancatch tired opponents off-guard and see himburst through half-gaps. The Stormers maybe without his services for another fiveweeks. Other players who are in doubt for theseason opener are Springbok centre Juan deJongh, athletic loose-forward Nick Kosterand diminutive utility-back Joe Pietersen.

De Jongh took a knock to his jaw recentlyand could miss the game completely or startfrom the bench, meaning that Bok wing Bry-an Habana or youngster JP du Plessis wouldhave to step into the number 13 jersey.

Habana started his professional career atoutside centre and impressed Stormers coachAlister Coetzee when he played there againstthe Kings

Koster is in doubt due to a knee injury, butthe return of first-choice eighthman DuaneVermeulen and the emergence of NizaamCarr as an option will lessen the damage doneby his unavailability.

Pietersen is suffering from a hamstringstrain and could also miss the match. Pie-tersen’s versatility makes him an importantasset to the side.TheStormershave sufficientcover out wide and his loss should not be amajor concern for Coetzee’s side.

The injuries will further weaken a Storm-ers side that has already lost several first-team players to other rugby teams, both inSouth Africa and abroad.

The Hurricanes suffered a similar exodusof talent and experience in the off-season. TheWellington side lost several first team play-

ers, including All Blacks Aaron Cruden, An-drew Hore, Hosea Gear, Ma’a Nonu and PiriWeepu.

Despite the injuries, the Stormers shouldstill be considered favourites to win thematch, and a loss will be a setback to theirSuper Rugby ambitions this season.
