End in sight to gang war?LUZUKO ZINI
A ‘PEACE deal’ believed to have beenstruck between rival gangs in LavenderHill has been met with mixed emotionsfrom the community.
Yesterday the community of Lavender Hillheard news of a deal between rival gangs –Junky Funky Kids, Mongrels and CornerBoys – which could see the end of gang warsand senseless killings. The gang wars, be-lieved to be over drug turf, have riddled thecommunities of Lavender Hill, Steenberg andSeawinds since 2010.
Steenberg Community Police ForumChairperson (CPF) Kevin Southgate believesthis treaty is a positive sign.
“From what I know the initiative to get the
gang leaders to talk and try to resolve theirdifferences was organised by religious stake-holders. This is great because things can getbetter,” he says.
Southgate adds this is not the first time anagreement of this nature has been reached.
However, he remains sceptical.“Wehavebeendown this roadbeforewhere
the gangsters say they have made peace anda couple of weeks later things go back to theway they were,” he says.
Proportional representative councillorLlewellyn Jordaan believes the gangstersneed guidance to make better choices.
“There was mediation between the rivalgangs and after the two weeks of negotiationthey finally agreed to meet. They need oursupport so they can change,” he comments.
“The gangs need to own up and accept re-
sponsibility by apologising to the communi-ty, even though that may not bring back thosewho have died.”
Southgate says this may be part of thegangs’ strategic plan to shift focus.
“In December we had this sort of deal beingmade and in February the killings beganagain. I hope this (treaty) will last and every-one will stick to what they promised, so thatwe can have a better future,” he says.
“I support these initiatives,” he says “be-cause they will bring change so that we canat least live in safer communities.”
Pastor Peter Solomons from Lavender Hillbelieves it may take a while before things aresorted.
“An agreement between rival gangs hasbeen reached and we, as community leaders, understand things may take time, but this is
a step in the right direction,” he says.Southgate says the Steenberg CPF did not
attend the “peace agreement” signing.“We, as the CPF, were not mandated by the
community to attend. Our policy, as the CPF,is to establish and maintain relationshipswith the police and help create safety,” hesays. “Even thoughwemaynothaveattendedmeetings, we support the attempts made tomake a difference.”
People’s Post attempted to gain commentfrom Steenberg police, but was unable to doso at the time of going to print.

Wishing all our Muslim clients and staff well over the month of RamadaanMASSIVEWAREHOUSE CLEARANCE
Remembering your spiritRemembering your spiritDear reader,
We are well into the firstweek of Ramadan, a holymonth during which Mus-lims throughout the worldgo without food, drink andphysical intimacies fromsunrise to sunset.
The month is spent per-forming extra prayers(Taraweeh), remainingspiritually contemplativeand repentant, and show-ing empathy and charitytowards those less privi-leged.
Fasting is one of the five pillars of Is-lam and is known for its spiritual andhealth benefits.
Those who have fasted for many yearswill know how testing a journey it canbe. Foregoing food and drink is the easi-er part.
Remaining steadfast in your spiritualresolve and resisting provocation is thehard part.
It is especially trying when, in addi-tion to the usual demands of your profes-
sional and personal life, you are faced with extrachallenges.
The beauty of being ina state of fasting thoughis that your body andmindautomatically tran-scends base urges and, even if you wanted tolashout in anger at some-one who has annoyedyou, you invariably findyourself unable to.
Usually by the end ofRamadan, Muslims feelsad for a host of reasons.
Some regret not optimising the spirit-ual growth opportunity, others feel asense of loss of the unity experienced, and many undertake to uphold the prac-tices of kindness and sharing.
My challenge as I progress throughthis month, will be to act selflessly andcontain my emotions as I brace myselffor one of the toughest challenges of mylife; that of letting the little boy who hasknown me as his mother for five of hissix years learn that he has another moth-er.
Two weeks ago, my foster son’s lifewas turned upside down when he methis birth mother, whom he hadn’t seenin four years.
She took him one side and quietly toldhim that she was his real mother andwanted to take him home with her.
He protested by drawing a picture ofme, complete with long hair – as opposedto her short hair – and then showing herwho his mother is.
To her telling him that the name he isknown by was not his name, he promptlywrote down the five letters of his name.
Although I was angry at the bad tim-ing, I was very proud of my son for stand-ing his ground and asserting his identi-ty.
I was also proud of his confidence; andability to spell and draw.
Sadly, he was traumatised after thismeeting, constantly expressing his fearat being taken away from his home andparents.
Through mutual agreement, a seriesof regular visits aimed at reuniting myson with his biological family has beenscheduled, with the first one meant tohave taken place today.
I was relieved when the social workerinformed me yesterday that the visit hadbeen cancelled.
But I knowthat future interactionsareinevitable and that I cannot control theprocesses that may stem from them.
What I can do is protect my son fromhurt, remind all parties concerned thatdecisions should be made in his, not theadults’ best interests and continue toprovide a safe, loving home for him.
In a perfect world, I would have pro-tected my son from some of his lifetruths, but as the older and responsibleone, I know that life seldom goes accord-ing to plan.
As I look forward to Ramadan and thepeace and strength it will bring me, I amalso aware that it will be a crucial timefor me to choose the correct responsesto influence a positive outcome for thechild entrusted to me.

Brakes on taxi goodwillBrakes on taxi goodwillLUZUKO ZINI
A GOOD deed has left a bitter aftertasteforRetreatTaxiAssociation taxidrivers.
The Retreat Taxi Association offered freetrips to commuters in honour of MandelaDay.
The association has 104 taxis and everytaxi departing from the Retreat bus termi-nus offered one free trip to commuters.
Jay-Jay Maans, deputy chairperson of Re-treat Taxi Association, says they needed tohonour Mandela on his 94th birthday.
“The executive committee sat down anddiscussed what could we do to honour theformer president. It was decided that we willoffer free trips to our passengers,” he says.
“After the meeting we told the ownerswhat we were planning and they agreed.”
However, this did not go down well withthe association’s drivers who claim ownersstill wanted a daily target to be met.
Lebohang Lebesana, one of the taxi driverssays: “The passengers were shocked andhappy at the same time but for that free tripI will have to pay because the owner wantshis full target for the day.”
Another association taxi driver, whospoke on condition of anonymity, says: “It istotally unfair because I will have to meet thetarget that my boss wants even though therewas a free trip.
“This free trip is a good idea in honour ofMandela but because of it I now have to paythe boss at least R96 out of my own pocketif I don't meet the target.”
The association’s administrative secre-tary Ronald Romon says though some driv-
ers may be unhappy the initiative was a suc-cess.
“The decision was taken by the executivewhich includes owners. To my knowledge allthe drivers cooperated. We know we can nev-er please everyone but this was done to showrespect to Nelson Mandela,” he says.
Jason Solomons, a passenger who waslucky enough to not pay the normal R6 whenhe travels to Wynberg in the mornings, sayshis perception about taxi drivers and ownerswill change.
“What they did is great. Even though taxidrivers and owners are seen as rude peopleit shows they have a heart. My view of themwill definitely change,” he says.
Noleen Adams, says she was all smileswhen the driver told her “It’s Mandela Day,
so you don't pay”.“It is a very nice thing for them to do. It
shows that they respect Mandela Day,” shesays.
The association’s secretary SulaimanBrenner tells People’s Post that the associa-tion also teamed up with Kirstenhof policeto help a local school.
“The Kirstenhof police were looking forsomeone to donate prizes to Westlake Prima-ry School, which is where the Kirstonhof po-lice will spend 67 minutes of their time inhonour of Mandela day. The school is host-ing an art competition and the associationsupplied the prizes.”
Some of the prizes the association spon-sored are two movie tickets, colouring booksand two meal vouchers.

Cops on civvy duty – a joke or not?Cops on civvy duty – a joke or not?A DECISION by the SA policeservices authorities to cancelprivate contracts – includingguards at gates and cleaningservices – has been met with ridi-cule.
The official opposition, the DA,has reportedly said nobody willtake seriously a police officer witha “mop in hand”.
DA spokesperson Dianne KohlerBarnard said in a statement: “Thismeans we have fewer cops on thestreets and more in police officestaking responsibility for non-coreduties.”
People’s Post reporters TeresaFischer, Laila Majiet and Sum-mer Jacobs polled readers for theirviews.
SCEPTICAL:Peter Samuel says:“There areno metal detectors atpolice stations and anybody canliterallywalk in.” Anformer firefighter, hesays back inthe day they used to have to cleantheir own fire engines; now they havecleaners do it. He says the policeshould look after themselves, but hedoesn’t think it will happen. “If itdoes, what will they do will the money they save?” Photo: Teresa Fischer
AGAINST: Veronique Lemeney says:“I didn’t even know they had securityguards at police stations. By havingsecurity they are creating jobs forpeople and there will be more policeout in the field. What will happen nowif one phones them and they can’tcome out because they are busyguarding the station?”

BE RESOURCEFUL: MyrtleChristiansays policestationsshould usethe servicesat hand.Christiansays: “Iknow somepolice stations withholding cells use the people in theholding cells to help clean aroundthe station. GOOD IDEA: Clive Booysen says itmay be a good idea to get police todo civilian work. However, he says:“It shouldn’t interfere with their policing work. Police officers alreadyhave a lot on their plate.”

WISHING ALL OUR MUSLIM CLIENTS WELL OVER THE MONTH OF RAMADAAN
In memory of ZunaidIn memory of ZunaidLUZUKO ZINI
A COMMUNITY came together in grief toremember slain eight-year-old ZunaidMckenzie.
Pupils and staff of Steenberg PrimarySchool, together with provincial police man-agement, honoured the memory of Mckenzielast Wednesday.
The Steenberg boy was killed in the cross-fire between rival gangs outside his homeearlier this month (“Wrong place at wrongtime”, People’s Post, 3 July).
Thememorial service coincidedwithMan-dela Day and was also supported by officersof the Steenberg police station.
This visit follows a visit by national policeminister Nathi Mthethwa and national Po-lice Commissioner General Riah Phiyega tothe Lavender Hill and Steenberg communi-ties last week.
Deputy principal of Steenberg Primary,Vernon Erfort, says the loss of Mckenzie isstill a shock to staff and pupils of the school.
“Some of the pupils and teachers onlyheard the news when the school re-opened.The staff and pupils will receive psychologi-cal assistance to deal with the sad news,” Er-fort says.
The police volunteered by cleaning theschool and spoke to learners during an as-sembly as part of their 67 minutes of goodwillfor Mandela Day.
Erfort says of their gesture: “The school isthankful to the police who have shown thatthey care about the community on this day.”
Deputy Provincial Commissioner MajorGeneral Sharon Jephta, who was the guestspeaker, says the pupils need to know thatthe police care.
“We are here today not only because it isMandelaDay, but to showthat thepolice careabout the community and we are doing our
very best to fight crime and make our com-munities safer,” she says.
“The former president has shown us thatwe can make a difference in this world – nomatter how little it may be.”
The police also donated blankets to theschool.
Erfort says the donations are welcomed.“We appreciate the donations because
there are children in the school and area whoare in need this winter,” he says.
Brigadier Wynard Viljoen, who is the Pro-vincial Head of Training, opened the assem-
bly with a prayer.“God loves everyone here and the message

A SON of Steenberg – and now head ofFree State University – has returned tohis home soil to help inspire youngstersat Lavender Hill High School.
Professor Jonathan Jansen spoke to pupilsat his alma mater, sharing his journey withthem.
“I was born and raised around these are-as,” says Jansen.
“I went to Steenberg High School and I’mhere today as the patron of the YES Projectto motivate these children so that they canbe better people.”
The YES Project seeks to address social is-sues and change the thinking of youth inLavender Hill and surrounding areas.
Jansen says: “The message I want to bringto the children is that they should not lettheir environment define them. The onlything we hear about Steenberg and LavenderHill is the gang violence.
“I hope the children can take note from aperson who has grown up here and also wantto achieve better things in life.”
Provincial Community Safety ministerDan Plato was also present and conveyed amessage of inspiration.
“The pupils here need to know that theycan achieve anything they want if they focusand strive to be better people,” says Plato.
“I’m also a living example of being able tomake something out of your life even if situa-tions are difficult.”
Steenberg Community Police Forum(CPF) chairperson Kevin Southgate says thepupils need to learn from Jansen and Plato.
“The pupils here need to know that theycan also make it out of any situation. Profes-sor Jansen has shown that anything is possi-ble. He brings hope and inspiration to thiscommunity,” he says.
The school’s principal, Faseeg Manie, saysa positive mindset and dedication are keycharacters in achieving success in life.
“Today I hope my learners took somethingvaluable from the guests who spoke tothem,” Manie says.
“I also hope to see one or all of them go andachieve big things life, so that Lavender Hillcan be known for the right reasons insteadof the gangs and crime.”
POSITIVE MESSAGE: Professor Jonathan Jansen speaks to pupils at Lavender Hill High Schoolabout having a positive attitude..

Safety wrapTHE Summer Olympics kick off in London onFriday.
One of the major concerns levelled at theSA 2010 World Cup Soccer – crime – is comingback to haunt London.
Among the most barbed voices in the worldmedia, the Brits simply could not reign intheir negativity around a safe world event inthis former colony.
History has proven their fears unfounded. Now the same questions are being asked of
the London Olympics. How safe will visitorsand athletes be? In particular, Israeli athleteswho mark the 40th anniversary of the Gamesin Munich, Germany, when terrorists killed11 Israeli athletes and coaches.
Chairman of the London 2012 Olympics, Se-bastian Coe, has promised a “safe and secure”event.
Coe fielded media enquiries after the fail-ure of private security company G4S to pro-vide adequate security staff. This has led to3 500 more British troops being called in,making it about 17 000 troops on duty to keepCoe true to his word.
Safety of another matter has also been anissue. Sex workers in Newham, the east Lon-don area which houses the stadium, havebeen bearing the brunt of a police blitz.
The expected influx of two million visitorsfor the Olympics will, it is reportedly predict-ed, inject £13bn into the UK economy overthe next four years. Perhaps safe sex is theone aspect of personal safety visitors to Lon-don may not have to worry about.
A crime associated directly with the SASoccer World Cup – the armed robbery ofthree foreign reporters covering the Portu-guese soccer team at a four-star high-securitylodge near Johannesburg – has at the timebeen solved promptly.
Two Zimbabweans and a Nigerian were ar-rested, charged, tried, convicted and sen-tenced in one of 54 special courts set up.
The world waits to see if the same efficiencycan be expected of London.
Shooting: sendin the troopsTHE shooting has been carrying onin Lavender Hill and it seems to begetting worse. Mothers and chil-dren are losing their lives. Wemarched as one community andthat was just the start of what is tocome.
We want the army even thoughsome people are against the idea. How can we build safer communi-ties if the police system is againstus? We are affected and we have hadenough.CURSHWONWard 110

Well wishes over the fast. May I take this opportunity towish our Muslim Community inWard 63 and subcouncil 18 well overthe fast. Subcouncil 18 chairpersonand Ward 63 councillor, Monty Oliv-er
. Ward 110 councillor ShanenRossouw wishes the Muslim com-munity well over the fast.
Restoring Lavender Hill’s beautyWITH the current situation and developmentswithin the greater Retreat communities every-one is focused on the drama and social evilsaround us.
Community workers and leaders are losingthe battle on their purpose. We, as communityleaders, are being criticised for all the wrongreasons and the communities never see thehard work we put in.
Where netball and soccer were highlightsover weekends, these days we are faced with theinevitable gang violence and fear.
We should also remember Lavender Hill isone of the prettiest communities.
We are just too blind to see it.The beauty of this community is still intact,
especially when the streets are filled with wa-ter, the grass turns greener and the birds singand chirp louder. The echo of gun shots does notchange the beauty of this once-popular sportingcommunity.
Despite the critics and the sign of communi-ties which are not united, I want to bring acrossI will continue my flawless work, I will standmy ground and will be a rock within this com-munity.
To all communities and community leaders:let’s not stand as individuals, but as a unit.
I don’t mind what communities and certainindividuals throw at me as long as the childrenand future leaders of tomorrow take a momentto say: “Hello, Uncle Clive, how are you today?”
The negative will never take away my pas-sion, drive and commitment for our communi-ties.
Mymissionandvision is to continue theworkfor the children of this beautiful Lavender Hill.
Let’s build a beautiful community as showedin this picture, because the beauty of this pic-ture represents who we really are.CLIVE JACOBSLavender Hill

We wish all our Muslim clientsa Ramadaan Mubarak!
RAMADAN is the ninth and holiestmonth of the Muslim lunar calendar.
For those 29 or 30 days, Muslims, as aspiritual exercise designed to bring themcloser to God through contemplation andhumility, but not without joy and festivi-ties, are required to abstain from food, drink and sex of any sort during daylighthours. They may indulge in all three atnight.
Ramadan is in Islam what Thanksgiv-ing is in the United States – an extendedoccasion for socialising, celebrating andloving.
Ramadan is one of the five pillars, or es-sential practices, of Islam.
The fasting rule is flexible. Children, the infirm, the sick, pregnant women andsometimes even travellers are not re-quired to fast.
There’s also the matter of logic. For example, what would a scientist
working in the Arctic or the Antarctic –where, depending on the season, the sunmay neither set nor rise at all – be re-quired to do?
What would a traveller jetting from oneendof the globe to the other, hurdling timezones while outlasting the sun’s normalrhythm for 24 hours, be required to do?
In either case, Islam is not obtuse. The practising Muslim would fast in ac-
cordance with a clock they set realistical-ly, perhaps in line with the rising and set-ting sun on Mecca time.
Ramadan does not fall on a specific dateon the Gregorian, or Western, calendar.
Nor is it determined scientifically, butby clerics’ observation, through thenakedeye, of the first sliver of the new moon onthe ninth month of the Islamic calendar.
That means Ramadan in Algeria couldbegin a day earlier or later than in Oman.
www.about.com
THE fast of Ramadan is rigorous during thebest of times.
During long and hot summer days, it wouldstill be required for Muslims to observe thefast for as many as 16 or more hours at a time.
To ensure adequate nutrition and contin-ued good health, follow these tips:
. Prior to Ramadan, a Muslim should al-ways consult with a doctor about the safetyof fasting in individual health circumstances.
. Even if you are generally healthy, recog-nise that Ramadan will take a toll. Plan yourschedule and meals ahead of time in order tomake sure you get the nutrients, hydrationand rest that you need.
. Eat breakfast just prior to dawn. Yes, it’shard to get up at that hour, which is why ithas many benefits and rewards. It will helpyou to wake up for the Fajr prayer. Thesuhoor meal is Sunnah. And this morningmeal is generally recognised as the singlemost important meal of the day.
Do not overeat, though. Focus on taking infoods that are rich in complex carbohydratesand protein, fruits or vegetables, and plentyof water.
For example: an egg on whole-grain toast,a few crackers with peanut butter, some or-ange slices and two glasses of water.
. During the hottest part of the day, stayin cool areas (indoors or in shade) and limityour physical activity. Rest if possible.
. Avoid overindulging when breaking thefast at sunset. Follow the Sunnah: break yourfast with dates and either milk, water, or fruitjuice. After the maghrib prayer, continuewith a light starter such as soup. After a longperiod of fasting, you need to bring your flu-ids and blood sugar level up without overdo-ing it.
. During the early evening (after magh-
rib), have a healthy and balanced dinner. Donot overeat.
. During the evening hours, resist thetemptation to drink tea, coffee and soda. When visiting friends or family, ask for glass-es of water.
. Serve yourself, your family and guests a“dessert” of fresh fruit and nuts. There arelovely choices available in this season, andthey are much more healthy than cakes andsamoosas.
. Sip on water throughout the evening.Aim for eight glasses by bedtime. To help youkeep track, fill and refill a water bottle witha measured amount of water and finish it.

House breakin worriesHouse breakin worriesLUZUKO ZINI
A SPIKE in house break-ins – coupled bythe alleged slow response from the po-lice – has Heathfield and Elfindale resi-dents up in arms.
Heathfield resident Garth Fortuin saysthe increase in cime is of much concern tohim.
Fortuin says: “We have never had crimelike this before. Just last week we had twohouse break-in incidents here in MignonRoad.”
He adds, “Last Thursday just after 08:00,a guy broke into my brother’s house via theback window which he broke.
“He took a pair of shoes, a cellphone anda watch.”
Candice Demper believes the area is nolonger safe.
“Someone broke into my son’s car whenit was parked outside our house during theday. If that can happen during the day,” shesays, “anything is possible.”
And there may be little relief in sight forthese areas, if the warning of a private secu-rity firm representative is anything to goby.
Peter Barnier, Head Of Operations at BHSecurity, warns the community that thingsmay get worse before they improve.
“In the last two months we had about 35house break-in incidents,” says Barnier.
This is a sharp incline inhousebreak-ins,as Barnier adds: “As the security companywe usually have five to six cases a month.I believe the break-ins may continue, butwe will do our best so that things can getbetter and the community can feel safe
again.”Barnier continues by saying the response
time from the police is a worrying factor.“Our response time is three to five min-
utes, but if we catch a criminal the policetake long to respond. They (police) will tellus police vans are assisting in LavenderHill,” he says.
Steenberg Community Police Forum(CPF) chairperson Kevin Southgate saysforming a neighbourhood watch in Heath-field is needed.
“The recent house break-ins and theft out
of motor vehicles is a real concern and Iwant to encourage the community of Heath-field to mobilise and form a neighbourhoodwatch which would help bring down thecrime,” he says.
Southgate, too, says the response time ofthe Steenberg police must be improvedeven though they are trying their best.
“The unfortunate reality is that the po-lice’s attention at the moment is with thegang violence, but this should not be an ex-cuse in slow response time.
“The police should respond in reasonable
time, but we also need to take into consider-ation that if a house is burgled the policehave to take a statement and get forensicsto take possible finger prints. At the mo-ment the main priority is dealing with thegangs in the Lavender Hill area,” he says.
Steenberg Station Commander ColonelNoel Josephs says the police act as soon asthey can.
“There may be instances when the policetake a bit longer to respond because theymay be at a scene that requires more thana few policemen,” says Josephs.
“We try our very best to treat every inci-dent reported equally. We do inform thepublic if there maybe a delay in our re-sponse time.”
SteenbergSectorManagerWarrantOffic-er Donovan Constant says Heathfield is notthe only area affected by this recent in-crease in crime.
“We have noticed in Steenberg the in-crease of assault, house break-ins and theftout of motor vehicles,” he says
Constant also add that the attention is onresponding to gang violence and this couldbe the reason for the slow response time.
“There is a vehicle patrolling the Heath-field area regularly. At the moment the fo-cus in on the gang issue, but this is not anexcuse because we must treat all crimes thesame. I will definitely alert my superiorsand we will deal with the problem immedi-ately,” he says.

New Honda CRV headed for SANew Honda CRV headed for SASINCE its launch in 1995, more than five-million Honda CR-V units have been soldglobally and the forthcoming generationsports a new design as it hopes to build onits predecessors’ success.
South African fans of the Japanese SUVwill have to wait until October or Novemberto get behind the wheel.
The initial range gives a choice betweentwo-litre and 2.2 diesel engines. Power re-mains the same for the i-DTEC diesel engine,at 110kW/350Nm though CO2 emissions forthe manual version have been reduced from171g/km to 153g/km.
The i-VTECpetrol seesmarginal powerandtorque increases to deliver 115kW and192Nm, while emissions have fallen from192g/km to 174g/km.
In front-wheel guise, the 2.0 petrol has aCO2 rating of 170g/km. The rest of rangesports all-wheel drive with hill assist and de-scent control.
Compared to the previous generationCR-V, the new model takes on a more asser-tive stance with a bold front design. Thebumper is joined by a horizontal grille anddeep-set headlights. The model’s signaturevertical tail-lights, now with LEDs, remainbut feature a three-dimensional style.
The headlights feature LED daytime run-ning lights.
Exterior designer Manabu Konaka says:“The CR-V has always been a car for everyoccasion. It can be both casual and formal, but theappearancemust always convey solid-ity and reliability.”
The length and height of the SUV has beenreduced by 5mm and 30mm respectively com-pared with the current model, without reduc-ing interior space.
With the rear seats folded flat, the boot ca-pacity of the CR-V has grown by 148 litres to1648 litres and with the seats folded up, bootcapacity is rated at 589 litres.
The load length has been increased by140mm to 1570mm, while the height of theload lip has been reduced by 25mm makingit easier to load heavy or awkward items.
Keyless entry and a power tailgate havebeen added to enhance its practicality.
The centre console sports a five-inch dis-play which controls audio, telephone andnavigation systems (where fitted).
More space has been created between theseats for two cup holders, a storage compart-
ment, armrest and airvents for the rear seats.Honda has added a host of technology as
standard for the new CR-V such as its ECONmode and Eco-assist systems.
When the ECON button is selected thethrottle responseandair-conditioningareau-tomatically adjusted to minimise fuel con-sumption.
The Eco-assist system uses the vehicle’sdashboard display to advise drivers on howtheir driving style is affecting fuel economy,
by changing the colour of the dial edges fromwhite to green when driving more efficiently.
The new CR-V is also the latest vehicle toemploy the automaker’s Advanced DriverAssist System (ADAS)
ADAS incorporates Honda’s Lane KeepingAssist System (LKAS), Adaptive Cruise Con-trol (ACC) and Collision Mitigation BrakingSystem (CMBS), which warns of an impend-ing collision and even applies the brakes tominimise an impact. – Wheels24

Beltbag gets green lightMERCEDES-BENZ’S inflatable seatbeltstrap – first seen on the ESF 2009 experi-mental safety vehicle concept – will go intoproduction, the automaker announced.
The inflatable seatbelt strap, called Belt-bag, will be made available in a “luxury-class model”, Mercedes-Benz said in astatement.
The seatbelt strap is designed to reducethe risk of injury to passengers in the rearin a head-on collision by reducing thestrain placed on the ribcage.
Once the vehicle’s crash sensors detectan impact, the airbag control unit triggersthe airbag deployment and the multilay-ered strap inflates to nearly three timesthe normal width to better distribute theforces acting on the passenger.
It is used in exactly the same way as aconventional seatbelt.
It is not planned to introduce the Beltbagfor front occupants, as airbags are alreadyincluded in the front, the automaker add-ed. – Wheels24

Opel appoints new interim chiefOpel appoints new interim chiefTHE supervisory board of Gener-al Motors’ Opel brand has namedThomas Sedran as head of Opelin the latest restructuring movefor the company.
Sedran’s new title as acting depu-ty chairman of the Opel manage-ment board follows the announce-ment that GM vice-chairperson Ste-ve Girsky would head the Europe
division on an interim basis, follow-ing Karl-Friedrich Stracke step-ping down after 16 months on thejob.
Stracke will, however, still takeon special assignments and reportto GM chairman and CEO Dan Ak-erson.
GM has lost $14bn (about R114bn)in Europe in the past 12 years. Aker-son told shareholders Europe was
the automaker’s biggest challenge.Girsky said they would continue
to implement the business plan andwork to improve it. “We will furtherreduce bureaucracy and continueto challenge the corporate culture.”
Sedran, a long-time consultant, will continue his managementboard role in charge of operations, business development and corpo-rate strategies, which he has held
since April.Wolfgang Schafer-Klug, head of
the Opel Works Council and deputyOpel supervisory board chairman, said the new team around Girskystood for change that Opel/Vaux-hall urgently needs. “Leaner man-agement structures, transparency, accountability and enforcement ca-pability. They will put Opel back ona growth path.” – Wheels24

I can't go onwithout thanking
Dr. SheikAbdul Kariem forthe work he did

concerning thevoices I washearing at

why I had them,because I
thought I wasbad luck, but
after meeting himI got to
understandthat it was the
power of the badspirits
that were chasingme. He removed

Urban WarriorsUrban Warriorsmatch Unitedmatch United
TAURIQ HASSEN
THE long-awaited battle between AjaxCape Town and Manchester United endedin a 1-1 draw at Cape Town Stadium.
The match, which had been eagerly antici-pated by both teams fans since its announce-ment, was played in wet and rainy condi-tions. This, however, did not stop fans fromdonning their team’s colours to the match towatch the somewhat disappointing match.
Ajax drew first blood when substitute, Al-cardoVanGraan, chipped ina cross, catchingManchester United’s solid defence off-guard.
The 19 time English league championswaited until the 93rd minute of stoppage timeto spoil the Urban Warrior’s party, when an-other substitute, Bebe, skilfully slotted in theball into the back of the net from close range.
Ajax proved their worth against a Man-chester United team missing big names suchas Wayne Rooney, Nani and Nemanja Vidic.
Khama Billiat was one of the stand out per-formers for Ajax, giving United’s young leftback, Tyler Blackett, a tough day at the office.
The Zimbabwean winger, who was namedman of the match, had the Cape Town outfit’sfirst real chance, striking the ball just wideof the right hand post. Minutes later the wing-er tore United’s midfield, which featured ex-perience campaigners in Micheal Carrickand veteran Paul Scholes, to shreds beforelosing his footing and the opportunity waslost.
Chances were few for United, with Javier“Chicharito” Hernandez getting on the end offew chances missed in front of goal. WingerAntonio Valencia was left frustrated, as Ajaxstubborn defence stood tall. A close range
header by the Mexican striker got the crowdto their feet, but anacrobatic save fromDutchkeeper Sander Westerveld, denied the gamesopener.
In the second half, United came out firing, but still lacked the killer instinct in front ofgoal. The closest chance came from the headof new signing, Shinji Kagawa, when a pinpoint accurate cross from Bebe was headedinches wide from the post.
Ajax hitman, Terror Fanteni, stung thehands of United keeper, Ben Amos, when hiseffort was dug out in the 75th minute.
Ajax coach Maarten Stekelenburg was de-lighted at the performance displayed by theUrban Warriors, saying: “The players wereall pumped up for this game and playing infront of a full stadium motivated our playerseven further.”
Defensively, Stekelenburg highlighted theefforts of Nazeer Allie and the towering fig-ure of Matthew Booth, acknowledging thatthe Cape side had conceded too many goalslast season.
“It’s still in our pre-season for us that’s whywe made a number of substitutions to ensurethat we keep our players fresh, but we willcontinue to work hard on the training fieldso that at the start of our season, we can con-tinue where we left off,” says the proud Steke-lenburg.
Manchester United Manager, Sir Alex Fer-guson, was impressed with Ajax’s perform-ance when he told MUTV: “They caused usa few problems and we decided to makechanges and bring on the younger players, but it was a very competitive game.”
He was particularly impressed with theperformance of his two new signings, Ka-gawa and Nick Powell.

THE log leaders in the Mr Price HighSchools League resumed their dominanceof the competition this weekend after re-turning from a month long break.
Oval North and Mondale went into thebreak deadlocked on 16 points each andin first and second place respectively, with Oval North ahead only on goal differ-ence.
This weekend both teams again showedwhy they have occupied the first two plac-es for several weeks, both recording com-fortable victories.
Oval North beat Glendale 2-0, whileMondale won 3-0 in their game against Ce-dar High. But Mondale’s extra goal hasdone little to narrow the six-goal deficitby which they trail.
Cloetesville, who lead the table earlierin the competition, kept hold of third posi-tion with a 3-1 victory over Tafelsig, send-ing their opponents tumbling from ninthto 11th.
The Stellenbosch side, who have 16points to their name, moved up into thirdfrom sixth during the last round of match-es in June.
Lenteguer were fortunate to retain thefourth position on the table after losing to0-2 to Aloe High. The result, which is easi-ly the most shocking of the weekend, sawAloe move up from 10th to seventh place.
Portlands High also suffered a surpris-ing defeat in their fixture against BeaconHill. The 3-0 victory saw Beacon Hillclimb from 11th to ninth, while Portlands
retained fifth place.Westridge occupy sixth place, ahead of
Aloe and Glendale in seventh and eighthrespectively. All three teams have earned10 points in the tournament and are sepa-rated by goal difference only.
Heideveld went into this round of fix-tures in last place on the table, havingearned only two points. However, theyhave moved up two places to 14th thanksto a 3-1 victory over Belgravia. The defeatsaw Belgravia drop down to tenth, belowBeacon Hill, from eighth place.
Tafelsig and Rocklands had differingfortunes this weekend, but both teamshave clung to their respective 11th and12th spots. Rocklands’ 3-0 victory overWestridge did not affect their log position.
Spine Road High claimed a 2-0 victoryover fellow stragglers Princeton thisweekend, but the results did little to affectpositions at the bottom of the table.
The last four teams on the league tableare Spine Road (7), Heideveld (5), Prince-ton (3) and Cedar (2).
The league resumes next weekend, butthe games will not be played at the at theRocklands Sports Complex. The venuewas not confirmed at the time of going toprint.
