$190M Bridge Project Garners21-Shovel Salute GroundbreakingMaj. Gen. Thomas Katkus, who lobbied

for bridge funding in Juneau last session, said the bridge will boost training opportuni-ties at the Delta and Tanana Flats militaryranges. Access to those training grounds cur-rently relies on a seasonal ice bridge acrossthe Tanana. “I see a bridge, but I also see unbelievable

opportunity for the safety and security of thisnation,” he said. The new bridge, however, also carries

dreams that go beyond those traininggrounds. Sen. John Coghill said he’s heard people

pondering an Alaska rail extension to theeast since he was a boy growing up inNenana. He views the bridge project as thefirst phase of that long-awaited transporta-tion link. “We’ve got a long way to go before we hit

Canada,” Coghill said. “We’re going to getthere, as far as I’m concerned.” Those thoughts were echoed by Rep. Eric

Feige, who said his “ultimate dream” is a railproject that will eventually connect Alaskawith the Lower 48.

Fairbanks North Star BoroughAssemblyman Tim Beck was part of anAlaska Department of Transportation teamthat surveyed a proposed rail route from

Eielson Air Force to the Canada border. Thatoccurred in 1982. “It’s not like this is a new concept, but it’s

good to see it happen,” Beck said.

Infrastructure Still Stagnatesand even larger decreases in public sectorconstruction investments,” said KenSimonson, the association’s chief economist, noting that private sector spending on con-struction has grown by 5.5 percent since July2010 while public sector demand declinedby 8.8 percent during the same time period. “Construction employment continues to

be stuck in a pattern where there are just asmany hot spots as there are slow spots.”Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, Texas,

added more construction jobs (10,400 jobs, 6percent) than any other metro area during thepast year while Lake County-KenoshaCounty, Ill.-Wis., added the highest percent-age (22 percent, 2,900 jobs). Other areasadding a large number of jobs included theChicago-Joliet-Naperville area (7,100 jobs,5 percent); Warren-Troy-Farmington Hills,Mich. (3,800 jobs, 10 percent); Edison-NewBrunswick, N.J. (3,500 jobs, 9 percent) andthe Detroit -Dearborn-Livonia area (3,400jobs, 18 percent). The largest job losses were in the Los

Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale area (minus7,000 jobs, minus 7 percent); followed byAtlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, Ga. (minus5,500 jobs, minus 6 percent); Las Vegas-Paradise, Nev. (minus 4,400, minus 10 per-cent); Philadelphia (minus 3,800 jobs, minus

6 percent); and New York City (minus 3,400jobs, minus 3 percent). Redding, Calif.(minus 19 percent, minus 600 jobs) lost thehighest percentage. Other areas experiencinglarge percentage declines in constructionemployment included Wilmington, N.C.(minus 17 percent, minus 1,600 jobs);Montgomery, Ala. (minus 16 percent, minus1,100 jobs) and Panama City-Lynn Haven-Panama City Beach, Fla. (minus 16 percent, minus 800 jobs).Association officials said the two most

important steps Washington officials couldtake to boost construction employment arepassing long-term infrastructure bills andreconsidering many of the costly regulatoryobstacles that have been put in place. Theynoted that even as highway and transit legis-lation has languished, state and local officialsare being forced to spend billions of limitedtransportation funds on butterfly bridges andbat-safe highway lighting.“It’s like we are trying to rebuild our econ-

omy with two hands tied behind our back,”said the association’s chief executive officerStephen E. Sandherr. “We’re penny pinchingon infrastructure even as we allow entitle-ment spending to spiral out of control, whilewe are doing a lot of things to inflate the costand delay the completion of infrastructureprojects.”

Deere 850K Dozer Jointly Designed by Operators, EngineersAfter years of working side-by-side with customers to

help improve job site productivity, John Deere has intro-duced the 850K crawler dozer with a new Interim Tier IV(IT4) engine and dual-path hydrostatics.Just one of the hundreds of Deere customers that con-

tributed over the last few years to the company’s new dozerdesign was veteran crawler operator Rob Anderson.“The 850K’s design shows that Deere listened to our sug-

gestions and ideas from the get-go,” Anderson said. “We col-laborated with the engineers the whole way and theyresponded to our needs by making the changes we suggest-ed in the cab, in the cooling system. Everywhere. I wasextremely proud when I saw the 850K roll off the line. Deerehit a home run and I’m thrilled to have been involved.”Ideal for earthmoving contractors, road builders and site

prep specialists, the 205-hp (153 kW) 850K features the pro-ductivity, control and smoothness inherent to a dual-pathhydrostatic transmission while the new IT4-certified engineallows customers to meet the latest emissions regulationsand bid specifications. In response to customer suggestions for noise-level reduc-

tion both inside and outside the cab, the new 850K also fea-tures viscous cab mounts that reduce noise to the operator’sear by 45 percent.“When you sit in the machine, close the doors and start it

up, you really have to pay attention,” Anderson said. “Whenit’s idling, you ask yourself, ‘Is it running?’ And when youput it to work at full RPMs the noise level is so low that youcan carry on a conversation or listen to the radio. Vibrationfrom the cab is nonexistent and that’s a huge improvement.”“Customers also asked for serviceability improvements to

the cooling system, which led to us incorporating our V-coolpackage,” explained Dan Drescher, Deere’s crawler productmarketing manager. “With a V-cool package fan box thatfolds down, core clean-out of the cooler is quick and easyfrom both sides. Customers will spend more time in the cabbeing productive and less time outside performing mainte-nance.”“I thought that cooling package improvements were a big,

big thing for us to ask for,” said Anderson. “I wasn’t expect-ing to see improvements to both the radiator and the coolingpackage.“It’s so easy now how the grill folds out. The swing-out

doors on both sides are easily removed and there are no boltsto take off. It’s great for accessibility to the grill and debriscleaning, and in terms of serviceability, this is huge.”

New IT4-Certified EngineThe John Deere PowerTech 6.8-L IT4 diesel provides

either 187 or 205 hp (139 or 153 kW) at 1,800 rpm, depend-ing on machine configuration, and provides better low-endperformance and quicker recovery when operating in the1,500 to 1,800-rpm range, according to the manufacturer. The new engine uses cooled EGR technology with

exhaust filters, Deere’s solution to meet 2011 EPA emissionsregulations. The engine’s diesel particulate filters are cleaned automat-

ically during routine operation, which increases overallmachine productivity as there is no need to idle down formaintenance. The Deere IT4 engine also offers operation on slopes up

to 45 degrees while maintaining adequate oil flow tomachine systems.A hydraulically driven cool-on-demand fan operates only

as needed, which decreases cab and bystander noise levels

and cuts fuel consumption. Fan reverse functionality alsocomes standard to blow out debris.

Dual-Path HydrostaticsDeere’s dual-path hydrostatic system automatically

matches machine power and speed to load demand, elimi-nating the need for inefficient gear systems. Full power isavailable to the tracks while turning with a load — there’s noloss of productivity while turning.Inside the cab, customers will find greater comfort due to

larger access doors and more interior room. Ample glass andwell-positioned in-cab components provide visibility to theblade. The 850K also features a sealed switch module withkeyless start, a 24-volt electrical load center, a standard stor-age space and a grade control monitor. An air suspension seatis standard.

Blade ConfigurationsThe 850K’s new outside dozer (OSD) blade has a three-

hole blade pitch with screw-type fine-tune adjustment forinfinite settings. Sloped cross-members provide lateralstrength and visibility to the rear of the blade. Its raised posi-tion allows for additional clearance at the end of a push. The Power-Angle-Tilt (PAT) configuration has four posi-

tions: forward, forward/mid, back/mid and back. This helpsthe customer to quickly set desired blade pitch for differentapplications, according to the manufacturer.Six different 850K configurations are available: the 850K

OSD, 850K WT (wide track) OSD, 850K LGP (low groundpressure) OSD, 850K LT (long track) PAT, 850K WLT PAT,and 850K LGP PAT.For more information, visit www.JohnDeere.com.

The 850K dozer incorporates customer input.

Chicago Pneumatic CP 4608 and CP 4611 Rivet Bustersare designed to offer precise control through a high power-to-weight ratio and a teasing throttle for progressive hitting

frequency. The teasing throttle feature is part of a controlled power

system (CPS) that is designed to prevent blank firing when

a unit’s rubber bumper is 75-percent worn. At that point theoutward movement of the rivet buster’s upper and lowersleeves opens bleeding ports for air, causing the piston tostop in its lower position as air is exhausted above the toolretainer. Originally designed for removing rivets and various other

metal applications, the CP 4608 and CP 4611 rivet bustersalso are used for concrete demolition and bridge work, sincethey are said to have approximately the same hitting poweras a 60 lb. (30 kg) breaker for half its weight. The Chicago Pneumatic rivet busters are available in

choice of cylinders. The CP 4608 features an 8-in. (20 cm)cylinder with 1,080 bpm and the CP 4611 has an 11-in. (28cm) cylinder, 720 bpm. The Boyer valve and the long pistonstroke is designed to deliver the power needed on most jobs.A stepped cylinder configuration is designed to prevent acci-dental ejection of the hardened steel piston from the cylin-der.CP Rivet Busters come with a choice of forged steel han-

dle. There is an open grip handle with outside trigger or a D-shaped handle with inside-the-handle trigger.Typical applications for the CP Rivet Busters include

bridge deck work where the weight of breakers is restricted,de-capping foundation pillars where concrete is very hard, demolition of medium- to hard-concrete, or as an alternativeto paving breakers where high hitting power is needed butthe work space is limited or the task calls for working hori-zontally.For more information, visit www.cp.com.

FlangeLock Contamination Control Tool ReceivesFlangeLock LLC, founded and based in

Greenwich, Conn., received a patent fromthe U.S. Patent Office within the past twomonths for its contamination control tool, the FlangeLock. The FlangeLock tool is an easy-to-use cap

that slides onto the fitting and is sealed withone turn of the bottom plug, keeping oil inand contaminants out. It is produced in sizes for 8, 10, 12, 16, 20,

24 and 32 in codes 61, 62 and KAT-stylehydraulic flanges.The FlangeLock is manufactured in

Connecticut with lightweight anondized alu-minum. The FlangeLock is color-coded foreasy-to-identify sizes.“The FlangeLock represents major sav-

ings in a number of areas,” Mike Pearl, partowner of FlangeLock LLC, said. “It willsave time because there won’t be any oilleaking and having to be cleaned up. It willsave money because again, with no leaks, nooil is wasted. And a really big savings will bewith EPA cleanups. The EPA is looking at alot of equipment right now and a lot of com-panies are being temporarily shut down inorder to get things cleaned up. TheFlangeLock will cut way down on that losttime and money.”Equipment owners seeking to stop oil

leaks are not the only ones who benefit fromthe FlangeLock. Pearl foresees the factorieswhere the equipment is manufactured beingable to use the FlangeLock during theassembly process to keep contaminants fromentering the lines and, if a customer desires, selling them on the equipment. As well, “hoses get cleaned and capped

when you buy them,” Pearl said, “but there’snothing to keep the caps on. A customerbuys some hoses, tosses them into the backof a truck, the caps come off and those newhoses are already contaminated. The con-taminants get into the machine, and there’s aproblem. We have the solution.” Since the FlangeLock’s inception in 2009,

the company’s dealership network has sub-stantially grown. Initially the product wasdistributed only throughwww.flangelock.com and HO Penn, head-quartered in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Today, theFlangeLock can be found across the UnitedStates and Canada through such dealers asCleveland Brothers, based in Harrisburg,Pa.; Edward Ehrbar Inc., Yonkers, N.Y.;SunSource, with many branches throughoutthe United States; Genesis Attachments;Jewell Attachments; Finning CAT ofCanada; HosePower USA, with branchesacross the United States; Dakota Fluid

Power, with branches in the Dakotas andNebraska; Progressive Hydraulics, withbranches in New Jersey and New York State;and many more. And with the FlangeLock’s ever-growing

distributorship, Pearl said he’s hoping toapproach selling 10,000 pieces sold by theend of 2011, as well as continuing to expandwith additional distributorships. For more information call Mike Pearl at

Stereotyped as Rednecks, Griffin’s Crew Earned RespectGriffin took to the immense clean-up

project with more than good citizenship, which virtually everyone in America wasfeeling at that moment. Cynicism and parti-sanship had been quickly shelved in thosepost-attack days. American flags flew every-where and there was no shortage of volun-teer help available. But Griffin also was vice president of a

family firm, D.H. Griffin WreckingCompany, which in 2001 had been aroundfor more than 40 years. He knew demolitionand he knew he wanted to put himself in aposition to help New York City begin toshake off the effects of its catastrophic struc-tural collapse.Ten years later, Griffin looks back on the

days that followed his arrival in New YorkCity with the same down-to-earth, pragmat-ic calm that stood him in good stead in thedays of national panic. He declines to talkabout it at length, embellishes nothing in thetelling, and seems unchanged by the headyexperience of being a major player in NYCrecovery efforts while the whole worldwatched. He received no special public hon-ors for his work, nor is his name engravedon plaques around the city. He likes that justfine.“The heroes were the firemen and rescue

responders who worked and died that day,”he said quietly from his office in Greensboroalmost precisely a decade after his fatefuldrive to New York. “They’re the ones whodeserve the honors.”Griffin’s story, however, deserves recall-

ing, heroic or not, because it is about con-struction and demolition expertise, personalgumption and character. It also is about aman from the rural South who had the chutz-pah to take on New Yorkers on their ownconcrete-and-asphalt turf and win theirrespect. “They called us all kinds of names,” a

North Carolina newspaper quoted Griffintelling some Kiwanis club members the yearafter the towers fell. He and a few D.H.Griffin crew members working with himwere rudely, if teasingly, stereotyped. “Theythought for sure I was a redneck from NorthCarolina. They called us the Clampetts andasked if we sat around and played banjos onour porches.”

R.E.S.P.E.C.TThe day Griffin arrived in New York City,

he parked his wife and children in a hotel, put on a hardhat and walked toward thedebris-laden site. To get there, he had tocross two barricaded lines. The first line, fiveblocks from the scene, was unguarded andhe just walked through it without challenge. At the second barricaded line a block far-

ther on, police and National Guardsmen

patrolled. Griffin looked wistfully beyondthem toward the destruction. The serendipi-tous arrival of a Salvation Army donut truckat that moment distracted the armed guards, and Griffin took a deep breath, crossedthrough, and walked on ahead. This mayhave been the only 2001 security failure thatno one rues today.Griffin was appalled by what he saw at the

scene, including piles of debris 50 ft. (15 m)high. He walked over to where variousemergency department employees wereworking through 15-ft. (4.5 m) high moundsof debris in the street, the outer edge of theremains of one of the towers. At one point, the workers labored in the

shadow of an upright steel girder that poseda threat to their safety, and discussion beganabout how to remove it. Griffin spoke up,revealing a Southern accent notably differentfrom everyone else on the site as well as evi-dent knowledge of how to proceed. Peopleturned to him wondering who the heck hewas. It was the beginning of a general recogni-

tion of Griffin’s demolition expertise.Engineers on site began to consult with him, though he was not yet deemed to be an

authority: It took two full days for New YorkCity Mayor Rudy Giuliani to put him incharge of demolition — not bad for a “red-neck.” General respect for his professional judg-

ment was still to come, however. It arrivedabout two weeks later when on-site debateensued about removal of a steel curtain wallthat stood shakily 12 stories high.Contractors wanted to call in cranes, hoistworkers with torches, and cut the structureapart where it stood. Griffin and his compa-ny workmates, including his cousin RustyGriffin, thought the crane approach too time-consuming and unsafe. As skeptics watched, Griffin simply

attached cables to the huge upright shard andpulled it back and forth till it toppled. In lessthan an hour, the structure was down andbeing cut apart safely on the ground. “Getting that curtain wall down saved

millions of dollars,” Griffin said. “Therewasn’t anyone else around to make suchdecisions. We had the ability to make thedecision and to move on.”The decision cemented his reputation as a

decisive leader, a label he had begun to earna few days earlier when he had summarily

fired a contractor that wasn’t fulfilling theterms of its contract. Griffin was subse-quently told he had fired a Mafia-front com-pany, which he admits concerned him for afew days.Working from a trailer parked a block

from the site, Griffin and other clean-up per-sonnel settled into a 24-hour-a-day, 7-days-a-week removal process. His quartersimproved in a few months. His office wasmoved to the American Express Tower, alsoknown as the Three World Financial Center, after it was repaired, having been heavilydamaged by the falling towers. However, his work schedule didn’t

change much. Many 100-hour weeks wererecorded by Griffin along with everyone elseworking there. Griffin said he was awayfrom the site 19 days in 8 months. “It was stressful,” he said. “It was tough,

tiring in many ways.”

Looking BackGriffin smoothly transitioned back to

work with the family company after thetwin-tower clean-up was completed in 2002— four months ahead of schedule and hun-dreds of millions of dollars under budget. His was a successful stewardship by justabout any yardstick, and at the end of it,Griffin simply resumed work at D.H. GriffinWrecking. In 2009, the company was listedby Demolition & Recycling International asthe 6th largest demolition / recycling compa-ny in the world.Today, David H. Griffin Jr. is president of

the companies, which includes affiliatednew construction, environmental, site prepa-ration and general contracting divisions. Itscorporate office still is in Greensboro, but thecompany operates from offices in eightstates from Virginia to Texas. Griffin’s fatherwho founded the company still puts in a fullday and is, Griffin said, “the real boss.” What Griffin took away from the New

York City experience was many memories, some of which he obviously is reticent totalk about. He said it seems like it happenedthree or four years ago, not 10 years. “It has gone fast.”Memories aside, Griffin talks mostly

about the excruciating demands placed uponeveryone working the project — physical, emotional, and spiritual — as well as therelationships forged.“It was a lot of pressure and the stakes

were as high as they get,” he said. “It waspretty much a baptism by fire. Looking back,I learned an awful lot. I was hoeing a roughrow, but I had a lot of good, smart peopleworking with me.”Construction equipment called in to dis-

mantle, separate, load and haul away themountains of fallen-building debris was not

Griffin and other clean-up personnel worked a 24-hour-a-day, seven-days-a-weekremoval process.

Cranes, dump trucks and excavators with grapple attachments were used to dis-mantle, separate, load and haul away the mountains of debris.

W 250 Heads Lineup of Wirtgen Cold Milling MachinesThe big, new W 250 cold

milling machine from WirtgenAmerica Inc. was introduced toNorth America at Conexpo-Con/AGG 2011 in Las Vegas inMarch. It joins two new large cold mills

introduced in 2010: the new W 200single engine model — which is alarge but compact milling machinethat can be equipped with millingdrum assemblies of 59, 79, or 87in. (150, 200 or 221 cm) workingwidth — and the similarly sized W210 dual engine model, offeringmore power at lower fuel con-sumption.The launch of the W 250

marks the advent of a high-performance cold millingmachine with a maximumpower rating of 980 hp(730.5 kW). The new largemilling machine can removeup to 1,300 tons (1,179 t) ofasphalt per hour.Like the W 210, the W

250 incorporates Wirtgen’sdual engine concept, whichallows milling with oneengine at 610 hp (454 kW),or milling with two enginesat a more powerful 980 hp(730 kW). Six different millingwidths ranging from 87 in. to 14.4ft. (221 cm to 4.4 m). The W 250 also is equipped

with WIDRIVE, the intelligentWirtgen machine managementsystem, which not only eases theworkload of the operator, but alsoguarantees fuel efficient and envi-ronmentally compatible milling, according to the manufacturer. The W 250 is able to mill large

job sites on dual-lane highways —or airport runways — at top speed. The Wirtgen W 250 can removeasphalt layers with a milling depthof up to 13.8 in. (35 cm) — andtough portland cement concretepavements — at a high advancerate.

WIDRIVE: IntelligentMachine ManagementIn addition to removing com-

plete pavement sections in a singlepass, individual layers also can beremoved very economically. Theintelligent WIDRIVE machinemanagement system, the threeselectable milling drum speeds andthe dual engine concept keep theoperating costs low. The dual engine concept in the

W 250 essentially gives the ownertwo machines in one: a high-per-formance milling machine with thefull power of its two engines, and a

cost-efficient mid-range millingmachine that can operate with thereduced power of just one engineto economically remove softerasphalt surface courses or porousasphalt, for example, or for travel, according to the manufacturer. In order to optimize fuel con-

sumption, milling output and theoverall efficiency of the W 250, byusing a selector switch, themachine operator can set the mostsuitable milling drum speed for thejob at hand directly from the oper-ator’s platform. This means that the ideal milling

output can be achieved even underunpredictable milling conditions,by directly switching to the opti-mal speeds during the milling

process. For example, in the case of stan-

dard milling jobs, such as removalof a surface course, the W 250operates with the medium millingdrum speed of 1,800 rpm, produc-ing the milled asphalt in desiredparticle sizes. When removing thinsurfaces at the maximum advancerate, the high milling drum speedof 2,000 rpm can be selected, pro-ducing a superior milling texture. And to achieve maximum millingoutput while keeping costs low, thelowest speed of 1,600 rpm can bethe right choice for completeremoval, as it guarantees reducedfuel consumption and low cuttingtool wear. The standard milling width of

the W 250 is 7.2 ft. (2.20 m). Thiscan be optionally extended by fit-ting the machine with additionalmilling drum units for workingwidths of 8.2 ft. (2.50 m), 10.2 ft.(3.10 m), 11.5 ft. (3.50 m), 12.5 ft.(3.80 m), up to a maximum 14.4 ft.(4.40 m).

Optimal WorkEnvironment

The W 250 operating platformprovides the operator with an opti-mal work environment, whichspeeds productivity and providesan abundance of operating infor-mation.Part of this intuitive operating

environment — a multifunctionalcontrol display — operates as apractical information hub. It can beswung to the left or right of theoperator — together with the levelpro control panel — and displaysoperating status and servicing datain an easily comprehensible way.The control display provides

user-friendly diagnostic optionswith clear graphics for identifyingthe source of any problem. Anotherhandy function is the logging ofjob data: at the end of the day, thelog can show how many truckshave been loaded and the overall

tonnage that was achieved.Like the W 200 and W 210 cold

mills, the new W 250’s parallel-to-surface (PTS) system automatical-ly aligns the W 250 parallel to theroad surface. The system ensuressimple, accurate operation of themachine in demanding profilingjobs. PTS also assists the operatorwith positioning the machine in themilled cut to initiate the millingprocess. In automatic mode, thesystem takes care of all the stepsthat the operator would otherwiseneed to select manually one afteranother; the need for repetitiousmanual correction is eliminated. The operator activates the inte-

gral level pro control system at theflick of a switch, and all fourcrawler track units of the largemilling machine are loweredsimultaneously at high speed. When the milling drum unit reach-es the surface to be milled, the low-ering speed is reduced and themilling drum slowly penetrates thematerial down to the set depth. Theautomatic process helps to preventexcessive cutting tool wear or eventool failure when commencing themilling operation. The same applies when the W

The W 250 is able to mill large job sites on dual-lane highways — or air-port runways — at top speed. The Wirtgen W 250 can remove asphaltlayers with a milling depth of up to 13.8 in. (35 cm).

The W 250 joins the W 200single engine model

and the similarlysized W 210dual engine

model.

Allen Introduces NewMP 315 Riding Trowel

The Allen MP 315 is a total re-design of the MP 305 mechanical drive riding trow-el. It is an entry level riding trowel with the features found in larger riders. The high-er horsepower gasoline engine and heavy-duty drive train is packed in an easy-to-service frame. The standard-duty gearboxes and four-bladed rotors are proven per-formers in the field, according to the manufacturer.

The MP 315 is now equipped with a torque converter clutch, which gives theoperator full variable speed control of the rotors. The MP 315 is one of the latestadditions to Allen’s Mechanical Pro (MP) Series of Riders being launched for2011.

MP 315 standard features include:• Manual steering and blade pitch controls• A GX690 (688cc) air cooled Honda gasoline engine• Torque converter clutch system• Two 46 inch diameter, 4-blade non-overlapping rotors• Variable rotor speeds up to 145 RPM• Four lights and 12 volt charger

• Electric powered spray system for application of retardant• Flip-up seat and a removable screen for superior accessibility to engine,

clutch and drive-line.For more information, visit www.alleneng.com.

Roadtec’s RX-400 ColdPlaners Get MakeoverRoadtec introduced the RX-400 cold planer three years ago, and since then the

machine has undergone a number of refinements. The machine had been introduced to fill contractors’ needs for a flexible cold planer

with a cutter housing that won’t clog up with narrow cuts. The standard cutting width ofthe RX-400 is 48 in. (120 cm). An optional variable cutting system including 26 and 36in. widths (66 and 90 cm) is available, as is a 60 in. (152 cm) cutting width package.Maximum cut depth is 12.5 in. (32 cm). The RX-400 cutter housing design provides efficient material evacuation even with

deep cuts in clog-prone, loose material, according to the manufacturer. Efficient materi-al evacuation prevents undue wear on cutting teeth and holders and improves produc-tivity. A redesign affecting the stability of the rear leg tube connection point was phased in

soon after production began along with a number of other improvements related to per-formance and operator ergonomics. Recent changes include a new bolt-on design for the right rear leg with a swivel pivot

point for steering. Along with that change all key sizes on the machine’s leg tubes arenow the same and also have been beefed up to increase life span. The RX-400 and theRX-500 both use a common key design now. Several areas of the machine have undergone changes for ease of service and inspec-

tion. For example the rear anti spin valve and rear track drive bulkheads are much moreaccessible and bulk head fittings are being used now for track drive and endgate hosesto make hose changes easier. Additionally the hydraulic system has undergone modifi-cations to prevent excessive leakage at low speed under load. The RX-400 cold planer features a 325 hp (242 kW) Caterpillar C9 ACERT engine,

and a maximum operating speed of 172 feet per minute (52 mpm).

The Allen MP 315 is a totalre-design of the MP 305mechanical drive ridingtrowel.

The new generation Roadtec RX-400 cold planer features a rear-mounted drum.

Compact Tandem Rollers Designed for Tight SpacesDynapac articulated compact tandem rollers

are designed for asphalt compaction in tightspaces, such as streets and pavements in urbanareas. The CC1100, CC1200 and CC1300 models

are available in either a dual steel vibratory drumconfiguration or in a combi version featuringone vibratory drum and four rubber rear tires. The machines are powered by water-cooledKubota diesel engines, which are designed torun quietly and fuel efficiently. The CC1100 weighs 5,070 lbs. (2,300 kg)

and features a 42-in. (107 cm) drum width; theCC1200 weighs 5,360 lbs. (2,431 kg) and has a47-in. (119 cm) drum; and the larger CC1300weighs 8,270 lbs. (3,751 kg) and features a 51in. (129 cm) wide drum. The CC1300 is consid-ered suitable for compacting sub-bases and basecourses and can follow a small paver, accordingto the manufacturer. The CC1100 and CC1200 feature drum

diameters of 27 in. (68.5 cm), while the CC1300has a 32-in. (81 cm) drum diameter, makingthese models especially effective on soft asphaltcompounds. In addition, the ratio of drum diam-eter to static linear load will help reduce the riskof surface cracks. The high clearance at thedrum edge is designed to facilitate compactionclose to high curbs. With the combi versions of the three models,

the rubber tires are operated in pairs by sepa-rate drive motors. This can reduce the risk ofmarring newly laid asphalt when makingturns, according to the manufacturer. The Dynapac articulated compact tandem

rollers are built using common parts to ensurebetter parts availability and to help retainresale values. They are equipped with a highcapacity, corrosion-free, impact-resistantwater tank. Three separate filters help alleviateproblems of clogged sprinkler nozzles. Theentire sprinkler system is configured to bedrained easily with a few simple hand opera-tions.The model range features redesigned

ergonomic controls, as well as handgrips andboarding steps designed to make it safer to geton and off the machine. The CC line alsocomes equipped with standard features suchas a sideways sliding seat, dual driving con-trols and working lights. The new model range features lower oper-

ating costs for any paving contracting opera-tion, big or small, while improved ergonomicsand visibility help increase productivity for theprofessional compaction operator. Options areavailable to configure the machines to a con-tractor’s specific application needs. For more information, visit www.dyna-

pac.us. With the combi versions of the three models, the rubber tires are operated inpairs by separate drive motors.

EXACTCOMPACT HELPS SPEED COMPACTION BY MONITORING IMPACT SPACINGTake a high-frequency Sakai roller and you can speed compaction. With EXACTCOMPACT, you can be sure that you’re rolling at the precise impact spacing.EXACTCOMPACT is a simple visual monitor: Red = You’re rolling too fast. Yellow = You’re rolling too slow. Green = You’re right on target to reach density at the fastest possible ground speed. EXACTCOMPACT is standard on mainline Sakairollers – optional on all others. Put it to work on your next HMA job.

Intelligent Speed ControlEnsures Maximum Traction250 is aligned transverse to the direc-tion of travel. In many cases, coldmilling machines need to overcomesignificant differences in height whenbeing moved into or out of the milledcut. The integrated four-fold, full-floating axle balances out all fourtrack units quickly and reliably toreduce the machine’s lateral inclina-tion to a minimum. This lends a highdegree of stability to the large millingmachine.

The W 250’s intelligent speed con-trol (ISC) system ensures maximumtraction. The ISC system is particu-larly useful for highly demandingmilling jobs. Just like the traction controlsystem of a car, ISC prevents crawler trackslip and ensures perfect traction of all trackunits to achieve maximum milling perform-ance, reducing track pad wear, according tothe manufacturer.

When negotiating bends, the ISC systemautomatically increases the speed of theouter crawler tracks, depending on the steer-ing angle. As a result, even extremely narrow

bends can be milled using the all-track drive.Automatic adjustment of the advance rate tomatch the diesel engine load always ensuresmaximum performance yet quiet operationof the machine.

A vacuum cutting system will removedust, fines and smoke from the cutter cham-ber and extract it out the conveyor, keepingthe machine cleaner and prolonging compo-nent life.

The W 250 incorporates Wirtgen’s dual engineconcept, which allows milling with one engineat 610 hp (454 kW), or milling with two enginesat a more powerful 980 hp (730 kW).

Co. President Reticent onSome Aspects of Tragic Jobexotic at all — mostly cranes, heavy dumptrucks and excavators with grapple attach-ments because the steel girding was too largefor shearing and had to be torched apart. Nospecial machinery was required and, headded, nothing that has come on the marketsince 2001 would have been used instead. The project was, he suggested, just anotherdemolition job but on a horrifically largescale. “It was,” Griffin observed, “the super

bowl of the demolition industry.”Griffin also came away with renewed

confidence about running projects andcrews.“I learned some new management skills,”

he said, “what with being involved with 28different agencies and all the maneuveringand figuring out how to work though the dif-ferent agencies. There were so many movingparts and you had to tiptoe around to getwhat we wanted. Now when I’m workingwith only three agencies, it feels like a cake-walk.”He said he learned some more things

about how to work with people. “There was so much emotion, so I learned

some new negotiating skills.”His straight-forward approach to demoli-

tion problems, which landed him the man-agement position, continued to operate forthe duration of the project. “We would make a plan and we would

move forward,” he recalled of the workdays. “I’d say, ‘You can’t talk it down. Youcan only study something so long. You ain’tgoing to talk it down.’ So we would make aplan and implement it and go.”Griffin said that “a lot of things we learned

in New York, we use now on other sites.”There are many opportunities to do so: TheD.H. Griffin Companies network has 1,000employees and a 600-piece equipment fleet. The company annually produces more than$400 million in project revenue.

Just One RegretGriffin cradles in his memory some

scenes and memories that he doesn’t talkabout, the demolition site also being thedeath site of nearly 3,000 people. The debrisconsisted of more than fractured bricks andmangled steel. Yet as a management exercise and project,

cleaning up the acres and acres of fallenbuildings, crushed cars and destroyed infra-structure was a once-in-a-lifetime experi-ence. Satisfyingly, he could chalk it up as aprofessional success. As a token of the clean-up, Griffin carried

back to Greensboro on a flatbed truck a pieceof one of the core beams of a fallen tower. His only regret, Griffin said, is that he didn’tsalvage a few more pieces of the iconicbuildings.“I wish I had saved more steel,” he said.

“Through the years, I have had a lot ofrequests from fire departments for steel to beused in memorials. At the 10th anniversary,we gave away about 50 pieces.”He spent the 10th anniversary in

Greensboro, incidentally, participating in acouple of 9/11 events in the community, faraway from the ceremonies in New YorkCity. In fact, he has been back to NYC just10 times during the decade since he workedthere, and not at all in the last four or fiveyears. To be in the proximity of the disastersite, now a commemorative site, evidently isnot something he needs in order to bereminded of the tragic event itself and of hisinvolvement in the desperate scramble toclean it up.“Remembering the event just makes me

appreciate what I have,” he said, cuttingshort the interview to return to work. “Everyone of the people who died that day was justdoing his job. That’s all. No different fromme and you.”
