Early this year the facility’s process-ing capabilities were expanded, asTualatin, Ore.-based ConstructionEquipment Company (CEC) stream-lined the facility’s producthandling/preparation operations bycombining the separate processes intoone. The streamlining and efficiencyupgrade was part of a $500,000 designand build contract that included thedesign and installation of new equip-ment and alterations to existing facilityequipment. The services conducted by CEC

enabled the facility to process a typicalyear’s worth of materials during thefirst four months of this year, accord-ing to Gary Smith, owner of CEC.The main service involved the re-

working of the facility’s yard flow, which included the integration ofcrushing and scalping processes toeliminate double handling of materials. To achieve this, CEC built and

installed a new 133 by 152 ft. (40.5 by

46.3 m) horizontal shaft impact crush-er — with a customized 4.3 by 20 ft.(1.3 by 6.1 m) vibrating Grizzly feederand separate conveyor for scalped

material — and installed a new, com-pany-built 2.5 by 60 ft. (0.8 by 18.3 m)stacking conveyor, and an Okada-brand processor for initial materialprep.CEC also custom designed a feeder

system that removes any dirt from thesystem and takes it directly to an exist-ing 5 by 12 ft. (1.5 by 3.7 m) Screen-Itfor dirt removal, scalping, and rock

recovery. The rock is then fed backinto the crushing circuit. As part of the facility redesign, CEC

used and made alterations to the facili-ty’s existing 5 by 16 ft. (1.5 by 4.9 m),three Deck El-Jay finish screen andseveral conveyors.Asphalt processed at the Sunderland

facility is typically over-sized andrequires some downsizing to make itusable for the production of rock. Theasphalt is mixed with concrete as it isfed into the crushing machine to ensurean end product that meets constructionspecifications. Concrete chunksbrought to the facility are downsizedand mixed with asphalt as it is fedthrough the crushing machine to make1.5 in. (3.8 cm) minus aggregate.Construction Equipment Company

provides portable rock crushing andscreening equipment for the aggregate, recycle, compost and wood wasteindustries. The company is currentlyknown for manufacturing the largestscreen machine in the world.

struction, and 3.2 percent in private office construction. The economist said the steep drop in public construction,

which fell for the seventh straight month in April — by 1.9percent — and shrank to a four-year low, was cause for con-cern. “It appears that federal stimulus and military base realign-

ment work are tapering off, while state and local budgets forinfrastructure have been shrinking for some time,” he said. The four largest public categories, accounting for three-

fourths of public construction spending, all declined in April:highway and street construction, minus 1.6 percent; educa-tional, minus 2.7 percent; transportation facilities, minus 3.8percent; and sewage and waste disposal, minus 2.5 percent.Association officials said the mixed results show the

importance of enacting long-term infrastructure funding billsfor transportation, wastewater and drinking water, as well ashaving a tax and regulatory environment that encourages pri-vate investment in structures. “Economic recovery will remain sluggish and uneven

unless construction and the sectors that depend on it share ingrowth,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chiefexecutive officer.

Miller Machinery President Mike Millerhas been tearing down crushers, identifyingtheir problems, machining parts and gettinginvolved in the start-up and evaluation oftheir performance since he was 14 years old.So it’s no small compliment when he saysthat Metso’s HP4 is one of the most versatilepieces of machinery he’s ever used.

“I just think it’s an amazing crusher,” hesaid. “We bought three of them from Metsoand they have been outstanding in everyapplication where we’ve used them.”

As a Metso distributor based inLongview, Wash., Miller covers large areasof the Pacific Northwest, and the demandson his machinery vary considerably. Of thethree HP4s he operates, he said that “We putone in an extremely demanding stationaryapplication in a large quarry in the Seattlearea to replace a failing competitor’smachine; we swapped out another competi-tor’s crusher on a customer’s portable plant;and we have a portable plant we built our-selves which has been very successful inseveral different applications as a rentalunit.”

Consistent OutputThe HP4s have continually yielded high-

er production and produced a consistent out-put gradation due to the unique on-plant feedhopper/belt feeder that helps optimize thechoke level in the cone.

“It’s essential to maintain consistent cavi-ty level in the crusher’s feed hopper to yielda consistent output gradation,” said Miller.“Our HP4 portable plant can handle thatcomfortably with our on-board cone feedbelt and 6 cubic yard feed hopper that canswallow the surges in feed coming from theprimary side of the plant. Our customersinformed us that they were able to achieveless than 1½ percent variance from targetvalues in their gradations, a feat they neverachieved with their previous crushingspreads. ”

Customers also are impressed with thecrusher’s ability to pull upwards of 450amps with absolutely no ring bounce.

“The HP4’s claim to fame is its tremen-dous crushing force and ability to run at tightsettings that were never possible before andpull maximum power from the motor,” saidMiller. “It has exceptionally high tramp

relief forces that virtually eliminate yourconcerns for ring bounce, which is one of theleading causes of catastrophic failure in conecrushers.”

With changing product requirements andthe trend towards finer materials require-ments, the crushed aggregate mix for anasphalt plant requires a lot of power.

“The tighter you can maintain the settingon the cone crusher, the more productive andefficient the crusher will be,” said Miller.“And that’s what really separates the HP4from its competitors.”

Wears ReducedMiller noted that the HP4 has proven to

yield exceptionally good mantle and bowlliner wear life as compared to other conecrushers. A couple of factors influencing thisare that the HP4 design allows for the use ofthicker liners by comparison to the original

HP series cone crushers, which means moremass to wear on. It also has a unique anti-head spin device which significantly reducesliner wear during initial feed stage of opera-tion.

Additionally, the HP4 liners do notrequire epoxy backing material, whichmeans that when they’re replaced cure-timefor the epoxy is eliminated. The resultantincreased availability of the crusher toresume production yields higher annualplant output than previously possible.

Development TeamMiller recently joined the Metso construc-

tion group’s North American CrusherDevelopment Team. Adrian Quigg (VPDistributor Sales, Americas) invited Millerto participate in the team, which had its firstmeeting in York, Pa.

“We focused on reviewing existing prod-

ucts to see where they fit in the market andto identify niche opportunities for other newand improved products,” said Miller. “Wediscussed HPX technologies and identified awide range of applications where we couldput the HP4 to good use to benefit of ourcustomers.”

The group’s goal is to further developcrushing machinery that will most efficient-ly yield the best quality crushed aggregateproducts, while minimizing the overall oper-ation costs, in a safe and environmentallyfriendly manner for the customer.

“Metso’s support and dedication to offer-ing high performance crushing machineryhas been a key factor in allowing our com-pany to be successful in the pursuit of offer-ing our customers results they can count on,”Miller said.

Raptor XL1100 Ideal forHigh-Tonnage Operations

The Raptor XL1100 cone crusher, fromFLSmidth Pekin LLC can draw up to 1,200hp (894 kW), delivering production capabil-ities of up to 2,240 tph (2,000 t) at a 1-1/3-in.(3.3 cm) closed-side setting. Ideal for high-tonnage mining operations, the unit handlesfeed size up to 24 in. (62 cm) and allows areduction ratio of up to 6:4.

The Raptor XL1100 cone crusher incor-porates a heavy-duty hydraulic design thatimproves the durability of the tramp releasecomponents, while reducing the number ofaccumulators required. This hydraulic con-figuration reduces ongoing maintenancecosts while delivering performance and reli-ability, according to the manufacturer.

FLSmidth’s “fail safe” hydraulic protec-tion system also provides an external reliefthat prevents severe structural overloads ifan accumulator bladder should fail — pro-tecting both the hydraulic system and thecrusher. Advanced overload sensing technol-ogy detects crushing force overload. A sim-ple alarm is activated, or the system can beautomated to take corrective action. Thissame advanced automation system can beused to optimize crusher performance, withfeed control, setting adjustment and moni-toring of all critical lubrication and hydraulicparameters.

Powered by a 1,000 hp (745 kW) motor, the XL1100 cone is designed to operate and

remain mechanically sound at a wide rangeof eccentric speeds. Because of this versatil-ity, the eccentric speed can be selected tomaximize throughput, size reduction andproduct yield.

Eccentric surface finish is critical to bear-ing longevity under high-performancecrushing conditions, and the XL1100 cone’sadvanced eccentric is a nodular iron castingof high-strength material with machinabilityand surface finish characteristics. The RaptorXL1100 cone has an alloyed cast steel three-arm frame with one oversized arm used forthe countershaft cartridge.

The Raptor XL1100 cone crusheremploys spiral-bevel gear technology for acombination of durability and reliabilitywhile minimizing gear noise. Available withshorthead or standard bowls, the XL1100cone is practical for secondary, tertiary andquaternary applications. An additional safetyfeature standard on all Raptor models is thecounterclockwise rotation crushing actionthat protects the machine if adjustment ringmovement is excessive or if the ring gearbrake fails, according to the manufacturer.

The growing family of Raptor high-per-formance cone crushers includes the XL300,XL400, XL500, XL600, XL900, XL1100,XL1300 and XL2000.

To everyone else it’s an excava-tor. To Bruce Howard’s team, themachine with its customized suiteof Geith attachments is part dreamcome true and part Swiss ArmyKnife — an incredibly versatiletool, capable of tackling any job,big or small. And Howard hasmore than a few jobs that neededdoing…and doing well. “We’re a small business that’s

been fortunate enough to grow,”said Howard, owner of BruceHoward Contracting in Lenaxa,Va. “We do a variety of projects, from site clearing work to projectsfor utilities, as well as work for res-idential and commercial construc-tion companies. I need machinesand equipment that can be as flex-ible as the jobs we take on.” So with a need to be productive

and profitable on his mind,Howard went to LawrenceEquipment, the Case dealer inAshland, Va. He knew his jobs andcrew would get a boost from amodified excavator and trustwor-thy attachments that were strongand reliable, but also versatile andprecise. He made a list of what hisdream machine would include:wider tracks for maximum flota-tion in wet areas, extended dozerblade, short stick… the list wenton…That’s where Steve Kelly, serv-

ice manager of LawrenceEquipment, came into the picture. The two men had known eachother since Howard’s earliest daysin business when he bought hisfirst equipment from Joe Gomer atGomer Equipment, a widely

respected figure in the region’sconstruction sector.Kelly and Howard did business

occasionally over the years, andKelly was intrigued by this newchallenge. They talked it over andultimately agreed that Geithattachments on the recommendedCX135 excavator would providethe durability, versatility and func-tionality to cover the full spectrumof jobs Howard’s company tack-les.Kelly (along with Sean O’Reilly

at Geith) worked with Howard as aguide and problem solver on theambitious package: a Geithhydraulic quick coupler, shortenedboom, hydraulic progressive linkthumb, 60-in. (152 cm) hydraulic

Geith and Case worked together to design Bruce Howard’s dreammachine.

Rototilt Attachments Usefulfor Wheel Excavators

With the maneuverability of wheeledexcavators, and the flexibility of the Rototiltattachment, this versatile combination isideal for highway, county, or municipalapplications. Very common in Europe, wheeled excavators and the Rototilt attach-ments are becoming more popular in NorthAmerica.Rototilt combines continuous rotation, 40

degree side tilt in each direction, and a

hydraulic quick coupler all in one package. Itallows a bucket or other attachment to berotated and tilted at the same time, making itsimple to operate around or under obstacles, and for any type of ground contouring. Thecombination of continuous rotation and sidetilt lets the worker approach the job from anyangle. For more information call 519/754-2195

or visit www.indexator.us.

Rototilt combines continuous rotation, 40 degree side tilt in each direction, and ahydraulic quick coupler all in one package.

Geith Helps Turn ExcavatorInto a ‘Swiss Army Knife’tilt bucket and 36-in. (91 cm) digging buck-et, the extra-wide tracks and an extra longcustom-welded dozer blade. Modifications completed, all that was left

were the final touches. “We had our painter clean it up and make

it look factory fresh,” said Kelly. “We were chomping at the bit to use this

thing,” Howard said. “They did a lot of workto make this thing right and to make it workfor us. In terms of fit and finish, we couldn’task for anything more.”The moment of truth: taking the “mini on

steroids” (as nicknamed by Howard’s fore-man Jamie Parsley) out on its first job. “Itworked flawlessly,” said Howard. The operator could sit by himself, switch

attachments in a matter of moments and grablogs with the thumb or a piece of concrete onthe fly, according to Howard.“It’s about as close as you can get to dig-

ging with a human hand,” Howard said. Now Howard is taking on new jobs …

unusual jobs… using this machine with itszero tail swing, quick coupler and diversetools. “It allows us to switch buckets and clean

up behind us,” said Howard. “We don’t haveto use additional equipment. We don’t needadditional rentals. So we don’t end up withwasted time.” And there’s no money wasted on excess

rentals, as well, he said. While Howard’s confident the machine

and its Geith attachments will pay off in pro-ductivity, he’s not sure if getting the trickedout machine was the best or worst decisionhe’s ever made.“I’m going to need four more of these

machines because my guys are always fight-ing over who gets to use it” he joked. “Theykeep it looking like new because they knowthat the longer they take better care of it, themore they’ll get to use it. So now it’s theprettiest machine around.”For more information, visit

Genesis Attachments announced major enhancements toits orange-peel type scrap grapples designed to reduce main-tenance, improve durability, lower operating costs andenhance safety.

Available in four models ranging in capacity from .75 to1.5 cu. yds. (.6 to 1.3 cu m), Dan Raihala, Genesis designengineer, said customers can expect more productivity fromthis market-leading design.

“We looked hard at our original design and listened to cus-tomer feedback to identify areas in which improve-ments could be made,” he said. “The first wasin the area of maintenance. The new designfeatures composite bearings with

dust seals at all

pivot points, leaving only the rotation bearing togrease. The heavy-duty cylinder guarding system, designed to protect the cylinders and internalcomponents, is easily removed for mainte-nance.”

Other changes Raihala cited includereverse-mounted cylinders to protectrods from damage, large-borehydraulic cylinders to maximize clamp-ing force, and long-life, abrasion-resistant steel tips that areeasily replaced with a simple perimeter weld.

“We also recognized that our customers want a choice intines, and Genesis now offers the widest variety,” he said.“We provide flat bottom or pointed tine shapes and augmentthem with three spade types — half-, narrow- and wide-width — to meet specific application needs.”

Additional GSG features include large-diameter hardenedsteel pins with integrated shear-proof retainers, high-torque360 degree continuous rotation for better material access andplacement, and an overall footprint designed to easily fitinside trailers.

Montreal-based Major Wire Industries Limited hasnamed Westate Machinery Company as its new screenmedia authorized dealer in Montana, eastern Idaho and partsof Wyoming. The dealership offers all of Major Wire’s screen media

solutions, including the Flex-Mat 3 self-cleaning screenmedia in tensioned and modular versions and optimumwirewoven wire. Westate has worked directly with aggregate andmining customers for more than 60 years, providing screenmedia and other crushing, screening and replacement partsolutions. The dealership has built a reputation for supplying screen

media with very short lead times. This is made possiblebecause Westate keeps track of and stocks the screen mediawire diameters and opening sizes its customers regularlyuse, according to the company.“Westate is an ideal fit for Major Wire’s product line

because they understand how to prove the value of advancedscreen media technology to their customers,” said JeanLeblond, Major Wire president. “Flex-Mat 3 tensioned andmodular helps producers achieve higher throughput, increase screen capacity and production and eliminate com-mon blinding and pegging problems. Combine that withWestate’s commitment to serve its customers with high-quality solutions, and we have a very good team.”Major Wire’s advanced Flex-Mat 3 high-performance,

self-cleaning screen media technology is available in a ten-

sioned version as an alternative to traditional woven wireand a modular version designed to replace polyurethane andrubber modular screen panels. Independently vibratingwires increase product throughput by up to 40 percent overtraditional woven wire or polyurethane panels by increasingscreening action and open area and eliminating blinding, pegging and clogging. Flex-Mat 3 panels provide up to 30percent more screen capacity than woven wire and up to 50percent more screen capacity than polyurethane and rubberpanels, according to the manufacturer. Major Wire’s optimumwire woven wire has a unique

chemical makeup that provides up to 40 percent longer wearlife when compared to traditional woven wire of the samediameter. Delivering a combination of ductility, hardnessand tensile strength, OptimumWire is less susceptible tobreaking in high-impact conditions and with highly abrasivematerials, so it lasts longer and minimizes labor, mainte-nance and lost production costs.“Our 60 years of screen media experience has taught us

that a customer-driven approach is beneficial to both par-ties,” commented Josh Reno, Westate sales manager. “Wetry to be your partner in screening, unlike a lot of typicalhands-off dealerships. We can identify your screen mediaoptions quickly over the phone or make a personal visit todetermine a screening solution for you.”For more information, call 800/999-6676 or visit

Clear Direction ofTaxes, Trade PolicyCould Spur Growthin the U.S. to make that happen,” Rapp said. But Rapp added that the business community needs to

hear more about the government’s plan for taxes, trade andkey drivers like highway construction. Earlier May 19, Caterpillar said its April sales were up 66

percent over a year earlier. Overseas sales that drove thatgrowth are a product of continuing urbanization in develop-ing countries, Rapp said. Rapp added that while not many other companies in

Illinois are publicly joining Peoria-based Caterpillar in itsdrive to push the state to lower worker’s compensation costsand other factors that make it more expensive to do businessin the state, he believes the state’s businesses recognize theneed for changers in Illinois and the country. Caterpillar CEO Douglas Oberhelman earlier this year

complained to Gov. Pat Quinn about the cost of doing busi-ness in Illinois and said the company is regularly courted byother states. Oberhelman later said Caterpillar has no plans tomove.

Cat 775G Off-Road Truck Meets Tough Emissions StandardsThe Cat 775G off-highway

truck sets new performance stan-dards for the model while meetingU.S. EPA Tier IV final emissionsstandards. A combination of newdrive train strategies and a fivepercent power increase over theprevious model enable the 70-ton(63.5 t) payload class truck to holda higher gear when climbing 10percent grades in most applica-tions.A number of new components

and control changes boost effi-ciency. A key is the next genera-tion of Cat transmission controls, named advanced productivityelectronic control strategy. Thesystem enhances productivity, fuelefficiency and drive train durabili-ty, and it enables enhancedmachine control. For example, tobalance fuel savings and produc-tion, two different economy shiftmode selections enable the cus-tomer to tailor performance to theneeds of the business, according tothe manufacturer.Advanced control systems also

integrate the optional engine com-pression brake with automaticretarder control to enable fasterdownhill travel and reduced cycletimes ― without increased fuelconsumption. To meet Tier IV final emissions

regulations in the United States, the Cat C27 ACERT engineincludes the Cat NOx reductionsystem and diesel oxidation cata-lyst. Working in combination withACERT technology, the Cat NOx-reduction system continuallydiverts and cools a small volumeof the engine exhaust gases, thenreturns the cooled gases to thecombustion chamber. This processreduces cylinder temperaturesand, consequently, lowers NOxformation. The no-maintenancediesel oxidation catalyst reduces

certain hydrocarbons in theexhaust. The system requires the use of

ultra low sulfur diesel fuel anddoes not use a diesel particulatefilter. In the European Union andother areas, the 775G will be con-figured to meet EU Stage II emis-sions standards, which is the EUregulation applicable to the poweroutput of the engine. The 775G engine produces net

power of 779 hp (581 kW), andtarget gross weight of the truck is246,500 lbs. (111,811 kg). As withthe previous model, a number ofdifferent body options enable acustomer to configure a truck to

achieve optimum capacity anddurability. The 775G will replacethe 775F when it goes into com-mercial production in the fourthquarter of 2011.

Designs to Help Operators,Maintenance Techs

The 775G also features a newcab and other changes to help theoperator do the job safely and effi-ciently. The operator seat is in thecenter of the cab, which providesmore space for the operator, andthe cab has access and egress fromeither side. The access system isequipped with stairs illuminatedby LED lights.

The new cab provides a 4 dbAreduction in noise experienced bythe operator, which helps the oper-ator fight fatigue over a long workperiod. The left window is electri-cally powered for convenience, and the cab heating and coolingfeature automatic temperaturecontrol. An enhanced cab pre-cleaner is available as an option tofurther increase air quality andextend the lives of HVAC compo-nents.For easy access by maintenance

technicians, the 775G has aground level electrical service cen-ter and diagnostics port on thefront bumper. The Cat VIMS data

collection system now is standardequipment on the 775G. It allowsthe customer to access prognosticand diagnostic information. Theoptional VIMS service light on thefront of the truck will indicate anymachine event that affects per-formance.Fluid level indication and fluid

fill ports are grouped for efficientservice, and fluid filters aregrouped. Filter service intervalsfor steering, hoist/brake and trans-mission/torque converter havebeen increased from 500 to 1,000hours.For more information, visit

Developers Pitch Arena ComplexPlans to Nevada LawmakersBy Michelle Rindels

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) Developersare making a last-minute pitch to lawmakersfor authority to create elaborate arena andevent complexes they say will transformNevada city centers. Senate Revenue and Assembly Taxation

committees June 2 considered a bill author-izing Clark and Washoe counties to establishspecial taxing districts to fund one proposedproject. “This is one of the more exciting opportu-

nities this session. We’re giving communi-ties in Clark County the opportunity to cre-ate jobs in the short and long term,” saidSenate Majority Leader Steven Horsford, D-Las Vegas. Three plans are in play for Las Vegas and

the ultimate decision on which one to backwould be up to local jurisdictions. One proposal seeks to create a stadium at

University of Nevada, Las Vegas surroundedby a shopping center and housing.Proponents said it would reinvent the com-muter culture on campus and forge a bondbetween the school and its students.

A second plan promoted by InternationalDevelopment Management CEO ChrisMilam seeks to create a privately-owned LasVegas National Sports Center that couldaccommodate major league soccer andhockey and minor league baseball. The complex includes an arena, a ballpark

and a stadium and would be located on thewest side of I-15 behind Mandalay Bay. A third plan co-sponsored by the city of

Las Vegas and developer Cordish Companycreates an events center connectingSymphony Park and downtown Las Vegas. Proponents of all three projects urged law-

makers to pass the bill as a way to createconstruction jobs and stimulate the LasVegas economy. SB501 was introduced lateMay 30 by the Senate Finance Committee ina hastily called meeting on the floor. Assemblywoman Marilyn Kirkpatrick,

chairwoman of the Assembly TaxationCommittee, had a litany of questions forproject proponents and said she wanted tohear the nuts and bolts of the financing pro-posal during hearings scheduled over thenext few days. Her committee heard the billthe morning of June 3.
