Crisis, Charity and You: How to Make Your Best Charitable Impact in an Upside Down World

2020 will be remembered in history books as the year that everything changed. The health security and financial security of millions of Americans were put at risk as COVID-19 damaged the US healthcare system and economy in ways that are not yet understood. Philanthropies are less visible victims of the virus, and charities across the country and world are struggling to shore up what were once predictable donations in a now unpredictable world. COMMUNITY CORNER

During the Tribute to George Floyd held on campus on Wednesday, June 9, It became obvious that some of us were not aware of the words to the song “Lift Every Voice and Sing”. Let’s take a quick look at the background of this song and see the words to the first verse. “Lift Every Voice And Sing” was written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson in 1900. Music was written for it in 1905 by his brother, J. Rosamond Johnson. Often referred to as the Black National Anthem, it was first dubbed as such by the NAACP in 1919 because of its power in voicing a cry for liberation and affirmation for African-American people. (It is interesting to note that it was first publicly performed as a poem as a part of a celebration for Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.) It would be good for us all to receive the message contained in the song as we prepare to be able to stand and join in when the occasion arises. Lift every voice and sing, ‘til earth and heaven ring, Ring with the Harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise, High as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea! Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on ‘til victory is won. COMMUNITY NEWS AND UPDATES

FT. MYER’S PRESCRIPTION RUN

We will be making routine visits to Ft. Myer's Andrew Rader Health Clinic for prescriptions (new and refills). These trips will occur every three weeks. The next one is scheduled for Friday, June 26. This service will be offered until restrictions are lifted and residents are able to resume their normal activities. Residents will need to provide their military ID, which will be copied in-house and presented at the Rader Clinic for prescription processing. Please call Jamie at 703.578.7209 to arrange for pick-up/copying of military ID, or

if you have any questions. ~~ Sean Rush, GHA

ELEVATOR SOCIAL DISTANCING

We encourage everyone to maintain a safe distance of six feet or more at all times. What does that mean for elevator rides? Based on advice from health authorities, sharing space for a brief elevator ride is permissible. Be sure not to crowd elevators, and if someone indicates they prefer to ride alone, please allow them that courtesy.

FROM THE HEALTH COMMITTEE

The Health Committee expressed its appreciation to our Administration for all it is doing to keep us safe and healthy. What is disappointing is that some of our residents continue to endanger the health and safety of fellow residents. The restrictions for the control of COVID-19, can be viewed as burdensome and unnecessary, but when one considers the consequences, they are catastrophic! We are, in these times, our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers, and share in the responsibility for each other’s health and security. We must take that responsibility seriously and demonstrate that we do care for one another. We do not have all the answers, but we do know that wearing a mask and maintaining physical distance helps to contain the spread of the virus. The restrictions are not that difficult, so let’s follow them. not only for ourselves, but, all those

we care about. We indeed are in this together. ~~ Nancy Randolph,

VOICES FROM THE GOODWIN HOUSE COCOON

The Salad

In these days of limited offerings on our menus, I look at the variety of stuff that comes in my salad of the day, the salad that’s listed alongside the soup on the dinner menu.

It caught my attention one day when I had nothing else on my mind except eating that salad. It wasn’t just lettuce, spinach, shredded carrots, tomato and other greens. I found little bits of all kinds of things, like bits of dried figs, or grain of some kind. On other days, it might be olives, chickpeas, red beans, green beans, pecans, almonds, pumpkin seeds, apple or grapes. They’re usually just a few tiny bits hiding among the greens. They have to be. They’re in a small salad, after all. But sometimes there are chunks of chicken or maybe turkey, or a blob of tuna or chicken salad, or maybe half of a boiled egg.

I think about Mom a lot these days when eating my salad.

I get the feeling that Mom is trying to sneak in bits of nutrition into my food, hoping I’ll eat it without noticing what’s in it. She’s trying to make sure that, if salad is all I eat, I’m going to get more nutrition out of it than just fiber. But I’m on to her. I know what she’s trying to do.

Our dietician and chef are playing Mom. They must be racking their brains trying to take care I’m fed well and eating healthy foods. I feel like a little kid again. Except, of course, when we get our wine on complimentary wine nights.

My main job now is to take care of myself. Wash my hands often, keep my hands away from my face, stay six feet away from others, and wear my mask when I’m out of my own place. And eat everything in my salad.

CONVERSATIONS ON RACISM

The Spiritual Life Committee at GHBC has begun planning serious conversations on the problem of racism that has been brought to the surface once again in our world. Since this issue is one to be addressed in both houses and among GH leadership as well as members and staff, CEO Rob Liebreich and one of our Black Board members, Tammy Mann, will begin with a conversation to encourage further discussion, planning, and action, especially as the topic pertains to the Goodwin House community internally and in its relationship with the wider community around us.

This conversation will be televised on Channel 2 at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24. For those who do not have the opportunity to view this presentation, information will be forthcoming on further opportunities to see it. The Spiritual Life Committee also is planning a “listening session” as follow-up, with a panel of Black residents and staff sharing their experiences. Watch for further information in a coming West Winds. After these programs there will be an opportunity for resident discussion and follow-up in small groups in person or on Zoom.

HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE TO DUNK A STAFF MEMBER?

Now is your chance!

Let’s cool things down this season with a staff dunk tank! Join us on Friday, June 26, at 4:00 p.m. on the front lawn and see what staff members will be taking the plunge! Want your chance at doing the dunking? Each resident will get one throw, so start warming up those arms! Let’s kick off the weekend with some fun in the sun! (weather permitting)
