My origins and early career

Born in the east of Zimbabwe where I grew up on a farm and I believe is the origin of my solutions focussed mentality where often under testing events you learn to adapt to circumstances and use what is at your disposal.

Due to the rural nature of the country and the location of our farm, I attended boarding school for my entire schooling. Apart from academic learning this was the foundation for developing a sound understanding of camaraderie and the value of being a team player, being resilient and self sufficient, amongst many other key values.

After completing my national service I was afforded the opportunity of commencing my working career with a manufacturing organisation, Turner & Newall a British multinational as an Industrial Engineering Technician. The organisation sponsored my studies at the then Salisbury Polytechnic.

My role upon qualification included manufacturing process improvement and quality responsibility for two factories in Zimbabwe, one in Zambia and a subsidiary in Malawi. This later extended to include a factory in South Africa.

An early start to what was to become a multinational skillset………..

My career moves on….

During the latter part of my tenure at Turner & Newall I had become more and more involved in training - more by necessity than design and that prompted my relocation to South Africa where I was appointed as Training Officer on a large Sugar Estate and Mill employing some 1000 agricultural and factory workers. My remit included responsibility for all training from the management of the apprentice programme, technical operations training, safety training, managerial and supervisory training. During this time I also obtained my degree.

Realising that if my career within Human resources was to progress I had to move into mainstream HR. I assumed a position at a greatly reduced remuneration as Personnel Officer with Dunlop Flooring. After only 6 months I was promoted to Divisional Personnel Manager with the Industrial Division which produced Mining and Automotive products in 4 separate factories, collectively employing some 1500 people.

In order to progress my career plan I was appointed as Training & Development Manager with Johnson & Johnson. This was at a time when the Sullivan Principles where being introduced to American multinationals operating in South Africa. This in conjunction with my training role initiated my exposure into the broader HR field with involvement in Affirmative Action and an initiation into a unionised environment. This exposure was very influential in shaping my later career. I involved myself as this was of great personal interest.

My career moves on….

My first really significant strategic appointment came as Human Resources Director with Central news Agency a leading retailer with some 360 national branches, a card manufacturing plant under license from Hallmark and employed some 3000 employees.

Following a very successful launch of an accelerated management development programme and the sale of the business I was approached to be the preferred outsourced vendor for human resource services to the organisation. To accept that challenge I was the Founder of Pathfinders as an outsourced human resource provider. In addition to providing a broad range of HR solutions the business supported entrepreneurs in the formation and start-up of SME’s with services ranging from research, business plan preparation, presenting to investors, due diligence, finance, sales and marketing. A one-stop start-up solutions provider……….

Albeit that it was one of the oldest brands in the country and 1 of the top 5 retailers it presented many challenges including very hgh profile Union relations, recognition negotiation, dispute handling and wage negotiations. During my tenure at CNA I developed my first commercially focussed HR strategy to modernise human resources delivery, implement significant value adding change programmes and move the people agenda into the 20th century through automation and innovation

My career takes on a broader international dimension…

Developing a international human resource skillset has always been high on my agenda due to my very passionate interest in diversity both in people and business. The opportunity was presented by AlanDick a global Telecoms infrastructure provider with the option of remaining in Africa or relocating to Europe. We opted for the latter and I assumed Regional responsibility for Sub Saharan, North Africa and the Middle East. Shortly after joining, my remit evolved to a global one spanning Europe and APAC.

Grafton Employment Group is a global solutions business with some 70 offices in 16 countries. Through a network of specialised brands provides a comprehensive range of services including Recruitment and Selection, Leadership Development, Payroll Outsourcing, Human Resources Consultancy, FDI and Site Selection Consultancy, Executive Search, Employer Branding, Recruitment Process Outsourcing, Specialist Permanent Recruitment, Talent Monitoring and Mapping amd Vendor Managed Solutions. As Global Human Resources Director I supported the CEO in a re-engineering programme that delivered Revenue growth of 27%, Gross Profit growth of 24% and cost reductions of 21%. In addition built an efficient Global Human Resource function that delivers to operational requirement.

Nair & Co. is focused exclusively on facilitating international expansion servicing both established multinationals and start-ups looking to move abroad. The business delivers internal finance, HR, compliance and legal functions . As Vice President Human Resources my international experience and knowledge base extended into amongst others India, China Japan and America.

• Implemented HRIS to secure HR process automation and transformation–20% gain on billable time.

• Launch of a Leadership and Business Learning Academy across 3 primary business streams.

• Developed, Launched and Implemented a KPI based performance management system.

• Implemented a global employee engagement programme delivering a 13% engagement shift.

• Reduced staff turnover by 12% through innovation and improved practices.

• Implemented various change management programmes delivering amongst others a 30% decrease in incurred late delivery penalties[£750k savings].
