Lay Director’s Message

By the Grace of God, I

completed my first term as Lay Director.

During the first year, there were ups and

downs, blind curves, pot holes, and other

challenges just like other walks of life.

But with all your support, love, and each

one taking active role working in His

vineyard, the task at hand becomes

enjoyable. I know that the second and

third term will have set of challenges as

well. With the Lord’s blessings, we can

overcome all of these obstacles.

On August 3rd

we had the

Filipino Cursillo Community (FCC)

picnic and the reunion of past Rectors

and Rectoras held at Lake Chabot in

Castro Valley. The task was led by Sister

Annie Villarente and her Post Cursillo

Team. The event was well attended and

we felt the love, joy, and camaraderie

from each one. Laughter was in the air!

There were plenty of food as well as lots

of games, music, entertainment, and

activities. Thanks to Bro. Willie who

recorded the event, you can view them at

your convenience. I highly recommend

to everybody to put this on their next

year’s calendar of events. I am sure

Sister Myrla Raymundo, our Mariposa

editor, will publish a Special issue of the

Mariposa to capture the memories at the

picnic and also the special moments

shared by our past Rectors and Rectoras.

As I mentioned at the event, each

one of us who made our Cursillo,

remember a special moment with our

Rector/Rectora during the weekend. The

weekend did not happen by chance, but

it was through hard work by each

member server under the

leadership/guidance of the respective

Rector/Rectora. Some of them were not

able to attend the event because of

physical constraints, some had gone

before us, some had prior commitments.

Nevertheless, on behalf of FCC

Secretariat, I salute you all past

Rectors/Rectoras.

The next big event is the Region

XI Grand Ultreya to be held in Santa

Clara on August 24th

to be hosted by the

Diocese of San Jose; followed by the

Women’s Cursillo weekend on Aug. 29th

through Sept. 1st ; then our FCC

Friendship dance on Sept. 21st to be

hosted by Verbum Dei Team under the

guidance of Bro. Mike and Sister Evelyn

Isidro.

The East Ultreya which started

on May 19, 2012 under Sister Pat

Camorongan’s leadership and Deacon

Albert Dizon’s spiritual guidance has

been drawing good attendance. We are

forever thankful to the Lord for giving

us our Spiritual advisors who are forever

committed to serving our Cursillo

community.

FCC Clergy Corner Must Read! - Lumen Fidei (Light of

Faith)

By Deacon Steve Budnik

This September Clergy Corner

concludes the series on the Year of Faith

with impressions from the Encyclical

Letter Lumen Fidei of the Supreme

Pontiff Francis.

Although Lumen Fidei was signed and

released by Pope Francis on the

Solemnity of the Holy Apostles Peter

and Paul, the first draft was written by

Pope Benedict XVI Emeritus.

This encyclical is structured with an

Introduction and four chapters: We have

Believed in Love; Unless You Believe,

You will not Understand; I Delivered to

You what I Also Received; God Prepares

a City for Them.

Please note that the comments on the

introduction and chapters of Lumen

Fidei included below are not intended to

be summaries. Rather they are my

impressions intended to evoke a hunger

in you to read the complete text of the

encyclical.

Introduction - Faith as light connects

faith with the light of creation which the

evangelist John links to Christ the light

entering creation as the word made flesh

in the womb of the Blessed Virgin. We

begin our Cursillo Weekends with

illusion to this understanding of the light

of Christ birthing the light of faith. We

labor during the rest of the weekend to

illuminate the seed of faith in the hearts

of the candidates.

We have Believed in Love – The history

of salvation reveals a God who loves us

and it is the belief in that love that

caused our ancestors to act by faith.

“Faith in Christ brings salvation because

in him our lives become radically open

to a love that precedes us, a love that

transforms us from within, acting in us

and through us.” 1

Unless You Believe, You will not

Understand – The light of faith enables

us to see and hear the truth which is

inseparable from love; not only to

understand it; but to be led by it. “One

who loves realizes that love is an

experience of truth, that it opens our

eyes to see the reality in a new way, in

union with the beloved.” 2

I Delivered to You what I Also Received

– The light of faith is passed from

generation to generation by an unbroken

chain of witnesses. “These then are the

four elements which comprise the

storehouse of memory which the Church

hands down: the profession of faith, the

celebration of the sacraments, the path of

the ten commandments, and prayer.” 3

God Prepares a City for Them – Faith is

light that leads the way to the common

good, guides the family in all its stages,

consoles and strengthens the suffering,

and makes blessed all who believe.

“Faith does not merely grant interior

firmness, a steadfast conviction on the

part of the believer; it also sheds light on

every human relationship because it is

Page 12: THE MARIPOSA - FILIPINO CURSILLO COMMUNITY …...of Christians who seek to be more committed and more united in order to accelerate the living of what is fundamental for being a Christian

12

born of love and reflects God’s own

love.” 4

“Precisely because it is linked to love

(cf. Gal 5:6), the light of faith is

concretely placed at the service of

justice, law and peace.” 5

Pope Francis closes Lumen Fidei with a call to prayer: “Let us turn in prayer to Mary, Mother of the Church and Mother of our faith. Mother, help our faith! Open our ears to hear God’s word and to recognize his voice and call. Awaken in us a desire to follow in his footsteps, to go forth from our own land and to receive his promise. Help us to be touched by his love, that we may touch him in faith. Help us to entrust ourselves fully to him and to believe in his love, especially at times of trial, beneath the shadow of the cross, when our faith is called to mature. Sow in our faith the joy of the Risen One. Remind us that those who believe are never alone. Teach us to see all things with the eyes of Jesus, that he may be light for our path. And may this light of faith always increase in us, until the dawn of that undying day which is Christ himself, your Son, our Lord!” 6
