    Installation, Operation and Maintenance Instructions

Introduction:The Apex 5000 Modular Positioning System (AMPS) hasthree options for internal limit switches:

Each of these options is easily installed and adjusted inthe field with no housing modification required.

    TYPE K(2) SPDT Mechanical Switches

    10 Amp 125 Vac1/2 Amp 125 Fdc

    (Form C)

    TYPE M(2) SPST Proximity Switches

    .41 Amp 125 Vac1/2 Amp 100 Vdc

    Max. contact 50 Watts Resistive(Form A)

    TYPE N(2) SPDT Proximity Switches

    1/4 Amp 125 Vac1/4 Amp 24 Vdc

    Max. Contact 3 Watts Resistive(Form C)

Switches are mounted and prewired (soldered) to printedcircuit boards. The boards include a unpluggable terminalblock for easy field connection. Switches are tripped byquick set cams mounted on a special positioner shaft.Factory installed units are complete with top switch set totrip at full clockwise position. Field installation kits include(1) switch card, (1) positioner shaft (complete with quickset cams), (2) replacement snap rings, and (2) switchcard mounting screws.

Installation:Caution: Be sure supply air pressure is removed and no

pressure exists in actuator before installation.1. Remove positioner from actuator (it is not necessary

to remove air lines) and remove cover.2. Remove positioner shaft snap ring on outside of

housing.3. Push span arm away from shaft to remove pressure

on cam. Holding cam, remove cam/shaft assembly.4. Install (1) snap ring on limit switch shaft in groove

closest to quick set cams.5. Apply a light coat of lubricant (Lubriplate MAG-1

grease or equivalent) to shaft between grooves.

    6. Push span arm out of the way and install shaft inpositioner. Make sure cam and shaft flats are properlyaligned (see Mounting and Cam Installation inPositioner IOM B00062).

    7. Install (1) snap ring in bottom shaft groove to secureshaft in positioner.

    8. Place switch card in positioner, align holes and looselyfasten with (2) screws. Holes are slightly oversizedto allow for proper spacing between switch and quickset cams.

    9. Push (or pull) on quick set cams and rotate (or rotateshaft) to check for switch tripping. Then tighten

mounting screws.10. Replace positioner on actuator. Note: Changing shaft

may affect positioner calibration. Check and recali-

brate positioner if necessary.11. Calibrate limit switches by varying positioner input to

provide desired switch trip position. Push (or pull) onappropriate quick set cam and rotate until switch tripsor untrips as desired (use an ohmmeter or othercontinuity checking device).

    12. Remove conduit plug (use 3/8" Allen wrench) andmake electrical connections following applicableelectrical code requirements. The circuit boardindicates the normally open, normally closed and

common terminals for each switch.13. Replace cover.

Special Requirements for ApplicationsInvolving Weather or Periodic Hose-down:The Apex 5000 positioner requires unrestricted exhaust.A breather is provided in the housing bottom. If the posi-tioner is mounted such that rain or hose-down fluid mightget inside through the breather, special preparation isnecessary. Water or other fluid ingression may short outlimit switches. Two options are available:

    1. Plug breather port (using a 3/8" NPT pipe plug) andallow the positioner to exhaust out through electricalconduit. This requires that no conduit seals be usedand that the user provide means for exhaust air toescape conduit.

    2. Pipe a suitable breather line to the breather port.Avoid the use of loops or other configurations thatmight trap fluid or otherwise restrict exhaust flow andaffect positioner performance. Use a simple verticalline six to twelve inches long with output towards theground (see Figure 1).

Operation and Maintenance:Limit switches are simple and require no maintenance. However, it is suggested that periodic checks be made forproper operation. There are no field-serviceable parts associated with the limit switch options.

Ordering Information:The following is a list of replacement kit part numbers, as well as individual shaft assemblies and switch cards:
