REMINDER TO ALL MEMBERS Lockheed Martin's Workplace Security policy, CPS-565 is strictly enforced. One provision of the policy is a workplace free of weapons, which includes Firearms, Ammunition, Bows and Arrows. The club must emphasize this policy to our members. Additionally, a state issued CCW permit does not supersede nor over ride this LM policy. Members wanting to store firearms or archery equipment during the day ONLY, must contact Gene Adamson (303-971-1531) or Dave Mulholland (303-977-3674) for access instructions.

Call Plant Protection (7-4646) if you have an incident or injury on the range.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER (RANGE STATUS)

I hope all of you had a chance to see the email from 27APR11. As I mentioned, we finally received some feedback from Lockheed Martin. We have gotten the administrative things cleaned up and the signs have been ordered. We will get those posted as soon as possible. There is really only one issue left to resolve and that has to do with metal targets. At the meeting with the company in January, it was clear that the gongs would have to go and, indeed, we took care of that right away. The BOD members in the meeting explained the differences between the “gongs” that were always available and the metal targets used in club-sanctioned events. They left the meeting with the understanding that the metal targets in a very controlled environment would be OK. In the latest response from Lockheed Martin, they asked that all references to metal targets be removed. This would be a major impact on several of our activities such as Practical Pistol, Cowboy Action, Steel Challenge, and Silhouette matches. We are investigating to find out if there are any suitable alternatives but so far it does not appear that there are any. We are sending a white paper to the company to explain this. We are asking for a meeting with them in the next week to hammer out any remaining obstacles to reopening the range (update: meeting has been scheduled for 12MAY11). We’ll keep you up-to-date as we have more news. On Saturday, May 7th, the club held the first RSO orientation meeting. They ran through the SHFC-specific policies and procedures so that the RSOs are ready to go as soon as we get the OK to open. The next RSO orientation meeting will be held on May 22nd. REQUIRED MANDATORY MEMBER TRAINING

The new annual General Membership Training will commence this week. There will be limited opportunities for

you to get this MANDATORY training completed. The following dates are set:

• Tuesday – May 10th – Beginning at 5:00pm at the Clubhouse

• Thursday – May 12th – Beginning at 5:00 PM at the LSTTB IDC

• Tuesday – May 17th – Beginning at 5:00pm at the SSB Presentation Room (SSB-614)

• Thursday – May 19th – Beginning at 5:00 PM at the SSB Presentation Room (SSB-614)

If you are a BADGED employee with access to the Waterton Campus, please attend one of the three sessions

there. The Clubhouse only has capacity for about 40 people and we’d like to save that for retirees and people

with other special circumstances.

Be sure to go to the SHFC website and review the latest range rules (http://gvtg.com/skyline/, then click on

“Safety/Range Rules” on the left) and download and take the test (http://gvtg.com/skyline/, then click on

“Membership” on the left and go to “Exam & Liability Release (2011)” before the class to help speed things along.

We’ll have the latest Annual Liability Waiver at the training sessions for you to sign.

REMINDER: We don’t have the question of metallic targets for club sanctioned events resolved yet so there may

be one more update to the range rules but that does not affect the test.

Come prepared to learn, ask questions, grade your test, sign your waiver, pay your dues, and pickup your new

badges. The class portion should only take an hour max.

If you have questions – please contact: Gene Adamson ([email protected]) or Jim Cathcart

([email protected]).

Anything we forgot? Probably, but we’ll handle that at the classes!

Range Safety Officer Status

Current status of the Range Safety Officers; As you all know, the Range Safety Officer role was one of the firm requirements levied by the company for the range to reopen. In a nutshell, the range will no longer be an open range, it will become a monitored range, with a trained RSO who will open/close the range and provide coordination with Plant Protection. The RSO on duty also cannot engage in shooting activities. If an RSO is not on duty, the range cannot open. This will be covered at length in the mandatory range safety training sessions. At present, the club has appx. 80 people (out of 857 members), who have successfully taken the NRA RSO certification course. With another 20+ who are ready to take the next course once we get it scheduled. Just to let the membership know, the NRA course is NOT free, the club has paid a significant amount for each person to take this course. Of the 80+, appx 35 attended a 4 hour RSO range orientation session held last Saturday. The object of the orientation session was to “walk the range”, have everyone become familiar with the current shooting events (and the safety issues particular to those events), and to go over the duties and responsibilities of the RSO in detail. I want to thank all who attended as well as Gene Adamson and Walter Tang who brought food and drink. The next orientation session is scheduled for 5/22.

With the current number of RSO’s it will not be feasible at this time to have an RSO available to open the range every day after work. The current plan, is to have the weekday scheduled events provide for an RSO during the time the event is running. Once the event is finished, the RSO will close the range. Again, unless pre-coordination is made, the range will close at the end of the event. The current staffing of RSO’s will allow the range will be open on Off-Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (and some selected holidays). Please be patient, as this is a new role and direction for the club and there will be some speed-bumps that we will encounter and have to deal with. Once the range is open, make sure you thank the RSO’s, for their dedication and commitment is what is allowing you to enjoy your sport. Anyone who would like to become an RSO, please contact Al Shinogle at ( [email protected]), and we will add you to the list for the next training session.

ARCHERY COMMITTEE NEWS & HUNTING REPORT When SHFC receives the LMSSC HR and Plant protection permission letter to archery hunt on LMSSC property for the 2011 season, the entire membership will be informed. This is part of the CWD control plan requested by the CDOW:

* The boundaries will probably be similar to 2010, with some minor changes. * Only personnel who are SHFC members in good standing effective April 1 of the current year will be

allowed to archery hunt the LMSSC property during the 2011 season. * Anyone wanting to archery hunt the 2011 season must complete their 2011 work bond (any committee

type) (Guests are exempt, but encouraged, from this requirement) prior to obtaining a 2011 permit. * The definition of immediate family who may be a guest hunter includes spouse, child, grandchild, &

parent of SHFC members. * The following personnel are NOT included on the list given permission to archery hunt on

LMSSC property as a guest or member * Brothers & Sisters, in laws, nephews, uncles, etc of SHFC members * SHFC members who work for either the government or a subcontractor. Other requirements include * Must attend the safety/security briefing & hold a permit issued by plant protection * Be in possession of a valid DOW hunting license * Possess an archery hunter education card

The archery hunter education card will be required for all personnel prior to getting a hunt permit

for 2011. Your regular hunter ed. card will not be adequate if you desire to get a permit to archery

hunt on LMSSC property in 2011. If you are interested in archery specifics contact: Mitch Arnold at 303-977-2117.

YOUTH SHOOTING SPORTS PROGRAMS (ON HOLD)

SHFC will continue to offer a youth shooting sports program this year. This will consist of Firearm Safety Training, Small Bore Rifle, and Shotgun. We will also be hosting Boy Scout shooting events. The programs are COED, and open to all youths between the ages of 12 through 19 who have a valid Hunter Ed or NRA firearms safety card in their possession for admittance to the SHFC range. A current waiver form is required. At this time Paul Monce is the contact for all youth shooting programs, including the Boy Scout shooting programs. Paul can be reached at 303-977-3823 or [email protected].

YOUTH SHOTGUN: The shotgun program will consist of informal trap shooting, a trap league, and a couple of trips to a sporting clays range. We also have an opportunity to register one or more teams in the National Shooting Sports Foundation, Scholastic Trap Program. These teams will participate in the Colorado State Shoot. Winners at the state level will get an all expenses paid trip to the Grand American Tournament.

FISHING NEWS

Pike season is heating up as the mountain waters warm to 45 degrees. Walleye are becoming hungrier as the water down here warms to 55 degrees. If you want to join us on Tuesday nights on Chatfield, let me know. If you want to head to the mountains for pike, that’s possible too. June 18th (the day before father’s day) we will be heading up to Spinney for the day. Some people are going to fly fish for pike. Others are going to cast/troll for trout. Email David ([email protected]) if you are interested.

3-GUN (ON HOLD) Start time is normally 9:00 am with setup starting at 8:15 am. For those new to 3-gun or multi-gun, we shoot pistol, shotgun and semi-auto carbine/rifle for a combination of accuracy and speed usually including movement and target transitions. Typical ammo requirement is roughly 25 rounds of pistol, 50 rounds of rifle, 25 rounds of shotgun (mostly birdshot and occasionally 5 rounds of slug and buckshot). Contact Dave Mulholland at 303-977-3674 or email [email protected] to get advance information and get on the mailing list.

PRACTICAL PISTOL LADIES ONLY (ON HOLD) We will be starting Ladies Only group activities soon (pending approval from Lockheed Martin to reopen). Meet at the entrance gate just off Wadsworth by about 4:30pm, then we will caravan up. Remember to bring your “semi-automatic” pistol, holster and 3 magazines, about 100 rounds, your eye and ear protection, pants, layered clothing (never sure about the weather until mid June), hat, flat soled shoes (no heels or wedgies), minimal jewelry (leave bracelets and other hanging bling in the car). Any guests will have a new liability form to sign. This should be a great year and we want to get an early start on it. Call Tom Frickell (720-202-6502 cell).

PRACTICAL PISTOL – LITE (ON HOLD) Practical Pistol Lite is starting back up soon (pending approval from Lockheed Martin to reopen), and goes every other Monday through September. For those of you who are new to Practical Pistol, this affords less experience shooters and opportunity to come out with a group of like-minded shooters and practice defensive skills. As always we will first and foremost focus on range safety. This year we are limiting participation to semi-automatics pistols in the effort to speed up the courses and get more shooting for everyone. Make sure your equipment (Pistol, Holster, Mag pouches) is in good repair and good working order. Carbine and shotgun nights will be less frequent this year to concentrate on pistol shooting and to allow everyone to get in more shooting. We meet at the gate around 4:15, and head to the range no later than 4:30. Since April and May weather is so challenging, please dress in layers so you can stay warm just in case it gets cold. There has never been a better opportunity to tune your defensive pistol skills, and create a defensive mindset . Call Dave Norris at 303-204-6735 (cell) or Tom Frickell at 303-971-5493, or email at [email protected].

COWBOY ACTION (ON HOLD) Cowboy/Cowgirl Action will be held on the Thursdays of Track B off-Friday weeks. Detailed schedule to follow once the range is open. Contact: Mark Bonkowski ([email protected])

HANDGUN STEEL CHALLENGE (ON HOLD) When the range reopens we will be starting a new steel challenge activity. It will be held on the alternating Thursdays from Cowboy Action once the range is open. More details will be provided in an upcoming newsletter. Contact: Sherry Woodard ([email protected])

COMPETITION PISTOL (ON HOLD) When the range reopens we will continue the Tuesday night event. The event is more closely aligned with USPSA style competition. It will continue to be a “By Invitation Only Event” and participation excludes you from Monday and Wednesday night events in most cases. Contact: Brian Sompayrac ([email protected])

SKEET SHOOTING (ON HOLD)

When the range is opened we will start skeet shooting on the immediate following Tuesday evening with a start time of 4:00 P.M. Please contact Tom Moore at 303-978-9432 of there is a question about the weather. We will also have Skeet Shooting on the off Fridays starting at 10:00 A.M.

TRAP SHOOTING (ON HOLD) When the range is opened we will start trap shooting on Thursday evenings with a start time of 4:00 P.M. Please contact Ray Schwindt at (303) 985-8072 for weather cancellations or if you have any questions.

HIGH POWER NEWS (ON HOLD)

The SHFC High Power matches are conducted every “Track A” off-Friday, finishing by noon or 1 PM. We welcome all types of high power service or match rifles; some choose to shoot the Garand or M1A but the AR15 is the choice of most. The club has three AR15s, a Garand, two shooting mats, and two spotting scopes, and one stand which are available to use during matches. The High Power Matches, including the Vintage Matches are pending, and will be scheduled as soon as our range status is changed to “Open”. While many sources flippantly refer to the political challenges faced by any restricting legislation on the federal level, and a general reluctance to tighten restrictions on more local levels, there is far from a guarantee this momentum can’t change. JPFO today launches "The High Capacity Freedom Campaign"… What is High Cap Freedom? JPFO now asks EVERY responsible American gun owner to, as soon as possible, purchase at least one high capacity magazine. Even if you don’t own a firearm that requires magazines, buy at least one “high cap” mag for a commonly owned pistol or rifle. (It may even be one of the fastest-appreciating investments you ever make!) Why? Because we want the production of all those millions and millions of magazines in the “pipeline” before any ban can take effect. Rename Your UZI and Now Your Legal – Stupid California Assault Weapon Laws, AmmoLand.com, April 11, 2011 What’s in a name? In California, apparently a lot. When the division of Israel Military Industries (IMI) – maker of small arms including the Uzi firearm line – was purchased by Sami Katsav in 2005, it was renamed Israel Weapon Industries (IWI). That small change may make a big difference for California residents interested in self-defense firearms. DOVER, Del. — The state House has approved a bill establishing a framework for disposing of guns stored by law enforcement agencies. For only $340, you too can have a permit to keep a gun in your home! A gun-rights-advocacy group sued Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg on Tuesday, claiming that the city fee for obtaining a home-handgun permit was so excessive that it impinged on the Second Amendment. The group, the Second Amendment Foundation, based in Bellevue, Wash., is focusing on New York’s fees because, according to the group, the city is one of the few places in the country that requires people to obtain permits to keep guns in their homes. A bill that would have streamlined the state's gun permit process for them was stripped of that controversial provision Tuesday, before a legislative committee passed the rest of the measure. Sen. Roderick Wright (D-Inglewood), author of the bill, said he hoped to revisit the idea later. Earlier efforts would have only applied to state lawmakers but that effort failed in favor of a prevalent desire to expand everyone’s rights. Legislation weaving its way through the House of Representatives would increase the number of places that legal gun owners can carry their guns to include restaurants, day-care centers and churches. "It puts criminals on the defense," said state Rep. Thad Viers, R-Horry, a co-sponsor of the bill and the owner of about 25 firearms and a concealed weapons permit. "Criminals don't know if you're carrying or not." If it passes, the bill will become just one of many pro-gun bills to win legislative approval in South Carolina - a state where being pro-gun is a priority for Republican and Democratic lawmakers.
