YOUTH SHOOTING SPORTS PROGRAMS

The SHFC Youth Program is beginning the process of contacting other clubs and ranges to set-up some fun, competition shooting for young people that will emphasize proper firearm handling, team and individual achievement goals, and foster participation in a competitive environment. Beginning shooters are encouraged to join and become a member of this activity. We planned on alternating Saturday’s and Sunday schedule to allow families that have plans one month to make a staggered schedule. We will plan our first Range shoot for Sunday April 1st, at 9am, and then the second shoot for Saturday, April 28th, at 9am. For more information on all youth shooting programs contact Paul Monce at 303-977-3823 or [email protected] or Gene Adamson at 303-971-1531, email, [email protected].

YOUTH SHOTGUN:

The shotgun program will consist of informal trap shooting, a trap league, and a couple of trips to a sporting clays range. We could also try some skeet shooting if there’s enough interest.

BOY SCOUT TROOP ACTIVITY:

SHFC will continue to host Boy Scout Troops that wish to work on merit badge requirements. These shoots are normally held on either Saturday or Sunday from 0900 - 1300. This event normally takes place at the 100yd Range or Shotgun Range, and is also a range restricted event. Request from troops will be worked on a first come first served basis. For more information contact Paul Monce at 303-977-3823 or email at [email protected]

NRA Class ScheduleBasic Pistol (BP) and Personal Protection in the Home (PPITH) classes will start up again this month! The Basic Pistol class covers all of the basics for both revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. The club provides all firearms and ammunition for this class. All you need to bring is you hearing and eye protection. PPITH covers how to protect yourself and your family in your home with a pistol. The student will use their own firearm for this class. Basic Pistol is a prerequisite for PPITH, so keep that in mind when signing up. If you want to take PPITH without taking Basic Pistol first, you will need to contact Dave Norris (303-977-8068, or email at [email protected]) and arrange to attend Practical Pistol to demonstrate safe firearm handling and basic shooting skills prior to signing up. Each class consists of three sessions – two weeknight classroom sessions (approx 4 hour each) and a Saturday range session (approx 5 hours). Class fees are $50 for SHFC members and $75 for non-members.

If you would like to sign up for a class or have more questions please contact Sherry Woodard – [email protected]. Classes fill up fast!

PRACTICAL PISTOL - CLASSIC

First match for 2012 is on April 4th. For info or questions contact Mike Sullivan 303.977.3478, [email protected]

PRACTICAL PISTOL LADIES ONLY

Tom has retired and the baton has been passed. I will be running both Monday night events now. Starting on April 23rd and then every other Monday, 5-7 pm, we will be hosting the Practical Pistol Ladies Only activity. We meet at the gate around 4:15, and head to the range no later than 4:30. Only instructors get to talk to the Ladies, the other men have to remain silent and help with the brassing, target maintenance and score keeping. Same format as last year, bring your semi-auto pistol and 100 rounds of ammo. All shoes need to be closed toed and good flat bottomed shoes/boots are necessary, no sandals or other open toed shoes. Please wear a hat with a brim/bill and pants/shorts, not skirts. The spring and summer should be great since the winter has been so challenging. I hope to see you there. Call Dave Norris at 303-977-8068, or email at [email protected].

PRACTICAL PISTOL – LITE

Practical Pistol Lite is starting back up on April 16th, and goes every other Monday through September. For those of you who are new to Practical Pistol, this affords less experience shooters and opportunity to come out with a group of like-minded shooters and practice defensive skills. As always we will first and foremost focus on range safety. This year we are limiting participation to semi-automatics pistols in the effort to speed up the courses and get more shooting for everyone. Make sure your equipment (Pistol, Holster, Mag pouches) is in good repair and good working order. We meet at the gate around 4:15, and head to the range no later than 4:30. Since April and May weather is so challenging, please dress in layers so you can stay warm just in case it gets cold. There has never been a better opportunity to tune your defensive pistol skills, and create a defensive mindset . Call Dave Norris at 303-977-8068, or email at [email protected].

SUPER TUESDAY COMPETITION PISTOL (STCP)

We will be resuming the Tuesday night practical pistol competition starting on April 3rd. We meet at the pistol range starting with the stage set up at 4:30 PM followed by the safety briefing at 5:00. If you need to be escorted, please let me know and I can make arrangements to meet you at the gate. This format of competition shooting is more closely aligned with USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association) where accuracy, power and speed are considered to be equivalent elements of practical shooting. This practical pistol competition event is free style and is a test of expertise in the use of practical firearms and equipment. Challenges are presented through the use of various stage props and designs where the competitor has to solve them in a manner he or she considers best within the limitations provided but done with the utmost safety in mind. We also throw in tactical defensive scenarios once in a while where stages are engaged from concealment carry. If you are interested in this type of competition shooting and would like additional information, please contact Benjamin Go at (303) 971-1009 or email me at [email protected].

3-GUN

Please note the date changes for the 3 Gun matches. We will concentrate on target transition and movement. 3-Gun matches are held once a month on Saturday mornings. Setup starts at 8:30 am with first shot at 9 am. Remaining match date for this season is April 7th. For those new to 3-gun, it is similar to our Wednesday night practical pistol except we shoot the pistol, shotgun and semi-auto carbine/rifle for a combination of accuracy and speed. Getting bored sitting at the bench shooting paper targets? Want to develop your action shooting skills, shoot on the move, handle shooting under physical and mental pressure, add new dimensions to your shooting skills, refine and test your shooting gear? 3-Gun is the game for you. Shooters of all levels are welcome. 3-Gun’s goals are safety, skill development, fun and challenge. Shooters new to practical action shooting should call ahead to arrange a safety briefing. Contact Walter Tang at 303-977-6474 or email [email protected] to get on the mailing list. I usually send out the stage description before the shoot so you’ll know what to expect and how much ammo to bring.

SHFC April 2012 NewsletterFISHING NEWS

For all information contact the fishing committee chair [email protected] or 303-977-3509.

The yearly ice fishing trip to Granby went well. Two days, 41 fish. Nine people spent the guided day with three awesome guides from my friends at fishingwithbernie.com. Seventeen fish were landed that day but the large fish avoided us. We had five large fish on the line the first day but didn’t land any of them. The second day included 13 people who landed 20 fish. The big fish of the trip came on day 2 with a 38” 19-pound fish landed by Matt Boldra aka ”Big Fish Matt”. Everyone who attended landed a fish at some point in the two days.

Weekly “guided” trips to Chatfield or Waterton Canyon start in April. I take people out during the week to fish for walleye, smallmouth bass, trout, and perch. Spin fishing or fly fishing. Families are welcome. All gear is provided for free. This is a way to learn how to fish our local lake and stream, learn about the club fishing boats (that you can rent for $10), and to have an enjoyable evening on the water. Email me to set up a date and time.

The walleye are spawning at Chatfield. If you walk along the dam at night with a headlamp or spotlight you can find hundreds of walleye up to 30” long pushing up to 1 foot of water. You can’t fish the dam due to DOW netting operations but the sight will give an insight onto the walleye population at Chatfield.

SHFC April 2012 NewsletterLAST CALL—the club has an ice auger and shelters to borrow if anyone wants to head up into the mountains for ice fishing. Granby will have safe ice until mid-April and I can point you to plenty of spots on Granby or Grand Lake.

Boat Rentals---Contact Bob Cohan to reserve a date. The club has three fishing boats that work great for Metro lakes and smaller mountain lakes. Each boat can be equipped with a fish finder, GPS and trolling motor to help find the fish.

Want to hire a fishing guide? I can arrange trips with Nathan Zelinsky at Tightline Outdoors (Chatfield, Cherry Creek, Antero, Spinney, 11-mile), Bernie Keefe at Fishing with Bernie (Lake Granby), and Dan Swanson/Chad LaChance at Fishful Thinker (Horsetooth/Carter Lake) at a discounted rate. These guided trips are a great way to learn a lake or to entertain out-of-town guests. Rates run $350 to $450 or less for three anglers for a full day.

LEVER ACTION SHOOTERS

Vito DeAngelis is gauging interest in a club sponsored match for lever action shooters. Some preliminary thoughts are a mix of targets both steel and paper, potentially in the March/April timeframe. The goal is to make this a SIMPLE, FUN, NO PRESSURE shoot that does not turn into an equipment race. Vito is looking for feedback while fleshing out a course and rules. If you have a 125 year old .45-70 that can hit the broad side of a barn, you’ll be competitive. For more details, contact Vito [email protected]

I’m selling a Winchester 1903 manufactured in 1913 or 1914 (Serial #: 79XXX). I’m not a curio/relic collector and don’t know how to grade the condition of such pieces. This rifle was clearly used. As I understand Winchester nomenclature, they changed their model naming from a 4-digit to 2-digit in 1919. The designation on the barrel is Mod 03; so, it seems to have a post-1919 barrel on it. Also, the rear sight is missing; there are some cracks in the stock and the blueing is pretty worn. Asking $200 OBO.

I’m also selling a Remington 572 Fieldmaster. This rifle is in ok condition. The butt plate is missing… the bluing is worn in places… and the barrel has some pitting. Internals seem to be in good mechanical condition though I have not fired it (just cleaned it up). Asking $75 OBO.

Lastly, I’m in the market for a spotting scope and a pair of binoculars. Does anyone have used optics you’re willing to part with? I don’t want to spend more than $100 on either; alternatively, I’m willing to trade the above rifles for optics.
