PREGNANCY AWARENESS WEEK A Huge Success!
I t is not easy to explain the joy of anticipating mother-hood. Pregnancy completely alters a woman‟s life, giving her a miracle in her arms and making her the guardian of a helpless infant. But the journey is not always easy, physical discomfort and ride on
emotional roller coaster are part of the process. During this crucial time, it is vital that expecting mothers eat correctly, live responsibly and go for regular checkups. That was one of the reasons we did the awareness. A team of experts addressed over 200 women at three informative sessions, providing guidance on a number of pregnancy related issues. The importance of birth companionship was emphasized. Dr Khanyile addressed them on the benefits of breast-feeding even while on ARV‟s. A rep from SANCA warned them of the dangers of subsistence abuse while pregnant. A word of gratitude goes out to all who assisted in ensuring that the campaign is executed as planned. The following sponsors also made it possible that our guests receive nice goody bags and lucky draw prizes… Bless-the-Baby Ministries, Pigeon Baby, Bio-oil, Bennettes, Carriwell, Bayers Healthcare & SAN-CA Zululand. A Big Thank you to them as well!!

GAGASI 99.5 FM OB IN OUR PREMISES! Lower Umfolozi Hospital played host to the Department of Health‟s Breastfeeding awareness campaign on the 20th of February 2011. the event was aimed at creating awareness that HIV positive mothers can still breast feed their new-born babies without risk of infecting them, provided they follow the appropriate antiretroviral treatment Programme, and they are actually encouraged to do so for the benefit of their babies. The department recommends breast milk over formula, as it contains protective nutrients that are essential for baby‟s health. The campaign was directed by the Nutrition team from Head Office and from our local District Office, and it proved to be a great success!

MESSAGE FROM THE MEDICAL MANAGER
Maternal and Child health is one of our Government‟s priorities - so, working in a Maternity Hospital calls to all staff members to work together towards achieving this millennium goal. Another very important Programme is HIV and AIDS (HCT Cam-paign), and our role as an institutions is to ensure that patients are started on time with ARV‟s as per prescribed deadlines and conditions. I must say, currently we are doing all that is in our power to prevent mother-to-child transmission. I therefore would like to thank all staff for the
support and hard work so far and commend you for your commitment. Last but not least is my call to all staff members to work together as a team in all that we do, and with that, we can achieve a lot. Dr I Popa

Words of Wisdom
LOWER UMFOLOZI DISTRICT WAR MEMORIAL HOSPITAL Staff showed its support by participating in the Cancer Awareness that was organized in the hospital foyer. Loriete Engelbrecht educated staff about the dangers of exposing oneself to the sun and the symptoms of skin, breast and cervical cancer. The staff members were also encouraged to do self-examinations for breast cancer. On this day we also showed support by collecting over 140 signatures for the declaration of a
Cancer Free Day. Would like to take this opportunity to relay a word of gratitude to all who supported the awareness and who took their time to be part of the information sharing on the day. Loriete, giving the awareness on precautions to prevent cancer.

LUDWM HOSPITAL IN THE COMMUNITY
HEALTHY EAT-ING TIPS BY: Lauren Pietersen, Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa.
To Snack or Not To Snack? Snacking as part of weight management Nothing is worse than that burning feeling of hunger in your stomach, especially when you are trying to lose weight. The good news is that snacking between meals can be of great benefit to not only stabilize your blood glu-cose (sugar) and energy lev-els, but also to prevent you from overeating at main
meals. The trick is to make the right choice of snack to balance your energy intake while helping to provide that feeling of fullness. This ulti-mately helps excess weight come off quicker! Chips, chocolates and sweets may be the first options that come to mind (especially as they are so convenient), but we all know we have to compro-mise somewhere for results. The right choice of snack would be one that provides vitamins, minerals and suffi-cient energy to keep you go-ing without contributing to an excess in daily energy in-take. Stock your pantry with wholegrain crackers, fresh fruits and tasty protein op-tions to prepare quick, easy and nutritious snack combi-
nations that still please your palate and help those kilos disappear.
Here are some great ideas to try at home: One medium fruit (about the size of a tennis-ball) or ½ cup of fresh fruit salad with low fat/fat free, smooth, un-sweetened yoghurt. For ex-tra taste, add a teaspoon of crushed nuts or seeds. One apple sliced and thinly covered with peanut butter One slice of whole wheat/brown bread OR three Pro-vitas OR two Ryvita thinly spread with peanut butter, low fat hummus, soft marga-rine, mashed avocado pear, low fat cheese spread or a small block of low fat cheese or cottage cheese with sliced Tomato Two cups of air-
popped popcorn with a pinch of grated parmesan cheese Raw vegetables (e.g. carrot and celery sticks) with cherry tomatoes dipped in low fat hummus, tzatziki or plain, low fat yoghurt One cup of low fat/lite vege-table soup or one egg (boiled to your liking) with a slice of whole wheat/brown bread cut into dippers (with/without thinly spread soft margarine) One medium baked potato (easily micro waved in 5 minutes) filled with a table-spoon of low fat/fat free cot-tage cheese Fruit smoothie: ½ small banana, ½ cup fresh straw-berries and 1 cup low fat/fat-free plain yoghurt. Add ice and

DOCTOR VISIT OUR HOSPITAL
Internationally renowned South African Doctor, Professor Hugh Phillpott visited our hospital and our doctors and Intern doctors were honoured to have him in their morning meeting, as he shared his sound knowledge and wisdom with them. Prof Phillpott designed the labour partogram which is now used worldwide to identify abnormally slow labour.
Pictured left is Mr C. Myeza (CEO), Ms M. Mbambo (Care Centre) & Mrs T. Pewa (NM), at the hand-over of the donations that were collected during the World AIDS Day coin-laying project. The events committee met and agreed on giving the donation of R1000, 00 to “Women Like These Community Care” project, which is local and situated in Ndabayakhe, about 8 km from the Hospital.
They cook for about 150 destitute kids everyday, and they do home-based care with the little they have for the sick individuals in the community.

On top of teenage pregnancy cases, this department has observed that sexual abuse cases are reported late after 72 hours has lapsed. approach where by local schools are visited in order to deal with the above issues.
Objectives
To create awareness among
the school children on teenage pregnancy
To encourage school children
to report sexual abuse cases within 72 hours To empower them on decision –making School visits started in November last year and there was a break
due to school vacation in December and January. Visits for 2011 resumed in March. The Social workers visit school twice a month. In primary schools grade 6 and 7 while in high schools all grades are seen. So far two primary schools have been visited namely, Phesheya where 250 learners were reached and Ngongodo with 67 learners. Next visit will be next term

Are in order for Dr Vuyo Makhanya, who recently presented his research outcome on the rising rate of Caesarian Section in LUDWM. Below is the abstract of his topic and findings:
Title: Trends in caesarean section births at Lower Umfolozi District War Memorial
Hospital (LUDWMH)
Author: Dr Vuyo Makhanya (Medical Officer, LUDWMH.
Abstract:
Aim: to analyze the Robson’s criteria at a secondary/ tertiary/ rural hospital in order to determine the main contributors to the rising caesarean section (c/s) rate.
Method: The Robson’s criteria divide women into ten groups according to parity, past obstetric history, single or multiple pregnancy, fetal presentation, gestational age and mode of onset of labour. The Robson’s criteria was applied retrospectively to the women that delivered at LUDWMH between 1st May to 31st July 2010.
Results: During the study period, a total of 2613 women gave birth to 2621 babies. A total of 1136 women 43, 5% had a c/s birth. The c/s rate ranged from 21, 6% (Robson’s criteria group 1 and 10) to 0, 13% (group 9). Women in group 1 and 10 were the greatest contributors to the emergency c/s rate at 21, 6% each. Women in these groups were also the greatest contributors to both the elective c/s rate and the total c/s rate.
Conclusion: The Robson’s criteria was successfully implemented at the LUDWMH. The Robson’s criteria analysis is ongoing, enabling monitoring of c/s rates. Our results demonstrate that we need to focus on the care of women in Robson’s groups 1 and 10, if c/s rates are to be reduced.
Dr Jeremy Blackeny also presented his research results to the Perinatal team and he is also congratulated for his success in the topic he researched on. The hospital will surely utilize the recommendations by both Doctors to improve on the gaps identified.
TB IS A KILLING DISEASE, BUT IT CAN BE CURED!! A new report by Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF) has revealed that Drug-Resistant TB (DR-TB) is spreading at an alarming rate. The MSF report released on the eve of World TB Day reveals that over the last decade, roughly five million peo-ple worldwide developed
DR VUYO MAKHANYA
DR-TB, of which barely 0.5% had access to appropriate treatment and 1.5 Million died… and the drug to treat it is costing South Africa dearly. The report revealed that the SA government has been paying up to three times more for these already pricey medicines. This is the reason TB Clinic Staff at LUDWM took it to themselves to conduct
educational session to staff on World TB Day. The team later asked the questions to check whether the class was attentive. The pictures tell the story - everybody wanted to show that they understood the teacher of the day!! Story extract: Zululand Observer
