Time Will Tell

There is a famous Dutch proverb that roughly translates as “every day a thread makes a skein in the year” – meaning that patience, perseverance, vision and a “little by little” approach will bring long-lasting results in the end. This edition of Hempel News comes to you as we enter the last quarter of the second decade, when many of the astounding infrastructures under construction today are designed to remain in full service well into the next century. For some of us, it seems impossible to be contemplating our world in 2100, but many of the projects currently being painted with Hempel protective coatings across the globe, of which a number are described in these pages, will still be operating in the 22nd century. Indeed, time is the ultimate test. As José

Saramago put it: “You never know beforehand what people are capable of, you have to wait, give it time”.

The articles featured in the following pages take a look at a number of Hempel’s product ranges that are helping to guarantee such long-life estimations. The new Hempaprime Multi 500 range of high-build epoxy linings is one example (pp. 4-5) and is designed to afford the highest standards of protection whilst also offering fast drying and short re-coating times. This maximizes production throughput, making significant savings in terms of time, cost and inconvenience for customers in multiple sectors.

The article on the new railway bridge in the Czech town of Breclav (p. 8) is a perfect illustration of how a single contract can comprise a number of Hempel paint systems to ensure the perfect solution for each target area, while the feature on the Hellas Gold mining company’s projected beneficiation plant in Greece (p. 11) is an example of how Hempel’s registered Avantguard® range of activated zinc-rich epoxies affords supreme protection on steel structures in the harshest C5-I environments.

As you know, Hempel has a presence in numerous sectors and therefore our products are required to meet different specifications.

For example, Hempel’s role as a multinational supplier of identical coatings on 5 continents was a significant factor for ArcelorMittal (p. 9), given that the components for their renovated plant in northern Spain came from across Europe and China.

On a local level, we’ve also included the colourful story of how a Made In Norway initiative has become the world’s nº 1 surface treatment and coating certification, and how Hempel has consistently supported FROSIO training and certification as part of the company’s policy to aid our customers in getting the most out of our products (p. 10).

Not only this, but Hempel and Joma are providing the coating for one of the five largest oil fields on the Norwegian continental shelf, 160km off the coast. One crucial factor in persuading contractors to adopt a Hempel solution was their long-term relationship with Joma, along with the latter’s outstanding service reputation, built in part through the FROSIO technical inspections it can provide (p. 6).

These are some of the numerous ongoing projects across the continent where Hempel coatings continue to demonstrate that they are your best ally in combatting corrosion and the passage of time.

3Hempel takes the helm at the Sailing World Championships 2018

Hempel takes the helm at the Sailing World Championships 2018

During its century-long history, Hempel has never been afraid to set sail for new horizons, and next year is looking to be no exception. On 26 June, Hempel CEO Henrik Andersen was thrilled to meet with Mayor of Aarhus Jacob Bundsgaard to sign the official title sponsorship agreement for an event which will be known as the Hempel Sailing World Championships 2018 and is due to take place in the Danish town from 30 July to 12 August 2018.

This essential pre-Olympics moment in the sporting calendar is expected to draw in 1,500 sailors from more than 100 nations. The Championships will have an immediate audience of 400,000. TV viewing figures will mean the real number of people watching the Hempel logo

sail to victory will be far greater: no fewer than 160 million households will follow the event in 30 countries. As Hempel’s Corporate Event and Sponsorship Manager Anette Andersen explains, “it’s a massive opportunity for us to get our brand associated with a high-profile event, to increase awareness of our brand and new logo, and to spread the word about our trusted solutions”. Most excitingly, the Hempel logo will appear on every boat, will be included on the official event logo, and will be seen everywhere the event is promoted.

However, reinforcing public awareness is not the only reason why the company has chosen to take part in the biggest sports event ever held in Aarhus. Hempel has always been keen to encourage local initiatives, and given the buzz around the event, the Hempel Sailing World Championships will be a key moment in Aarhus’ history. Mayor Bundsgaard has commented that “Hempel is a global company engaged in more than 80 countries. As such, the title sponsorship is very much aligned with the ambitions and the positioning of Aarhus as an international event and sailing city”. Hempel also hopes to bring sailors and

spectators closer together and make sailing more accessible.

While we are all looking forward to the Championships with great anticipation, Mr Andersen sums it up best: “Hempel has its roots in the maritime industry and we cherish cooperation and high performance. We see every challenge as achievable and every race worth winning. Our partnership with Aarhus 2018 and the World Sailing Championships is our chance to show the world our pioneering spirit”.

Introducing Hempaprime Multi 500: production time reductions of up to 20%, but every bit as strongHempel’s new and advanced, two-component, high-solids, high-build epoxy coating offers performance on every level.

In July, we proudly revealed Hempaprime Multi 500, an advanced high-build epoxy intermediate coating that provides a plethora of advantages for customers throughout Europe and from a range of sectors. First and foremost, it ensures faster drying times with shorter minimum overcoat intervals giving up to a 20%* reduction in production time for the oil & gas, infrastructure, and power generation sectors.

The inspiration behind this new product was our aim to cut production wait times without compromising on high volume solids. Hempaprime Multi 500 is robust at a wide range of film thicknesses, which means that strong and durable protection comes guaranteed. As well as being applied directly to metal, this versatile coating can be used on primed surfaces, as a primer, intermediate or topcoat, but it is also ideal for minor repairs as a simple, single-coat

solution. It has been specifically engineered to assure a long service life for heavy industrial applications, helping to minimise maintenance requirements.

Yet this is not the only saving Hempaprime Multi 500 provides for our customers. The solution resists corrosion, abrasion, and impact, lessening the likelihood of cracks. The product does not need to be thinned and is designed for simple application, delivering three coats in a single shift. Thanks to its robust qualities, it is possible to move coated steel or even build upon it, with a reduced risk of damage. This decreases the need for reblasting and recoating which, again, saves our customers time and money. Its environmental impact is minimised thanks to its reduced VOC content, which is equally a plus for workers handling the product. All in all, there are lots of benefits to using Hempaprime Multi 500,

6 A North Sea success for Hempel

Hempel and its distributor Joma Trading Norway AS have been selected to add an essential protective coating to a project which can be described as productive in more ways than one. Johan Sverdrup numbers among the largest oil discoveries ever made in the North Sea region and it will meet 25 percent of Norway’s petroleum needs, generating an estimated 1.9 to 3.0 billion barrels of oil equivalents. First-phase development will provide 51,000 man-years of work, followed by 2,700 man-years of work in the production phase. It is little surprise, then, that it is to be one of the most important industrial projects in Norway over the next 50 years.

One crucial factor in persuading contractors to adopt a Hempel solution was their long-term relationship with Hempel

and Joma, along with the latter’s outstanding service reputation, built in part through the FROSIO technical inspections it can provide. Thanks to Joma, the client has enjoyed many years of experience with Hempel products without any problems or claims.

A project on this scale cannot afford to fall below rigorous standards (including Norsok M-501) and this is another reason why the client has named Hempel and Joma as paint supplier. Together they have a complete range of protective coatings and systems which meet all environmental challenges, which are not few in number in the cold North Sea. A low-temperature curing paint is the order of the day when submerged carbon

and stainless steel are concerned, so Hempel has provided a system consisting of 2x175µm Hempadur Mastic 4588W.

Hempadur Mastic 4588W is a two-component, high-solids, high-build epoxy paint which forms a hard, tough coating and has good wetting properties. The first coat in use is 4588W-19000, and the second 4588W-27040. As such, Hempel can offer higher solids, lower paint consumption and superior application properties as compared with other suppliers. The system is sprayed on airlessly and mixed at the nozzle.

Phase one production is due to launch in late 2019, and Hempel’s products will truly come into their own when significant quantities of oil start being piped to the Mongstad terminal in Hordaland, generating total revenues of NOK 1,350 billion over 50 years.

7First we move you, then you move us

A new power-generating weir is being installed on the River Hron, Slovakia’s second-longest river that flows over 298 kilometres from its source in the Low Tatra Mountains until it joins the Danube near Štúrovo and Esztergom. The Hron Basin covers approximately 11 percent of Slovakia’s territory and is therefore an important potential source of environmentally-friendly hydro-power for the major towns along its banks, such as Žarnovica, Timače, Levice, or Želiezovce. For that reason, a new power generating weir is being built upstream from Želiezovce, designed to produce up to 13 million MWh of power in a year with average levels of rainfall.

The Želiezovce construction has been designed to fulfil a number of different functions (water management, energy production and environmental control). The project envisions the installation of two hydro-electric generators to harness energy from the water rushing through 3 fields at a drop height of nearly 6 metres. Even with the three flap gates in place, the discharge rate will still be around 620 cubic metres per second and, given that the river water carries a fair amount of sand and silt particles, the weir gate shutters need to be coated to the highest standards of protection against abrasion and corrosion.

First we move you, then you move us

Builders Ševčík HYDRO s.r.o. of Kotvrdovice, Czech Republic, once again chose to use Hempel coatings for this delicate job. This was not their first hydro-power project with Hempel paints, having used them at earlier constructions in Vyšné Opátské, Vítkovice, or Bílovice nad Svitavou, so they were already familiar with the paint scheme recommended by our technical coating

advisers: a 3-layer, 400 micron DFT coat of Hempadur Quattro 17634, each layer tinted to a different shade for clearer distinction.

Hempadur Quattro 17634 is a two-component, universal epoxy paint that cures to an extremely hard and tough coating with good resistance to abrasion, seawater and various oils, making it the ideal choice for coating both atmospheric and in-water facilities. Even in a C4 environment such as the river Hron, it has the added advantages of being quick-drying, high-build and offering excellent anti-corrosion properties. Our customers also highlighted their satisfaction with Hempel’s commercial network that ensures products are readily available with minimal lead-times, backed by a reliable technical service.

Once the weir is completed, the river, which had to be blocked off and diverted during construction, will be released along its original course through the weir, thus putting into practice another example in Slovakia of how to obtain energy from renewable resources.

8 A unique project calls for a unique skills set

A unique project calls for a unique skills set

Hempel has recently brought its expertise to the southern Czech town of Břeclav and the Hohenau-Přerov railway line which runs through it. This inter-station section of the tracks is home to a bridge spanning the Dyje River.

Once it became clear that the existing bridge was in poor technical condition, forcing trains to slow down, Firesta was chosen to replace this structure with a track that could cope with locomotive speeds of 160km/h. The original three consecutive structures were to be replaced by a bridge with a single opening, as requested by the Morava River Basin Agency. The planned construction height at mid-span was 15.64m, with a width of 16.9m.

The project was unique within the Czech railway system, and Firesta almost exclusively used its own skills and expertise to complete it. The painting systems had to comply with local regulations and the main structure coatings had to be certified

as SZDC ONS 03. The structure acts statically as a crossed arch, with the main beam reinforced by a bent arc interacting with a system of rods. On each bridge there are 80 pieces of different inclined tensioned welded rods. Longitudinal effects arising from track and bridge interaction are corrected by a dilatation control system.

So how did Hempel manage to secure a demanding contract which would require multiple coating systems? One factor was that the client had already enjoyed positive long-term experience with Hempel’s products and support. The company had previously used Hempel’s paint because of its quality, good

ratio between performance and price, easy availability, and its accompanying commercial and technical services. Hempel’s quick drying, high-build coatings with excellent anticorrosive properties were to prove particularly valuable for the Břeclav Bridge project.

Different coating systems were applied depending of the sections and requirements, including for the main structure, welding areas, galvanized surfaces or areas under insulation. The chosen products were Hempadur Fast Dry 17410, Hempathane HS 55610, Hempadur Zinc 17360, Hempadur 15553 and Hempel’s Speed-Dry Alkyd 43140. Hempadur Fast Dry 17410 was the most widely used paint for Břeclav Bridge, as this two-component, high build epoxy paint combines a relatively high volume solids content with a short drying period.

The reconstruction project has successfully come to fruition, with the bridge now speeding up cross-European journey times.

Hempel’s loyal customer Firesta commissioned the company to paint a key bridge in the rail network linking Austria and the Czech Republic.

9ArcelorMittal chooses Hempel coatings to protect its new site in Avilés (Spain)

ArcelorMittal chooses Hempel coatings to protect its new site in Avilés (Spain)

ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest iron & steel corporation, is set to continue producing steel in Asturias (NW Spain) for at least another 4 decades, as new capital investments scheduled for 2016 and 2017 at the plants in Avilés and Gijón show. The largest project undertaken by the multinational firm since it first arrived in the region in 1988 involves a €60 million retrofit of the LDIII steel plant.

Hempel coatings were applied at numerous stages throughout this mammoth project. Because the components used in the project were manufactured in different countries (Spain, Italy, Poland, China...) and shipped to Spain for assembly on site, ArcelorMittal required a reputable global supplier who they could trust, such as Hempel. They were seeking not only a paint supplier, but also a partner who would be involved in the project from the outset, ensuring the best designs and solutions for their needs.

Hempel Spain was mainly involved with coating the parts and components (segments and supporting frames and structure) to be installed inside the cooling chamber, built at AM’s subcontractor, SMS, workshops in Tianjin, China and assembled at the Avilés site in Asturias.

In collaboration with Arcelor’s own team, two main paint schemes were selected. In view of the extreme temperatures and sulphurous vapours which the chamber is exposed to, our experts recommended a system based on 3 x 150 micron layers of Hempadur 85671, a two-component, amine adduct cured phenolic epoxy (‘Novolac’) coating that offers excellent adhesion and resistance to high temperatures, water and chemicals. The coating is most commonly employed as an interior lining in tanks and pipelines for hot water, brine and crude oil, as well as for coating potable water tanks and in specific paint systems.

Prior to this, Hempel worked as coating advisors with ArcelorMittal’s Avilés plant in

the development of their in-house paint procedures and regulations based on the ISO 12944 standard. Therefore, Hempel designed a second system for steel structures in the project which are less exposed to such corrosive temperatures and vapours that complies with ArcelorMittal’s 4.01 standard and consists of a primer coat of Hempadur Fast Dry 17410, an intermediate layer of Hempadur Mastic 45880, and finishing with Hempathane Topcoat 55210.

As part of Hempel’s global coverage, our Spanish technicians travelled to China prior to the parts being shipped to Spain, and subsequently have provided on-site support up to final delivery and drawn up a maintenance plan for the paintwork going forward.

10 The fascinating story of FROSIO

The fascinating story of FROSIO

FROSIO started after the Norwegians discovered oil in the North Sea. The Norwegian government decided to exploit the oil reserves themselves, and began building the necessary infrastructure to find, drill for and extract oil from the ocean floor. But after just a couple of years, the oil rigs and other structures began to fall apart. They were supposed to last for 30 plus years, but were rusting and falling apart after 10 years. The reason? The protective coatings were not doing their job.

At first, the Norwegians looked at the coatings. But when they investigated, they found that the coatings were strong enough. They then realised that the problem was in the insufficient surface preparation and the selected application methods and they set about training their coating applicators. But while this improved coating performance to an extent, the Norwegian’s North Sea assets were still rusting too soon, because despite

thorough training, applicators were still making mistakes.

The answer to coating quality, the Norwegians realised, was well-trained coating inspectors. These are the people that assess the surface before painting, ensure atmospheric conditions are right, and check the application and the finished work for quality. It was only when the Norwegians began training coating inspectors that their North Sea assets were truly protected from the elements.

In 1986, the Norwegians established FROSIO (the name is an abbreviation of the Norwegian for The Norwegian Professional Council for Education and Certification of Inspectors for Surface Treatment). Today, FROSIO is the leading qualification for coating inspectors within the off shore, marine and industrial industries, recognized worldwide as a stamp of quality.

Hempel Academy: A leading provider of FROSIO certification training

Hempel Academy has offered FROSIO training to coating advisors both our own and our customers’ for the last 15 years. Today, these courses have a pass rate of 85%, the highest in the industry, which we are really proud of.

About FROSIO

FROSIO is a member organisation established in 1986 by the coatings industry to meet a growing demand of qualified and certified personnel on all levels within management, production and inspection of work within corrosion protection and surface treatment. In 2012, FROSIO established a similar system for training and certification of insulation inspectors.

Fast facts

Hempel was the first coatings manufacturer to offer FROSIO training to customers in 1992

• We have the best pass rate in the industry >85% (compared with the market rate of approx. 65%)

• Getting a FROSIO certification requires 80 hours of training , passing an 8-hour exam – plus a proven practical expertise in the field of protecting large constructions.

For many years now, FROSIO coating advisor certification has been recognized as a mark of quality in the coatings industry. The story of how it came about is both fascinating and educational, as Henning Olsen, Manager, Coating & Paint Technology team, Hempel Academy explains.

11Hempel’s Avantguard® technology protects Hellas Gold facilities

Hempel’s Avantguard® technology protects Hellas Gold facilities

Mining company Hellas Gold is building a new Process Plant, located in the Halkidiki Peninsula in Northern Greece. The facilities will be used to process all the gold-copper porphyry in the local area, the technical role of the plant being to improve the economic value of the ore by removing gangue minerals. The project owner is a mining company which operates, develops and explores the Aristotle Municipality, Halkidiki Prefecture, Central Macedonia and Greece. It was established in December 2003 and acquired the mining rights for

the Kassandra Mines in North-East Halkidiki in early 2004. Since February 2012 it has operated as a subsidiary of the Canadian company Eldorado Gold, a medium-sized gold mining company with assets in Turkey, China, Greece, Brazil and Romania.

Due to the highly technical nature of the work it will carry out, the Process Plant will contain a complex collection of electro-mechanical equipment such as grinding mills of different varieties, flotation tanks, ore beneficiation tanks,

pump boxes and storage tanks. These different components are being created by various subcontractors, including Hempel’s clients Emek SA, Lykomitros Steel SA and Viodomi SA. As well as the solid relationships we have developed in Greece, a key reason why the project subcontractors selected Hempel to coat the new structures is the need for superior anticorrosion protection in such a harsh environment where mining operations will take place. The solution was given by our Avantguard® series of paints with their activated zinc rich epoxies. Hempel specified Hempadur Avantguard® 550, a versatile primer for long-term protection of steel in severely corrosive environments, with superior anticorrosion properties than traditional zinc rich epoxies and the advantage of being simple to apply. Avantguard® technology uses all three anticorrosion methods in order to prevent corrosion, Barrier effect, Inhibitor effect and Galvanic effect while the self-healing properties enhance the anticorrosion properties of the system in case of mechanical damages. The paint system also includes Hempadur Mastic 4588W as an intermediate coat and Hempathane HS 55610 as the finish coat. The system complies with the requirements of ISO 12944-5 for C5-I corrosive environment and High Durability.
