In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?• Here is my ancillary task film poster (12a rating), along with other film posers have used and developed conventions of. This shows some similarities and differences.

• The similarities with these three film posters and conventions used are the fonts titles, and their positions. For example in American Pie’s film poster. The border surrounding the title makes it stand out and is the first thing I look at when viewing it. With my poster I tried to replicate and challenge this convention by using my own colour scheme adding a brown border with a slightly tilted white square to add the same effect and make it stand out and be unique and eye catching. The tilted square and text also links to the title of “Out of Control” symbolising how when something or someone is out of control they cannot control themselves or even stand up straight. From Dumb & Dumber I used the overlapping text technique in the title, to give it that effect of jumping out, by giving the word ‘Of’ its own border and embossing it. Also images used in Dumb & Dumber are comical which connote to the audience what genre it is, as does mine (funny facial expressions etc.)

• My media product challenges these forms and conventions, yet I made these conventions unique to my product and used tools on Photoshop such as the gradient tool to blend colours and add blended colours to fonts, even though this isn’t the gradient tools primary use. The splatter effects also help give an idea that this may be a messy film, a cringe comedy with embarrassing scenes•The differences in the usage of conventions.between my product and these real media products are colour schemes, with my grey background and the others are white, and also the credit font and their sizes and also the positional layout, which is more compressed on my poster as I wanted to leave more way for my images to stand out more.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products

For my second ancillary task (film review) I decided to take a different route and not challenge any conventions of other real media product film reviews. My reason for this was because I felt with this being the review there was no reason to include comedy conventions into it. I decided to develop my own conventions for example the layout including borders was all done instinctively using the gradient and rectangle tools on Photoshop CS3.

I also downloaded splatter brushes and implemented them into the review to give it a polished look. Of course I looked at some real media products and took some ideas but the main thing I did in the review was follow my instincts and use my own ideas to make my own unique product, which I failed to do in my actual film poster, which thrived on the success of those real media products I used and developed conventions from.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (The actual film) When first starting my media product (5 minute comedy film). My group and I looked at codes

and conventions of two films (Dumb and Dumber, American Pie 1998). Conventions such as the toilet scene, which is involved in both films. We decided to challenge these conventions by using our own ideas and unique sounds and effects, for example the view from the schools security camera, tracking Arran’s movements. We developed this convention used from the Dumb&Dumber lift scene with Lloyd and made it our own by adding a filter, and making the colour specific to our film.

The usage of laxatives in both Dumb & Dumber and our film, are quite different, we looked at this convention and thought we could develop it by integrating it within a school environment to make it as realistic as possible. We did this by having a different sort of laxative prop, instead of a liquidised form of laxatives used in Dumb & Dumber, we used a solid chocolate form and used it to imitate a dairy milk chocolate bar, eaten by main character Arran.
