How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Question 2

Page 2: Evalutation question 2

Our main task was to create a music video but we also had a task which was to create a full promotional package which included as full CD digipack (this consists off front and back covers and a inside booklet of the CD album) and also a advert that would be placed in a music magazine.

For me to start creating the promotional material I had to carry our research that would help me find out the forms and conventions of real media products. This did not only help me gain knowledge, but it also helped inspire me and provided a starting point, this also gave me a sense of direction for my own work. Once I identified the conventions I was able to adapt my own work to challenge them so it would appeal to my target market

For my ancillary text I had to make sure I kept the artist and the message he is trying to send through his lyrics in mind so that I could present this message through my work as well

My Media Products

Page 4: Evalutation question 2

I had to place in the warning sign for ‘parental advisory’ as my artist does tend to use explicit language in his lyrics, but this is conventional of the rap/hiphop genre

My artist himself is wearing the conventional clothing of a rap/hiphop artist which is a hoody also of a known designer brand. He is also wearing sunglasses which a lot of artists from my genre do wear themselves so that is another convention met.

The use of the background proved very effective as it shows a very eye catching landscape view of Central London where the sun is setting. As the songs within the album are about making it to mainstream music and making it to stardom and as the Central London is mainly known to be a wealthy area. Also in real media products within the rap/hiphop genre the artists usually poses in front of a background with large buildings or a city with bright lighting to render a sense of wealth to the audience

For the typography on the front cover I decided to link the album name “Point 5” with the background image, which is a horizon of Central London at sunset. As you can see the typography of the album name also has buildings imprinted into the bottom of the words. This challenged conventions of real media products as music artists often link the typography to the images on the front cover of there CD.

Front Cover

CD Booklet (Inside)Throughout the whole booklet and cover I kept a continues theme and colour scheme with the same background images being used and the same typography being used. I have continuously used these as I believe it contrast well and is very eye catching. In real media products artists have the same colour scheme and theme throughout the whole CD front and back cover and the digipack.

A common convention of real media products that I noticed is when an artist is posing for the pictures on the front and back cover of there music album they try and relate the pose to either the album name or there own name. I have challenged this convention my making my artist use his hands to symbolise his name as he is throwing up a WA which his hands.

Another convention that is commonly seen on CD booklets is brief information about the artist which I have also included the bottom of the page giving a short introduction of my artist.

CD Back CoverI placed in a track list which has the all the songs listed on it included within the album so the audience knows which song is which. Every single album has this in order to let the audience know the song name and if any other artist is featuring

I also included the artists name and the album name at the bottom of the page as this is also a convention on real music albums

I kept the colour scheme and theme flowing throughout the whole CD booklet and in both the front and back cover. This is a convention of a rap/hiphop media products as in real media products artists have the same colour scheme and theme throughout the whole CD front and back cover and the digipack

Magazine Advert

I had to create a conventional music magazine advert therefore I have to have my artist showing his actual face clearly in the images as he needs to be the main focal point as this will be the quickest way to gain recognition from the public.

I continued with the colour scheme for the typography only and changed the background to a very plain gradient as I need my artist and the typography to stand out and catch the readers attention.

I came to realise the music artists use very basic coloured backgrounds which large bold font with vibrant colours in order to catch the readers attention, this is why I decided to do this as I believed it would work well.

The combination of main product (music video) and my ancillary texts seem to work very well together as they have been followed by a theme which can be easily identified. They seem to follow the conventions of the rap/hiphop genre well enough for them to have an influence on the target audience and hopefully this will help the views of the music video to continue growing

I have taken into account everything that I discovered and analysed in my research and planning section to produce this therefore I hope the outcomes are clearly shown to be from the rap/hiphop genre which I believe they are. Using these conventions and developing them has helped the success of my complete media promotional package for my artist
