Kauri giants emerge from pastTwo fallen kauri trees, giants that rival Tane Mahuta in size, have been unearthed from aTangowahine farm after lying buried for a millennia.

Landowner Milan Radich estimates the larger of the two logs is around 13.5 metres long with a diameter of 3.5 metres.

“These are the biggest I have found out of several uncovered over the years.”

Tane Mahuta’s trunk height is 17.8 metres with a diameter of 4.9 metres, according to the New Zealand Tree Register.

“During the drought it was easier to tell where the logs were buried, a metre below the surface, as the grass was partially dead on top,” said Mr Radich.

He, along with Kaihu Kauri mill and gallery owner, Nelson Parker, and Brian Solly, from Wahui Quarries, extracted the logs using two diggers and a bulldozer.

Mr Parker says the logs will be processed at the Kaihu Kauri mill and put on display.

Associate Professor of the University of Waikato, Alan Hogg, and his team visited Milan’s farm to examine the logs for research on past climate changes.

Because kauri can live for around 2,000 years, they are unique in providing accurate evidence for past climates over long periods.

Prof. Hogg is currently focusing on the Younger Dryas period, 13,000 to 11,000 years ago, when parts of the northern hemisphere experienced a sudden drop in temperature.

“The samples indicate that the kauris died around 1,900 years ago and although not relevant to the current focus, are nevertheless useful

for compiling a timeline of changes in climate going back millennia,” he said, adding that he determines the amount of carbon 14 in the atmosphere over the tree’s lifespan.

“The levels in each tree ring vary because of two factors — output of the sun, and the levels of carbon in reservoirs such as oceans, soil and vegetation.”

The larger of the two trees dug up was rotten inside, making it difficult to determine the longevity of the kauri, but he estimates it was “at least 1,000 years old.”

It’s not the first time a huge log has been discovered in Tangowahine. In the late 1950s Leo Glamuzina and his team extracted a similar sized kauri on the farm previously owned by Don Millstead.

Milan remembers a television crew from America filming it when he was young — his first experience of television.

“I asked the crew what that big square box was and it was a camera.”

The experience heightened his interest in swamp kauri and he says there are plenty more around Kaipara waiting to be discovered. ■

New citizens welcomed

Really in the pink

Art at the tavern

The Kaipara District Council commissioners welcomed nine new citizens of New Zealand at the Dargaville Town Hall. The candidates were a mix of British, Irish, Australian and American, who now have all the privileges and responsibilities of being a New Zealand citizen in common.

Maungaturoto residents turned out in force to raise funds for cancer with a colourful Pink Ribbon breakfast at Sugarbelle’s cafe. Cafe owner, Marta Lawrence described the turnout as “amazing, and the local business community topped up the fund-raising coffers with a huge list of raffle prizes and donations.” On top of that, the ladies in pink went away very well fed. The international breakfast campaign began over 10 years ago as an initiative of the National Breast Cancer Foundation to raise funds for breast cancer research.

A birthday makeover by Paul Campbell

A 150th ‘birthday present’ from the New Zealand transport Agency has smoothed the way for Maungaturoto to celebrate its founding families.

Construction machinery and workmen from Downers have taken a break from a major $750,000 road-resurfacing project which has seen Hurndall Street through the central shopping area refurbished and revitalised.

“Three-quarters of the works have been completed,” said agency spokesman, Jacqui Horihoult.

“NZTA knew that the town was coming up for its 150th celebration and we wanted to make sure the town looked nice. We worked with the community to try and minimise disruption to businesses, and our feedback has been that this was achieved.

“We will be back to see the works finished off next year on the approach routes into town.”

Chair of the Maungaturoto 150th Committee, Albie Paton, said the new road was “an example of people working together, and it adds immeasurably to the overall facelift that’s been carried out by local businesses and residents. We are really pleased that NZTA brought into it.

“The town re-vamp has included major landscaping and shop front and home improvements, and of course a new wharf where the original settlers came ashore will be a focal point for the actual

Division on RMA reforms by Sheri O’Neill

Proposed changes to the Resource Management Act got the thumbs up at a packed Wellsford meeting attended by Rodney and Kaipara residents, despite predictions of detrimental outcomes for the Kaipara Harbour.

The meeting was addressed by the Minister for the Environment, Hon. Amy Adams, who outlined the proposed changes and timelines.

Describing RMA reform as vital for economic growth, Northland Member of Parliament, Mike Sabin, says he was heartened by the feedback from the audience, which he said was largely made up of people ‘frustrated’ by the current RMA model. “This is positive stuff and is about achieving balance, clarity and timeliness in consenting processes.”

The Resource Management Reform Bill 2012, currently before a select committee, is under attack by some for changes perceived as potentially undermining conservation values. Architect of the original RMA, former Prime Minister Sir Geoffrey Palmer, said last week the reforms would favour

by the Environment Court.“The court continually trashes the

principles of the RMA. The proposed reforms are designed to legitimise the illegalities that have occurred and will keep on occurring.”

He gives the example of the consents granted to place tidal turbines in the harbour mouth, and points to mounting pressure to mine iron sands along the west coast.

“The government is putting in place the infrastructure to exploit the environment without opposition.”

The draft bill is expected towards the end of the year. ■

development focused principles at the expense of environmental ones, and give government ministers excess power at local authority level. Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, Dr Jan Wright, has also expressed concern about possible erosion of environmental protection.

Kaipara Harbour Integrated Management Group spokesperson, Leane Makey, says any changes that undermined environmental principles would effect the health of the harbour. “We encourage Kaipara people to gauge the impact of the proposals at their local level.”

Mikaera Miru of Te Uri o Hau describes the RMA in its existing form as “a fantastic piece of legislation — if it was applied.” The problem in his view is its administration

Tangiteroria farmer, Richard Drake, was mustering sheep when he found the transmitter box from a weather balloon lying in the grass. “It had a reflector, which gave it away, with the remains of the burst balloon still attached.”

MetService network operation manager, Steven Knowles, says it’s not uncommon for people to find the fallen transmitters, but, reassuringly, he’s not aware of anyone ever actually being hit by one.

“Many would fall in the sea, and we can slow their ascent over mainland New Zealand by radar.”

Every day, MetService releases a total of eight high altitude hydrogen balloons from ground stations at Raoul Island, Whenuapai, Paraparaumu and Invercargill. Each balloon carries a radiosonde, a box of instrumentation that records and transmits pressure, temperature, humidity, and wind speed and direction data back to the ground station where it was released, providing a twice daily ‘vertical profile’ of the atmosphere which informs national and international weather forecasting.

A chance find provides an insight into a mix of old and new technologies used daily by MetService to monitor the weather.

Theatre exhibits past treasures by Rose Rees-Owen

The Dargaville Little Theatre celebrated their 50th jubilee over Queen’s Birthday weekend, coinciding with their exhibition opening at Dargaville Museum.

Chair of the jubilee subcommittee, Eryn Wilson-Collins, along with Margaret Tier and Pene McKenzie from the museum, have set up displays highlighting prominent shows and key moments from the 50 years of the theatre’s history.

Among the memories are floating the theatre down the Northern Wairoa River on 44 gallon drums in 1981 — from Mititai to where it now sits on Victoria Street.

Also on display is an original programme from the first show in 1963, Happiest Days of Your Life, signed by cast members who included Harold Sherson playing the role of Rupert Billings. Harold was present at the celebration, which included a show, a dinner and the exchange of many memories.

Costumes exhibited include the notorious cancan dresses popular in music halls — modified to allow men to fit them — and an original costume from the 1973 musical, Annie Get Your Gun, which the theatre will produce again later this year.

Eryn Wilson-Collins and Pene McKenzie with the cancan dresses

“We chose costumes for display that were handmade and special,” says Eryn.

The exhibition also displays present day activities and productions such as the theatre’s Glee Club, as well as acting, dancing and singing classes.

Dargaville Little Theatre Patron, Ann Hansen, cut the ribbon opening the exhibition.

It will run until September and Eryn encourages everyone to share in the theatre’s nostalgia and see it. ■

Once released, the balloons ascend through the troposphere — the atmospheric layer where our weather is active — and into the stratosphere, at their highest point nearly reaching the level of the ozone layer. As the atmospheric pressure decreases, the one metre diameter balloon swells to five times its size, and at around 90,000 feet — or 27 kilometres — it bursts, allowing its cargo to fall back to earth.

Metservice data confirmed that Richard’s balloon was released at Whenuapai and burst high above the Maungaturoto Railway Station an hour and a half later, taking around 45 minutes to descend and drift the 35 or so kilometres to Richard’s Tangiteroria paddock.

Dargaville Museum committee member, Colleen Urlich, thinks Harding Park is the perfect place to celebrate Matariki which brings in the Maori New Year.

Flying high for Matariki

“Up on the hill you have a vantage point and can see all around — a great place to see the stars and the first place in Dargaville to see the sunrise,” says Colleen.

The celebration marks the rise of the star constellation, Matariki, also known as Pleiades or the Seven Sisters. Traditionally it was a signal to prepare the ground for the coming year’s planting and to teach young people about the lore of the land.

Kites were flown as a symbol for connecting heaven and earth and Dargaville Museum wants to continue the tradition with a kite flying day and static kite exhibition. Six different age

groups, beginning at five years old right up to Adults, are encouraged to build a kite and enter it in either a flying competition or an exhibition.

“I have an image of Dads getting stuck in with their kids and building kites together,” says Colleen.

Entries have to be in by June 20 and a group of four independent judges will determine the best kites with prizes from local businesses.

Judging for the static kites takes place June 21 and the flying competition begins at 11.30am June 22.

Free entry to the museum, a quiz as well as raffles and refreshments for sale are also part of the celebrations. ■

Meetings address changes for Kaipara by Sheri O’Neill

by Rose Rees-Owen

The Northland Regional Council is holding a series of public meetings, informing Kaipara residents of pending and possible changes affecting the district, and prospective new councillors of the ins and outs of regional representation.

A recent review has changed the way Kaipara residents will be represented on the council after the local body elections on October 12.

Northlanders will vote for nine regional councillors (one more than currently elected) representing seven, smaller constituencies, with Kaipara voters falling into one of two:• Coastal South — between

Mangawhai and Kokopu, including Kaiwaka, Mangawhai Heads, Waipu and Ruakaka, or

• Kaipara — between the Kaipara Harbour and Maropiu, including Dargaville, Ruawai and Maungaturoto.NRC chief, Malcolm Nicolson,

says the meetings also cover possible Local Government reform for Northland.

“I’d like to encourage anyone who wants to know more about any of these issues — or who has any other questions they’d like to ask about the regional council and its work — to try to make the time to attend a meeting in your area.”

Last month’s meetings in Te Kopuru, Mangawhai and Kaiwaka are being followed on June 5 in the Maungaturoto Centennial Hall, June 10 at the Dargaville Town Hall, June 24 at the Ruawai-Tokatoka War Memorial Hall, and 25 June at the Paparoa Memorial Hall. All meetings are scheduled from 5.30–6.30pm.

Two information evenings for prospective regional councillors will also be held between 6-8pm in Dargaville on June 17 at the Masonic Lodge, and at the Mangawhai Club on July 1.

“Pre-registration is not required and any member of the public interested in attending is most welcome to do so on the night.”

Fire force strengthened by Sheri O’Neill

Tinopai Volunteer Rural Fire Force controller, Rob Kersey, says the unit is going from strength to strength, with a solid core of volunteers recently boosted to 18 by the addition of six new recruits.

Surrounded by plantation forest and kilometres off the beaten track, the Tinopai community relies on the efforts of local people for medical emergencies and fire protection first response.

“We’ve struggled in the past to maintain a force, but currently we’ve got enough people that we can turn out both a full medical and a fire team.”

He says many of the volunteers are weekenders, but they add valuable numbers at holiday time when visitors and summer weather can contribute to increased call-outs.

“We don’t turn anyone away if they meet the usual criteria and pass a police vet.” Eight out of ten callouts

attended are medical, and the crew are not only trained in CPR but also carry a defibrillator.

Rob counts the community lucky to have come through this year’s extreme fire conditions with no major incidents, especially as the forest is currently undergoing felling and there has been plenty of dry fuel around.

The force turned out recently for a full day of training in fire protection under the supervision and tuition of Northland deputy principal fire officer, Trevor Bullock, and Telford trainer, Greg Steele.

The training included unit standards for personal safety, pump operation and dry fire fighting techniques with hand tools.

The next workshop, June 12, will concentrate on cash flow addressing topics such as finding hidden cash and improving cash flow and Paul encourages more business owners to take advantage of this opportunity.

“If more people come then we will do a 15–20 minute recap of the first workshop, keeping it really simple, to build a base of knowledge.”

He says businesses can’t excel by only providing a good product or service anymore; they need to be financially savvy.

The final workshop, June 26, will focus on managing growth covering subjects such as forecasting cash flow, capital requirements and budget controls.

He says it’s not only for Westpac customers and is open to all small business owners with the aim of helping growth.

Workshops begin 5.30pm at the Lifestyler House, 107 River Road, and run for around one hour. ■

Sculptor takes flight

After studying sculpture at art school in the 1970s, Ginny says she thought she had left the medium behind. “Then a recurring image of a bird practically demanded to be reproduced.”

From that early work, crafted in clay dug from a cattle dam, Ginny has continued to explore a theme she describes as representing aspects of the spiritual journey, and is now producing a range of contemporary memorial sculptures for headstone outlets in Auckland and Whangarei.

“I’ve been delighted by the enthusiastic response,” she says. “It seems there’s currently a gap in the market.”

She describes her pieces as providing a unique, uplifting memorial that reflects death as a passage from this world to another, as described in sacred texts, indigenous traditions, and accounts of ‘near death’ experiences.

Working mainly in epoxy cement from her Paparoa studio, for some pieces Ginny uses a process that creates a popular and durable mother-of-shell effect, discovered accidentally after many years of experimentation. The range includes plaques which

Community service recognised by Rose Rees-Owen

President of the Dargaville Rotary Club, Bruce Crawford, presents James Foster with the Community Service Award

James Foster was ‘tickled pink’ to receive the Community Service Award from the Dargaville Rotary Club.

President, Bruce Crawford, presented James with a certificate at the Lighthouse Function Centre last Wednesday to mark James’ involvement w i th numerous organisations within Kaipara and beyond.

H i s c u r r e n t positions include being the amoner for the Pono Lodge and benevolence officer for the Freemasonry Northland District.

He is also secretary/treasurer for the North Kaipara Coast Guard as well the Otamatea Aero Club, and secretary for Save the Children Dargaville, and Probus.

Community service director, Brian Burnett, described James as humble.

“James will be known to most in this room, but in a strange way he is also anonymous. His humility is typical of the understated manner with which he goes about his business and the efficiency he brings to the job of welfare — taking care of others with a need — financially, physically and emotionally.”

“He has lived for 20 or so years in Dargaville with his wife, Fay, and has

taken it upon himself to be available for a multitude of fundraising tasks.”

James says it was a wonderful surprise to receive the award.

“I like to be part of the community and it fits into my lifestyle — I’ve got the time to do it.”

The retiree regards the committees and boards as his ‘hobby’ enjoying helping people in need. ■

can be attached to conventional headstones, and sculptures of varying sizes that can be placed to create a memorial space, indoors or out, with the stylised bird image a common theme.

“The bird depicts how I imagine the soul emerges from this world and aligns itself with the next.”

With plans afoot to supply outlets in Hamilton, Ginny says her dream of offering her work further afield from a solid local base has come closer to reality.

A High Energy Drench

ONLY AVAILABLEFROM YOUR VET

More reason than ever to use Starter “Plus”Dairy farmers in most areas of the country will be watching their cow’s health more closely this season thanks to the climatic challenge of a summer they would rather forget.

Many have experienced the late summer drought that severely affected pasture growth, and now coupled with low winter temperatures, grass growth may not be suf cient to get condition back onto those cows in time for spring calving.

This means that in many cases, cow condition will be lower than desirable and effective transitional management will be critical to prevent stressed cows falling off the metabolic cliff. This is where Starter “Plus” comes into its own.

The need for Starter “Plus” to help bridge the energy gap, and provide calcium and magnesium, will be greater than ever. Any method of preventing the nuisance of downer cows is hugely bene cial in reducing the time involved, cost of treatment, and loss of production and reproductive problems associated with downers.

It is important that all animals are treated with Starter “Plus” as soon as possible after calving. The bene ts include reduced metabolic problems, appetite stimulation, and a quicker

transition into full production. Starter “Plus” can also be used to supplement cows with reduced appetites because of illness.

The key to the success of Starter “Plus” is the type of ingredients providing the energy boost.• MPG (mono propylene glycol)

provides instant energy which is absorbed directly from the rumen.

• Molasses is then metabolised in the rumen to produce glucose which kicks in after the MPG.

• Oil and By-pass fats which pass through the rumen into the small intestine before being metabolised in the liver provide an energy kick 8–12 hours later.Starter “Plus” is the original, proven,

starter drench, with over 2 million doses sold since it was rst brought onto the market. With a high energy content that translates into a low cost per mega-joule of energy and trouble free ow characteristics, using Starter “Plus” gives peace of mind with a smoother transition into full production.

The Northland Rural Support Trust warns that the heavy rains are a two-edged sword and may have washed away any recent fertilisers.

“The financial impact is still there and it doesn’t just go away because it’s been raining,” said trust member, Julie Jonker.

“Many farmers are looking for grazing land to put their stock on while their own pastures recover. A lot of farmers are just getting stuck in and coping with it, but it’s a major event for the industry and a big impact on the region’s economy.”
